st oswald’s centre...
When Boroughmuir High School moved to their new home on the Union Canal, not only
did they leave their old building vacant, but also the school 'annexe' which sits on the
corner of Montpelier and Montpelier Park. St. Oswald's Hall was home to the drama
and music departments and for many former pupils they will remember it as the dreaded
exam hall.
Left empty and abandoned - white boards with lesson plans still visible - local residents
together with the Parent Council from Bruntsfield Primary School set about a plan to
acquire the building and create a community hub focused and to provide much needed
wrap-around childcare for local families.
At a Council meeting in August, the team -
now a company limited by guarantee and
known as Bruntsfield St. Oswald's - were
given the green light to proceed with the
acquisition under the Community Empowerment
Act. Local residents are now being
asked to get involved and become members
of Bruntsfield St. Oswald's to help
shape the plans for the building and its role
in the local community.

THE STYLE
EDIT...
As the dark nights fast approach
we are reaching for all things
cosy but at the same time feel
we’ve been deprived of all
things glamour this year. So
here’s our fashion edit mixing
the 2 together.

Picking a great print adds
interest to a winter wardrobe.
Layer up with faux

Inwear’s watercolour dress.
70’S COAT
Pick a fabulous coat this season to
lift your mood. Choose anything
but make sure it’s 70s inspired. We
love this statement faux fur from
French Connection.

Jamie Primrose
Contemporary Scottish Artist
Gorgeous local views by the
best-selling painter
‘‘Sparkling shadows on Coronation Walk”
50cm x 50cm, Oil on canvas
From Thursday 5th – Saturday 14th
November best-selling contemporary
Scottish artist Jamie Primrose presents his
latest gorgeous solo exhibition: ‘Ethereal
Silence’ at The Dundas Street Gallery in
The New Town.
Having achieved past sell-out solo shows of
his beautiful artworks and over 35 highly
successful new collections in Edinburgh and
London since 2003, the acclaimed painter’s
investment original paintings and exclusive
limited edition prints are continually in
demand by a discerning, loyal and
expanding clientele in the UK and abroad.
‘‘Ephemeral light”,
40cm x 40cm, Oil on linen
‘Ethereal Silence’ Exhibition
With no access to his Stockbridge artist’s
studio during lockdown in Spring 2020,
Primrose enjoyed long walks nearby his
Marchmont home. Thankfully, with such a
beautiful, deserted, sculptural landscape of
parklands, hills and streets on his doorstep,
he was inspired to create his wonderful
‘Ethereal Silence’ collection. This is a
gorgeous suite of over 50 one-off, original oil
paintings, celebrating the silent tranquillity
and splendour of Edinburgh. It highlights
the city’s unique light, stunning architecture
and seasonal changes from Jamie’s
favourite lockdown locations.
From new flourishes of soft pink Spring
cherry blossom, rich autumnal shades and
sparkling winter snow in The Meadows,
characterful Old Town streets at night and
iconic Princes Street Gardens by day, to
fiery city skies from Calton Hill and breathtaking
sights in and around Arthur’s Seat.

Malleny – your local broker
for all your Mortgage &
Protection Needs...
Firstly and most importantly, we hope that everyone and their family has stayed safe
and well throughout the current COVID pandemic.
Here at Malleny, whilst our Bruntsfield office has been closed due to COVID, we have
continued to work throughout lockdown assisting clients with their new purchases and
remortgages.
The housing market is going to be very different to how it was previously. No more open
viewings to start with. Many estate agents require you to have a Decision in Principle
before being accepted to do a viewing – we can help with this. These new measures are
not putting off prospective buyers – far from it! The market is currently very active. So if
you are thinking of buying or selling – don’t be put off by COVID.
Lenders are beginning to ease their mortgage lending constrictions due to COVID. Yes, it
is true that it is more challenging if you have a smaller deposit of 5%-10% - but, as Independent
Whole of Market brokers we are best placed to source the right deal for your
own personal situation. Lenders are asking more questions and requiring more supporting
evidence but we will guide you through this and make it as stress free as possible.
The pandemic has also made people think more about their finances and how they
would manage if they were unable to work due to sickness or if the main income earner
was to pass away. We have seen an increase in people wanting to protect their incomes
and their families. Call now to chat about your situation.
We will re-open our office shortly. In the meantime we are still here and working to
meet your mortgage & protection needs. Please contact us – see our contact details
on the main ad – to chat through your requirements.

Local People
This is the story from the new owners of Salt Café in Morningside, Liv and Steve Connolly-
Bastock... their journey through lockdown to the recent opening of their café…
Your lockdown story… Prior to lockdown I (Liv) was working as a freelance Events Director and
Steve (my husband) was working as a Chef De Partie at The Scran & Scallie in Stockbridge. Sadly,
within 24hrs of lockdown, I lost all my event contracts for 2020 (as many of these were overseas)
and shortly after, Steve lost his role due to the hospitality industry shutting down overnight. Never
ones to give up in the face of adversity, we brought forward our own ambitions to open an eatery
in Edinburgh and took control of our own destiny. We've worked tirelessly on our new venture
since April and we're delighted to have just completed our first week of trading, reaching fullcapacity
(32 covers) every single day!
Bit about yourselves… I have a background in events, having worked for some of the most prestigious
venues and agencies in the UK. It was in these roles that I honed the organisational, creative
and hospitality skills that I bring to the day-to-day running of Salt Café, always guaranteeing a personal
touch that makes each visit memorable. When not behind the till, I'm donning my apron and
whipping up one of my signature bakes in the kitchen.
Steve is an award-winning artisanal butcher and chef who began his culinary career in Manchester
before being head-hunted by Aiden Byrne to work at his new restaurant, 20 Stories, in Spinningfields.
Following on from his role as the restaurant’s in-house Meat Ambassador, he returned to his
homeland to work as a chef for Tom Kitchin at The Scran & Scallie here in Edinburgh. His work for
these Michelin-starred chefs nurtured his commitment to seasonal produce and sourcing top quality
local ingredients. It is this ethos he brings to his role as Head Chef here at Salt Café.
Bit about Salt Café … We viewed Salt Café a few weeks into lockdown after deciding to bite the
bullet and crack on with our own plans and instantly fell in love with the name, the premises and
its location in the picturesque suburb of Morningside.
We were encouraged by its established reputation for offering excellent brunch, but as foodies
who are passionate about seasonal produce and the provenance of ingredients, we wanted to
elevate this further with a brand new seasonal menu, which is freshly prepared in-house using only
the finest ingredients from exceptional local artisanal producers and suppliers.
Favourite Salt Café dish… Steve's favourite dish is our 'Butcher's Breakfast' as it showcases his
butchery skills and includes his delicious dry-cured bacon and handmade sausages as well as a
touch of luxury with locally foraged chanterelles. My favourite dish is our 'Pancake Stack' as they
are light, fluffy and indulgent with a drizzle of maple syrup, and they're made using buttermilk from
one of our favourite local suppliers 'The Edinburgh Butter Co.'.
