Sumner School celebrates cultural diversity 

The annual Christchurch Primary Schools Cultural Festival was held last week at Horncastle 

Arena, with at least 40 Christchurch primary and intermediate schools celebrating their cultural 

diversity with a spectacular smorgasboard of multi-cultural performances. Pupils from Sumner 

School and Diamond Harbour School Te Kura o Te Waipapa also took part in the experience.

YOUTHS PARTYING into 

the early hours of the morning, 

littering and even defecating 

near a car park in Moncks Bay 

is causing tension within the 

community. 

In a letter to the Linwood- 

Central-Heathcote Community 

Board, the Redcliffs Residents 

Association said it had received a 

number of complaints from residents 

living on Main Rd and Cliff 

St about some of the “antisocial 

behaviour” at the car park which 

sits next to the Christchurch 

Yacht Club. 

The association has said cases 

of loud music and noise keeping 

residents awake throughout the 

night has got noticeably worse 

over the past year. It has also received 

reports of part of the beach 

surrounding the car park being 

littered on and even used as a 

toilet. Youths have also been seen 

entering Cliff St to use the red 

zone for toileting purposes. 

The association wants the city 

council to consider installing a 

chain to prevent cars using the car 

park at night. 

It also wants a temporary 

Portaloo to be installed at the car

concluded its deliberations on 

four options for dealing with the 

wastewater.

Akaroa’s wastewater system is 

old and needs to be replaced. 

City council staff sought community 

feedback on four options 

for dealing with highly treated 

wastewater from a new plant 

already consented to be built on 

Old Coach Rd. 

Three of the options involved 

using highly treated wastewater 

to irrigate new areas of native 

trees and one to continue discharging 

it into Akaroa Harbour 

via a new outfall. 

The panel unanimously supported 

irrigating native trees 

and chose the Inner Bays option 

(Robinsons Bay, Takamātua and 

Hammond Point) over Goughs 

Bay or Pompeys Pillar. 

The panel members agreed the 

Inner Bays option as outlined in 

the consultation booklet needed 

additional recommendations. 

This is to enable smaller storage 

ponds and to future proof 

the system so that a purple pipe 

reuse system can be added in 

future, when regulations allow. 

Templeton said she agrees 

with submitters that a sustainable 

development approach is 

needed and wants the council to 

work towards this. 

“However, the current framework 

doesn’t support this, so we 

need to lobby central government 

with other agencies and 

Ngāi Tahu, to set standards for 

non-potable reuse of treated 

wastewater. 

“In the meantime, we need to 

act on the current situation and 

if standards are not set, the default 

position for council simply 

cannot be a harbour outfall.”

communities of Takamatua and 

Robinsons Bay is important and 

both city council and Akaroa 

residents need to play their part, 

she said. 

“We need to fix the pipes and 

work towards reuse and Akaroa 

residents need to treat the precious 

water supply as the taonga

lower the impact of their waste 

on their neighbours.” 

The panel has recommended 

that the city council actively 

works with regulators to make it 

possible for purple pipe systems 

to be introduced in New Zealand. 

“This has been an extremely 

difficult project and has involved 

a lot of hard work by many 

people over many years, and I 

thank everyone for their efforts,’’ 

Templeton said. 

“I know the community will 

want to stay involved in this project 

and we have recommended 

a community reference group be 

established.’’

resolve some of the concerns of

“This is an issue that has been 

going on for a while. We already 

have got security guards going 

down the road and locking up 

different areas of concern,” she 

said. 

Davids also said the city 

council was planning to install 

a barrier which would prevent 

vehicle entry into the car park at 

night. 

However, Davids did not think 

temporary toilets would be a 

good idea for the area. 

“We know there is an 

issue there but we would not 

support putting in Portaloos 

because you get high winds in 

the area and you also get silly 

people that want to push them 

over which is not conducive to 

anything. 

“There are already toilets in 

the area at Barnett Park. We will 

make sure once the barrier is 

put in we will get some signage 

installed on it.”

IN NOVEMBER, the Redcliffs-Te 

Rae Kura Eco Village Group initiative 

is focussing on Resilience. 

The term “resilience” refers to 

the ability to survive and adapt to 

changes in society or the environment. 

Being prepared for emergencies 

helps us recover quicker when 

disasters strike. 

There are many risks to be aware 

of including: heavy rain, hail, 

snow, flooding and landslides; sea 

inundation from tsunami and sea 

level rise; strong winds, falling 

trees and wildfires; earthquakes, 

liquefaction and rockfall; droughts; 

extreme heat and cold, and job 

loss. 

Our basic needs are water, food, 

shelter, power, skills and money. 

Water is essential, you can 

survive for weeks without food, 

but only days without water. Emergency 

tap water storage is essential 

and roof water storage can provide 

a back-up. 

Food in the form of fresh vegetables 

and fruit may be available if 

you have a garden, but you should 

also have emergency supplies of 

canned and dry foods. 

Our primary shelter is our home. 

Make it safe from risks or have 

another place to retreat to like a 

campervan or a friend’s home. 

Power is essential for cooking, 

communications and light. Have 

a back-up alternative if electricity 

should fail, like gas or wood burner 

for cooking and heating, solar 

panel or generator or batteries for 

radios, phones, fridges, lights and 

battery charging, and candles and 

matches for light. Basic skills like 

first aid, gardening, cooking, sewing 

and building, often come in 

handy in emergencies. 

Always have some savings “for 

the rainy day”, and note that cash 

can be used without electricity!

Smiths City moving with the times

SMITHS CITY has officially 

settled into a new home after 

more than 100 years serving 

Cantabrians from its former 

central city location. 

The iconic furniture and appliance 

retailer opened its new 

flagship store in The Colombo, 

Sydenham, last week, a site 

previously occupied by Spotlight 

until last year. 

It also rebranded with a new 

logo to reflect the beginning of a 

new era. 

Chief executive Tony Allison 

was excited with the launch and 

said the relocation to Sydenham 

was for a more “local approach,” 

and to be in the heart of a community, 

rather than the central 

business district. 

Decisions behind the move 

were a combination of the store’s 

ownership change earlier this 

year and the expiry of their former 

Colombo St store’s lease in 

the coming months. 

It was now owned by Colin 

Neal, of Polar Capital. 

“It’s a great opportunity. We’ve 

been in big cities, but we moved 

to feel more local and to get 

amongst the suburb which is 

more like us going forward,” said 

Allison. 

“The retail experience has 

also been lifted. The look, the

textures, the colours – everything’s 

a lot more vibrant now, I 

believe.” 

Shoppers can expect a modern 

and inviting atmosphere, new 

fixtures, an updated product

The new premises is nearly 

half the size of the former site, 

downsizing from 6600 sq m to 

3233 sq m. 

A “smile” was embedded in its 

new logo to celebrate what it is 

to be Kiwi – “warm, straight up, 

and honest,” – while delivering 

its services with a “cheeky” grin. 

New beginnings meant new 

approaches to how services were 

delivered. 

“In retail, everyone looks 

over their shoulder to see what 

everyone else is doing, they go – 

how do we outcompete them?” 

he said. 

“We want to do the opposite, 

when everyone else is zigging, 

we want to zag. We want to be 

honest, Kiwi retailers, with good 

service, that know our products 

and tell you honestly what the 

[product] is going to do. 

“We don’t want to bamboozle 

customers with buzzwords and 

specs to try and get the sale, we 

want to do the right thing by the 

customer.” 

Allison was concerned about 

the future in spite of the new 

store. 

“If you don’t have concerns at 

this time with what’s going on, 

you’re probably not thinking 

hard enough,” he said. 

“We’ve got to be mindful 

of what’s happening with the 

economy and be prepared.”

LITTLE BLUE penguins 

are native to New Zealand 

and are the smallest of all 

world’s penguin species, 

and without a doubt, the 

cutest of all. 

Not that you are likely 

to spot them easily as they 

only come on shore after 

dark and leave again before 

daylight. They will spend 

the day fishing and have 

been spotted as far as 

20km offshore to do so. 

At the end of the day, 

they gather in groups (or 

rafts) waiting for darkness 

before quickly making 

their way to their nests. 

These can be in burrows, 

under dense vegetation or 

between rocks but some 

of you living near the 

shoreline may have been 

lucky enough to spot a nest 

underneath your house, 

garage or even in your 

woodpile. 

Nesting begins in July 

and one to two eggs are 

tended to by both parents 

who will turns-about keep 

eggs and chicks safe and 

warm for a day while the 

other will go out fishing. 

Eggs are laid between 

July and mid-November 

and occasionally a pair will 

produce a second clutch 

in one season. Would it 

not be a shame if we lose 

our last few remaining 

breeding pairs around the 

estuary? 

Not that long ago they 

were commonly found 

but increased housing 

and roading development 

have resulted in the loss 

of habitat for the little 

blues. With increased

Wine 

Port is complex on the palate

PORT IS a fortified wine from 

the Douro Valley in northern 

Portugal. 

Its history dates back more than 

300 years to the wars between the 

English and the French, which 

curtailed the supply of wine from 

France. 

Enterprising English merchants 

began looking further afield and 

began shipping the dark and powerful 

wines from Portugal. 

To maintain the wine’s freshness 

and stability on the journey 

to England, brandy spirit was 

added to the barrels of wine - its 

higher alcohol affording greater 

protection against spoilage. 

At some point, brandy spirit 

was added to the still fermenting 

wine, and port was born. 

The grape must (the mix of 

grape juice and grape skin) is run 

into fermentation vessels, with 

fermentation allowed to proceed 

for barely a couple of days. 

The addition of neutral spirit 

then kills the yeast, arresting fermentation 

and thus retaining the 

natural grape sugars in the wine, 

while also extracting colour and 

flavour from the skins. 

In the final wine, spirit makes 

up roughly 20 per cent of the volume, 

leading to an alcohol level 

ranging from 18-20 per cent. 

Tawny ports take their name 

from the colour of the wine, 

resulting from ageing and controlled 

oxidation of the wine. 

Unlike the boldly fruit-driven 

Ruby, LBV and Vintage styles, 

Tawny styles offer mellow, nutty, 

“rancio” characters, classically 

paired with nuts and blue cheese, 

or contemplatively sipped by 

themselves.

Caramel/butterscotch, raisins, 

spices/clove, walnut with a 

sherry-like hint. 

This offers a sweet golden 

syrup-like character with toffee

The overt sweetness pares back 

with aeration, while crispness 

grows, bringing this into a nice 

place.

Bonfire smoke, charry notes,

plums, berryfruit and sultanas, 

flowing to a smoke and walnut 

accented close. 

I may be curmudgeonly on my 

rating, but I find the burnt/charry 

elements dominating.

Subtle yet attractively expressed 

nose with toffee, walnuts, 

spices and fruit cake, a little wood 

smoke with time. Sweetness

the palate adding nuts, spices and 

dried fruits. 

There’s excellent complexity 

here with time adding a rancio 

nuance. Nicely balanced, rich, 

mouthfilling and full of appeal.

Tasty Bites 

Stuffed spuds make a tasty change 

THE POTATO really is a 

versatile vegetable. It can be 

mashed, chipped, scalloped, and 

boiled, or more, and it makes an 

excellent shell in which to bake 

a tasty filling to create stuffed 

spuddies. 

You can pre-cook the potatoes 

in the oven; they will take an 

hour or so depending on the size. 

Be sure to prick them with a fork 

or the tip of a knife first as they 

can — and do on occasion — 

explode and make an awful mess. 

If you want to speed it up a 

bit, place the well scrubbed and 

pricked potatoes in the microwave 

until they start to feel soft. 

Four fist-sized potatoes will take 

at least 10min. 

Then just pop them in a preheated 

oven for 10min or so to 

crisp up the skin. It is also wise to 

scoop out the flesh while they are 

still warm. 

Each of the following recipes 

will fill four fist-sized potatoes. 

Ham, Cheese and Corn- 

Filled Potatoes 

Ingredients 

4 potatoes, cooked 

½ onion 

25g butter 

200g of canned creamed corn 

½ cup frozen peas 

2 big tablespoons sour cream 

80g tasty cheese plus extra to 

grate over the top 

100g diced ham 

Directions 

Melt the butter in a frying pan 

and add the finely diced onion. 

Cook until soft. 

Slice a side off the cooked 

potato and scoop the middle into 

a large mixing bowl, being careful 

not to break the skin. Cut the 

potato flesh roughly with a knife 

so that it is in smallish chunks. 

Thaw the peas in the microwave 

and add to the potato filling 

along with the cooked onion, 

creamed corn, sour cream, grated 

cheese and ham. Mix thoroughly 

but gently so that you don’t mash 

it all up. Season well with salt and 

pepper. 

Pile the filling ingredients back 

into the waiting skins. You will 

have loads of filling so pile it high 

and then top with a little extra 

grated cheese. 

Place in a 200 deg C oven for 

15min to warm through. 

Cheese and Onion Souffle 

Potatoes 

Adding beaten egg whites to 

the filling makes for a lighter 

filling. Be sure to eat them immediately 

upon removing from the 

oven. 

Ingredients 

4 potatoes, cooked 

50g butter 

1 large onion 

3 tblsps cream or milk 

50g parmesan cheese plus extra 

to sprinkle on top 

2 eggs 

salt and pepper 

a small handful of finely 

chopped parsley 

Directions 

Cut the onion into a fairly 

small dice and place in a pot 

with the butter. Let them cook 

together gently until the onion is 

really soft but not coloured. This 

will take 10-15min. 

Cut the top off the potatoes 

and scoop the middles into a 

large bowl. Mash with a fork 

until smooth and add the cooked 

onion, cream or milk, grated parmesan, 

chopped parsley. Season 

generously with salt and pepper. 

Mix well. 

Separate the eggs and mix the 

yolks into the potato mixture. 

Whisk the whites to firm peaks 

and fold into the potato using a 

metal spoon. 

Spoon the filling back into the 

skins and top with the extra parmesan 

cheese. Bake at 200 deg C 

for 20min. 

Kumara with Bacon and 

Orange Filling 

Ingredients 

4 large kumara 

100g bacon 

1 orange 

2 tblsp cràeme fraiche 

salt and pepper 

grated cheese to sprinkle on 

top 

Directions 

Scrub the kumara and bake 

until soft. As with the potatoes 

you can speed this up by placing 

them in the microwave to give 

them a head start. 

When they are cool enough to 

handle, slice of a side and scoop 

the middle into a mixing bowl. 

Chop roughly. Fry the slices of 

bacon until they are crispy and 

chop finely. 

Finely grate the orange rind 

and squeeze the juice out of half 

of it. Add to the chopped kumara 

along with the bacon, sour cream 

and some salt and pepper. 

Mix together and pile into the 

skins. Top with the grated cheese 

and warm through for about 

15min in an oven that has been 

preheated to 180 deg C.

economic development activity 

aimed at growing and sustaining

BMW M235i – it’s all in the name 

THE LENGTHY name lends 

itself to all manner of vehicle 

types. 

The car I’m referring to is 

BMW’s M235i xDrive Gran 

Coupe, also described by BMW 

as a fastback sedan. 

That’s quite a mixture, so I’ll refer 

to it simply as the M235i, and 

in reality it does cover all those 

bases, its compact four-door 

sedan concept does have coupetype 

styling. 

What’s more, because it carries 

an M badge it is a performance 

car which squarely sits in the 

sport sedan category, and you’d 

expect nothing less from BMW, 

the M235i is a car which tugs 

at the senses, oozing style with 

its low, sleek shape, and it has 

performance to envy through a 

225kW engine. 

The M235i’s design is curvy yet 

aggressive, it has a shape which 

lures comment and desire, yet it 

also has practicality which doesn’t 

always present itself with coupe 

designs. The latter is particularly 

noteworthy, there is easy entry 

and egress up front, the doors 

aren’t overly wide so they aren’t a 

nuisance in close confines, while 

there’s also the benefit of reasonable 

leg room for those who are 

confined to the rear seats. Also, it

must be said that the boot space 

is cavernous, it runs deep to the 

rear seats and is easy to load. 

At the other end sits a heavily 

boosted turbocharged fourcylinder 

engine. Herein, lies a 

bit of a surprise, in contrast to 

BMW’s decades of longitudinal 

engineering preference, it sits 

transversely in the engine bay. 

Drive is effectively channelled 

through to the front-wheels, until 

xDrive automatically engages 

drive rearwards when slipping up 

front is detected. 

Not only is the engine powerful 

up the top end, there is also a 

hefty 450Nm of torque to experience, 

the combination results in a 

solid punch when the accelerator 

is given some weight, there is 

an exhaust bark and throb that 

sounds delightful, especially in 

sport mode where the decibels 

are increased markedly. 

The M235i is fast for a 2-litre 

car. It will scorch to 100km/h 

from a standstill in 4.8sec, and 

will lunge through an 80km/h to 

120km/h overtaking manoeuvre 

in 4sec thanks to a strong turbo 

surge and high mid-range torque 

output. 

The gearbox is a traditional 

eight-speed automatic and it can 

be manipulated through steering

wheel-mounted paddle shifters. 

Between the engine and transmission 

the M235i stands out for 

solid performance through the 

rev band and, of course, there’s 

always a gear on hand, there’s 

never a feeling that the transmission 

is not in a suitable ratio. That 

is the benefit eight-speeders offer, 

the gaps between ratios are close 

allowing the engine to work in its 

optimum range. 

Of course, the M235i doesn’t 

need to be driven aggressively, but 

when it is it feels strong, akin to 

the performance aspect of BMW. 

However, at city speeds it is docile 

and feeds power gently so that 

stop-start traffic is relaxing.

It is also relatively fuel efficient 

given there is a lot of excitement 

under the bonnet. According to 

BMW the M235i can achieve a 

combined cycle rating of 7.6-litres 

per 100km. My time with the test 

car resulted in a 9.4l/100km average 

which wasn’t that far distant, 

along with a 5.2l/100km highway 

cruise figure with the engine 

turning over very relaxed at just 

1750rpm at 100km/h. 

Even though the M235i is effectively 

front-wheel-drive it has 

natural handling along with steering 

that is weighted perfectly to 

pick up the feel of what the tyres 

are doing in relation to the road 

surface. Every nuance is delivered 

back to the driver so that he or 

she understands the handling 

characteristics and how the car is 

behaving. 

BMW is strong on safety, the 

electronic devices which control 

traction are there so that the entire 

car stays stable under power. 

However, the chassis is so advanced 

that the car doesn’t rely on 

the safety devices, it can be driven 

hard yet grip is rarely challenged. 

The low profile Bridgestone 

Potenza tyres (235/35 x 19in) 

have a solid tenure with the road 

and, what’s more, they are quiet 

and have a remarkable amount of 

absorption through the narrow 

sidewalls so that ride comfort isn’t 

overly compromised. 

The spring and damper rates 

within the fully independent 

front-strut/rear multiple link 

set-up default to a comfort setting 

but are adjustable to the driver’s 

command through a series on 

in-cabin push-buttons. 

The M235i is a true driver’s car 

and rewards with its lithe and 

nimble nature and don’t forget it 

has the glitz to go with the glamour, 

it has all the major specification 

ingredients in the first 

instance, along with an extensive 

option list. 

At $91,400 it does carry a 

premium price, but what that 

doesn’t take into account is that 

along with its title it is more than 

one car, every drive is a rewarding 

experience, and no matter 

whether you drive it soft or hard, 

it always feels so good to be in.
