The Nasty Wacker
isn’t a new concept. It was
created by Dr. Moorehead of Paducah, Kentucky back in
the 1970’s to entice largemouth bass during spawning
periods. The doctor, a notable heart surgeon, was an
ardent bass man. One of his hobbies was to build a
respectable tackle company. The products he created
became tools for just about every bass man south of
the Mason Dixon Line.
The Nasty, his main lure, when flipped into early
season bass beds enticed bass like no other product
used for such a purpose. In 1978, due to family pressure,
Dr. Moorehead decided to sell his budding enterprise.
Dan Gapen, Sr., the president of The Gapen
Company bought it and all the rights to the Paducah Tackle Company
inventory, machinery, trademarks and patents. Up until 2011 none of the doctor’s
creations had been utilized by the Gapen Company. Dan had purchased the company
for its modern plastic extrusion machinery.
During the fall of 2010, on a trip to Lake Fork in Texas, some of the Nasty jigs
were spied by a guide, Tim Walker, and inquired as to their use. Dan explained their
use and his guide introduced them to the bass men of Lake Fork and once again Dr.
Moorehead’s creation was reborn.
WORKING SPRING BEDS
As the drawing above shows, bass beds are generally hard to get at. Often surrounded
with weed growth, timber and stumps, ordinary bass lures are a failure
when an attempt to work the structure is made.
However, the Nasty, now the Nasty Wacker, is ideal for such use. Due to its
multi-leg design it becomes nearly weedless in such cover, is ugly and threatening
