THE QuESTION IS:

DO FISH SMELL FOOD?

Yes - some more than others. In the cases of bottom feeders,

such as catfish, there are three ways they can smell food: whiskers, lateral lines and nostrils. In

the case of bass, walleye, perch, whitebass and the trout species, a similar three smelling

devices can be used. However, in each of these species these senses work in lessening or

greater degrees.

ANOTHER QuESTION:

WHAT SMELL WORKS BETTER THAN OTHERS?

This question has always confused me. I’m a great believer in using natural bait, such as

minnows and crawlers to enhance the smell of artificial lures such as a jig. There are other

anglers who believe they can do the same by spraying a man-made solution and have equally

as good a result. My experience has not been such.

However, there is a liquid scenting device which is a natural fish attractor - that is

ANISE OIL!!! My Grandfather, Jesse Gapen, a gifted fly fisherman, used anise on his

flies beginning in 1916. He purchased the anise oil in small bottles from the local Rexall

Drug Store in Monroe, Wisconsin. Though Grandad was a purist when it came to fly

fishing it wasn’t beyond him not to use this added attractant. Today, anise oil remains

the key attractant in 90% of the fish attractors which are sprayed on.

Gapen’s soft jigs are manufactured with the anise as part of the soft plastic

extrusion process.
