Here’s a fly that looks like, acts like and even feels like a crawfish.
If the angler were to rub it with a piece of nightcrawler it would
even smell like a crawfish. Deadly on smallmouth bass, this fly is
equally deadly on brook trout in the far north and any of the saltwater
species which crawl the shallow flats of your favorite Caribbean island or Florida’s
east and west coast. Though the crawdaddy fly looks to be frail in structure, this is not
so. It’s tied of durable material and lasts surprisingly well under the hard strikes of
species such as smallies, walleye, redfish or permit.

This is a fly capable of working saltwater eelgrass flats for bonefish, or rocky
river bottom for smallmouth bass. Leaded eyes gives Mr. Crab the action of a jig
while its deerhair body allows the angler to work it with a fly rod. It’s armed with a
brook trout, redfish and walleye on an equal basis.

The laker/striper fly was created in 1995 to entice lake trout
in the far north. It has since proved itself on inland strippers in
reservoirs such as Norfork, Beaver, Cumberland and Texoma. Its
original intent was to imitate the cisco minnow in northern
waters. But once the fly was used in the US waters, it was found to
imitate the shad, alewife and large shiner minnow as well. The
laker/striper fly is now being used on most predator game fish
which include walleye, bass, northern pike, muskie, salmon and
lake trout.
