STUDENT ENGAGEMENT PROGRAMS AT HCC INCREASE SUCCESS A variety of activities continue to take place outside the classroom at Heartland Community College. The 2009- 10 academic year saw an increased number of students engage in co-curricular programs. Between the Student Government Association, the Heartland Activities Committee, Leadership Development activities and a variety of student clubs, the College offered numerous opportunities to get involved. Student Government Association The Student Government Association continues to provide representation for the interests, needs, goals and expectations of the student body to College administrators and the Board of Trustees. During the 2009-10 academic year, Heartland’s Student Government Association helped coordinate recycling initiatives across campus, petitioned for MAP grant funding in the State Capitol, and coordinated fundraisers for the Haiti disaster and other important causes at Heartland and beyond. Heartland Activities Committee The Heartland Activities Committee planned and presented 35 different activities during the 2009-10 academic year, including eight family movies, 11 lunch time musical concerts, seven lunch time bingo games and nine additional special events. Leadership Development Heartland’s Office of Student Engagement supports the Illinois Community College Board’s (ICCB) pledge to support student leadership development. Heartland students embraced the opportunity to foster their leadership skills at the ICCB Student Leadership Institute, the ICCB Student Advisory Committee Lobby Day and the Illinois Community College Student Activities Association Fall Student Leadership Conference. Clubs and Organizations There were 31 active student clubs at Heartland during the 2009-10 academic year. The majority of these clubs are truly student-centered, complete with student leaders who steer the groups’ planning, activities and organization. In fact, Heartland students also are responsible for determining which clubs are formed. This year alone, student interest led to the formation of eight new clubs and organizations.
