Hygge is a defining feature and an integral
part of the Scandinavian culture. Hygge
– pronounced Hoo-gah, can be used
as a noun, adjective or verb. It has no
specific one-word meaning but instead
encompasses a feeling of cosiness,
contentedness and wellbeing. It’s comfort
and pleasure combined, its about being in
the moment and enjoying the simple things
that bring you pleasure. Our homes can
reflect the Hygge lifestyle in the simplest
ways, chances are you are embracing it
already.
De-clutter
The main idea of hygge decor is to create a
peaceful, serene space that is free of clutter.
Mess can cause stress, which is the opposite
of the calming and happy way of the Danish
lifestyle. Remove things that do not work,
hold no function or bring no joy. Focus on
function, purpose and items that add warmth,
engagement and joy.
Light a candle
The soft yellow flicker of candlelight produces
a lovely ambiance that simply cannot be
replicated by artificial light. Lighting a few
well-placed candles in your home can really
add effect and create a cozy and intimate
atmosphere. Adding a candle here-and-there
will create softness in your room and instantly
make it feel warm and welcoming. You can
upgrade your hygge experience by choosing
candles with scents that make you feel more

Create a spa style sanctuary
Nothing beats a long hot soak in the bath
so make it count and be indulgent. Your
bathroom should be a place you go to for
rest and rejuvenation. To create a bathroom
that is pleasant and peaceful, make sure you
have lots of hidden storage space to avoid
any unwanted clutter. For extra enjoyment,
invest in luxury bath oil, candles and fluffy bath
robes for a design that is laid-back and serene
making your experience as relaxing as possible.
Upgrade your bedding
Invest in good quality bedding to ensure a
great night’s sleep. Egyptian cotton is widely
considered to be the best, not only in how it
feels but also durability compared to other
cottons. For a truly luxurious and opulent feel
buy the highest thread count you can afford,
typically the higher the thread count, the softer
and smoother the feel. Layer on warmth and
comfort with tactile throws and cushions
which are both decorative and functional.
Lighting
Lighting is so important for creating ambience,
going into a room with one bright ceiling light
can kill the atmosphere. Create different levels
of lighting from wall lights that are dimmable,
to table lamps, a floor lamp next to a chair
creates a reading corner.
Create a snug
Every home should have a little cosy nook
to retreat to. Add cushions and soft throws
making it somewhere to sit and relax with your
feet up and a good book.
