prepare proposals, <strong>and</strong> providing guidance in managing grant<br />

funds <strong>and</strong> complying with grantor requirements. For 2009, GMO submitted<br />

21 research proposals <strong>and</strong> community grants <strong>for</strong> a total of<br />

$21,824,943. Out of that: $ 8,185,365 was awarded in community grants,<br />

MEDICAL INNOVATION & TRANSFORMATION INSTITUTE (MITI):<br />

���� �������� ��� �������� �������� ����������� �� ��������������� �����������<br />

since its establishment in 2007, has been to acquire or invent best practices<br />

in health care <strong>for</strong> the <strong>Inova</strong> process of continuous improvement. Led<br />

by Dr. Terry Sharrer, Executive Director, MITI was involved in three major<br />

projects in 2009: collaborating with the newly founded Ignite Institute<br />

<strong>for</strong> Individualized <strong>Health</strong>;; exploring research, education, <strong>and</strong> business<br />

opportunities with Soochow University in Suzhou, China, <strong>and</strong> initiating a<br />

broader telemedicine program.<br />

�������������� �� ������ ����� ����������� ����������������� ����������� ���<br />

pursue several interests common to the <strong>Inova</strong> <strong>Health</strong> <strong>System</strong> <strong>and</strong> the<br />

three affiliated hospitals of Soochow University in Suzhou, about sixty<br />

miles north of Shanghai. An <strong>Inova</strong> group visited there in July, <strong>and</strong> the<br />

first of two groups coming from China arrived in Falls Church in early December.<br />

A larger delegation will follow in March 2010. At present, both<br />
