PSYCHIATRIC RESEARCH<br />

The Department of Psychiatry has a long<br />

tradition of research that focuses on the<br />

interface between psychiatry <strong>and</strong> medical<br />

illnesses. Methods include quantitative as<br />

sessment of various patient populations<br />

with specific attention to the personality<br />

characteristics common in patients who<br />

utilize somatic complaints as a proxy <strong>for</strong><br />

psychosocial problems,a process termed<br />

somatization. The personality variable<br />

that captures the essence of this<br />

Both Drs Wise <strong>and</strong> Crone have contributed articles on the organization<br />

<strong>and</strong> education of psychiatric fellows in Psychosomatic Medicine. Reviewing<br />

research in the field of consultation psychiatry is also an ongoing endeavor.<br />

Dr. Wise is the editor of Advances in Psychosomatic Medicine.<br />

Both he <strong>and</strong> Dr. Crone are members of editorial boards of a variety of<br />

peer reviewed journals.<br />

An additional area of research is the role of psychological factors in organ<br />

transplantation. Dr. Crone has edited a Psychiatric Clinics of North<br />

America. Her papers appear both in psychiatric journals <strong>and</strong> journals related<br />

to medical <strong>and</strong> surgical services.<br />

A final area of research pertains to drug therapy <strong>for</strong> depression <strong>and</strong> anxiety.<br />

Dr. Wise has contributed several peer reviewed papers in this field.<br />

Both Drs. Wise <strong>and</strong> Crone have presented their work at National Meetings<br />

such as the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine <strong>and</strong> the Annual meeting<br />

of the American Psychiatric Association<br />
