Community Focus
Community Center Director Michael
Pollack, the center will not be having its
traditional activities, but will offer some
holiday cheer.
“We will be having Santa’s mailbox and
the letters to the Santa program we have
previously had,” Pollack said. “Kids can put
letters in the mailbox to Santa and they
will receive a letter back.”
Pollack said the letters should be in an
envelop with the child’s full name, complete
address, and postage. The mailbox
will be set up in the community center
parking lot, located at 5955 West Broad St.
The center also will be offering phone
calls with Santa. For $2 children can
receive a call from Santa on Tuesday or
Thursday evening through Dec. 22. Santa
also will occasionally do calls on Saturday.
When registering, parents should include
one or two gift ideas so Santa can personalize
the call. Calls will last approximately
five minutes and Santa will not guarantee
gifts for kids but instead tell the children
what he heard they wanted.
“We also are looking at having a holiday
themed inflatable outside that people can
take a photo with,” Pollack said.
Prairie Township to offer phone calls from Santa
Columbus Metropolitan Library (CML)
is bringing together a variety of agencies
during a free virtual event to connect central
Ohioans with the help they need.
The Virtual Social Services Fair event
will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Dec.
8. It is free and open to anyone in need.
Participants will be able to engage with
professionals in a one-stop virtual location
to find help on a variety of pressing issues,
including food access, legal aid, rent stabilization
funds, childcare, job help and
more.
scrimmaging at practice or gym
class. The photo was shared by Dorothy
Pemberton (West class of 1955). Her
late husband, Warren Pemberton,
played for the Cowboys basketball team
that finished 12-7 in the 1954-55 season.
The team was coached by Fred
Heischman, the longest-serving West
basketball coach. Pictured are Warren
These events aim to fill the void the
township will have this holiday season
with the cancellation of the annual breakfast
with Santa event, as well as the holiday
tree lighting.
In other township news, Pollack gave an
update on activity at the community center
as it opens more facilities.
“It has been a slow process. As people
become more comfortable, they are slowly
coming back,” he said. “The reopening of
the pool and allowing younger children in
the childcare room has helped.”
The center has been offering fitness
classes, pickleball and other activities that
can safely be done while distancing.
Pollack said that while the registration
for swim classes has not been what it normally
is, they are excited about the enthusiasm
of reopening the pool. He also said if
restrictions tighten up again, they would
not close the pool. They may not allow people
in depending on the restrictions, but
they will not drain it.
