Quick thinking over fire
earns Maddy recognition
• By Matt Slaughter
MADDY Flattery-Donohoe’s
actions potentially saved her
neighbours from a house fire in
October.
Last week, emergency service
staff visited the 10-year-old
Ngutuawa School [formerly
Bamford School] pupil from
Aranui in front of the whole
school to praise her efforts, which
helped the family of
four and their dog get out
unharmed.
Maddy woke to the smell
of smoke at about 1am on October
16. She saw her neighbours’ deck
was on fire and woke up her mum
Kim Arnold to tell her.
Maddy and Kim went next
door and alerted the family, who
got out of the house without
injury.
The fire service was called and
Kim was able to bring the fire
under control with a garden hose
before they arrived.
Maddy said the emergency
service staff who visited last week,
including fire investigator Wayne
Hamilton, said her quick thinking
may have saved her neighbours’
lives.
Joint partners will manage community centre
Current users
will continue
in facility
EASTERN Community Sport
and Recreation will manage
the Ascot Community Centre
in a partnership with the city
council.
The Coastal-Burwood
Community Board has approved
the lease following a request
for an expression of interest in
community management of the
public facility on the corner of
Beach Rd and Ascot Ave.
A staff report to the board
recommends that ECSR
“manage, activate and promote”
the centre as a community
facility on behalf of the city
council for up to 20 years, with
an annual $1 rent for the first five
years.
Current centre users –
including the pétanque club –
will continue to use the space.
ECSR board member Simon
Hill said the centre is a “valuable
asset” for the local community.
“We want to maintain the
usage of current members,
support them to grow their
programmes, and expand the
reach of this centre into the
wider community,” he said.
“Eastern Sport is keen to hear
from any group, individual
or programme interested in
ASSET:
The Ascot
Community
Centre also
has meeting
and functions
rooms.
working with
us to extend
community
recreation,
sport and
programme
offerings.”
Community
board
chairman
Kelly Barber Kelly Barber
said the lease
decision highlights the city
council’s long-term commitment
to community partnerships and
ongoing recognition of local
expertise.
“Eastern Community Sport
and Recreation has stepped up to
manage the centre, underlining
the importance of getting the
community involved in using
this space,” he said.
“The group’s local connections
and ability to seek out other
opportunities for QEII Park and
the centre have all contributed to
the decision.
“A connected community
brings multiple benefits, and
with these stronger councilcommunity
partnerships we can
boost the use of these great local
assets.
“A positive contribution from
the local community ensures
more value for everybody.”
The Ascot Community Centre,
which includes a function room
and two smaller meeting rooms,
is integral to the approved
management plan for QEII Park.
The plan provides for the
removal of the fence and
vegetation between the park and
the community centre to open
up and integrate the spaces,
including several pétanque
terrains.
Established in 2000,
ECRS delivers community
programmes and services
focusing on sports, activating
spaces and engaging with clubs,
schools and local groups to
benefit the wider community.
Mother who inspired movement mourned
THE FOUNDER of the She Is
Not Your Rehab movement Matt
Brown’s mother has died.
The Aranui resident said
his mum, Aitofi Telesia Pouvi
Taimalelagi, inspired him to
create the movement to combat
family violence.
He said she has left this world
– but her mark will stay for a
long time to come.
“My dear mother was my first
protector, a survivor, a warrior
and a queen,” Brown said.
“She had a generous spirit and
a good sense of humour. Her
life was one of heartache and
struggle, yet she gave birth to
nine children and worked hard
to give us the very best she could
with what she had.”
Brown started the antiviolence
movement She Is Not
Your Rehab because of his
mother, who passed away last
Thursday, and the suffering he
had witnessed in his home.
He says the movement is
“founded on her story, her
sorrow, her survival and the way
I witnessed her for many, many
years become a rehabilitation
centre for the man she loved, all
because she wanted us kids to
have a family like she had grown
up with.”
Just last week, the family
described how she felt emotional
when Dwayne “The Rock”
Johnson singled her out in a
powerful message to the family
he posted online.
The Hollywood actor
sent a message to the
family, after Brown’s son
Angelou tagged Johnson
in a video asking him to
join them in spreading
the anti-violence
message of She Is Not
Your Rehab with men
around the world.
In his response,
Johnson singled out the
work the boy’s father
does with the She is Not Your
Dwayne
“The Rock”
Johnson
Rehab group, as well as the boy’s
nana. “I admire your father,
greatly for standing
up and creating @
sheisnotyourrehab. And
to make sure his mom –
your nana – will never
be forgotten.
“Encouraging men
all over the world to
treat our women with
respect, love and most
importantly, violencefree,”
the actor said.
“You stay strong,
Angelou and keep
listening to your nana and your
Matt Brown
INSPIRATION:
Angelou with his
late grandmother
Aitofi Telesia Pouvi
Taimalelagi.
dad. One day you will become
the leader of your aiga and also a
leader the world will admire.”
In the original video that the
five-year-old posted for “The
Rock”, the boy explained how
his dad started the anti-violence
movement in honour of his
grandmother, who had suffered
domestic abuse.
“Men all around New Zealand,
the Pacific, and even the whole
wide world because his mum, my
nana, had a sad life when they
were growing up with lots of
fights at home.
“It was sad for my dad to watch
her get hurt a lot. And she had
to go away lots to many refuges,”
the boy said.
“My dad says it’s his mission to
help other men to heal so their
wives don’t have sad lives like
nana did.”
In the video, Angelou revealed
his nana was unwell with lung
cancer.
He said his father will use
the She Is Not Your Rehab
movement to help tell her story
and promised her message will
never be forgotten.
Brown and his movement’s
ultimate goal is for “Aotearoa to
become violence-free”.
“I promised her before she left
this world that I would tell her
story to the world,” Brown said
as he prepared for her funeral
and the family coming to terms
with a life without her in it.
“Her story will be a source
of redemption for many and a
way to reclaim the narrative of
domestic violence that is still a
hidden pandemic and a source
of shame here in Aotearoa and
around the world.”
A survivor of many of
life’s toughest battles, Aitofi
Taimalelagi died after a battle
with lung cancer.
She leaves behind children,
grandchildren and a legacy that
will last for generations to come.
HEROIC: Ngutuawa School [formerly Bamford School] pupils were allowed to dress up in police uniforms when
police and fire investigator Wayne Hamilton celebrated Maddy Flattery-Donohoe’s effort in helping to save her
neighbours from a house fire.
Pupils impressed by Maddy’s efforts
• From page 1
Said Maddy: “They said they
[the neighbours] could have
died, and good job.”
She said pupils at the school
were impressed by her efforts.
Maddy said what she learnt
from her experience is an
important thing to do when
people see a house fire is:
“Wake up the adults and tell
them to get out of the house.”
Maddy received a certificate,
stickers, a drink bottle and
other items from Hamilton
to congratulate her. Kim also
gave her stickers.
Maddy and other pupils at
the school got the opportunity
to try on police uniforms
during the visit.
Kim said she was proud of
her daughter’s heroic actions
and if nothing had been done
their neighbours’ house and
their house, which is about 2m
away, could have burnt down.
“I was very proud of her.
If she didn’t wake up we
could have woken up to the
neighbours’ house being burnt
down, including our own.”
Budding reporters visit
Star Media’s newsroom
By St James School
budding reporters
Cornilius, Esther, Ieasha,
John, Michael, Shaunttelle
LAST WEEK we visited Star Media
where we met the editor, Barry
Clarke, and his team of reporters
and discussed the different roles of a
newspaper reporter.
Mt Pleasant Bridge Club presents annual awards
KAY THOMAS, secretary of the
Mt Pleasant Bridge Club reports
on this year’s prizewinners.
Friday results
Anniversary Trophy: Best
overall average from all the
three-day matches – Raylene
Hunter 59.31 per cent
Nancy Alabaster pairs trophy:
Raylene Hunter and Colleen
Adam 59.22 per cent.
Highest score on a Friday:
Michelle Gan and Suzanne
Richards with 71.17 per cent.
Wednesday results
KK Trophy: Best overall
We were also able to interview
Clarke and we asked questions
about what makes a good
reporter, which he believes is
someone who is observant about
what is going on and is also a good
speller.
We found the Star Media visit
informative and enjoyable, which
gave us valuable knowledge as school
reporters.
average from all the three night
matches, Julie Smythe 54.64 per
cent.
President’s Wednesday night
pairs trophy: Raylene Hunter
and Dianne Ritchie 58.18 per
cent.
Highest score for a Wednesday
evening: Hilary Plunket and
Grania McKenzie with 68.75 per
cent
Julie and Colleen do a fantastic
job of running the bridge club but
as well as that they are also gold
star performers winning the most
of the two and three day/night
matches played with different
members during the year.
Left: Raylene
Hunter won the
most trophies
as well as the
Rita Mander tray
which is awarded
CALLS HAVE been made to
stop rates increases in response
to the Covid-19 crisis.
City councillors James Gough,
Sam MacDonald, Catherine
Chu, Phil Mauger, Aaron Keown
and James Daniels have sent a
letter to Mayor Lianne Dalziel
asking her to lead a conversation
as to how a zero per cent rates
increase could be achieved this
year.
The city council is proposing
an average rates increase of 4.65
per cent across all ratepayers in
this year’s Draft Annual Plan
which is currently under public
consultation until April 5 and
will be finalised before July 1.
The 2018-2028 Long Term
Plan also predicts a 50 per cent
rates increase over 10 years.
Said Cr MacDonald: “In
the current environment it’s
clear business as usual is not
appropriate and the council
needs to look at how we enable
this 12-month rates increase
freeze to occur, it’s crucial for
the economic confidence of our
city.”
Ms Dalziel said the last thing the council’s budget, which is
the city council needed was for not entirely funded by rates, and
someone to hi the panic button. the consequences that will flow
“Calm heads must and will from decisions we make.
prevail,” she said.
“The Annual Plan is not
“Our residents and businesses signed off for three months so
will be depending on us to we have time to ge this advice.
make adjustments, and we will, A the same time, the council
however, we will need advice is meeting with our economic
on the impacts on all aspects of development agency, ChristchurchNZ,
the Canterbury Employers’
Chamber of Commerce
and other key players so we are
best prepared for the economic
challenges that lie ahead.”
City council chief executive
Dawn Baxendale did not rule a
zero rates rise out.
