LORD
MAYOR’S
MESSAGE
CR BOB
DWYER
Parramatta’s new Aquatic and Leisure
Centre given the green light for
construction
I am excited to announce that the Sydney
Central City Planning Panel has endorsed
Council’s Development Application for
Parramatta’s new state-of-the-art aquatic and
leisure centre. This brings us one-step closer to
constructing the $77 million facility, which will
include three new pools, a water play area, and
premium fitness facilities. Council will announce
the builder early next year, with construction set
to begin in 2021. This project is being co-funded
by the NSW Government, and is expected to
be completed in 2023. I’m sure many of you,
like me, are looking forward to seeing this
project moving forward. To find out more, visit:
staff, and family members, who went head to
head for the winning title. Congratulations to
Mayor Steve Christou and Cumberland City
Council for taking home the winners shield
in this year’s match. It is wonderful to see our
Councillors spending time outdoors getting
to know members of our neighbouring council
through this fun match. I would like to thank our
team captain, Deputy Lord Mayor Cr Michelle
Garrard, as well as everyone else who attended
for an excellent display of sportsmanship and
teamwork. Until next time, Cumberland!
Parramatta recognised as Australia’s
leading Smart City for 2020
I am proud that the City of Parramatta recently
received the Leadership City Award at the third
annual Smart Cities Awards. More than 20
Local Government Areas were in the running
for the award, which recognises organisations
that demonstrate world-leading liveability,
workability and sustainability outcomes through
investment in technology and data solutions.
Council received this award for delivering a
host of innovative projects and technological
solutions during the COVID-19 pandemic,
including Melrose Park Smart Planning for
Climate Responsive Neighbourhoods, the
Parramatta CBD Parking Finder, FloodSmart,
and Storybox. It is an honour to be recognised
by the Smart Cities Council Australia New
Zealand for our commitment to creating a
smarter and future-focused City. I would like
to pay special thanks to Council’s Smart City
Advisory Committee which includes my fellow
Councillors Steven Issa and Sameer Pandey, as
well as Council’s incredible staff members, who
helped make these brilliant initiatives possible.
City of Parramatta announces two new
artworks for the CBD
Last week, City of Parramatta Council was
thrilled to reveal that Parramatta Square will
become the future home of two new Australian
public artworks. These pieces will tell the
story of Parramatta – from our Indigenous
foundations to our sporting culture. Council
was proud to commission two Western Sydneybased
artists Claire Healy and Sean Cordeiro, as
well as Indigenous Australian artist Reko Rennie,
to create the bespoke sculptures for our City.
Claire Healy and Sean Cordeiro’s A Place of
Eels is an eight-metre, vertical, highly-reflective
chrome vintage bus, representing the bus that
was used by the Parramatta Eels rugby league
team in the early 1980s. Reko Rennie’s Where
Eels Lie Down honours the history of the eel in
Parramatta, through a large-scale sculpture
that represents two eels rising from the ground
and crossing each other as they play.
These artworks will become iconic landmarks
in the Parramatta CBD and provide our
community with a vibrant new meeting spot. It
is anticipated that they will be installed by 2022,
upon completion of the Parramatta Square
public domain.
Cumberland vs Parramatta Mayoral
Earlier this month, City of Parramatta Council
and Cumberland City Council played each
other in a friendly game of cricket. Each
team in the 2020 Mayoral Challenge Cricket
Match was made up of Councillors, Council
environmental data, installed in Melrose Park – one
of Council’s smart city initiatives.
