of 8-8 with Team Metropolitan Amateur
Golf Association.
The 2020 Mid-America Junior Cup was
played at Lake Forest Country Club. The
Mid-America Junior Cup is a competition
that began in 1999 as a competition between
the Metropolitan Amateur Golf
Association and the Kansas
City Golf Association, now
Central Links Golf. This competition
began as an effort to
showcase the top juniors from
each Association’s respective
regions. The event was
created to foster camaraderie
and sportsmanship between
MAGA and KCGA.
This will be the 22nd Mid-
America Junior Cup with the
overall record being 9-9-4.
Adams
“It certainly was one of the most exciting,
thrilling ends to a Mid-America Cup
in recent memory,” said Curt Rohe, the
MAGA executive director.
Team MAGA needed 8.5 points to win the
cup. The final match on the course came all
the way down to the final hole to make that
decision. Leading 8-7 in the overall points,
Team KC would win the final match and tie
up the overall score 8-8 to keep the Cup in
Kansas City for another year.
Members of Team MAGA were Chaminade’s
Ryan Walsh, De Smet Jesuit’s
Blake Skornia, Webster Groves’ Harper
Ackerman, Vianney’s John Chapman, St.
Joseph’s Academy’s Rylie Andrews, St.
Priory water polo athlete honored
Priory sophomore Sam Adams recently
was named a 2019-20 academic all-American
by USA Water Polo. He is one of about
500 students in his grade level to receive
the honor nationwide.
Adams plays for the Saint Louis Area
Polo (SLAP) as Priory does not field a
team. His coaches are Miguel
Figueras, Colleen Lischwe
and Taylor Swyers.
“I was excited and honored
when my dad told me I was
nominated for being an academic
All-American and I
was very excited when it was
confirmed,” Adams said.
Adams is center defender.
“Sam has a bright future in
water polo,” said Figueras,
who formerly coached at De
Smet Jesuit. “He is big and strong. He
has battled through some injuries and is
developing a strong outside shot. His leg
strength is getting much better. He also
loves to work out outside of the pool.”
Besides water polo, Adams is on the
Priory wrestling team and baseball team.
“Sam is extremely driven and loves learning,”
Figueras said. “He is very coachable
and a great teammate. He has been part of
the Midwest Zone Olympic Development
Program in the past and has made travel
teams within this program.
“We really love having Sam on our club
and representing a school like Priory that
doesn’t offer water polo.”
Figueras also noted that St. Louis Priory
has a reputation of having a very strong
rigorous academic reputation, of which,
Adams is a part.
MICDS, from page 35
trolled the game in the midfield. Our team
defending was outstanding led by our center
backs, Joe Nicpon and Eric Nohara-Leclair.”
While Fischer did not have a crystal ball
showing him that the Rams would be playing
in late November, he said he thought
his club was solid.
“I knew we had the potential to be good
and the mentality necessary to succeed in
the postseason,” Fischer said. “We had a
core group of experienced seniors who
were very talented and very motivated. I
felt that if some of our less experienced
players could adapt to the varsity-level
speed quickly, we could field a pretty competitive
team.”
MICDS started off the season by playing
three consecutive games that went into
overtime, two of which ended in “heartbreaking
losses,” Fisher said.
With a 1-3 start, the Rams faced rival
Priory following three consecutive losses.
“We were against a very good Priory
team. We were outstanding in that game
and won 3-1 which gave us a lot of confidence
moving forward,” Fischer said. “We
didn’t lose after that.”
MICDS defeated Westminster Christian
Academy 2-1 in two overtimes to win the
District 3 championship.
Then came three long bus rides for the
Rams en route to winning the first state
title in the program’s history.
“It still doesn’t seem like it has totally set
in,” said Birkel, who earned first-team alldistrict
honors and finished with 33 goals
and 16 assists at MICDS. “It’s amazing
to end senior year on a win. It’s great to
finally get a banner in the gym and helps to
legitimize the program.”
Fischer was happy for his Rams.
“They were thrilled,” Fischer said. “I
think there was a sense of relief as well that
they made it through the season unscathed
by the virus and were able to accomplish
this goal that they wanted so badly.”
