Alex Todd: League player of the decade
• By Will Evans
LINWOOD KEAS and
Canterbury Bulls stalwart
Alex Todd’s naming as the
Canterbury Rugby League
player of the decade is a
reminder there will always
be a place for hard-working,
consistent, tough grafters in the
code.
Following in the footsteps
of Jonny Limmer, the
CRL’s player of the 2000-10
decade, the prop was judged
Canterbury’s standout player of
the 2010s by a panel comprising
the Bulls’ coaches over that
time frame – Brent Stuart,
Mike Dorreen, Darrell Coad
and Andrew Auimatagi.
The judges voted for their
three top players of the decade
on a 3-2-1 basis – Todd was the
resounding winner with 10 of a
possible 12 votes.
Hornby duo James
Baxendale and Corey
Lawrie, Celebration great Kyle
Leka, Riccarton icon Shane
Tamatea and Linwood veteran
Erwin Sauni also received
votes.
“It means bloody heaps,”
said Todd.
“Considering the players
I’ve played alongside, to be
receiving this award is pretty
unbelievable.”
Todd grew up in Redcliffs
and developed through
Linwood’s junior ranks.
Roll
concerns
due to
increasing
number of
pre-schools
• By Bea Gooding
AN EARLY childhood centre is
worried its roll size will continue
to decrease if the city council
doesn’t address overcrowding of
pre-schools in the area.
Huntsbury Preschool is
calling for the city council to
make changes to the Resource
Management Act to limit how
many centres can operate in one
area.
Centre manager Jane Russell
said there were 13 pre-schools
within a five-minute drive of
the Huntsbury Community
Centre, where they operated
from.
She is now asking for the
Spreydon-Cashmere Community
Board’s support in having these
requirements changed.
But city council head of
resource consents John Higgins
said the RMA can only be
changed by Parliament, and the
issue should be raised with the
Ministry for the Environment, or
the Ministry of Education.
Orphanage life shapes ‘caring’ volunteer
• By Bea Gooding
EVEN THOUGH Lesley O’Neill
grew up without her parents, she
never once felt like she had no
family to turn to.
With an absent father, and
after her mother died of an
illness, life changed forever
at three-years-old when the
Nazareth House orphanage
in Sydenham became her new
home.
But having the sisters and
other children by her side for the
next 14 years it felt like growing
up in a big family.
“It was a home and there
were a lot of other people. Like
any upbringing, there’s always
positives and negatives – but the
positives totally outweighed the
negatives,” she said.
“I guess what happened was
I had an experience that a lot of
people have never had. The skills
that I have now are part of the
nurturing I received as a child.”
Learning the value of hard
work and giving back from a
young age was what fuelled her
drive these days to volunteer at
the Christchurch South Fruit and
Vegetable Collective, helping out
with setting up the hall and bags
in time for the delivery trucks.
Her tenacity in the last six years
was why she was nominated as a
recipient of a Spreydon-Cashmere
Community Service Award this
year.
Some of the jobs she had
growing up was answering the
phone or opening the door to
visitors. But one of the biggest
lessons she took away from it all
was the determination the sisters
showed when it came to keeping
the children alive.
“THe sisters used to go out
into the community, begging for
money and food to keep us all
alive. They would come home,
they were exhausted; their shoes
all worn out,” said O’Neill.
“THat taught me about caring
for other people.”
THe fruit and vegetable collective
ESSENTIAL:
Volunteer
Leslie O’Neill
and Richard
Clemance were
both recipients
of a Spreydon-
Cashmere
Community
Service Award
this year.
processes about 200 orders of
fresh produce each week and are
distributed to eight community
hubs, which is then delivered to
homes across the city – many of
which are on low incomes.
“I’m not looking for a reward
for my work, it’s about what I can
do to support others. Fruit and
vegetables are the food that keeps
people alive,” she said.
O’Neill was not the only one
recognised from the collective.
It was a “big surprise” and
a “humbling” feeling when
Richard Clemance found out he
was also a recipient of the service
award.
For the past six years, he has
helped set up and pack down
the premises, supervised the
unloading and packing process,
and setting up the packing line
for the 20 volunteers.
THe collective purchases
produce from wholesalers
and supermarkets and are
available to the public to buy
in bags, providing a more
affordable option for homes to
get their 5+ A Day.
THe delivery service also
helped people who could not
easily leave their homes, such as
elderly people.
“It gets me out of the house
and it helps a lot of people. It’s
also a good social time, there’s
a good bunch of people [at the
collective],” he said.
He believed others should give
it a go.
“It doesn’t matter how much
or how little it is, every little bit
helps,” Clemance said.
“I try my best; someone’s got
to do it.”
SPREYDON-CASHMERE COMMUNITY SERVICE AND YOUTH SERVICE AWARDS
People in the Spreydon-Cashmere area have
been acknowledged for their service to the
community. Today Southern View profiles who
they are
Group Award: Rowley
Mamaz
Rowley Mamaz has been active
in Hoon Hay Rowley community
events, sports clubs and events,
school events, and the community
centre for more than 10
years.
Members Julie Ausage, Susana
Muamua, Tiresa Sio, and
Fetalaiga Tomuli, have recently
established a community watch
group to address the harmful
behaviour of troubled youth,
supporting them to turn their
behaviour around.
Rowley Mamaz has assisted
police with reducing crime locally,
and they are currently
working with Christchurch
South Community Patrols of NZ
to become fully-fledged community
patrollers.
Olwyn Rudd
Olwyn Rudd joined the committee
of Cracroft Community
Centre (The Old Stone House)
in 2000. She was chairperson
from 2010 until her resignation
in 2019. Olwyn has continued
to serve on the committee and
was elected a life member in
2020. From 2000 to 2010, Olwyn
managed the centre’s mid-week
bookings and its housekeeping.
The Old Stone House was extensively
damaged in the February
22, 2011, earthquake. Olwyn
and her committee worked with
the city council and Beca Heritage
to ensure the building was
restored to its previous standard,
ready for re-opening in early
2018.
Greg Burgess
Greg Burgess has been the
chairman of the Landsdowne
Community Centre Hall Committee
for 28 years. He puts in
many hours most weeks leading
the local hall committee, attending
to hall hire inquiries,
organising repairs and hall
maintenance, and working with
user groups to negotiate hire-age
agreements. Thanks to Greg’s
dedication and service, the hall
is a much-loved and widely-used
community asset in Bowenvale.
Alistair Berney and Bernie
Pullinger
Alastair Berney has been a
committee member of the Hoon
Hay Community Association
since it was formed and registered
in 2017, and chairman
since mid-2018. Bernie Pullinger
has served in the roles of both
treasurer and secretary on the
association’s committee since
2017.
Alastair and Bernie have both
done a sterling job promoting
the purposes of the association,
namely building community
connectedness, improving safety
and security, and endeavouring
to provide a community hub.
Within the past 12 months, the
majority of the association’s
committee members have
resigned and it is only due to
Alastair and Bernie’s efforts that
the committee has remained in
existence.
Since November 2019, these
two stalwarts have actively recruited
new committee members
and put the association back on
its feet for the benefit of the all
Hoon Hay residents.
Jeremy Cattell and Hugh
Joughin
Jeremy Cattell has been a
volunteer with the city council’s
graffiti programme for 25
years, working in Somerfield,
Spreydon, Addington, and Hillmorton.
Hugh Joughin has been a volunteer
with the programme for
12 years, working in Beckenham
and surrounding areas.
Hugh initially registered
with the Phillipstown Strengthening
Communities Graffiti
Project in 2007, and due to the
success of this project, the city
council established the graffiti
office and the off the wall Programme.
Jeremy and Hugh’s work as
tag spotters and tag removers involves
recording, reporting, and
removing graffiti vandalism.
‘There are only so many children in the area’
Jane Russell
• From page 1
Said Russell: “There’s just
a concern that the market is
absolutely saturated with preschools
now, we’re all getting the
same amount of money from the
Ministry; there are only so many
children in the area.
“We’re all very different and
offer different things, but the pool
you’re getting is much less than
what it was before.”
Currently, in
the RMA, a consent
authority
must not regard
trade competition
or its effects
when considering
new applications,
including
pre-schools.
Russell said
roll sizes at preschools nearby
have dropped, and not just because
of Covid-19.
Established 40 years ago,
Huntsbury Preschool used to
regularly reach their maximum
capacity of 30 children.
As a not-for-profit centre, any
proceeds go back into improving
the environment, learning
opportunities, updating cultural
resources and providing a high
teacher-to-child ratio.
Demand has been low in recent
years due to parents having more
OVERCROWDED: Huntsbury Preschool is concerned about the increasing number of
preschools in the area and says a limit needs to be put in place. PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN
options to choose from, said
Russell.
“When I first started 23 years
ago, you could count the number
of centres on your hand,” she
said.
“We’re a small pre-school up
on the hill, we rely on the community.
I’d really like [council] to
consider applications for centres
and know how many there actually
are in this area.”
The RMA promotes the sustainable
management of natural
and physical resources, such as
land, air and water.
Community board chairwoman
Karolin Potter sympathised
with the centre’s concerns as it
was one of the only standalone
community-led services in the
area.
But she did not see how the
environment influenced who
could establish a childcare
facility.
“My heart breaks over this,
I don’t want this community
pre-school competed out of the
market,” she said.
“I can only imagine that having
no limit would be competing.
But in a democracy, we’re not in
a position to say to people that
they cannot develop a business,
or stop people from putting up a
child care.
“There’s nothing wrong
with being motivated by
commercial interests but the
children must come first, and
what can be done to support the
community.”
Higgins said the District Plan
does not control the location
of pre-schools regarding the
commercial impact on nearby
centres.
“Doing so would be problematic
under the Resource
Management Act as it specifically
seeks to avoid trade competition
arguments.
However, “it does seek to
protect centres from commercial
activities setting up outside
commercial zones. This doesn’t
apply to pre-schools as they are
provided for in residential and
other zones.”
A report will be presented
by city council staff at the next
board meeting, including advice
on existing consent requirements.
Success credited to simple league principles
• From page 1
After dabbling in rugby union
with Sumner, he returned to the
Keas as a teenager and made his
senior debut as the club took out
the 2007 premier reserves title.
A year later he helped the Keas
lift the Pat Smith Trophy by beating
Papanui in the grand final
and in 2009 he made his debut
as a 19-year-old in the Stuartcoached
Bartercard Premiershipwinning
side.
Todd briefly returned to the
15-a-side game with Sumner in
2014, but he was back on Linwood’s
roster the following
season and immediately regained
his representative spot.
“I definitely missed the league
environment, but going to rugby
was something I wanted to do –
go back to my junior club where I
played rugby as a kid, give it a go
and see what it was about,” Todd
said.
The durable Todd has been at
the forefront during the Keas’
run of five straight CRL grand
final triumphs from 2016-20.
Incredibly, he has won the Mel
Cooke Trophy as the standout
player in the decider an unprecedented
three times – in 2017-18
and again this season.
He has also been a fixture for
his province over the past six
seasons, again captaining an
experienced Bulls squad in the
NZRL National Premiership
campaign.
The 31-year-old credits his
individual success to some simple
rugby league principles.
“My fitness, and just turning
up and helping my mate out on
the field. I’m not the flashest of
players, but I try and get in and
do my job,” he said.
“A lot of it’s to do with our
culture at Linwood as well. You
always want to be there for your
mate and not let them down.”
A regular skipper for Linwood
and Canterbury, the battle-hardened
Todd has slipped seamlessly
into a leadership role in recent
seasons.
“It’s something I’ve slowly
moved into. I’d been at Linwood
for a wee while and when Aga
(Fiso) stepped away from the
leadership group (he retired in
2017) it was a natural progression
to move into that role with Paul
(Sauni).
“I’m probably not the biggest
talker but I do try to lead through
my actions.”
has been
named the
Canterbury
Rugby
League’s
player of
the 2010-20
decade.
in Todd’s career, it’s the guidance
of Auimatagi.
He was Todd’s first premier
reserves coach, while the pair
played together in the Keas’ 2008
grand final win and the Bulls’
successful Bartercard Premiership
campaign a year later.
Auimatagi and Todd then
teamed up as coach and frontrow
anchor in five straight grand
finals (2015-19) for four wins, and
in every Bulls campaign since
2016.
“Andrew’s had a huge influence
on my career,” Todd said.
“When I started playing premier
Bs in 2007 he was my coach,
and I came through and played
alongside him at club and rep
level, now he’s coached me for a
long time. But he’s a really good
bloke and really knows the game.
“Another guy is (former
teammate and current Keas
coach) Aga, he’s a pretty amazing
leader and someone I’ve always
looked up to,” he said, adding he
was in no rush to hang up the
boots.
“As long as the body keeps
holding up alright I’ll keep playing
for as long as I can. You’re a
long time retired.”
The 150-game milestone for
the Keas is the next achievement
on Todd’s horizon in 2021 after
he brought up three figures in
2017.
CRL chief executive Duane
Fyfe praised Todd’s contribution
when the award was presented.
“‘Toddy is a great ambassador
when representing his club and
province, and has a reputation
for doing his talking on the field
with his direct style of play.
“This is an outstanding
accolade based on his
commitment, perseverance and
achievement over the previous
decade.”
THE ELECTION of Green
questions about who was
the youngest member of
Parliament.
Swarbrick, at 23-years-old,
was the seventh youngest MP
when she entered Parliament in
2017. But the youngest MP had
close connections with our own
James Frederick Stuart-
Wortley was just 20-years-old
when elected to represent the
Christchurch Country seat in
New Zealand’s first Parliament
in 1853.
Stuart-Wortley was the third
son of the Lord Wharncliffe
II. He arrived in Christchurch
aged 18-years-old and managed
a block of land which now
encompasses the Charlesworth
Wetland Reserve.
The land was owned by his
James Frederick Stuart-
Wortley – New Zealand’s
youngest ever MP.
father; Wharncliffe never came
to New Zealand but vested his
son with power of attorney.
Charlesworth Wetland
Reserve is now a significant
wildlife refuge where more than
130,000 native trees and shrubs
have been planted so as to restore
the former pasture land to
its original wetland character.
Stuart-Wortley came on the
Charlotte-Jane and The Cyclopedia
of New Zealand describes
him as “a man of means, and an
accomplished gentleman.”
His electorate included much
of rural Canterbury and Westland.
He resigned in July 1855
and returned to England.
Little more is known of him
other than that he unsuccessfully
stood for the House of
Commons in the United Kingdom
in 1865 as Conservative
Party candidate for Sheffield.
Gala a chance to see
school’s new look
• By Kim Thomas
FOOD, FAMILY, fun and
festivity were all in abundance
at the recent Oaklands School
twilight gala.
The gala also provided an
opportunity for the Halswell
community to tour the school’s
recently completed campus redevelopment.
President of the Oaklands Te
Kura o Ōwaka Parent Teacher
Association Cameron Montague-
Ebbs said the gala was typically
the school’s biggest fundraising
event.
In previous years money
raised had gone towards paying
for a new junior playground
and educational equipment and
furniture.
This year the fundraising aspect
of the gala was secondary to
bringing people together.
Said Montague-Ebbs: “We (the
PTA) were so pleased with the
turnout at the gala. Hundreds
of families came to see students
perform songs, waiata and
dances. They seemed to enjoy the
food and entertainment on offer
and it felt like there was a real
buzz with people catching up
and enjoying the warm weather
and being together.”
Oaklands Te Kura o Ōwaka
principal Margaret Trotter said
it was a delight to see the school
filled with families celebrating
the end of what had been a challenging
year.
“The students work really hard
on perfecting their gala performances
and seem to really enjoy
entertaining their families and
whanau on gala night,” she said
“The PTA also work hard to
organise this important community
event and we are grateful to
all the volunteers for their efforts.
“It was a pleasure to show
‘The Brotherhood’ gets
behind men facing adversity
STUDENTS FROM St Thomas
of Canterbury College are the
first campaign donors to a
new initiative for men facing
adversity in Christchurch.
‘The Brotherhood’
programme based at He Waka
Tapu in Wainoni is all about
activating the community to
provide men with toiletries,
quality clothing and bedding,
along with other donations that
support overall well-being.
The Brotherhood is based on
the successful Christchurch
Aunties model, which has been
operating for more than four
years.
Heather Milne co-ordinates
both projects, and says she was
incredibly impressed at the
kindness demonstrated by the St
Thomas of Canterbury students.
“Toiletries such as shampoo,
toothbrushes, and deodorant
mean that men are more confident
when attending courses,
training, and job interviews” she
said.
Aidan Baker, religious education
teacher at St Thomas of
Canterbury College, responded
quickly to the request for help to
support men who are attending
programmes around addiction,
family violence, and suicide
prevention.
BROTHERS TOGETHER:
St Thomas of Canterbury
College students Sam
Pritchard and Callaghan
Jones with some of the
school’s donations.
He said the year 13 leadership
team created the motto,
‘brothers together, brothers
forever.’
“This was an awesome
opportunity for our junior
syndicate to demonstrate the
school’s core values as well as
New route for cycleway to protect estuary edge
A CYCLE connection between
Linwood Ave and the Ferrymead
Bridge will follow a new route.
The city council’s urban
development and transport
committee has decided to alter
the route of the Rapanui – Shag
Rock Cycleway
has been made
to minimise the
environmental
impacts of the
cycleway on the
estuary edge.
Mike
Davidson
The cycleway
will now
travel through
Charlesworth Reserve rather
than going around the estuary
on Humphreys Drive.
The existing cycle lanes on
Humphreys Drive will also be
improved to provide an alternative
route for people who want to
cycle along the road.
Said committee chairman
Mike Davidson.“With the final
stage of the Rapanui – Shag Rock
Cycleway and the last stage of the
Christchurch Coastal Pathway
getting under way next year we
will soon have a cycle path all the
way from the central city to
Sumner.
“It will be an attractive route
for both local residents and visitors
to the city.”
Work on the Linwood Ave to
Ferrymead Bridge section of the
Rapanui – Shag Rock Cycleway
will get under way early next
year, starting along Humphreys
Drive between Dyers Rd and the
Charlesworth Reserve Bridge.
Work on this section involves
planting 3000 new plants that
will help with the health of the
Linwood Canal and support the
local inanga species.
Construction of the section of
the cycleway through Charlesworth
Reserve will start in the
middle of next year. The cycleway
will follow an existing path
through the reserve, which will
be widened to 3m and asphalted.
The cycleway will then connect
back onto Humphreys Drive on
the reserve side of the Ferrymead
shops.
The final stage of the Rapanui
– Shag Rock Cycleway is one of
the Government’s ‘shovel ready’
projects that are designed to
stimulate the economy and create
jobs.
During October’s local body
as one of her main priorities for
this term.
“We need a fully integrated
would essentially be an alliance
of contractors who can take
done,” she said during the
campaign.
Season’s greetings
Dear Wigram Resident,
There is no doubt that 2020 has been a year like no other. It has been challenging
in so many ways and I want to thank everyone for their wonderful efforts as part of
the team of 5 million who looked after one another during the lockdown.
I also want to thank the many thousands of essential workers who live in our
corner of Christchurch who have worked to keep us safe.
I hope you have a chance to have a rest, catch your breath and spend some time
in the sun with your loved ones. Merry Christmas!
