4 Thursday December 17 2020 Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz SPREYDON-CASHMERE COMMUNITY SERVICE AND YOUTH SERVICE AWARDS People in the Spreydon-Cashmere area have been acknowledged for their service to the community. Today Southern View profiles who they are Group Award: Rowley Mamaz Rowley Mamaz has been active in Hoon Hay Rowley community events, sports clubs and events, school events, and the community centre for more than 10 years. Members Julie Ausage, Susana Muamua, Tiresa Sio, and Fetalaiga Tomuli, have recently established a community watch group to address the harmful behaviour of troubled youth, supporting them to turn their behaviour around. Rowley Mamaz has assisted police with reducing crime locally, and they are currently working with Christchurch South Community Patrols of NZ to become fully-fledged community patrollers. Olwyn Rudd Olwyn Rudd joined the committee of Cracroft Community Centre (The Old Stone House) in 2000. She was chairperson from 2010 until her resignation in 2019. Olwyn has continued to serve on the committee and was elected a life member in 2020. From 2000 to 2010, Olwyn managed the centre’s mid-week bookings and its housekeeping. The Old Stone House was extensively damaged in the February 22, 2011, earthquake. Olwyn and her committee worked with the city council and Beca Heritage to ensure the building was restored to its previous standard, ready for re-opening in early 2018. Greg Burgess Greg Burgess has been the chairman of the Landsdowne Community Centre Hall Committee for 28 years. He puts in many hours most weeks leading the local hall committee, attending to hall hire inquiries, organising repairs and hall maintenance, and working with user groups to negotiate hire-age agreements. Thanks to Greg’s dedication and service, the hall is a much-loved and widely-used community asset in Bowenvale. Alistair Berney and Bernie Pullinger Alastair Berney has been a committee member of the Hoon Hay Community Association since it was formed and registered in 2017, and chairman since mid-2018. Bernie Pullinger has served in the roles of both treasurer and secretary on the association’s committee since 2017. Alastair and Bernie have both done a sterling job promoting the purposes of the association, namely building community connectedness, improving safety and security, and endeavouring to provide a community hub. Within the past 12 months, the majority of the association’s committee members have resigned and it is only due to Alastair and Bernie’s efforts that the committee has remained in existence. Since November 2019, these two stalwarts have actively recruited new committee members and put the association back on its feet for the benefit of the all Hoon Hay residents. Jeremy Cattell and Hugh Joughin Jeremy Cattell has been a volunteer with the city council’s graffiti programme for 25 years, working in Somerfield, Spreydon, Addington, and Hillmorton. Hugh Joughin has been a volunteer with the programme for 12 years, working in Beckenham and surrounding areas. Hugh initially registered with the Phillipstown Strengthening Communities Graffiti Project in 2007, and due to the success of this project, the city council established the graffiti office and the off the wall Programme. Jeremy and Hugh’s work as tag spotters and tag removers involves recording, reporting, and removing graffiti vandalism. All residents of, and visitors to the suburbs where Jeremy and Hugh volunteer, benefit from having graffiti-free communities. Rowley Resource Centre Hine Brown is a board member for Rowley Resource Centre. She has run the Rowley Veggie Co-op hub based at the centre for the past two years. Hine also supports groups that meet at the centre, and this enables Rowley Resource Centre staff to focus on their own dedicated roles. Hine also assists with local community events. Cameron and his talented team led us through a campaign that felt seamless. Outstanding organisation and communication combined with Cameron’s superb negotiation skills have successfully sold our home. SOUTHERN VIEW Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz Thursday December 17 2020 5 Liz and Doug Cox have both been involved with Rowley Resource Centre since its establishment more than 25 years ago. They both ensure the centre’s flower and vegetable gardens are well maintained, and they are key members of the veggie co-op. Liz also keeps the centre clean and tidy and meets and greets community members who visit. Aroha Swan has been the chairwoman of the Rowley Resource Centre for more than three years and has been part of the vege co-op team for two years. She supports many groups at the centre, including picking up and dropping off those who attend the seniors’ group. She also ensures the centre is clean and tidy. Aroha is also a board member for Kereru Sports & Cultural Club, and she assists with local community events. Members of the Rowley Resource Centre were recipients at the Spreydon- Cashmere Community Service Awards. Jason Chee Jason Chee was a 24/7 youth worker at Hillmorton High School for seven years, mentoring, coaching sport, and participating in adventure-based outdoor learning with year nine to 13 students for 10 hours a week. He also ran a youth group, organised touch rugby teams, and community camps to Mt Hutt. For a number of years, Jason has been on the organising committee for Hoon Hay Fiesta, Hoon Hay Hoops, and Lalaga Night Market, and he organises security volunteers for the fiesta and Pacific Series. Jason’s involvement with Suburbs Rugby Football Club spans 10 years in various roles as player, junior team coach, committee member, and currently club captain. Spreydon-Cashmere Youth Service Awards 2020 recipients Bailey Johnston Bailey Johnston has been a youth group leader at South West Baptist Church for 18 months, and Sunday school leader for two years. Bailey also mentors girls at Christchurch South Intermediate alongside the youth worker. Bailey was a volunteer in the SHARP after-school and holiday programmes for two years. While studying full-time for a university degree, Bailey still finds time to volunteer at Sunday school, youth group and the local school community. Hannah Poole Hannah Poole has been a leader at South West Baptist Church Sunday School for eight years, youth group for 18 months, and Girls’ Brigade for six years. She was also a leader at SHARP after-school and holiday programmes for six months, producing outstanding programmes and props. Though now employed fulltime, Hannah still volunteers at youth group, Girls’ Brigade, and Sunday school.
