the landscape, a hot wind called ‘The Loo’ swirls its
relentless breath of fire across barren plains. The
elderly, young, and animals are kept inside when The
Loo blows. Locals have adapted to avoid the dreaded
‘Loo lagna’, or heatroke, to which I succumbed
twice. Even the Marwari has developed to withstand
the powerful sand storms, known as ‘Kali Andhi’, or
‘black storm’ that darken the horizon, billowing and
swirling with little warning, by fully rotating and
flattening their unique ears. To thrive in these conditions,
the Marwari horse developed into a physically
strong but lean breed. Beauty and pride was bred
into them, giving the Marwari it’s characteristically
high head carriage and natural forward going enthusiasm.
They are strikingly independent and intelligent,
always demanding respect from their human
partner.
