Demand for housing in Selwyn outstrips 

Move to set

more than halved in Selwyn 

as demand for housing 

dramatically outstrips supply. 

Growth in demand for real 

estate comes as Environment 

Canterbury moves to set aside 

more rural-zoned land for housing 

at Rolleston. 

Ray White Rolleston branch 

manager Nick Booth said Selwyn 

had about 900 listings about 11 

months ago. That figure had now 

dropped to about 390. 

“The levels of properties that 

have been listed for us have 

slightly increased, but because of 

that greater demand the days on 

market have shortened,” Booth 

said. 

Some listed properties were 

selling even prior to hitting 

the market, with buyers from 

around the country recognising 

the value for money in the 

district. 

Julian Twiss of Harcourts Lincoln 

said real estate agents were

planning process, on whether 

rural land it has identified for future 

development – at Rolleston, 

Rangiora and Kaiapoi – should 

be able to be rezoned by district 

councils. 

Selwyn’s population is climbing 

by about 3000 a year, and 

projected to increase by more 

than 70 per cent from 71,200 today 

to and set to 121,610 within 

30 years.

Canterbury Regional Policy 

Statement would enable councils 

to develop plans and consult 

with communities on additional 

land for housing, through their 

district planning processes. 

The proposal identifies future 

development areas for urban 

housing in the three areas and 

provides guidance for councils 

when re-zoning land. The proposed 

change was notified on 

January 16. People can have their 

say by submitting a written comment 

by February 15.

carefully consider all the comments 

received, and then deliver 

a report to the Minister for the 

Environment to show how the 

submissions have been considered 

and any recommended 

changes. 

Selwyn MP Nicola Grigg said 

she welcomed the move, in light 

of the severe nationwide housing 

shortage where Kiwis were being 

priced out of the market as home 

construction failed to keep up 

with demand.

KIWI INGENUITY found 

mechanic Merv Ferguson just a 

few months into his late-in-life 

retirement, and hauled him back 

to the workshop. 

The result is a booming business 

based at Lincoln, setting a 

New Zealand precedent in an 

emerging international industry. 

The 74-year-old said he started 

“tinkering” following retiring 

from his job as a mechanic at an 

agricultural contractor at the age 

of 69. Consequently, retirement 

lasted a mere 18 months. 

“I did and I didn’t (enjoy 

retirement), because I got bored, 

there was nothing else to do,” 

Ferguson said. 

Oil filter disposal caught his 

imagination, he wondered about 

turning these waste items from 

cars, trucks and boats into a 

usable commodity. 

“I could see they were a 

recyclable item and they were 

just going into rubbish bins and 

landfill, there was money in 

them to be made.” 

With no-one else in New 

Zealand doing anything similar, 

he set about working out how to 

crush and bale the filters so they 

can be turned into a “furnace 

block” for export to Shanghai, 

where the two metals in the 

filters of aluminium and steel are 

recovered to make new products. 

That’s when the potential of 

a 40-tonne log splitter came to 

mind. He bought one and modified 

it by putting bigger rams 

on it and installing catch tanks, 

to capture the oil which comes 

out of the filters when they are 

crushed. 

He started crushing filters in 

his backyard, sourcing them 

by calling on garages around 

Christchurch. 

“It grew and grew and grew,

and just got out of control and 

we had to move,” Ferguson said. 

Ferguson moved the business 

from his backyard in Hornby to 

a Lincoln workshop about three 

years ago, and Filter Crusher 

NZ was born, the business he 

operates in partnership with wife 

Val, son David and daughter 

Carmen. 

The splitter crushes one filter at 

a time, and has been crushing up 

to one-and-a-half tonne per day. 

“And that’s been a slow process,” 

he said. 

In recent months, Ferguson 

has been trying to find a better 

way, and saw what an Australian 

company was doing with a baler, 

so asked a company in China to 

make something similar, modified 

to have tanks underneath to 

catch the oil. 

That $70,000 machine has just 

arrived. 

“With this big new machine, 

she will do that (up to 1.5 tonne) 

in an hour,” he said. 

But he has no plans to get rid 

of the log splitter, parked up in 

the corner of the workshop. 

“That’s number one, that’s what 

we started with, no we won’t get 

rid of that,” Ferguson said. 

He expects to be able to now 

crush up to seven tonne per day, 

and by next year reach an annual 

turnover of half a million dollars 

per year. 

Ferguson continues to collect 

filters from garages around 

Christchurch, and Waste 

Management delivers millions 

of filters to him per year, from 

hundreds of garages around the 

country. 

Filter Crusher today employs 

six staff. It does not advertise, 

nor has a website. 

“We get phone calls from 

people, and pick up three to four 

new clients per month. We do 

field days at Kirwee, that’s every 

two years, and that’s about it, because 

we get enough work with 

Waste Management supplying us 

with all the filters.” 

Retirement is now a distant 

memory; he is full-time in the 

workshop from 7am to 3.30pm 

weekdays. But he finds this 

leaves plenty of time for his 

long-time hobby of doing up and 

racing vintage cars, something 

he likes to do on weekends with 

his family.

Bays region, winning and being selected for many local art awards.

Covid-19: ‘It just hit me, it dropped

AFTER AGONISING over 

whether to take up an overseas 

coaching assignment with Fiji 

in a Covid-19 dead zone, Jason 

Ryan grimaced as he made a 

chilling call home to his family 

in Lincoln. 

The professional rugby opportunity 

of a lifetime ended up 

resembling a near-death experience 

in France for the Crusaders 

assistant coach, when he was enveloped 

in a team-wide outbreak 

of the contagious virus. 

Ryan was far from the jovial 

character he typically displays 

during training sessions with 

the Super Rugby Aotearoa 

champions, when revisiting his 

close encounter with the global 

pandemic. 

The specialist forwards coach 

had reservations about joining 

Vern Cotter’s Fiji squad for the 

eight-team Autumn Nations 

Cup, and those concerns were 

realised two weeks into the trip 

when he tested positive on November 

15. 

Initially Ryan brushed off 

the result – one of 29 positives 

among a tour party of 42 – at 

Fiji’s base in Limoges. 

“I felt fine, no problem. For the 

next couple of days I was training 

with coaches, we were getting on

with it, we were training from 

a distance, isolated and doing everything 

right.” 

Then his health took a sinister 

turn. 

“On the fourth day it just hit 

me, it dropped me. It was tough. 

I went through the process you 

read about. You lose your taste 

and smell.” 

Ryan’s breathing deteriorated 

to such an extent he was taken to 

hospital for a heart scan, fearing 

the worst: “I said ‘Doc, there’s a 

couple of numbers here if I’m no 

good’.” 

Fortunately the scan was clear, 

not that Ryan, 45, was comforted 

as he returned to the team hotel, 

under the care of the squad’s two 

doctors. 

“I was aching and sweating 

at night. I felt like my body was 

shutting down,” he said. 

A 180-game front rower for 

Sydenham, Ryan had been 

involved in plenty of collapsed 

scrums, but this pressure was 

unique. 

“It was like someone was 

standing on your chest. Imagine 

you go for a big run, then 

someone stands on your chest 

and you’ve got to breathe. I could 

only breathe about a quarter of 

the way in. 

“It’s hard to explain. It was the 

hardest time of my life, and the 

hardest part was facetiming family 

at home.” 

After a couple of updates with 

Cath and the kids, Ryan curtailed 

face-to-face contact: 

“I just gave up on it, I said: ‘It’s 

just not worth seeing me like 

this’.” 

Ryan’s plight also prompted 

him to second guess his decision 

to tour, again. 

“Getting on the plane to the 

other side of the world is probably 

one of the toughest things 

I’ve ever done. I nearly stayed at 

home. A big cloud came over me, 

I’m thinking: ‘What am I doing 

here?’ Wales and Scotland were 

still in lockdown,” he said. 

“When we were walking 

through customs in Auckland 

there was nothing open, no duty 

free nowhere to eat and here we 

are getting on a half-full plane to 

Dubai.” 

During recovery Ryan was 

given reassurances by medical 

staff and techniques to aid his 

oxygen intake, though he still 

fretted in isolation.

“They said in a couple of days 

you’ll be fine, your body is fighting 

it naturally, and I just didn’t 

believe it,” he said 

Thankfully, the prognosis was 

accurate. 

“After a couple of days I 

thought ‘s**t, I’ve come back 

now, I’m breathing’,” Ryan 

recalled. 

Eventually only two of the 

tour party avoided Covid-19, 

and in a testament to the team’s 

recovery – and determination – 

they managed to play one test, 

a 38-24 win over Georgia, after 

forfeiting games with France, 

Italy and Scotland. 

That victory at Murrayfield, 

is a particularly proud achievement 

for Ryan, who has enjoyed 

multiple successes alongside 

Scott Robertson. 

“We went through some 

tough times together. We 

wanted to have a great 

week (before Georgia) and we 

did. I’m sure some resilience 

genes grew over that time,” 

said Ryan, who is contracted 

through to the 2023 World Cup, 

in France. 

Ryan had a final Covid-19 test 

before flying home and received

the importance of family 

and your support network,” he 

said. 

“They (the kids) knew what 

was going on but Cath (released) 

the information quite well I 

think. Mum and dad knew I was 

pretty sick too, but they probably 

didn’t know how sick.” 

Ryan was grinning again at 

Crusaders training last week, 

cajoling the pack, relieved to get 

back to normalcy. 

“I’m just so grateful,” he 

said: “That was my 2020 word: 

Grateful.”

Rakaia Basin

discovering the Rakaia Basin’s 

glacial history. 

Waghorn said he was looking 

forward to sharing his knowledge

locality for understanding 

the glacial and climatic history of 

New Zealand in its recent past. 

“On this trip, you will see 

first-hand how this beautiful 

landscape has been shaped by 

geological and glacial forces. You 

will learn to identify and distinguish 

these glacial sediments and 

hear how they reflect changes in 

the global climate over the last 

part of the Quaternary Period,” 

Waghorn said. 

They would also talk about the 

latest research techniques that 

had helped unravel the timing of 

glacial events, and how the country’s 

glacial history correlated 

with similar events in other parts 

of the world.

is based at Rolleston 

where he oversees 

25 urban volunteer 

brigades comprising 

about 650 volunteers. 

He is also team leader 

of FENZ’s Southern 

Urban Search and 

Rescue team. Susan 

Sandys spoke to him 

about his roles 

How long have you been in 

these two FENZ roles, and 

what do you like about doing 

them? 

Seven years now . . . it’s more 

about the helping of the people 

and the variety of the work. 

There’s a lot of administration 

and everything as the area 

commander but also I’m in a 

response role, so you could be 

at any incident, any day of the 

week, we maintain an on call 

roster to back up our volunteers. 

What was the last big incident 

you went to? 

There’s numerous, scrub 

fires, anything more than four 

fire trucks (responding at any 

one time) or three volunteer 

fire brigades working together, 

I get notified. It’s part of my 

function as commander. But 

if there’s a house fire reported, 

we’re expected to go . . . fatalities, 

anything like that, it’s for the 

welfare of our people too. And 

if there’s a messy motor vehicle 

accident, then I go. 

Have you had any major 

incidents this year yet? 

No, it’s been very quiet, it’s 

very good, the rain has helped 

us. 

What are some of the biggest 

incidents you have been to over 

the years? 

Pike River, Christchurch 

earthquake, Kaikoura 

earthquake, Port Hills. I flew 

to Japan for the tsunami after 

the Christchurch earthquake 

(as part of the New Zealand 

response). We responded to 

the Christchurch earthquake, 

and we were the only team ever 

to deploy to our own disaster 

and then deploy to another 

disaster, so we did 20 days in 

Christchurch and then went to 

Japan for 10 days. 

VERSATILE: Berry, as USAR hazmat officer, contended with 

wide levels of destruction, along with ice and snow, for the 

Japanese tsunami rescue response. 

What did your response in 

Japan involve? 

Search and rescue, well 

basically search and recovery, by 

that stage there were no rescues 

to be done. It would have been 

probably two days (after the 

tsunami when we arrived). It 

was an eye opener, because the 

damage that they (tsunamis) can 

do. So when we got there, it was 

quite destructive. We moved 

from Christchurch in February, 

and went to Japan where it 

was minus 17 deg C, snow and 

ice. I was hazmat (hazardous 

materials) officer at USAR at the 

time. I went over as the hazmat 

officer, because of the concern 

around radiation, monitoring for 

nuclear fallout and all that sort 

of stuff. 

That sounds crazy, being at 

something so destructive as the 

earthquake and then something

Can you describe what that was 

like? 

You have your family back 

home. We had to make sure they 

were going all good before we 

left. There was aftershocks and 

everything here in Christchurch 

as we were leaving, so we were 

still concerned for them. We put 

in some big hours, so it was quite 

exhausting. 

Was the Christchurch 

earthquake experience 

similar to that of being in 

Japan? 

I was off duty (in my role at 

the time that was senior station 

officer at Christchurch metro 

brigade). I went in as the USAR 

hazmat officer, but I ended up at 

the CTV building, about three 

o’clock that afternoon, so we 

were doing full-on rescues, and 

we rescued eight people.

That must have been a good 

feeling, to have been able to 

retrieve people who were alive 

from the rubble? 

Yes, and one of them, was the 

last person we got out alive of 

CTV. I oversaw the amputation 

of his leg to get him out, (it was) 

in consultation with ambulance, 

paramedics, and we got a doctor 

to do it. 

How do you describe having 

to make a decision like that. 

Was that one of the most 

challenging moments of your 

career? 

No, it was pretty simple when 

you saw that was the only way he 

was going to get out. 

And that had a really happy 

ending in that he survived. 

Yes, and he went back to his 

home in Japan. 

What are your reflections on 

the earthquake as we come up to 

10 years since it happened? 

A good group of us always 

go to the memorial services (on 

February 22) every year, family 

ceremony in the morning. We are 

invited to as USAR team leaders, 

we have done it for the last nine 

years (and will do the same 

this year). There’s been quite a 

few memories, we certainly did 

everything we could, I believe, 

and there are eight people 

walking around today who 

wouldn’t be. 

How long ago did you join the 

fire service? 

Years ago. I was a 23-year-old, 

I joined up in Matamata as a 

volunteer, did that for about six 

months, then joined Tauranga as 

a career firefighter, did that for 

three years, then transferred to 

Christchurch. A, because it was 

my home town and, B, because 

being a metropolitan brigade it 

was busier. And I’ve just come 

through the ranks and gone from 

firefighter to training officer, up 

to senior station officer, which 

is the highest operation rank, 

and assistant area commander 

and area commander. A lot of 

my career has been involved in 

training. I have come through 

the ranks, went through as 

a training officer, and lucky 

‘Famous for their roasts!’

down to Antarctica three times,

a partner now. I have lived in 

Lincoln for about six years. I like 

to relax and play golf. Also we’ve 

got a couple of syndicates that 

own a thoroughbred horse . . . it’s 

been just for fun. At the moment 

we have just started a new one up, 

I like the social side of it, getting 

together, watching the horse, 

and when it looks like you are 

running through and winning. 

What is your golf handicap? 

At the moment it’s about 20, it’s 

always stayed around there.

it?

merging of rural and urban 

brigades under way had any 

effect on your role? 

The merger is still ongoing 

now. At the moment there is the 

Canterbury area (my role) and 

the metro area (Christchurch 

metro role held by Dave 

Stackhouse).There’s two area 

commanders, so under the new 

change that’s going to become 

one district, there will be one 

district manager, so my job 

and his job are affected (they 

will merge). So we will have to 

reapply for that job. The district 

manager will have metro and 

Canterbury and he will also be 

in charge of the rural brigades 

that are out there too. The district 

manager will look after the whole 

area (Kaikoura to Dunsandel 

including Christchurch Metro) 

and then there will be some

together. 

Will you be applying for that 

role? 

Yes, it’s been advertised, so we 

are waiting for the process to go 

through. 

Good luck, I hope you get it. 

How will you feel if you don’t? 

There will be a job, it’s not as 

though I am going to lose the job. 

It could be a group manager, or 

the same level somewhere else. 

What have been some of the 

developments in recent years? 

In 2019 I got invited to Italy, 

they had a conference with 

USAR United Nations, after 

the Genoa bridge collapse, so 

they flew me over to Italy to talk 

about the earthquake. After the 

Christchurch earthquake we got 

classified by the United Nations, 

so we can deploy at short notice 

anywhere in the world, and be 

self sufficient for 15 days so we 

are not a burden on the country. 

We have a drone team within 

USAR, used for search and 

MEDI-PEDI 

rescue and building assessments 

and all that sort of stuff, and 

hot-spotting for fires. Sitting in 

my Rolleston office in USAR we 

have 14-tonne of equipment that 

can be deployed, heavy rescue 

gear, hygiene, habitat, specialist 

equipment of search cameras. 

You must be dealing with 

some traumatic situations 

with events such as 

earthquakes, as well as major 

car crashes. What sort of 

support systems are there for 

personnel such as yourself and 

how do you cope? 

That’s why I normally go, to 

make sure the team are alright, 

and we offer them counselling 

and support, that’s part of 

the role. Then we bring in 

counsellors. What we are doing 

now is registering what crews 

go to what accidents or fatals, 

and after a certain period we go 

to talk to them and see if they 

need counseling or anything 

like that. That (new system) is 

happening now for career staff 

and we are now moving that out. 

(For myself) the partner wears a 

wee bit of it. I have a chat to her, 

and there’s a group of us (at work 

to talk to as well, including) the 

assistant area commander Mike 

Johns. 

You look like one of those 

tough cookies who could handle 

anything, although it must be 

good that FENZ have that sort 

of system? 

Yes. We have a memorandum 

of understanding with 

ambulance to co-respond, we 

have had some very traumatic 

(incidents) that volunteers go to. 

They joined to fight fires, and 

all of a sudden (about two years 

ago) they have been thrown into 

this medical role. Some brigades 

are first responders, others are 

co-responders. Rolleston is a 

first responder, they are the first 

called out. We go to worst case 

scenarios, we don’t go to patch 

them up and be nice and have a 

good result. We are always going 

to a cardiac arrest and that sort of 

thing, it takes a toll on the people 

too. It’s been a big learning curve 

for them really.

Nafatali said it is good the 

hospital has some parking options 

but: “I wouldn’t pay those 

exorbitant prices. 

“People who need hospital 

treatment are elderly, they don’t 

have the finances to do that. 

“If you look at the people who 

come here, they’re from lower 

socio-economic backgrounds,” 

he said. 

Shirley McKenzie had also 

parked on Riccarton Ave and 

was unsure if the person she 

was picking up from hospital 

would be able to make it to her 

car. 

“I wouldn’t pay that money. It 

[the car park] is always full. 

“I consider the parking situation 

to be impossible around the 

hospital. 

“It’s a huge concern. It’s 

difficult for people who are 

under stress in an emergency,” 

McKenzie said. 

Canterbury District Health 

Board executive lead for facilities 

management Rob Ojala said 

those who park without paying 

in the Waipapa building car park 

will be fined and issued with an 

infringement notice. He did not 

say how much this fine is. 

If it is an emergency and 

people do not have time to 

pay for parking, Ojala said the 

CDHB is able to clear fines on a 

case by case basis. 

CDHB board member and 

city councillor Aaron Keown 

said he and others on the board 

were not told the cost of parking 

would be and it seems like pricegouging. 

He believes it should be free to 

park in the new car park. 

“That parking space is a complete 

fail. It should have been a 

multi-storey parking building 

right on site that is extremely 

accessible to the hospital. That 

should’ve been what happened.” 

Keown said it almost seems 

as if the DHB’s trying to put off 

people driving to the hospital. 

“Making parking this 

expensive for the close parking 

just means that some people 

cannot afford it and often those 

are the people who are using the 

hospital a lot.”

West Melton Community Park 

skate area opens 

The first stage of the new West Melton Community Park was officially opened last week. 

Mayor Sam Broughton and Councillor Nicole Reid were at the park on Friday, to officially open the 

skate area. 

“It was great to see so many young people on scooters, bikes and boards out in the sun and 

using the park. It’s good to have places like this where we can get out and be active and outdoors. 

I’m looking forward to coming back and enjoying the rest of the park when it’s finished,” Mayor 

Broughton said. 

The skate area includes a bowl, ramps, ledges and a pump track designed for learners and less 

experienced or younger riders. 

The majority of the area was completed and open to the public before Christmas, with a small 

section remaining to be finished off in the new year before the park could be officially opened. 

The skating area has been opened in time for the West Melton Skate Jam and Picnic in the Park, 

which will be happening at the park next Thursday 4 February from 3.30pm. 

West Melton Community Park will also include a new playground, sheltered barbecue area, and 

half-court basketball court, which will be built in the new year. Together the Community Park and 

landscaping developments have been designed to create a space for the whole community to enjoy. 

Feedback sought on proposed future housing 

developments in Rolleston 

Environment Canterbury is considering changing its rules to free up more land to build houses in Selwyn. 

Land rezoning for new housing developments in Rolleston, Rangiora and Kaiapoi is being considered to 

meet future demand, as part of a public consultation. 

Forecasts for growth have found that capacity for housing development in Selwyn and Waimakariri 

districts may not be enough to meet demand over the medium and long term (10 to 30 years). 

To address this scenario, Environment Canterbury has proposed a change to the Canterbury Regional 

Policy Statement (CRPS) that will enable councils to develop plans and consult with communities on 

additional land for housing, through their district planning processes. 

This targeted change identifies future development areas for urban housing in Rolleston, Rangiora and 

Kaiapoi, and provides guidance for councils when re-zoning land. 

The proposed change was notified on January 16 as part of a streamlined planning process, allowing 

the public to have their say by submitting a written comment. 

Katherine Trought, Environment Canterbury director strategy and 

planning, said the month-long submission process gives everyone 

an opportunity to look at the proposed change and have their say 

about the future of housing development in greater Christchurch. 

“Once the submission period is over, we will carefully consider all 

the comments we receive and deliver a report to the Minister for 

the Environment that will show how the submissions have been 

considered and any recommended changes.”

centre goes high tech 

A high-tech interactive sports wall will add some digital fun for 

people getting active at the Selwyn Sports Centre. 

The Axtion Fitness Tech sports wall uses Lü interactive sports 

technology to project immersive, interactive video games onto the 

sports centre wall. 

The equipment for the high-tech wall has been installed at the 

Selwyn Sports Centre, ahead of its opening for the 2021 winter 

sports season. 

Selwyn Sports Centre builders Apollo Projects Ltd said it believes 

the wall is the first of its kind to be installed in New Zealand. 

The wall will add another dimension to the activities that can be 

played, offering a different attraction to traditional sports and a new 

element of fun for users of all ages, Selwyn Sports Centre Manager 

Dave Tippett says. 

“It’s a really cool piece of tech for Selwyn that puts us at the cutting 

edge. It brings together gaming technology and sport and fitness 

in a really fun way that we think people of all ages will enjoy, but 

especially younger people.” 

The games can be played individually, in teams, or against another 

opponent, and range from mathematics and geography puzzles to 

hit the target contests. 

Mr Tippett says the exact details are still under discussion, but there 

will likely be a small charge to use the sports wall, in order to cover 

the licence fee for the games. The Selwyn Sports Centre is also 

looking into options for people to hire the use of the wall for birthday 

parties and events. 

The indoor court centre at Foster Park will feature eight sports 

courts, an upstairs indoor walking track, community spaces and 

administration areas.

On the Roads 

Hoskyns Road will be closed at the intersection with State Highway 73 until 28 February 

while Waka Kotahi NZTA carries out intersection safety improvements. A detour via Sandy 

Knolls Road is in place. 

Waka Kotahi NZTA has also advised that over the next two weeks Weedons Ross Road will be one-way, 

and only open to eastbound traffic between Jones Road and Manion Road. Jones Road will be closed 

to westbound traffic at the Weedons Ross Road/Manion Road intersection. Access to and from Manion 

Road will be maintained. 

A one-way system will also be in place to the east of the Weedons Road Interchange roundabout night 

from 7pm-6am until Monday 1 February. The road will reopen to two way traffic during the day, 

Station Street, Leeston, will be closed to right turning traffic entering or exiting Leeston Road for two 

weeks from Wednesday 27 January. A detour is in place via Cunningham Street. 

Night works will be taking place to resurface Jones Road between Hoskyns Road and Two Chain Road 

from Monday 8 – Friday 12 February. Traffic management will be in place. 

Pavement repairs are taking place on Leeston Road, Ellesmere Road, Ellesmere Junction Road, Levi

small Lincoln section. 

One of the large moths 

(approximately 25mm 

long) coming to our window 

from September to 

March was the bog porina 

moth Wiseana umbraculatus. 

The species is endemic to 

New Zealand and is found 

throughout the three main 

islands, but is usually observed 

in areas with wetter 

soils. 

Female moths have a 

wingspan of 49 to 66mm, 

while male moths range 38 

to 50mm. 

Wings are pale in colour 

with a brownish tinge 

and have a single white 

and dark stripe on the 

forewing. 

Female porina moths 

only live for about three 

to four days but can lay 

between 450 and 1700 

creamy white eggs that 

turn black after a few 

hours. Mature porina 

larvae can reach 75mm 

long, are greyish-yellow 

in colour and have a dark 

brown head capsule. 

Larvae feed on leaf 

material and crowns of 

several grass species and 

can be a major pest of 

lawns and pasture.

Hatch Early Learning Centre is a beautiful modern and

At Paradise for Little Angels in Rolleston 

it’s all about quality care and education, 

where tamariki are free to run, have fun,

Last year Paradise owners Marianna and 

Michael Inch were excited to receive on 

behalf of Te Taumutu Runanga, a Maori 

name: ‘Puanga Kakaho’ which means the 

blooms of the Toetoe.

Paradise’s journey has been rewarded, 

“says Marianna. “The whakatauki that 

came with our name is ‘Ki te Kotahi te

Rest cooked meat before serving 

There are very good 

reasons for leaving meat 

to rest. In the cooking 

process, the proteins in 

meat set, meaning that 

the juices all go to the 

middle and the outer 

part effectively dries 

out. When you rest the 

meat it cools just enough 

for those juices to be 

redistributed and the 

outside becomes moist 

and tender again. For a 

200gm piece of steak, 

rest it for six to 10min. 

Leave it uncovered in 

a warm part of the 

kitchen, perhaps over a 

stovetop. Larger pieces, 

such as roasts, rest for up 

to 30min covered with 

tinfoil 

Grilled beef porterhouse 

steak with mustard 

mayonnaise and broccoli 

salad 

– Serves 4 

Ingredients 

800gm porterhouse steak - four 

x 200gm pieces 

1 to drizzle vegetable oil 

1 to taste salt and freshly ground 

black pepper 

3 tsp Dijon mustard 

4 tbsp mayonnaise 

broccoli, almond and tomato 

salad 

1 broccoli 

2 tomatoes 

1 clove garlic 

2 tbsp tarragon 

2 tbsp chives 

3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 

3 tbsp lemon juice 

50gm slivered almonds 

1 to taste salt and freshly ground 

black pepper 

Directions 

Heat a grill, ridged grill-pan or 

frying pan. Use a sharp knife to 

make several cuts through the fat 

and slightly into the meat as this 

will stop it curling as it cooks. 

Lightly oil the steaks before 

putting them onto the heat. For 

juicy and medium rare steaks, 

cook them for about 7min per 

side, turning once and seasoning 

with salt and pepper once you 

have done so. 

Remove from the heat, wrap 

loosely in foil and leave them to 

rest for 5min. 

Mix the mustard and mayonnaise, 

then spread across the 

upper side of the meat. 

Salad: Cook the broccoli in 

boiling salted water for about 

4min, then drain and set aside in 

a warm bowl. 

Chop and seed the tomatoes, 

then add to the broccoli. Chop 

the garlic and tarragon finely, 

then chop the chives into 2cm 

lengths. 

Mix the herbs with the oil, 

lemon juice and almonds, then 

gently toss through the broccoli 

and season with salt and pepper. 

Serve warm. 

Roast chicken with green 

olives and lemons 

– Serves 4 

Ingredients 

1 tbsp olive oil 

4 chicken legs, whole 

½ tsp cinnamon 

½ tsp turmeric 

1 tbsp liquid honey 

1½ cups chicken stock 

2 lemons, thinly sliced 

3 bay leaves 

1 cup green olives 

Directions 

Heat oven to 190 deg C. Separate 

the chicken legs into drumsticks 

and thighs. 

Rub the pieces all over with 

olive oil, then with cinnamon 

and turmeric and season well 

with salt and pepper. 

Place the chicken in an oven 

pan and drizzle with liquid 

honey. Arrange the lemon slices 

over the chicken pieces. 

Surround the chicken pieces 

with the chicken stock, bay 

leaves and olives. Cover with foil 

and bake for 40min. 

Remove covering and bake 

for a further 40min until the 

chicken is golden brown and 

cooked through. 

Test by putting a sharp knife 

into the thickest part of the thigh 

to the bone – if the juices run 

clear, then the chicken is cooked.

It is crucial that responsible pet owners

visible gum line where you can’t see it. It

IN OUR NEED to believe that 

the weather in New Zealand 

is near-perfect – many of us 

seem to have made a conscious 

decision to live outdoors. 

We don’t want simply to wander 

about in our gardens – we 

want to eat, entertain, shower 

and even sleep in them as well. 

That being the case, gardens 

need much more structure than 

they’ve ever had before, to give 

us a sense of security and enclosure, 

and one of the easiest ways 

of adding this is with a pergola. 

Anyone can do it with a few 

bits of wood and a hammer. If 

you don’t have a hammer, you 

can buy a simple, ready-made 

pergola from the hardware store, 

or a flash, stylish one from a 

design shop. 

A pergola can either be a 

garden element in its own right, 

in which case the design will be 

paramount, or simply a support 

for climbing plants, making the 

look of the underlying structure 

less important. 

Wood is probably the easiest 

material to use if you’re doing it 

yourself, and the type you choose 

will be determined by how long 

you’d like your structure to last. 

If you don’t want it to rot, choose 

something like cedar, which will 

weather well and hang in there 

for the long haul. 

If you prefer a casual, rustic 

look and don’t much care 

whether it’ll still be there in 10 

years’ time, you can make it out 

of branches that have fallen from 

trees, bound with twine. 

For longevity, metal pergolas 

are winners. Naked pergolas 

can be nice, but most look better 

with something growing up 

them. 

Roses and wisteria are obvious 

choices and it’s hard to imagine 

anything as appealing, but there 

are numerous climbers which 

will provide shade and make a 

beautiful display. 


Plumbago auriculata has clusters 

of powder-blue flowers that 

will cover it during summer. It 

likes decent soil, regular watering 

and lots of sun, and can be 

hardpruned in winter or spring, 

The wonga wonga vine (Pandorea 

pandorana), will easily 

smother your pergola, even if it’s 

10m high. In spring it’s covered 

in small, creamy flowers. If 

you’re a real Kiwi, Tecomanthe 

speciosa will have to be on your 

wish list. This native needs a 

stout pergola for support. It has 

glossy, green leaves and clusters 

of creamy, tubular flowers in 

spring. 

Give it rich, moist soil and 

shaded roots. It has a pink rellie 

called Tecomanthe venusta 

which likes a warmer climate. 

Mandevilla splendens is a native 

of Brazil and has extraordinary, 

deep pink flowers. Mandevilla 

laxa is a hardier version, with 

clusters of fragrant, creamy white 

flowers. Mandevilla sanderi `Rosea’ 

is successful in a container 

and will grow in a conservatory

SELWYN ATHLETES enjoyed 

a hugely successful weekend at 

the South Island Colgate Games 

athletics meeting in Nelson, 

returning with a 33-medal haul 

and a bunch of personal bests. 

A bumper team of 51 athletes 

from the Selwyn Athletics Club 

attended the three-day meet at 

Nelson’s Saxton Field, making it 

one of the largest club turnouts 

from the South Island for the 

43rd annual Colgate Games. 

Just 11 fewer athletes made the 

trek to Nelson compared to the 

62-strong team that attended 

the games on ‘home’ turf at 

Christchurch’s Nga Puna Wai in 

2020, which bodes well for the 

growth of the club that is based 

at Brookside Park in Rolleston. 

There were 33 medals won – 

24 individual and seven relay 

medals – the latter highlighting 

Selwyn’s strong team spirit and 

well-drilled coaching. 

The team also recorded more 

than 80 personal bests across the 

premier three-day event for seven 

to 14-year-old athletes, which 

was attended by more than 900 

athletes, including about 200 

from the North Island. 

“It was a fantastic weekend 

with great conditions apart 

from a wet Sunday morning, 

outstanding performances and 

sportsmanship was shown by the 

Selwyn athletes and we are very 

proud of them all for representing 

the club and province so 

well,” club president Gail Krsinic 

said.

WEEDONS squeaked a thrilling 

one-wicket win over rivals 

Lincoln in the latest round of 

country cricket on Saturday. 

There were also hard-earned 

victories for Darfield and Ohoka 

while Sefton thumped a depleted 

Leeston-Southbridge to consolidate 

their lead at the top of the 

CRV Ambreed Country Premier 

One Day 2020/21 competition. 

Lincoln won the toss and 

elected to bat on their home 

domain but were soon ruing the 

decision when Arnav Deb struck 

with his second ball. 

They were then in all sorts of 

trouble at 34/6, with Dev, the 

competition’s top wicket-taker 

with 28, claimed his second fivewicket 

bag of the season. 

A battling unbeaten 36 from 

86 balls from Hugh Paterson 

helped Lincoln to post 108 before 

they were bowled out in the 

42nd over. 

But the tiny total proved a real 

challenge for Weedons, losing 

wickets throughout their chase. 

Akshan and Akshay Gulati 

bowled tightly to combine for 

four wickets, while Edgar Paterson 

chipped out three more, and 

when Weedons’ ninth wicket 

fell they still needed 11 runs for 

victory. 

The cool head of Charlie Robson, 

however, steered Weedons 

home, with an unbeaten knock 

of 22 off 43 balls to claim the win

ONE OF California’s all-time 

sprintcar greats Jonathon 

Allard is a surprise entry for 

the upcoming Gold Cup race 

that will be held at Ruapuna 

Speedway over Waitangi 

weekend. 

Allard’s wife is from Auckland 

and the family split their time 

between New Zealand and the 

US. But with Covid restrictions 

in place, he has remained in 

New Zealand for the past year. 

His intentions were originally 

just to race to race at Auckland 

and Tauranga. However, the 

lucrative Gold Cup race has 

tempted Allard and his team to 

travel south, in a bid to regain 

the event that he won in 2017. 

Allard is a three-time winner 

of the famed King of the 

West Series that is contested in 

Northern California, which is 

one of the hot-beds of American 

sprintcar racing. 

He has made two previous 

visits to Ruapuna, winning 

the 2017 Gold Cup, while in a 

previous ‘trip south’ he finished 

second in the New Zealand 

Sprintcar Championship. In 

recent times he has also travelled 

to Christchurch to assist the 

Duff Motorsport team. 

Organisers are ‘over the moon’ 

at having also enticed a number 

of top North Island drivers south 

for the two nights of racing with 

former national champions 

Dean Brindle (Hamilton), Jamie 

Larsen (Palmerston North) and 

Jamie McDonald (Auckland 

being joined by veteran Skinny 

Colson (Tauranga) and young 

Wellingtonian Stephen Taylor. 

The South Island charge is

Webb’s TQ campaign got off 

to a bad start when he failed to 

finish his first heat. 

He recovered and with two 

laps to go in the final, Webb 

made a decisive move into third 

place, however, a caution light 

was displayed for a slowing car, 

nullifying the move. 

He was restarted in fourth 

place, which is where he finished 

behind the Auckland trio 

of Kaleb Currie, Troy Pennington 

and Aaron Humble. 

In the midget car event Webb 

finished second to Jack Low 

with Southbridge driver Tom 

Lumsden third.

MY PRIDE AND JOY 

An eclectic collection 

Ever since he can remember Malcolm 

McGibbon has had an interest in cars and 

motorbikes. As a young lad, he would sit 

in the back seat of the car and identify the 

cars passing by, as most young boys do. 

With motorbikes being more affordable, 

Malcolm has had some form of motorbike 

to ride, including competitive racing, 

since he was 12. He built up a collection 

of vintage and veteran motorcycles, which 

he has slowly sold off to make way for a 

growing car collection. 

“After a certain time, wives start to 

demand a certain level of comfort,” he 

jokes. 

The first car to join Malcolm’s current 

eclectic collection was a fire-red 1959 

Mercedes. It’s a two-door soft-top that 

Malcolm reports cruises along very nicely. 

A sleek black 1948 Jaguar in the corner 

is possibly Malcolm’s favourite. He bought 

it down from the North Island about four 

years ago. “It had been restored in the 

1980s but had been allowed to deteriorate. 

It was pretty scruffy when we got it,” says 

Malcolm, although you wouldn’t know 

that to look at it now. 

Tucked away in Malcolm’s garage, on the 

outskirts of Darfield, you will also find a 

2000 Honda Insight, the first of the hybrid 

cars to come onto the market. It is parked 

in front of a 1916 Ford Model T Speedster, 

which he says is very popular with vintage 

car club people because parts are so easily 

available. 

Malcolm is also the proud owner of a 

1915 Swift. One of two remaining threelitre 

Swifts in the world; the other is in the 

UK. 

“These cars were built before WW1. 

During the war the factory stopped 

production to assist with the war effort. 

Then after the war, most people were 

unable to afford larger 3-litre cars, so 

production never resumed,” explains 

Malcolm. He did a reasonable amount of 

work on the Swift to make it easier to use. 

Another contender for favourite car in 

Malcolm’s collection is a 1914 Renault 

known as Louis. It has a three-speed 

gearbox and a top speed of about 40km/h. 

Louis was initially restored over 25 

years by the previous owner who lived in 

Timaru. Wanting to find out more about 

the car, the owner ran a notice in the 

Otago Daily Times with a photo. By luck, 

a former driver of the car – a Mr Norman 

Woods from Oamaru – saw the notice and 

supplied a lot of fascinating history about 

Louis. 

This includes an accident involving a 

black cow at night. The acetylene lamps 

required water poured over cubes of 

carbine to form a gas that had to be 

ignited and were notoriously difficult to 

use. Mr Woods had only lit the kerosene 

lamps and, as a result, didn’t see the cow. 

“Nothing was easy in those days,” says 

Malcolm, who feels the history adds 

further appreciation to the car.

Toyota Hilux a ute for all the team 

DURING THE summer months 

my weekends start quite busy. 

You see, I’m the coach of a team 

of young cricketers, and watching 

the 11 and 12-year-olds playing 

sport and enjoying themselves is 

something I’m very passionate 

about. 

It’s not always easy for the 

parents to be transporting their 

children to the games, and I’m 

often picking up or dropping off 

as circumstances dictate. Just 

recently I had three boys to pick 

up – and all of their kit, along 

with my gear bag. Thankfully, I 

was driving a double-cab Toyota 

Hilux pick-up, the rear deck area 

was well utilised and with four-up 

inside we were all comfortable, 

there’s as much space in a doublecab 

ute as there is any modern 

mainstream car. 

There’s a new Hilux in dealers’ 

showrooms now and it has had 

a fairly hefty makeover for 2021, 

notably more power under the 

bonnet, better economy, and a 

heap of cosmetic changes that 

continue to give the ute buyer 

more of a traditional driving 

experience. 

The latest to come my way was 

the range-topping SR5 Cruiser. 

Hilux buyers of the past will relate 

to the high-grade interior of the 

SR5; the Cruiser adds even more 

spec, it is high on fitment. Major 

items to note are keyless entry 

and ignition, satellite navigation 

(8in touch screen), full leather 

trim with heated front seats, 

electrically adjustable front seats 

and superb JBL audio. There’s 

also a lot of cosmetic detail in the 

Cruiser variant, there are piano 

black trim details, charcoal and 

matte black exterior trim items 

and, of course, Cruiser graphics. 

That’s a package that will lure 

those who like their utes to stand 

out in a crowd, it’s not overly 

invasive visually but it will draw 

attention, the test car was painted 

black as well, and it showed real 

presence. 

A lot of the latter goes to down 

to the big wheels, at 18in they are 

an inch in diameter bigger than 

its SR5 stablemate, and that also 

has grip advantages. 

All SR5 models are four-wheeldrive 

capable, in-cabin switch 

gear gives you a multitude of 

options if or when you do leave a 

sealed surface. 

During my testing time I left 

the highway just for a short burst 

alongside the Waimakariri River, 

there’s a nice track that runs 

parallel for several kilometres, 

but caution and awareness are the 

key ingredients for many motorcyclists 

fulfil their recreational 

needs on those tracks.

elevation is presented. 

Just like the multitude of pickups 

in this part of the market, the 

Hilux gets a leaf spring-located 

live rear axle. While this may 

seem primitive it is by far the best 

suspension for a load-bearing 

model. It works pretty well, there 

is a major articulation on uneven 

ground and that gives the best 

possible chance of keeping wheel 

contact to the ground. 

At city speeds the big Dunlop 

Grandtrek tyres (265/60) soak 

up the bumps and ruts, and 

there are still plenty of those in 

Christchurch, there is a little 

jiggle over the worst of it but, 

by and large, the suspension is 

supple and absorbent and that’s a 

combination hard to get right in 

a model that is also destined for a 

working role. 

On that subject, the payload 

capacity of the SR5 cruiser is 

940kg, and like all Hilux models 

will haul up to 3500kg on the 

towbar. 

Taking care of the load is

turbocharged diesel engine, 

power is now up to 150kW from 

130kW and, more importantly, 

torque has been boosted to 

500Nm from 420Nm, increases 

of 15 per cent and 11 per cent 

respectively and, what’s more, 

the torque pattern has been 

broadened providing much 

greater mid-range response and

automatic transmission, 

the engine feels willing and 

comfortable, it doesn’t throb 

unnecessarily, and even when 

hauling to the red line it is well 

boosted without turbo lag. 

Not only has Toyota got the 

engine to work with a broader 

power spread, it is also far more 

fuel efficient, by 11 per cent to 

exact. 

The 2755cc unit is now rated 

with a combined cycle average 

of 7.9l/100km compared to 

9l/100km of the previous model. 

By my calculations, over time 

that would lead to considerable 

savings if you are a user who 

spends much time on a daily 

basis behind the wheel. 

When I took the Cruiser back 

to the dealership the fuel usage 

readout was sitting at 8.9l/100km, 

which wasn’t that far distant to 

Toyota’s claims, and was good 

given that I spent a lot of distance 

travelling and commuting at city 

speeds. On the highway you can 

expect a 7l/100km instantaneous 

reading with the engine loping 

over casually at just 1800rpm. 

At highway speed the Hilux 

cruises gently and isn’t a handful 

when the long straights run 

out. On 18in wheels there is 

considerable steering feel, and 

that’s a hard thing to get right 

when there’s a host of rugged 

mechanical elements sitting 

underneath. 

Composure in a corner is 

acceptable and stability at the 

rear end is enhanced due to a 

comprehensive traction control 

system. 

Toyota has never sat back and 

let sales take care of themselves. 

As a company it is constantly 

refining and further developing 

product. The Hilux is a classic 

example of that, and while 

it gets the benefits of further 

specification enhancements, 

it has also had the mechanical 

upgrades that will keep it as one 

of the Kiwi favourites in the pickup 

market. 

With 17 models to choose 

from there’s a truck for all 

requirements, the SR5 Cruiser 

tempting the discerning buyer, 

one who likes just a little bit more 

in a ute without going to hyper, 

although I’m sure with Toyota’s 

extensive aftermarket option 

packages that could be arranged.

Rolleston Industrial Developments Limited have lodged a private plan change request 

with the Council.

Clause 5 of the First Schedule, Resource Management Act 1991 

Plan change 66 (PC66) proposes to change the Operative Selwyn District Plan to rezone 

approximately 27.27 hectares located on the south side of Maddisons Road, Rolleston from 

Rural Inner Plains to Business 2A zone.

between zones, and are also an ideal way 

to camouflage ugly walls, create privacy 

and soften sharp angles. Living walls, an 

ever-increasingly popular vertical plant 

system, can be either freestanding to 

create different outdoor areas and can 

be on wheels to easily transform your 

outdoor space at a moment’s notice. Play 

with height and scale with various 

types of planters, whether you use 

hanging planters to draw the eye upwards, 

or oversized planter pots to add drama. 

Go with the flow 

Creating a great indoor/outdoor flow is 

easily created by opening up your kitchen 

with bifold doors or windows to create a 

servery or bar area for easy entertaining. 

If you are building your home from the 

ground up, you may want to design an 

outdoor room which lies at the epicentre 

of the building, with rooms opening onto 

the communal courtyard with bifold 

doors. 

Function over form 

Consider what you intend to use your 

outdoor space for. If you don’t plan on 

eating outside, there’s no need for a dining 

table, but buy some comfortable outdoor 

seating instead. If you only intend on 

sitting outdoors during the evening, 

then don’t waste money on awnings and 

umbrellas, and invest the money in an 

outdoor fireplace which you will actually 

use.
