only set of
teeth your dog
will ever have
It is crucial that responsible pet owners
are committed to keeping their dog’s teeth
and gums healthy and strong.
Most dental disease occurs below the
visible gum line where you can’t see it. It
is important to take your dog to the vet to
get their teeth cleaned at least once a year.
These visits also give your vet the chance
to do a thorough dental check; enabling
them to spot and respond to any issues
before they become big problems. Talk
with your vet about any dental products,
treats, dental specific diets, and home
brushing activities you are considering for
your pet.
It is also a good idea to brush your dog’s
teeth daily yourself. Ideally, start doing
this when they are a puppy to help them
get used to it. With patience and positive
reinforcement training, most dogs will
accept brushing.
Be vigilant! When your cleaning your
dog’s teeth or playing with them take note
whether some areas of their gums are
redder than others. Always use caution
when evaluating your pet’s mouth because
a pet in pain may bite.
Periodontal disease is an inflammatory
condition of the structures that surround
and support the teeth. Early detection
and treatment are critical. Advanced
periodontal disease can cause severe
problems and pain for your pet that can
impact your pet’s overall health including
kidney, liver and heart muscle changes.
problems are obvious, non-specific
signs such as irritability and behavioural
changes can also result from oral diseases.
If you observe any of the following signs
contact your veterinarian: bad breath,
reduced appetite, broken or loose teeth,
bleeding from the mouth, teeth that are
discoloured or covered in tartar, abnormal
chewing, drooling or dropping food
from the mouth or swelling in the areas
surrounding the mouth.
Regularly brushing your pet’s teeth
is the single most effective action you
can take to keep your pet’s teeth healthy
and prevent most of the common oral
diseases. Daily brushing is best, but not
always possible; brushing several times a
week can also be effective.
