OVER THE last few years
I have recorded as many as
95 species of moths at our
small Lincoln section.
One of the large moths
(approximately 25mm
long) coming to our window
from September to
March was the bog porina
moth Wiseana umbraculatus.
The species is endemic to
New Zealand and is found
throughout the three main
islands, but is usually observed
in areas with wetter
soils.
Female moths have a
wingspan of 49 to 66mm,
while male moths range 38
to 50mm.
Wings are pale in colour
with a brownish tinge
and have a single white
and dark stripe on the
forewing.
Female porina moths
only live for about three
to four days but can lay
between 450 and 1700
creamy white eggs that
turn black after a few
hours. Mature porina
larvae can reach 75mm
long, are greyish-yellow
in colour and have a dark
brown head capsule.
Larvae feed on leaf
material and crowns of
several grass species and
can be a major pest of
lawns and pasture.
