SELWYN ATHLETES enjoyed
a hugely successful weekend at
the South Island Colgate Games
athletics meeting in Nelson,
returning with a 33-medal haul
and a bunch of personal bests.
A bumper team of 51 athletes
from the Selwyn Athletics Club
attended the three-day meet at
Nelson’s Saxton Field, making it
one of the largest club turnouts
from the South Island for the
43rd annual Colgate Games.
Just 11 fewer athletes made the
trek to Nelson compared to the
62-strong team that attended
the games on ‘home’ turf at
Christchurch’s Nga Puna Wai in
2020, which bodes well for the
growth of the club that is based
at Brookside Park in Rolleston.
There were 33 medals won –
24 individual and seven relay
medals – the latter highlighting
Selwyn’s strong team spirit and
well-drilled coaching.
The team also recorded more
than 80 personal bests across the
premier three-day event for seven
to 14-year-old athletes, which
was attended by more than 900
athletes, including about 200
from the North Island.
“It was a fantastic weekend
with great conditions apart
from a wet Sunday morning,
outstanding performances and
sportsmanship was shown by the
Selwyn athletes and we are very
proud of them all for representing
the club and province so
well,” club president Gail Krsinic
said.

the 10-14 year age groups, and
several Selwyn athletes stood out
with multiple individual medals.
Keira O’Reilly starred in the
11-year-old girls, winning the
200m and getting silver in both
the 100m and long jump, while
Jody McCarthy-Dempsey was
equally as impressive in the
13-year-old girls, winning the
high jump and getting bronze
medals in the hurdles and long
jump.
Promising middle distance
runner Isabel Prescott returned
home with a couple of individual
medals – gold in the 10-year-old
girls 1500m and silver in the

800m – to go with a 4x100m
relay gold.
In the 13-year-old boys, middle
distance runner Cooper
Wightman (silver in the 1500m
and bronze in the 800m) and
Neihana Mata’afa (silver in shot
put and discus) enjoyed huge
success, adding gold in the
13-year-old mixed medley relay
and bronze in the 13-year-old
boys 4x100m relay for fourmedal
hauls.
Sprinters Judah Lodoviko
and Conner Woodcock also
enjoyed multiple successes in
the 10-year-old boys, Lodoviko
claiming silver in the long jump
Eli Craig
took silver in
the 11-yearold
boys
long jump.

the 200m.
The pair also combined with
Carter Bedford and Caleb Price
to win the 10-year-old boys
4x100m title for Selwyn, and
claim silver in the 10-year-old
mixed medley relay with Bella
Chapman, Freya Macdonald and
Jared Harris.
