With our big rivers primed from monsoonal rain, now is
the time to tackle big barramundi. Look for dropping
water levels up on the floodplains where streams flow
into the big rivers and creeks. These little run off points
are where barra will be waiting in ambush for bait
flowing inward and can return you loads of fish in a
session. Some points of interest to start, the top of
Nourlangie Creek on the South Alligator River, Clear
Creek, Charlies Creek, Browns Creek and Bamboo
Creek on The Daly, Beatrice Creek, Scotts Creek and
Manton Creeks on The Adelaide River. Don’t ignore any
little run-off looking waterfalls on the river banks either
as they are always worth a cast. Generally, this early in
the year requires small lures for this purpose, so be
armed with 65mm Squidgy Slick Rigs, 3inch Wedgies,
Reidys Rubbers, ZMan 3” Minnows, Samaki Vibes and
trust me…DOA Terroreyz!!

Big river junctions are good places to scan around and
locate bigger fish and up the size of your lures to match
the bait you may see in the area. I like the 5-6” Airgaps
for this job as they look just like our top end mullet.
Trolling the mouths of the big rivers produce some
monster metre-plus Barra this time of year. Of course,
Shady Camp’s Sampan and Tommy Cut Creeks will be
jam packed with keen anglers trolling big Bombers,
Killalure BarraBaits and Big Ass B52’s. The Finniss River
copped plenty of rain this year, so it will also be firing
on all cylinders with quality fish.
