JUNE/JULY 2023 3

MEET THE QUEEN OF
AUSTRALIAN MOTORSPORT
BETTY KLIMENKO AM
In the lead up to the Darwin V8’s,
we had the fortunate opportunity
to speak with the Queen of
Motorsport, Betty Klimenko AM,
about her incredible life and
unwavering love for all things
Australian, including V8 racing and
her relationship with the ADF!
PLEASE TELL US ABOUT YOUR
RELATIONSHIP WITH DEFENCE
I am an immensely proud and “tragic”
Australian with a strong sense of pride
for the ADF. We have a connection to
Puckapunyal through our motorsport
team and have been approved by the
ADF to use the RAA insignia on our
cars; I was super excited and did a little
happy dance when we were given
permission. We also employ Army
mechanics as part of our ADF
partnership and they learn so much
about cars and mechanics with us - I
love providing these opportunities.
We have a huge Aussie flag flying on our
farm that we struggle to raise every
morning and I am up at 3:30am for
ANZAC Day every year, just in case I
miss it. A few years ago, we were invited
to attend the ANZAC Day ceremony at
Puckapunyal, and we stayed at the
Officers Mess - we were up and ready
at the parade ground by 3:30am and no
one else had arrived yet [laughs]!
WHAT IS THE BEST ASPECT OF THE V8 SUPERCARS?
I love seeing things being developed and watching the team prepare to race
the final product. I get under the cars and have a look with my team, but I
can’t sit still with nerves when they start racing.
I also love the process of recruiting emerging young drivers into the team.
We once had an American 16-year-old racing for us, but he didn’t have a
road licence, he had a race licence, and he was exciting to watch!
WHAT ARE YOUR GREATEST CHALLENGES?
I was ready for the transition into V8 racing, but the politics was a challenge. It
was a steep learning curve as I wasn’t expecting personality challenges in a
sport - the ‘boys club’ still exists and I can’t spend time with fake people
anymore.
I have also been diagnosed with Myeloma (bone marrow cancer) and I may
end up in a wheelchair, but I am content with it and want to enjoy the
quietness of my country farm while I still can. After spending the last 23 years
in motorsport and decades building shopping centres in my early years, I
love the country life and it’s my place to unwind. Life is better on the farm - I
know where I want to be.
HOW DID IT FEEL TO BE THE FIRST FEMALE OWNED
TEAM TO WIN BATHURST 1000?
The day we won Bathurst, I wasn’t ready for it, and it was so
surreal. The media wanted to interview me immediately after
winning, but I really needed to find a toilet! I had to Army crawl
under a garage door to find a men's bathroom. During the
interview, I had dust all over me from crawling along the floor!
Instead of putting the trophy in the factory, we built a locked
cabinet and took it everywhere with us for people to see. It was so
great seeing people get excited over the trophy and one little boy
said; “this is my dream to see this cup!” I often sit with kids and
fans; we hug and take photos - I haven’t forgotten what it means
to these kids who love motorsport. We have a lot of fans in
wheelchairs who have various illnesses and it’s sometimes a dying
wish for them to meet us. During one race, I ushered a group of
fans into our shed to escape the rain and they couldn’t believe
their luck - they were astounded that I let them in!
4 The Top Ender | Tri-Services Magazine Incorporated

On another occasion, I had a 19-year-old propose to me
on the track when I was 58 years old - I had to gently
explain that it wouldn’t work, and my husband warned
that there were no returns after 3 months. My husband
is often asked to take photos of me with fans, which can
be hard for him at times, especially when they ask; “hey
dude, can you take our photo?.” I often remind fans that
the “dude” is my husband! I have received teddy bears,
handmade handbags, photo albums. I also know of fans
who have tattoos of me... In ‘normal’ life, your husband
would punch someone for that!
“I’m not an outdoor person but I love
sitting on the veranda on my rocking
horse, with my dogs and a shotgun
across my lap - I feel very badass...”
I’m still very human, but I am a cashed-up bogan who
buys $2 singlets. I prefer to be down to earth, and I buy
boxes of new discounted clothing, then donate the
clothing to charity so it will be handed to someone in
need. I love that I can support small business and local
community groups. We own a farm in country NSW
and there are still a few people who don’t know who I
am (which is refreshing). When I go to a local café for
the best burgers I have ever had, they have no idea who
I am, but they gave me a free cup holder once [laughs]! I
also sponsor the local football club, Raptor Rescue
Centre and have helped to fund local playgrounds on
top of their local fundraising. I have a soft spot for rescue
animals, but my husband has put some boundaries on
me now [laughs].
BEST ADVICE YOU HAVE RECEIVED?
Don’t ask anyone to do anything you have never done
yourself. If you have done it, you know it can be done.
Be willing to work as hard as you can... We all have
challenges (men and women), but some days you must
get up and go and take risks to move forward!
“Our race team was called Cactus,
then Smoking Angels, but then I
realised that Cactus was not a great
name and Smoking Angels was not
very professional, so we researched
online and found Erebus - it had to
have its own identity. Erebus means
the Greek God of Darkness.”
HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE AWARDED A MEMBER
OF THE ORDER OF AUSTRALIA?
That was quite an amazing experience. I received an email
saying that I had been nominated for an AM and I read it
three times wondering who would nominate me for an AM.
You are required to give an 8000-word essay as to why this
person should receive an AM and their life history, but my
team had nominated me with help from one of my sons. My
team of 20 people who work for me and give their blood,
sweat and tears for me, think I should be awarded! My AM
nomination was approved, and I was over the moon - I have
never been so humbled in all my life.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO WOMEN
TO MANAGE STRESS, BUSINESS, HOME/LIFE
BALANCE?
I was trained by my Hungarian father who thought that a
woman had to be at home and looking good at functions. He
was proud of me, but he didn’t really know how to see my
full potential. I have always been an incredibly determined
woman and I want to be a person who reflects on all the
amazing things I have experienced in my life, so the idea of
living with a white picket fence as a ‘housewife’ was not for
me. In our younger years, we were living off $19,000 per year,
but we somehow managed and came out as better people -
you treasure everything after hardship.
Being a working mother with sons, I learned to prioritise the
‘big things’ and 'little things.’ I look at little things quickly and
stop worrying about trivial things that won’t matter in 10
minutes. There will be times when you feel like you’ve been
hit by a bus, but you muster the strength to get out from
under the bus and keep going. Some troubles and arguments
aren’t worth the time or worry – the big picture is what truly
matters. If I ever argue with my husband, I ask if he is
JUNE/JULY 2023 5

hungry, and we have a lunch break during the argument
[laughs]. Humour is so important for a happy life and
arguing is a bomb that needs to be diffused before it
becomes a big issue. Why spoil your life and your good
karma by holding anger and resentment towards
someone else?
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE TO VISIT
OR THING TO DO IN THE TOP END WHEN
VISITING FOR THE V8’S?
I love Darwin - the people, atmosphere and the
quirkiness of the town; it’s laid back and friendly. I love
sitting at the Waterfront and finding the most interesting
restaurants in little alley ways. You can walk around
Darwin city and have a good laugh at the drunk people.
I hate the humidity and midges... I go through a lot of
insect spray!
I’m 63 now and wanting to take a step back. My sons
don’t want a part of it, but Erebus will be around for a
long time, and there will be a photo of me on the wall
after I have gone - I want to see it continue for future
generations.
EREBUS ARMY MECHANIC
I spent six years serving in the Reserves as a driver in
the RACT corps, then I transferred to full time Army
in 2016 as a vehicle mechanic (RAEME). After Initial
Employment Training, I was posted to 1CER Darwin
until the end of 2022. In Jan 2023, I was posted to
Erebus Motorsport as a mechanic.
HAVE YOU ALWAYS LOVED MOTORSPORT?
Yes, I have followed the Supercars and Superbikes since I was
young, which led me to start racing in Motorkhana as a hobby
in 2022 and I won Rookie of the Year.
WHAT IS THE PROCESS OF BECOMING AN
EREBUS MECHANIC THROUGH ARMY?
To get opportunities in the Army you need to work hard
and show that you are motivated - if you work hard, there
are lots of different opportunities and options available. I
received a group email about this opportunity, so I submitted
an application through my Chain of Command. Because I had
worked hard and shown that I was responsible, my Chain of
Command were happy to forward my application. Having
some experience in the motorsport industry helped but it
was not the main reason for getting this position.
WHAT SKILLS HAVE YOU ALREADY LEARNED
THAT YOU CAN APPLY TO YOUR MILITARY
CAREER?
This experience has taught me more about working under
pressure, especially on race weekends but also remembering
to stay focused and calm in this kind of environment. The skills
I am learning will continually develop and help in all aspects of
my military career.
I have also learned how to work in a different type of team
environment, which has similar values to the Army. This has
helped to develop my leadership skills and a better
understanding of working together as a team to achieve a
winning result.
The additional skills I have learned for mechanical and
fabrication work will help to enhance the ways I work with
Army equipment and I will be able to teach other Army
mechanics in the future.
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT
WORKING ALONGSIDE THE EREBUS TEAM?
It is great to get involved with the Gen 3 Supercars and
working with the Chevrolet Camaro.
I have loved seeing the overall management of a great
Supercar race team and the amount of product
development that goes into getting the cars ready to race.
It has been fun to get to know the team members and
learning different things from a number of experts in this
industry.
Although it has been a lot of hard work, it has been
rewarding to see the cars succeed on the racetrack,
which makes all the hard work worthwhile.
FROMELLES
AND POZIÈRES
On 19 July 1916 the Australians
attacked at Fromelles, with disastrous
results. The Australians suffered a
shocking 5,500 casualties – their
greatest losses in a single day. It was a
harsh lesson about the scale and
intensity of warfare on the Western
Front.
Four days later, Australians went into action on
the Somme, attacking and capturing Pozières.
Under heavy bombardment, casualties grew over
the next few weeks, eventually totalling 23,000.
Fighting continued on the Somme through the
autumn mud and a bitterly cold winter. Australian
casualties continued to mount, and the men’s
health deteriorated in the conditions.
"Today I lead my battalion in an assault on the
German lines and I pray God that I may come
through alright and bring honour to our name. If
not, I will at least have laid down my life for you
and my country, which is the greatest privilege
one can ask for. Farewell dear people, the hour
approacheth.!." - Major Geoffrey McCrae, 60th
Battalion, 19 July 1916
COMMEMORATING
THE KOREAN WAR
Only five years after the end of the
Second World War, Australia became
involved in the Korean War. Personnel
from the Royal Australian Navy (RAN),
Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), and
the Australian Regular Army (ARA)
were committed soon after the war
began and would serve for the next
three years in the defence of South
Korea.
In the pre-dawn hours of 25 June 1950 the
Korean People’s Army (KPA) launched a massive
offensive across the 38th Parallel into South
Korea. They drove the Republic of South Korea’s
(ROK) forces down the peninsula, capturing the
capital, Seoul, within a week. South Korean and
hastily deployed United States Army units fought
delaying actions as they were forced further
down the Korean peninsula, which allowed
defensive positions to be set up around the port
city of Pusan.
In all, 21 nations committed troops, ships, aircraft,
and medical units to the defence of South Korea.
Australia became the second nation, behind the
United States, to commit personnel from all
three armed services to the war.
On 28 June Prime Minister Robert Menzies
committed Australia’s RAN assets to the
Korean War, followed several days later by No.
77 Squadron. It wasn’t until 26 July that 3RAR
was committed to ground operations in Korea.
Thank you for your service
REMEMBERING
FREDERICK LESLIE SAYERS
A GREAT-GREAT GRANDCHILD'S RENDITION
“We are proud members of a family with a strong
defence history.
Our Grandmother and Grandfather served in the
Royal Australian Airforce.
Our Great Grandfathers served in WWII.
Our Great Grandmother was a nurse in WWII.
Our Great-Great Grandfather served in WWI and
II. His name was Frederick Leslie Sayers. He was
one of the first Indigenous light horsemen.
Fredrick was a Noongar man from Western
Australia. Along with his three brothers, he joined
the Australian Imperial forces at the start of WWI.
Too often a family history is lost as the generations with
stories to share slowly leave us. I had the pleasure of
attending the ANZAC Commemoration at Mother Teresa
Catholic Primary School and the honour of listening to
Koby & Emma McCormick speak of their family’s Defence
history, in particular the story of their Great-Great
Grandfather.
On the 26th of September 1915, Frederick landed at ANZAC Cove in
Gallipoli and was instantly fired upon. In his first week, he was digging
trenches and avoiding bullets - he only had 12 hours sleep.
Fredrick had many close escapes and fought until the 15th of December,
his 19th birthday, when his unit was evacuated. Fredrick was that sick
that his mates had to carry him to the boat.
After many years away, and the loss of one of his brothers, Fredrick
arrived home on the 4th of August 1919.
During WWII, Fredrick served in Australia and became a sergeant.
Fredrick was awarded the 1914-15 Star, the British War Medal 1914-
20 and the Victory Medal for his military service.
We are extremely proud of our Great-Great Grandfather, and of his
service to this country.
To keep his story alive, and that of indigenous soldiers, we would like
to present the school with two books about our great-great
grandfather.
SAM’S HEART IS RACING!
We caught up with Darwin racing Mum, Samantha
Hoskin to talk about her love of fast cars and
racing in the Top End!
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START RACING?
My dad has been my biggest inspiration - he races absolutely
anything with 4 wheels including Sprint Cars, HQ,
Commodore Cup, Go-Karts!
Racing has been in my family from long before I was born,
with dad beginning his need for speed on the water with
speed boats and water skiing. He is an adrenaline junky, and
being brought up around it, we didn’t stand a chance to not
be involved.
For many years, my brother and dad were racing together,
however Steven has since taken on the role of Crew Chief
for his kids racing in the speedway junior sedans category
and also bitumen Karts. So, the opportunity came for me to
take over the family legacy.
In the Supercar series, we race a combined category, which
includes Excels, HQ, Commodore Cups & Improved
Production, so usually a field of 40 cars. This is the only time
dad and I race together, and he gets great pleasure racing up
behind me in his brute V8, against me in the Excel... with half
the horsepower!
WHAT TYPE OF VEHICLE DO YOU RACE?
I have a 1996 Hyundai Excel, racing in the Circuit Excel
category, which is an Australia wide category.
WHAT ARE YOUR GREATEST CHALLENGES?
My greatest challenge is keeping Dad and my brother from
jumping in my chair. Any opportunity they get, they’re both
there trying to get in and take the Excel for a spin. As Dad
says, it’s the best thing to drive.
But in all seriousness, many think the challenge is being 1 of 3
women involved in circuit racing in Darwin. I would say that’s
the most rewarding part because once the helmet is on,
nobody cares what gender you are.
I just get out there, give it all I’ve got and come in knowing
that I’ve given it everything - having an amazing support
crew helps too.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT RACING?
I love the adrenaline rush it gives. Strapping in and knowing
you are in full control of your car and nothing else – it's such
a thrill.
Having 2 kids, a full-time job, being a president of a dance
club and a coach too, and everything else I fill my cup up
with, none of it matters when you’re on the track. It is such
an escape from reality, and all you have time to think about is
what gear you’re in, how you approach the corner, or who
you’re trying to get past.
WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE GOALS FOR RACING?
My goal is to keep showing that even a Mum can jump in a
race car and compete with the boys.
It is such an inclusive sport, and we are breaking barriers - I
love that as a Mum, sister, friend, work colleague and a
dance coach, I can be the Stig as well!
WHO IS YOUR RACING MENTOR /
INSPIRATION?
My inspiration would be Bryce Fullwood in the Middys
V8 Supercar series - it’s so cool that a Darwin boy has
made it to the big league! I was recently accepted into
the Napa Motorsports Know How academy and Bryce
is my online mentor; he has a wealth of knowledge that
we have used to better my race. He is such a down to
earth guy and so easy to chat with!
BEST ADVICE FOR SOMEONE WANTING TO
RACE?
Come on down, have a chat and give it a go - it is the
best decision you’ll ever make.
NT CUSTOM LASER ENGRAVING
We continue to connect you with the talented Veterans and
Spouses in our Creative Community Series.
WHAT LED YOU TO STARTING YOUR ENGRAVING
BUSINESS?
I was looking for a change after driving trucks for most of my working
life and was very interested in starting my own business but I didn’t
know what kind of business. With my wife Peta, we kicked a few ideas
around; hotdog stand, pool hall or coffee van... We also talked about laser
engraving and realised there wasn’t anyone on our side of town
providing that service, so with lots of online research, we decided to give
it a go. I have always had a creative side to me, and I have always enjoyed
designing things, so it made sense to start this type of business.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN RUNNING YOUR
BUSINESS?
We are only a new business and have only been operating for 6
months. We are amazed by how fast the business is growing - we
had no idea we would become this popular so fast!
WHAT DO YOU SELL AND WHO DO YOU SELL TO?
We offer custom laser engraving for many products, including.
cutting boards, coasters, keychains, Zippos, knives, frames,
awards, pens, signs, and one of my favourite things to create,
custom medal boxes for Veterans to display their service medals.
By far, our most popular item is the Yeti mugs - they fly off the
shelves here in Darwin!
BRIEFLY EXPLAIN YOUR MILITARY SERVICE
I joined the Army Reserves when I was 17 years old while I was
still at school doing my year 12. After I graduated in 1995, I joined
the Army full time. After all my basic training, I was posted to 4th
14 The Top Ender | Tri-Services Magazine Incorporated

Field Regiment as ECN 109 Driver where I was
posted for 6 years. In 2001, I posted to 1CSU in
Darwin, again as a Driver. I spent 2 years there and
then was posted to the School of Transport
(Victoria) as a Driving Instructor. I did 2 years at the
school before returning to Darwin with a posting to
2 Cav Regt. Whilst at 2 Cav, I deployed to Iraq as a
Bushmaster Commander with AMTG-1. The
following year, after 13 years in the Defence Force, I
left the Army to put down roots in Darwin.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO ENLIST INTO THE ARMY?
As a kid, I was always going to be a Soldier. I joined the Army Cadets
when I was 13 and continued all through High School until I joined
the Army Reserves when I was 17. At school, I couldn’t wait to
graduate so I could join the Army! So, it’s always been something I
wanted to do.
BEST SKILL THAT YOU LEARNED IN THE MILITARY
THAT YOU STILL USE TODAY?
Most likely my sense of urgency... I don’t like to mess around. I prefer
to ‘hook in’ and get the job done right. This has served me well in my
previous jobs since leaving defence, in my personal life, and now with
my business.
BEST LIFE/CAREER ADVICE YOU HAVE EVER RECEIVED?
Balance is so important in life. Always make time for yourself, your
family and friends - “all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.”
FAVOURITE MILITARY EXPERIENCE?
My greatest military experience would be deploying to Iraq on
AMTG-1. After training for so many years, it was great to deploy and
put that training to use.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT THE TOP END?
My family loves everything about the top end - we love the weather
and the Territory lifestyle, including camping and fishing at least once
a month. I am always finding an excuse to go fishing and I’m still
chasing that million-dollar fish!
TERRITORY DAY!
1 JULY
For those of you who
are new to the Top End,
you will quickly realise that
the Territory Day
celebrations are not to be
missed! On 1st of July every
year, Territorians of all ages
celebrate the anniversary of
their independence from
the Commonwealth
Government (since 1978)
with fireworks, concerts and
community events in many
areas across the Top End.
Using fireworks is dangerous and there are a number of
things to consider if you are planning to join in the festivities:
• Always light fireworks away from your body and face
• Always point the fireworks in a safe direction away from
people and buildings
• Keep a bucket of water nearby to extinguish any fires
• Ensure that you ignite fireworks in a space that is free
from flammable materials and exhilarants
• Do not pick up fireworks or debris immediately after
lighting as they can cause severe burns
• Do not purchase illegal fireworks. Only use a reputable
supplier with the correct licence to sell fireworks
• Soak ‘faulty’ fireworks in water for 24 hours prior to
disposing
• Be safe - look out for your mates and other people
DRY JULY
Could you give up alcohol for one month?
Every year, Dry July encourages us to give up alcohol for
one month to raise funds for cancer patients and their
families and carers. And while it’s all about helping to
ease the burden, reduce stress and add a bit of comfort
for those affected by cancer, there’s another very
important reason to stop drinking: your health.
THE BENEFITS OF GIVING UP ALCOHOL
As well as the obvious benefits associated with quitting
drinking, like more energy, no hangovers, spending less
money and no guilty feelings associated with a long
night’s drinking, abstaining from alcohol for just a few
weeks can have a remarkable improvement on your
health.
You might also find it helpful to collect all of the money
you would normally spend on alcohol to see how much
you save every month – and then donate it to your Dry
July fundraising efforts.
MORE ABOUT DRY JULY
The organisation helps to provide things that may not be
front of mind following a cancer diagnosis, like getting to
and from an appointment, helping to find accommodation,
Wi-Fi and mobile phone charting stations. Their programs
also help to fund free services for cancer patients –
including wellness programs, complementary therapies and
wig libraries.
Find out more at www.dryjuly.com
People who have quit have reported effects like clearer
skin, reduced feelings of anxiety and greater motivation –
and, there’s also evidence to suggest that even shortterm
abstinence can benefit your liver and blood glucose
levels – not to mention your waistline.
A few years ago, a team from New Scientist wanted to
see what happened when they gave up drinking for one
month. In the study, ten people abstained from alcohol
for one month, while four continued to drink as normal.
At the end of the month, the changes were, according to
the researchers, “dramatic and consistent across all 10
abstainers”.
Extracted from Defence Health
– Health HQ
https://healthhq.defencehealth.com.au/
2016/06/28/give-alcohol-one-month/
Liver fat dropped 15 to 20 per cent, while blood glucose
levels dropped 16 per cent on average. These results
were collected via blood samples and ultrasounds that
were done before and after the month.
Another great reason to give up drinking for a month is
that it can lead to a long-term drop in alcohol
consumption. Researchers from Sussex University found
exactly that when they investigated the long-term effects
of the UK’s Dry January campaign. According to their
results, 72% of participants had maintained lower levels
of harmful drinking and 4% were still not drinking after
six months.
TIPS ON SURVIVING THE MONTH
If you’re a regular drinker, it can be difficult to imagine
having no alcohol for one month, so it may help to:
• Tell everyone – as you’ll be fundraising you want to
raise as much funds as possible, and telling people
that you have given up may also make it easier for
you to commit to the cause
• Experiment with different drinks – keep things
interesting by trying different types of herbal teas,
sparkling water with lemon and lime, bitters and the
occasional flavoured soft drink
• Find new ways to relax – if winding down and an
alcoholic drink go hand-in-hand for you, try to seek
new hobbies and ways to relax, like working out,
warm baths, a yoga or meditation class, listening to
music, and walking
DARWIN’S SIGNIFICANCE IN THE
LEGACY TORCH RELAY
2023
I have not had anything to do with Legacy since I
was a girl, but I felt a strong alignment to Legacy’s
vision with the work we do at The Top Ender Tri-
Services Magazine and supporting the health and
wellbeing of the veteran community. I was
thrilled to be accepted as a Torch Bearer for the
Darwin route of The Legacy Centenary Torch
Relay 2023, however I didn’t realise the historical
significance of the path that the relay was going
to take. I spoke with Legacy NT President, Scott
Perkins, about the significance of the route.
The RAAF Darwin gates provide the first significant
location as it was a pivotal point during WWII, still
bearing bullet hole scars! Then, heading down Stuart
Highway to Ross Smith Avenue. Ross Smith Avenue was
the original Darwin airstrip and the set-up for Ross &
Keith’s famous flight in 1919 from England. It was also a fighter airstrip
during the war - a prominent part of the defence of northern
Australia, which is now a park (where the aircraft idled) and the old
WWII Qantas Hangar.
The relay included the route from Fannie Bay to Gilruth Avenue, then
onto the current location of Darwin High School. The Darwin High
School site was originally Vesty’s Meatworks who made Bully Beef,
which was sent to the trenches until the end of WWI, and later
became the first military barracks for Darwin Mobile Force (our
first permanent force in northern Australia) in 1939. Torch Bearers
then paid homage to the first burial of victims in the Darwin bombing,
as they passed Mindil Beach.
Travelling along Gardens Road, past the old Telegraph Station at the
entrance to the Botanic Gardens, then to Daly Street and the
Esplanade. On the right as one reaches the Esplanade is Doctors
Gully. Doctors Gully was a Catalina (amphibian craft) Base. The
Esplanade, which was the site of anti-aircraft gun emplacements, saw a
significant number of live rounds shed in the defence of Australia.
The torch travelled past the Cenotaph, the old footy oval and gunning
place near Government House, then onto Parliament House as the
site of the original Darwin Post Office, which was significantly damaged
in the first wave of bombing on the 19th of February, 1942. In this
historical location, the cauldron was lit, followed by a small gathering at
Parliament House.
This is without a doubt the most historically significant journey
within the Australian route of the relay and an incredible experience
that I will cherish for the rest of my life.
INTRODUCING
GOOD SHEPHERD
LUTHERAN COLLEGE DSM
KATHLEEN COBBAN
Meet Kathleen Cobban, our Defence School
Mentor. Kathleen and her family have been
part of the defence family community for
almost 10 years. She has four children and a
wide understanding of the ups and downs that
come with the lifestyle of moving around the
country, changing schools and being away from
family.
It can be an unsettling and stressful process when making
frequent moves and having to find your feet in a new
location.
Kathleen’s role is to aid in this process and help
students and their families integrate into their new
community as they transition into a new school. She
provides access to support programs; being an advocate
and welcoming ear for those who are living with the
challenges of the lifestyle such as dealing with parental
deployment, training exercises and unaccompanied
postings.
Kathleen’s personal experience with those challenges
meant that choosing the right school for her children was
an important task. She found Good Shepherd Lutheran
College and its community the perfect fit for her family.
She is now able to share information about this vital
service to other defence families in the same situation.
The College has outstanding Early
Learning Centres at each campus.
• Howard Springs Campus
(Corner Whitewood Road &
Kundook Place) – Early
Learning Centre to Year 12
• Leanyer Campus (94 Leanyer
GOOD SHEPHERD LUTHERAN COLLEGE
Good Shepherd provides each student with the
opportunity to learn in a safe and caring environment
and provide a program of educational excellence. It is an
International Baccalaureate World School, offering the
Primary and Middle Years’ Programmes. It has an
exemplary Senior Years Program and renowned Year 12
annual success – Northern Territory Certificate of
Education and Training (NTCET).
Good Shepherd equips students with the means to
flourish in their learning and go on to flourish in their life.
It is a Christian school, which appreciates each child’s
individual strengths, and is committed to helping parents
nurture their child’s growth, development and wellbeing.
The College’s three Junior Schools provide strong
academic grounding with a focus on literacy and
numeracy. Through the International Baccalaureate
Primary Years Programme (IBPYP), the students are
prepared for a global and rapidly changing world where
skills such as being critical and creative thinkers, inquirers,
problem solvers and good communicators are necessary.
The learning experience for students from Years 6 – 10
within the International Baccalaureate Middle Years
Programme (IBMYP) can be described as an education of
the heart, head and hands. Good Shepherd provides
rigorous, challenging and inquiry-based classroom
experiences that empower each learner to engage in
responsible service and action within their community.
Year 11 students are offered the choice of selecting the
Career Acceleration Pathway (trade-based) or the Pretertiary
pathway (further study) of the Northern
Territory Certificate of Education and Training (NTCET).
Both pathways are tailored to individual student needs
and aspirations. Both are challenging and rewarding,
preparing students for their future career directions. Year
12 students continue study in their chosen pathway,
supported by caring, quality teaching and learning
approaches.
STUART PARK CENTRE HAS OPENED
ITS DOORS.
In early May, the Mates4Mates Veteran and Family Wellbeing Centre opened its
doors in Stuart Park to the local veteran and Defence community.
Located at 39 Stuart Highway in Stuart Park, the Mates4Mates Veteran and Family
Wellbeing Centre has been a major project in the works since Mates4Mates received the
$5 million grant from the Department of Veterans’ Affairs in 2020.
The centre includes clinical services, a gym, a veterans’ lounge, as well as space for regular
Mates4Mates social connection activities. The centre also includes other veterans’ support
organisations all with the goal of supporting veterans and Defence Force personnel and
their families in the Northern Territory
If you haven’t had a chance to check out the new centre, be sure to visit the
Mates4Mates team and say hello!
MATES4MATES CELEBRATES 10 YEARS
OF SERVICE.
For 10 years, Mates4Mates has supported almost 10,000 current and ex-serving
Defence Force members, and their families, impacted by service.
Established by RSL Queensland in 2013, this year sees Mates4Mates celebrate its 10th
birthday across its locations in the Northern Territory, North Queensland, South East
Queensland, and Tasmania, as well as online.
Joined by local veterans and family members, the Mates4Mates team in the Top End
celebrated the milestone occasion with a party in the park at Marlow Lagoon. With food,
face painting, games and cake on offer, it was a wonderful day for all those who could
attend and celebrate 10 years of Mates4Mates.
COMMEMORATING
ANZAC DAY WITH
THE COMMUNITY
On the 25 April, we paused with
respect to remember all who have
served in wars, conflicts and
peacekeeping operations.
In honour of ANZAC Day, local veterans
and families embraced the ANZAC spirit
and got busy baking some tasty Anzac
biscuits with the Mates4Mates team.
Creating the classic Anzac biscuit as well as
some Anzac biscuit jars, everyone had the
opportunity to bake some tasty treats to
then enjoy with their afternoon tea.
LIFE BLOG
One of the best parts about being in
the “Defence lifestyle” is that we get
to explore parts of the country we
may not have always intended to visit.
So, what do we do once we arrive?
Up here in the NT, a local mum and business
owner has pulled together resources to reveal
the amazing businesses, playgrounds and family
activities that the NT has to offer.
Head to the website for directories of
businesses near you. If you own a business, you
can also submit an enquiry to be added to their
list.
You can also find information about
playgrounds, playgroups and planning your next
trip to the local markets. If you are looking
outside and dreading the heat or rain, jump
over to the Blog and search through the great
IT FEELS LIKE HOME
Hello from our
family to yours!
$100
COMMUNITY
CONTRIBUTOR
VOUCHER
We are a little RAAF
family living in the
beautiful Katherine and
Tindal area in the
Northern Territory.
During our first stint here in the NT, we fell in love with
this enduring place…. and each other. Meeting as a
young, single school teacher and young avionics
technician we spent most weekends fishing and camping
and even bought a boat together. Camping under the
endless starry sky at the beautiful Douglas Hot Springs.
Sleeping on the boat in Blackfellas Creek off the winding
Roper river, listening to Barramundi boof the waters
surface all around us in the moonlight. In the wet
season, when the Katherine river reaches a certain
height, exploring the Katherine Gorge in a speedboat
was an incredible experience with waterfalls
everywhere.
After five years away, we were yearning to get back to
the Top End and introduce its beauty to our two little
boys (aged three and five).
As a family, we love to get out camping, fishing, exploring
and adventuring as much as we can. From a quick
overnight trip to the stunning Nitmiluk National Park or
a week away, down the rough and dusty Roper Highway,
past Tomato Island camping and fishing at the almost
untouched Port Roper. The boys caught their first
barramundi here and love having a bubble bath in a
plastic tub and sleeping in their tent.
Sometimes we enjoy a night or two at Timber Creek
with its stunning escarpments, a swim at Edith Falls or
Mataranka’s Bitter Springs, followed by a yummy lunch
at the Mataranka Homestead. Kakadu, Litchfield, Bynoe
Harbour or a bigger trip to the Kimberley or down
towards the centre! There is so much to see, do and
love about the Top End.
The local people from Katherine and Tindal we have
met along the way have become a second family and
this remote little town now feels like home... a home
we have come back to.
Perhaps we will see you
here one day!
Happy adventures,
Love Chris, Chloe,
Book Review
Book - Stoker Munro Survivor by David
Spiteri
Written by CAPT
Dylan Conway
6th Battalion Royal
Australian Regiment
Editor at BrothersNBooks
Our Mission
• Change the culture of
Education in Australia
• Promote reading as a
means of therapy, personal
growth and success
• Create community
libraries around Australia
• Recommend books that
change lives in the hopes
of changing someone else’s
Background - I come from a strong Army
family with 3 currently serving, I went a
little bit against the grain and spent 8
years in the Royal Australian Navy; 4 ships
and 3 Operational deployments.
The books key lessons and advice:
Resurgence is always possible.
A true account of a hero that many
haven’t had the privilege of reading.
Courage, resilience and determination
that just continues to grow through
Stoker's war.
Result - Have always kept this story in
the back of my mind when facing a tough
time.
To always be able reflect on what Lloyd
Munro went through is a great way to
rise up and keep going, nothing in my life
can compare to the perils that he went
through, and he was said to always do it
with laugh.
SUCCESSFUL
RESUME DESIGN
WILL YOUR CURRENT RESUME GET YOU PAST
THE FIRST CHALLENGE WHEN APPLYING FOR
A JOB?
Did you know that the time commonly estimated that
recruiters and employers will spend reviewing your
resume is 6-8 seconds. This can sound so deflating when
you have spent countless hours tweaking and producing
what you feel is sure to get you that next position. Let's
look at what can make your resume get noticed and less
likely to be rejected.
THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF TEXT
Make sure your resume is not intimidating and
overwhelming with a wall of text. There needs to be white
space to increase the impact of your words and to help
with navigation.
Eye tracking studies by the Nielson Norman Group in
2006 found that people scan content using an F–shaped
pattern of scanning. The F’ shaped layout mimics our
natural pattern of reading with our eyes trained to start at
the top-left corner and then scan horizontally. We then
drop down to the next line doing the same until we find
something that catches our attention.
CHOOSE A STANDARD FONT
When choosing a font for your resume, standard fonts of
11-12pt are recommended. Examples include: Calibra,
Arial, Helvetica, Cambria, Verdana, Georgia. These fonts
make for easy reading and ensure that the alignment of
your resume will be the same on the recruiter’s computer,
as the standard font will be installed. It will also allow for
computer based Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to be
able to read your resume.
FINALLY, WHAT NOT TO INCLUDE
There are a few things that you should not include in your
resume design such as: graphics, logos, tables, text boxes, a
photo of yourself, headers/footers. These items have the
potential to interfere with Applicant Tracking Systems
(ATS) and these computer programs will be unable to
read your resume.
Update from Defence Families of Australia
One of the things we get very good at as Defence families is adapting to change.
In April, the Defence Families of Australia (DFA) team said farewell to our National Delegate for the NT and Kimberley,
Georgia Usher, who has relocated interstate with her family.
Georgia joined our team in late 2022 and made a strong impact on family advocacy for Territorians. She will be very missed by
the team and stakeholders.
Georgia is in the process of handing over her role to a new appointee.
Please keep an eye out on our social media channels and website for
more information. A handover period does not mean things are standing
still. The DFA team continues to closely monitor issues important to the
NT and Kimberley Defence community.
To help give you some insight into our work, we recently published the
latest version of our Advocacy Map on our website at dfa.org.au/
advocacy-map.
This document outlines our current work and offers the opportunity for
Defence families and other stakeholders to support these advocacy
efforts.
Among some of the advocacy achievements our team has played a key
role in are:
• Obtaining an increase in the Remote Leave Locality Travel (RLLT)
entitlement of one extra trip per year.
• Achieving an increase of the ADF Family Health Program benefit
from $400 to $800 and expansion of eligible services that can be
claimed.
• Supporting the Defence Veterans Family Support Strategy through:
contributing to the development and delivery of the survey, and
providing key information to the Steering Committee and Working
Group to inform the guiding principles of the strategy.
• Engaging regularly with the Royal Commission into Defence and
Veteran Suicide Commissioners and their team to make submissions,
and to identify family engagement opportunities and share
information gathered over the years through DFA’s appointment to
the Stakeholder Reference Group.
• Consulting with the Australian Institute of Family Studies on the
Strengthening and Protecting Veteran Family Relationships Study.
• Obtaining a commitment to the national expansion of the DHA
Flexible Housing Trial.
If you believe there is an issue which has not been identified in the
Advocacy Map, please reach out to our team. You can also get in touch
with us if:
• You would like advice on the best point of contact to resolve an issue
• You have been unsuccessful in resolving an issue through existing
channels
• You identify an existing policy gap which affects your family.
proper form and technique. His workouts are a mixture of cardio
and strength training, so you'll be sure to get a full body workout.
One of the best things about Frank's Fitness classes
THE PILBARA REGIMENT
FAMILY GROUP
The first half of this year has just flown by in the Pilbara!
Thankfully, the weather is cooling down now and we are able to
get out and enjoy the beautiful part of Australia that we live in.
In April, we headed to the Karratha Leisureplex for an AquaRun Easter
Family Day. The kids tested their skills on the KiddyDash AquaRun and
hunted for Easter Eggs on the lawn. A barbeque lunch was enjoyed by all.
Also in April, the Pilbara was treated with a rare occurrence of a solar
eclipse - members in Exmouth experienced a total solar eclipse, while
those in Karratha got to witness about 97% totality. We still had a fun
morning of it, with a delicious morning tea spread and craft activities for
the kids. The kids painted Easter Dioramas provided by DMFS and made
their very own Pinhole Projectors to view the eclipse with.
Coffee catch-ups are still proving very popular and we have checked out
quite a few of the cafes around town. These are held on the last Monday
of every month. Alternating with these, you can join us for Morning Tea in
the Mess, roughly every other fortnight on a Friday.
CASUARINA STREET PRIMARY SCHOOL AT
THE BOMBING OF
KATHERINE CEREMONY
On the 22nd March 2023,
Casuarina Street Primary School
attended the ceremony for the
Anniversary of the Bombings of
Katherine. The ceremony was
opened by Her Worship the
Mayor Elisabeth Clark with the
arrival of His Honor The
Honorable Hugh Heggie PSM The
Administrator of the Northern
Territory. The beginning of
ceremony also began with an air
raid siren and a fly over.
On 22 March 1942 during the Second World War, Katherine was attacked by the
Japanese Navy, marking the southernmost point of the bombing raid on the
Northern Territory. The Japanese targeted the Katherine airfield, dropping most of
their bombs in and around the site where the Katherine Museum is located today.
Our principal, Miss Renez Lammon, Defence School Mentor, Miss Claire Stewart
and the school captains Kye, Maddie, Charlie and Layla represented Casuarina
Street Primary School with pride and excitement by laying a wreath during this
ceremony. The students learnt a great deal attending, all about this important event
that happened 81 years ago. The students also got introduced to 1940’s music, met
some current Defence serving members and then finished with a lovely morning tea.
It was a great way to introduce students to some Katherine History.
An evocative reminder of the former
Northern Australia Railway and the great
hopes held.
Pine Creek Railway Station was a railway
station on the former North Australia
Railway in Pine Creek in the Northern
Territory. The railway was extended to
Pine Creek in 1889 during the gold rush
and was the southern terminus of the line
until 1914. The station operated until 1976,
and during World War II Pine Creek was
one of the four dispersal bases on the
North Australian Railway with up to 147
services a week. The station precinct is the
most complete remaining example of
infrastructure associated with the North
Australia Railway.
Today you will see one of the original Beyer
Peacock locomotives on display and a
former Western Australian Government
Railways TA class diesel-electric shunting
engine. In addition to the railway building
with waiting rooms, there is a large goods
shed and a house for a railway employee.
STARFISH SWIM GROUP
The Starfish Swim Group was formed in 2005 by Donna
Rousham, who recognised the need to assist children with
special needs to learn to swim and be safe in the water. The
aim was to provide an opportunity for families, who have
children with disability, access to a free water skills
program*.
Starfish objectives are for young children with disability to:
• have opportunities for individualised instruction and coaching
• learn to swim at their own pace and to become confident in the
water
• gain a healthy body through exercise in the pool
• have the opportunity to socially interact with others
• have the opportunity to follow a competency pathway towards
participation in other swimming organisation activities
Starfish do not charge families to register their children for swimming
sessions or charge any instruction fees. The Swim Group conducts
lessons each week and each session is 30 minutes of one-on-one
instruction with our Aust-swim accredited instructors.
Programs run from 1pm-6pm, Monday to Thursday every week, and
are coordinated by the founder, Donna Rousham, who has
developed a wonderful relationship with the kids and parents.
VETERANS’ HEART HEALTH PROGRAM
BEATING STRONG FOR 23 YEARS
The Department of Veterans’ Affairs’ (DVA’s)
preventive Heart Health program has been
assisting eligible veterans of the Australian
Defence Force (ADF) to address risk factors
of heart disease for over 23 years.
The Heart Health program is a free, year-long program,
accessible to eligible veterans nationally. The program
helps veterans to improve their heart health through
practical exercise support, nutrition advice, health
education, and lifestyle management. The goal of the
program is to help veterans incorporate exercise and
good nutrition into their daily routine and to make
healthy lifestyle choices.
The program is available in two delivery modes: in a
group setting or individually. Both modes provide access
to healthy lifestyle information, regular custom food diary
reviews and the support of program staff to ensure they
get the most out of the program.
1. The Heart Health Group program: veterans meet in a
group of 10–15 other veterans for weekly exercise
sessions and monthly education seminars run by
experienced health and exercise professionals, usually in a
gym or leisure facility. The group setting connects veterans
with others in their local community, keeping them
motivated as they each progress through their health and
fitness journeys.
2. The Individual Program: is delivered by phone, web,
and mail. This individual program is best suited to
veterans living in more remote areas, or who have work
family or study commitments and/or may not be suited
participate in a group environment. The individual
program provides participants access to their own
program ‘health coach’ and personalised exercise
resource, such as assistance with access to a local gym or
swimming pool. Participants receive fortnightly healthy
lifestyle coaching sessions over the phone, web or email
with their health coach, who keeps the participant
focused on the goals they have for their own health and
fitness.
The program has been managed and delivered on behalf
of DVA by the team at Corporate Health Management
(CHM) for over nine years. CHM and the team
delivering this program are mindful of the veteran
experience and how healthy lifestyle and exercise
choices can do their part in improving the heart health
of veterans with the implementation of selfmanagement
strategies related to health, fitness and
wellbeing.
The Heart Health Program is open to veterans with
operational deployment or those sent on a peacekeeping
mission. The program is also open to those who fall
under the ADF firefighter’s scheme. To check your
eligibility please visit the Heart Health Program website
https://www.veteranshearthealth.com.au/eligibility/
All participants will also need a program medical
clearance form to be completed by their local GP.
Program enrolment and medical clearance forms are
THEY CAME TO RESTORE HOPE:
AUSTRALIAN
FORCES IN SOMALIA
A few years ago, I helped to renew a push for
the acknowledgement of the ADF personnel
who deployed to Somalia in late 1992.
I learned there were several Somalia veterans in the
Top End: most were members of 1 RAR, one was with
the attached Engineer Troop, and there may be others.
Thirty years on from the peace enforcement operation,
some of them travelled to Canberra where they lead
the national ANZAC Day march.
While our nation’s memorials, public holidays,
and history books rightly honour the heroism of
the diggers who scaled the cliffs of Gallipoli, fought in the
sands of Tobruk and in Kokoda’s dense jungles, the
Australian Defence Force’s (ADF) unsung role in
United Nations-sanctioned peace enforcement and
peacekeeping operations has received comparatively
little attention.
This year, as we remember 50 years since the end of
our involvement in the Vietnam War, Australians also
have an opportunity to commemorate the troops
who deployed to Somalia in 1992, in what was then
the ADF’s most significant intervention since Vietnam.
Operation Solace was Australia’s contribution to the
US-led, UN-authorised Unified Task Force (UNITAF)
deployment to the famine-ravaged country. The UN
mission was code-named Operation Restore Hope.
After rival clans ousted its decadeslong
dictator Mohammed Siad Barre, Somalia descended
into anarchy, with rival militias fighting over
scarce resources and obstructing the delivery of
international aid.
When an estimated 300,000 Somalis starved to death
and millions more were at risk of dying, soldiers from
UNITAF stepped in to provide security for relief
efforts.
38 The Top Ender | Tri-Services Magazine Incorporated

The ADF contributed 1,600 troops overall, the
majority consisting of an infantry battalion group built
around the Townsville-based 1RAR, Cavalry, Engineers,
and Navy and Air Force elements to move them into
the area of operations.
Operation Solace was a watershed for Australia’s
military as the first deployment of a battalion group since
4RAR deployed to South Vietnam in 1971.
The Australians patrolled the 17,000 square
kilometre Baidoa humanitarian relief sector in the
southwest, 240 km from Mogadishu, encountering a hot
and dry land and enemy gunfire on arrival.
Diggers were unanimously praised for their ability to
restore law and order in the Australian sector, an
outcome which relied on the intense patrolling that is
customary in Australian operations and that would be
used to great effect in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The operational tempo was as exhausting as it was
rewarding for the ADF contingent - we can be proud
of our troops for their professionalism in difficult
conditions.
The heart of this deployment was the 1st Battalion of the
Royal Australian Regiment Group, and it is to its brave
men and women that we owe such a successful
outcome in what was a grim, war-like environment.
It is therefore entirely fitting that the deployment
has been recommended for a meritorious unit
citation (MUC) for its role in Operation Solace.
Considered since at least 2010 when it was
opposed in an inquiry, this recognition is long
overdue. Last year, the Defence Honours and
Awards Appeals Tribunal found that the
deployment deserved more recognition.
Somalia veterans lead the ANZAC Day march in
Canberra this year in recognition of the 30th
anniversary of Operation Solace and Operation
Iguana - our ADF personnel can be very proud
BILLEROY HOUSE
Billeroy House is pleased to see the Army Indigenous Development
Program (AIDP) join the ranks this year. The AIDP team did an amazing
job to keep the house and gardens looking amazing. Thank you to the
AIDP crew. Also, a big thank you to Allan and Brendon for their
continuing support. Wednesday mornings wouldn’t be what they are
without a few volunteers in the kitchen, working hard to ensure we are
well fed. Thank you to Char, Sheena and Paddy for consistently keeping
our bellies full!
Veterans, past and present, together with their families are welcome
every Wednesday to meet new and old mates. Our centre is open
WHAT IS AN ADVOCATE
Advocates are people who are trained to help you access
DVA services and payments.
They tend to be members of the veteran community, such as
veterans and partners of veterans. They are not DVA staff
members.
ESO advocates are trained in the 'Course in Military Advocacy'
through the Advocacy Training and Development Program
(ATDP).
HOW ADVOCATES CAN HELP
• Advocates can help you prepare and lodge:
• claims using MyService or our paper forms
• requests for a review of our decisions
• appeals to the Veterans' Review Board (VRB) and
Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT).
They can also represent you at VRB and AAT hearings.
Advocates can help you access information and referrals for
services such as:
• health and treatment
• rehabilitation
• housing
• transport
• support for transitioning
to civilian life
• medical, financial, legal
and police matters
• funeral arrangements and
bereavement assistance.
If you need extra support, they can put you in touch with other
government and community services.
You can expect quality advice and services from advocates.
This is because they follow the claims advocacy service
standards.
Advocates with training under the ATDP and working for an
ESO advocacy service provide these services for free, although
they may ask you to pay a small amount to cover incidental
costs.
FAMILY DAY CARE
@KENTISH
Kentish is a children and community services provider with
over 100 educators and 80 employees across the NT. We
have offices in Palmerston, Katherine and Alice Springs.
Kentish runs two long day care centres in Moulden and
Tennant Creek. Kentish also runs Family Day Care (FDC)
services and Out-of-Home-Care (OOHC) services.
FDC is suitable for families seeking care and education in a
small group setting and for those who require childcare around
shift work or irregular hours. Over the COVID pandemic, FDC
became very popular as it creates a smaller and safer social
circle for children in care. FDC also gives the children a more
stable relationship as children get to be with the same
educator until they reach school age.
BECOMING AN EDUCATOR
As a FDC educator you will run your own business from home.
You can have your own children as well as other children under
your care. Since it is your own business, you can choose your
clients, your opening hours and availability for weekends and
overnight stays and set your own fees. FDC educators can take
care of up to four children under the age of 5yo and three
school-age children.
FDC operates under the same National Quality Framework
(NQF) - FDC parents are eligible for Federal Government
Child Care subsidies, just like any other long day care
arrangements. Kentish has an FDC coordinator who
supports FDC educators. Kentish provides free
trainings and programs, giving all educators
opportunities to upskill, meet other educators and
provide interesting activities for children.
THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE BECOMING
A FAMILY DAY CARE EDUCATOR
FDC educators will need minimum of Certificate III in
Early Educator and Care or be willing to commence
studies. As with any businesses, your business expenses
are tax deductible, you may claim the cost to run the
business such as educational materials, toys,
maintenance, electricity, car, cleaning expenses and
modifications to your home.
Are you looking to purchase a used car?
USED CAR CHECKLIST
Due to the shortage of new cars in Australia, the price
of used cars has increased, sometimes by as much as
50%, compared with pre-pandemic levels. Logic indicates
that there are likely to be price drops in the used car
market as interest rate increases impact personal loan
and lease repayments, but if you need to buy a car soon,
here’s our shortlist of things to think about before doing
a deal on a used car:
1. Pre-purchase Inspection - Arrange a pre-purchase
mechanical and body inspection. This condition should
be not-negotiable. It must be independent (that is, not
by the seller or an associated company) and the results
should be in writing. The inspection is likely to cost you
money (at least $200), but it is always money well
spent. If the seller won’t agree to an independent
inspection, walk away;
2. Title and Accidents - Always check the car’s clear
title and history through your state or territory
motor registry and at ppsr.gov.au. If you don’t, you
might be buying a car that has an outstanding financial
encumbrance (loan or debt) on it or it might have been
financially written off by an insurer after an accident.
The former can lead to the car being repossessed from
the new owner. The latter, called a “repairable write-off”
will almost always be cheaper to buy, may not be able
to be insured or even registered by you, the new
owner;
3. Maintenance History - Make sure the car has a
strong and documented maintenance history from
new in Australia. If the car was imported from
overseas later in its life, pay special attention to its
history and country of origin. Most overseas imports
sell at substantial discounts, reflecting the substantial
risks inherent in buying such a car (e.g., covered-up rust
from driving through snow, ’dodgy’ repairs, non-genuine
parts, worn-out engines and wound-back odometers).
4. Warranties - Late model used cars purchased from
dealers often come with a short statutory warranty period
(usually three months). Buyers of used cars through dealers,
whether a statutory warranty applies or not, will often be
convinced to buy a used car warranty through a financial
institution on which the dealer is paid a commission. These
warranty policies are often best described as ‘junk insurance’
because they may be written in such a way that claims are
difficult to make and/or very limited in value. You can read
more about your consumer rights and warranties at www.
accc.gov.au;
5. Auctions - Many people buy cars at auction in the hope
of securing a lower price. That strategy can be successful, but
auctions usually offer limited scope for independent
inspections. Be especially aware of the legal conditions on
which you’re buying at an auction. These will be published by
the auctioneer and offer limited (if any) scope for a change of
mind once you’ve made the winning bid. Consider attending
an auction before you buy to get a feeling for the experience
and what to expect;
6. Sealing the Deal - Like all other industries, the car industry
is driven by monthly sales targets. So, try to seal the deal as
close as possible to month end when sales figures are about
to be finalised. Also, don’t overlook the considerable benefits
of buying a new car in 2023 with 2022 compliance and build
plates.
EVERYMANS SERVICE
VEHICLE REPLACEMENT PROJECT
We have been striving for a number of years to
upgrade our fleet of vehicles - four that were
manufactured in the 1990’s and six between 2000
and 2005.
The vehicles we have purchased in recent times have been
deployed with units in Queensland, where there is a
considerable amount of work, in time and distance,
expected of them. They support the ADF in some
extreme locations from Cultana in South Australia to
Titjikala in the Northern Territory; and in Queensland, they
venture out to Shoalwater Bay, Wide Bay and High Range, Townsville. They can
be gone for months at a time, and the weather conditions can vary, as you can
probably imagine, from hot and dry to bitterly cold and muddy!
Our Reps love being out there supporting the ADF, and often allied forces as
well, as they undertake these exercises, to ensure they are always fit and
ready for the challenges of this uncertain world we live in.
As the vehicles age, they are re-deployed to locations where the demand on
them is not as punishing, and so with some TLC, we can extend their life and
usefulness to Everyman’s and the ADF. As much as we care for them, they do
reach an age where the cost of maintaining them would be better put towards
the purchase of a newer vehicle with lower maintenance costs.
In addition to replacing our ageing fleet, we have also needed to expand it to
meet the demand in recent years to provide, re-establish or expand services on
some bases (Royal Military College at Duntroon; Enoggera, Canungra and ARTC
Kapooka). This is where the fleet renewal project started and it will be ongoing
for the foreseeable future.
ADF - you can donate online to
PROJECT KARMA
DO YOU REALLY KNOW WHO YOU ARE
TALKING TO ONLINE OR ON SOCIAL MEDIA?
Unlike when your parents were your age, chatting and
playing games with friends and meeting new people is
now often through social media and online games, like
TikTok, WhatsApp, SnapChat, Twitch, Roblox and
Minecraft. You can follow and even send messages to
your favourite singer, actor, or influencer no matter
what country they live in! What seems like a whole
other world for your folks, is likely pretty normal to
you and your friends! When your parents were your
age, your grandparents were probably telling them to
‘get off get off the phone’ (because it was the only one
in the house and was probably attached to a wall with
a cord which may or may not have been long enough
to reach their bedroom).
Social media and online gaming can be fun and exciting. You
can keep up to date with your friends and the latest trends.
Most online platforms have strict safety rules in place to
protect you and the millions of young people who use them
every day, however they may not be perfect and there are
probably gaps you don’t know about.
It is important to remember that these apps and online
platforms are used by people all over the world and there can
be some dangers you or your friends don’t even realise!
Especially if you are messaging or gaming with someone you
have never met in person before. Unfortunately, there are
some people out there who may try to trick you and tell you
lies about who they really are.
So how do you know if someone online is not being truthful
about who they are and what can you look for:
Someone might not be telling the truth about who they are
and make up fake information about themselves, (like their
name or their age, even what they look like) and say things to
make you like them. They might pretend to be someone you
know, a celebrity or even someone who doesn’t exist.
They might also:
• ask you about what things you like and don’t like (such as
hobbies, sports, music or current trends) or tell you nice
things about yourself or give you gifts.
• ask about your friends, family or where you live or to
meet you in person or ask you to send them something
(like a photo or video) you are not comfortable with.
• tell you a story about how they are in trouble and need
your help, or make you feel sorry for them.
• be super friendly for weeks or even months to build up
your trust and then get angry or try to make you feel
guilty if you don’t tell them something or threaten to do
something to upset you if you don’t do what they ask.
• tell you to keep your chats with them a secret or not to
talk anyone else about them.
So, what can you do to protect
yourself and your friends and
what do you do if something
makes you uncomfortable or
seems a bit strange?
• tell your parents or another
adult you know and trust
(like a schoolteacher or
counsellor, aunty or uncle or another family member, or a
sports coach or dance teacher). Even if they might not
understand you can teach them about the social media or
online game you are using and show them what you are
worried about.
• never share information like where you live, your birthday
or photos or video’s about yourself, your family or your
friends to anyone you have never met in real life.
Remember, they may be super friendly, but they may not be
who they say they are.
• make sure your ‘online’ settings like ‘privacy’ and ‘security’ are
set so that strangers can’t connect with you or see personal
information about you (like where you live or what school
you go to). If you are not sure if your settings are keeping
you as safe as possible, check with your parents or a trusted
adult who knows (or can google) how to make your
settings a safe.
• don’t delete any chats or information from them, take
screen shots or recordings. If they are found to be ‘fake’,
having this information can help make sure they don’t
contact and lie to another young person.
• show your parents or an adult that you trust straight away
and report them to the social media or gaming app they
contacted you on.
• block or mute them so they can’t contact you again.
What is really important to remember is if this happens to
you, or if someone tricks you …. It’s never your fault! Some
people are very good at being fake and making young (and
even old) people believe them!
What’s even more important is to let someone know so that
you, your friends, or someone else you care about do not get
into situations they don’t want to be in get hurt. Telling someone
can be hard and takes courage. You may worry what your friends
or other people will think or say about you, or you will get in
trouble. Don’t stress, not only will you not likely get in trouble,
but people will be proud and grateful that you protected
yourself and helped to keep other young people safe.
You can find some great information for young people and tips
to stay safe online at the eSaftey Commissioner website: https://
COST OF LIVING
As the cost of living increases, our wallets can
certainly feel the pinch. When it comes to
personal finance we can look at two main
actions; increase our income or decrease our
expenses. If increasing your income is not an
option, then it is certainly time to review your
expenses.
Here are some basic budgeting tips that may help:
• Review your budget: look at all of your accounts
for the past quarter (3 months) and categorise
your budget into main areas, remember to factor in
annual expenses, such as:
• Home and Utility costs: this includes all regular
expenses such as mobile, internet, subscriptions,
virus protection software, cloud storage accounts
etc
• Insurance & Financials: this includes all insurances
from the house or contents, vehicle or boat
insurance, personal health insurance and debt
repayments
• Groceries: those quick trips to the shop add up,
don’t guesstimate here, do the sums and you may
find this is an area of increase.
• Personal & Medical: Toiletries, pharmacy trips, hair
or beauty expenses, hobbies, glasses or other
miscellaneous expenses
• Entertainment & dining out: add up all take-away
foods, nights out, dining, babysitting expenses (if you
have kids).
• Transport & Auto: Think anything vehicle or travel
related. A great tip here is too factor in your annual
expenses such as vehicle registration and license
expenses, have that money factored into your
budget to help stop the scramble each year to pay.
• Children: Baby products, toys, educational items,
subscriptions, school fees, sports, excursions etc.
Once you have reviewed your expenses you will see
clearly the areas that may need to be altered to create
space within the budget for other financial goals.
Set goals - most of us need motivation to save funds,
so it may be a smart strategy to create a vision board
and set milestones for your goals;
1. Immediate goals – within 12months
2. Short term goals – 1-3 years
3. Medium-term goals – 3-10 years
4. Long term goals - +10 years
Grocery bills can be reduced with some forward
planning. We may not have Aldi in the NT but we do
have markets for fresh produce and you can plan to
shop with seasonal produce.
Meal Plan, Food Prep, Pre-cook - these three
options can take time to organise, but it can be
financially beneficial for some big savings!
Identify Needs Versus Wants - when shopping,
consider whether you want or need an item. Look at
other methods to purchase ‘wants’, such as layby
with smaller regular payments. Avoid buy now, pay
later schemes or high interest credit options.
Reduce waste, reuse when suitable - make the most
of sites like Gumtree, Ebay and Facebook
marketplace.
Declutter and sell what you can. You may find your
behaviours around spending start to change! Watch
“Space Invaders” on Channel 9 (9now) for tips on
decluttering.
Focus on reducing debt or savings - once your
expenses are lowered you can focus on paying off
debts quickly or increasing your savings.
Entitlements - know and understand your
entitlements and allowances, including the
implications for your taxable income – you could
also book an appointment with the ADF Financial
Services Consumer Centre.
Entertainment - give yourself a challenging
entertainment budget and see if you can get
creative with having fun on a budget.
Some inexpensive entertainment ideas include;
Board game nights
Shared picnic or
dinner with friends
Movie night
Free entry into
Museum or gallery
Try new recipes
CHAPLAIN’S
CHAT
It’s probably a sentiment felt and vocalised every
year, but it feels like the year has galloped along at a
great rate of knots. We humans like to label things
and mark progress and progression in different ways,
one of which is to divide our year into seasons. In
the Northern Region, we are getting ready to move
from hot, humid and ‘wet’ into hot, slightly less
humid, and dry (unless we count under our arms).
Yes, the nights are cooler, and those of us away from
the coast will see an even more marked reduction in
humidity but if a massive change in temperature is
what you desire, then you may have to manage your
expectations.
Defence has its own way of measuring seasons that differ
slightly from Base to Base and across services but remain
relatively consistent. Posting, Promotions, Anzac Day, Exercise
Period(s), Performance Review, Remembrance Day, End of
Year Functions, and inevitably, back to Postings. You may find
yourself thinking, “Wow is it (insert season here), already”.
Uniformed members are aware of these subtle seasonal
changes, so it can be comforting to know that one period
will soon end and another begin. It is worth remembering
that our families, partners and friends aren’t as synced into
these seasons as us; they may not have the awareness of the
difficult season coming to an end - to them, this may be the
‘new normal’.
When our Canberra colleagues post temperature updates
on social media, it can be hard to relate. But, if we find
ourselves posted there, the support of a local can let us
know that ‘this too shall pass’ - invest in some thermals.
Hard times or busy periods aren’t forever but sometimes
it takes the support of a local, someone who has
witnessed the season, to alert us to what it looks like,
how to best protect ourselves, and when it ends.
Postings to the Northern Region can be tough, for many
the ‘honeymoon period’ has ended. The excitement and
adventure that we had planned looks more like a reduction
in support and less access to family, friends, and large
department stores. For those wearing a uniform, we have
lots of ‘locals’ around us that can help point us in the right
direction; even if we might need to look outside of our
normal workplace for what we need – luckily, we have a lot
of options out there. It’s not always as easy for our partners
and families (don’t forget the kids). We don’t have to do it
alone; organisations like Chaplaincy and DMFS are there
to help, and at the very least can provide access or
awareness to many other avenues. With help, we all
become ‘locals’ eventually.
NT CONSUMER AFFAIRS
HELPING YOU UNDERSTAND YOUR
CONSUMER/TRADER RIGHTS AND
OBLIGATIONS
“Hi, I’m not sure if you can help me or not”…. This is
something we hear quite regularly when people contact
us at NT Consumer Affairs.
Whilst we are not a one stop shop for everything a
Territorian needs, we can certainly provide advice on the
12 legislations we administer to businesses, consumers,
tenants and landlords of the NT. If we are not able to
assist with your query, we will endeavour to point you in
the right direction.
The most common enquiries we receive are in relation
to goods and services, tenancies (residential and
business), residential building disputes and uncollected
goods.
We provide advice in relation to your rights,
responsibilities and obligations under the Australian
Consumer Law (ACL), whether you are a consumer or a
business that sells goods and services. Some of the
protections that the ACL provides are for consumer
guarantees, door-to door-sales, trades practices, unfair
contract terms, unfair practices and unfair trading, lay-by
agreements, product safety and information standards that
apply to goods and services.
Are you a tenant or landlord renting a residential
premises in the Territory? We can provide you with
advice under the Residential Tenancies Act 1999 (RTA).
The RTA is law that fairly balances the rights and duties of
tenants and landlords. It provides a framework for
landlords, tenants and agents to understand their rights
and obligations in relation to residential tenancies. The
RTA aims to ensure that landlords and tenants are
provided with suitable mechanisms for enforcing their
rights under tenancy agreements and the RTA; that
tenants are provided with safe and habitable premises and
are able to enjoy appropriate security of tenure
So, you decide to stay in the Territory and are thinking of
building a new home. Building a new home is one of the
biggest expenses most people have in their lives but
unfortunately, things can go wrong with a new build. NT
Consumer Affairs manages the consumer dispute
resolution aspects of the Building Act 1993. If you have a
dispute with your builder we may be able to assist in
resolving the difference of opinion.
If you are a business left holding unwanted goods as a
result of customers failing to pay for or collect goods that
have been repaired; or a consumer who has been notified
that your goods are going to be disposed of under the
Uncollected Goods Act 2004, we can provide you with
advice on the appropriate action to take.
For more information on the full range of legislation
administered by NT Consumer Affairs, visit our website
for a range of comprehensive information. If you would
like to obtain free and confidential advice on one or more
of the above topics, you can contact us via:
GROM
AGEING GRACEFULLY
My mind harks back to the days when I started riding at
sunrise and finished when I could no longer see the trail
before me, in accordance with my parents’ instructions.
Despite the overhanging threat of lost riding privileges or
reduced funding for motorcycle parts, even at a young age,
my mind already knew that riding motorcycles would be a
life-long love affair for me - I played the long-game. Some
juvenile decisions, even throughout my transition to
adulthood, almost reduced this life-long love-affair to a oneday
match, but I survived. On many cringeworthy occasions,
my luck was more valuable than my skill or ability, and I am
grateful to now be enjoying my twilight years.
Ageing on motorcycles requires some planning and discipline to
continue the journey. Our bodies wear in a similar fashion to
motorcycles. Superficial damage can obviously be rejuvenated (if
that’s your preference), but the common components on a
motorcycle begin to wind down in a subtle way over time, similar to
the rider’s body; headlights dim, eyes strain. Wheel bearings, brakes
and shocks all deteriorate and can’t quite perform to optimum levels,
just the same as knees, hips, feet and ankles all suffer from wear and
deterioration. As we find ourselves entering our vintage years,
Voltaren and heat rubs replace adrenaline, which was our
‘medication’ of choice in our younger years. With the engine fired
and the throttle pinning, the excitement was heightened by
adrenaline, causing physiological changes; the heart beats faster and
blood surges into our muscles, heart and other vital organs. Breathing
increases and all senses sharpen.
But, as with most injuries, pain is not easy to ignore and many
riders suffer with pain, which may be caused by normal wear and
tear of joints and muscles, or it can be targeted pain caused by
previous accidents and injuries, which are amplified with certain
physical movements. Stretching before a ride can help, as can
regular exercise between rides, good diet and whatever keeps your
brain fresh and alert.
Comorbility, is a medical term that translates to the
simultaneous presence of two or more diseases or medical
conditions, in a patient. Arthritis, which is common in many
people over the age of 50, can often lead to other more
dramatic issues in ageing - obesity, diabetes and heart
disease can occur when exercise levels and lifestyle are
jeopardised due to pain and discomfort. Pain is an everpresent
reminder that we should stop doing something or a
warning sign that something is not quite right, but chronic
pain, is another beast altogether. Chronic pain is probably
the main factor forcing more retirements from riding than
any other cause.
There are a number of articles about ageing and riding, with
a focus on the probability of more motorcycle related
injures, which are often more severe due to the extended
recovery times for older riders. By all accounts, head and
thoracic injuries are more common in older riders.
But for me, motorcycle riding is a leisure pursuit, despite the
physical consequences. I ride for fun and work and I don’t
wish to stop something that I enjoy completely - it’s good
for my head and body, and the feeling of youth quickly
returns when the visor drops. Gone are the days of eat,
rest, repeat... When sunset nears and my energy levels drop,
it’s time to head home and rest, rest, eat, plan and endure
my next ride. I will continue riding with chronic pain and less
adrenaline at my age, but my passion for riding will
overcome most of my ailments.
Ride safe, ride long.
RESTAURANT REVIEW
DARWIN HARBOUR DINNER & CRUISE
Stokes Hill Wharf Darwin | darwinharbourcruises.com.au
f Darwin Harbour Cruises
ABOUT THE CRUISE
Note: meals selections are subject to change seasonally
Access: easy on/off access
Time frame: 2.5 hours return
Make new friends as you cruise from the harbour whilst the sun begins to
make its way gently below the horizon... this is Darwin Harbour Dinner
Cruise
Three dining experiences available to book aboard the Charles Darwin, a threetier
catamaran, including Captains Deck (inside), upper deck and front bow.
As we walk “up the plank” we’re uncertain what to expect; there is an air of
excitement for what we are about to experience. We’re directed toward our
table for tonight we have chosen to dine inside for this fair skinned little lady!
We’re seated and immediately begin to chatter with our neighbouring cruisers,
until we are called to attention by the Captain who begins our cruise with a
Darwin style humorous safety brief, followed by commentary on local landmarks
and architecture thrown in with a little Darwin history.
The waters are smooth as we make our way around the coast toward
Larrakeyah, mesmerised by the views and the various landmarks mentioned
(Government house and the Lighthouse are easy to spot!!).
Our “Captains Deck” meals are served buffet style beginning with an entrée of
local crustacean and mollusc (aka prawn and oyster) with a side of roll as each
table is directed to stand and self-serve. Delightfully fresh, we enjoyed every
morsel that passed our lips!
Barely complete, we are offered our main course, consisting of a
variety of local seafood, selection of hot dishes to cater to the
carnivore and herbivore alike, with sides of baked vegetables or
salad, followed by an assortment of fresh fruits and desserts.
We’re free to move around the cat to capture the scenic views and
sunsets whilst enjoying a nice glass of our favourite bevvies, the
breeze in our hair and naturally a chat with others aboard who’re
experiencing their cruise a little differently out in the open air.
All too soon, we’re back in the harbour. The return trip
encompassing the night lights of the Stokes Hill Wharf ferris
REPTILES IN THE NT
Most of the reptiles in the NT are lizards,
particularly skinks with over 100 species.
The NT has five common species of marine turtle,
including the green, flatback, olive (or pacific) ridley,
hawksbill and loggerhead and the leatherback turtle
is spotted occasionally.
Territory beaches are important breeding sites for
the leatherback, pacific ridley, flatback, hawksbill
and green turtles. There are between five and ten
freshwater tortoise species.
The saltwater (estuarine) and freshwater crocodiles
are a feature of the Top End.
While other notable reptiles include goannas,
especially the huge perentie of Central Australia, the
frilled neck lizard and the thorny devil.
Snakes are also common and diverse, with about 90
species, including 20 sea-snakes, recorded from the
Territory.
NT SNAKES INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:
• Oenpelli python, the endemic large snake in
western Arnhem Land
• water python which can be seen commonly at
night at Fogg Dam
• black-headed python and woma which are
beautifully marked snakes that prey largely on
other reptiles
• very dangerous snakes such as:
the mulga
king brown
western brown
taipan
the death adder
Threatened reptiles in the Territory include several of
the marine turtles, three species of goannas that are
vulnerable to cane toads and some of the skinks that are
restricted to small areas.
SNAKES
Many snake species are found throughout the Northern
Territory, including the highly venomous desert death
adder and the common and harmless children’s python.
Native snakes are protected in the NT so you should
not interfere with them without a permit. Head to the
NT Government website to read more about wildlife
permits - https://nt.gov.au/environment/animals/wildlifepermits/permits-take-interfere-with-wildlife
It is illegal to kill a snake unless it is within 100 metres
of an occupied building, or if you can prove it is
absolutely necessary to kill or injure the snake to
avoid death or injury to a person or domestic animal.
There are a number of things you can do to reduce snake
problems, including all of the following:
• keep your garden tidy and maintained by:
• cutting long grass
• clearing rubbish
• storing wood and metal sheeting elevated off the
ground
• control rats and mice around your home
• build snake-proof aviaries, fowl yards and other small
pet cages
• wear long pants and thick boots when walking in long
grass
• keep your dog and/or cat safe
• contact a registered snake removalist - you may have to
pay a fee.
Seek medical attention immediately if you are bitten by a
snake.
ENDANGERED REPTILES IN THE NT INCLUDE:
Arafura snake-eyed skink
Arnhem land gorges skink
Flatback turtle
Great desert skink
Green turtle
Gulf snapping turtle
Hawksbill turtle
Leatherback turtle
Loggerhead turtle
Oenpelli python
Plains death adder
Yellow-snouted ground
ARTHRITIS IN
DOGS AND CATS
Osteoarthritis is common in dogs and cats,
especially as they get older. Chronic pain
from osteoarthritis can affect a pet’s
quality of life, both physically and
emotionally. There are multiple treatment
options available, including a new injectable
treatment. The first step is recognising
possible signs and realising that they are
not just a normal part of ageing.
Cats are good at hiding pain - signs of pain and
arthritis can sometimes be difficult to recognise in
cats but if your cat is dealing with osteoarthritis
pain, you have probably noticed some changes to
their everyday behaviour. If you are observing any of
the following signs, it is worth having a visit with your
vet:
• Difficulty jumping up or down (or jumping less)
• Difficulty going up or down stairs
pets will benefit greatly from this treatment, and it is
considered a safe treatment option. It is given as an
injection under the skin once a month and can be used
in combination with most other medications and if
concurrent medical problems (such as kidney disease)
exist.
Another injectable treatment for arthritis (pentosan/
cartrophen) has been available for many years. It helps
to maintain joint health by making the cartilage more
resistant to degradation. It is given as a series of
injections (initially weekly) and is generally well tolerated.
NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) can be
given orally to help control the pain and inflammation of
osteoarthritis. In most animals, improvement can be seen
in a matter of days. While serious side effects are rare,
they can occur, so it is important to follow your vet’s
advice closely. NSAIDs usually need to be avoided in
animals with kidney disease, so blood tests are
recommended to monitor kidneys and liver while on
treatment.
• Difficulty running
• Difficulty chasing moving objects
• Being less playful, personality changes
• Grooming less
• Having accidents outside the litter tray
In dogs, look out for the following symptoms:
• Limping after exercise
• Lagging behind on walks
• Being slow to rise
• Difficulty jumping
• Appearing stiff
• Difficulty going up or down stairs
While arthritis can’t be cured, there are many
treatment options that can help manage the pain of
osteoarthritis.
For both cats and dogs, there is a new treatment
available for osteoarthritis. It is a monoclonal
antibody that neutralises nerve growth factor (NGF),
which is involved in the perception of pain. Some
58 The Top Ender | Tri-Services Magazine Incorporated

A relatively new oral treatment is also available
which can be tried in dogs which are unable to
tolerate NSAIDs.
Nutraceuticals (foods or supplements added to
foods that provide health benefits) can also be
helpful in pets with arthritis and utilise natural antiinflammatories
eg. Omega fatty acids. Prescription
diets are available for pets with joint diseases and
there are many other supplements available. Speak
to your vet about the best options for your pet.
If your pet is overweight, reducing their weight can
make a huge difference to their comfort and
mobility. There are prescription diets available that
can help target weight loss in conjunction with
helping to manage joint disease. Speak to your vet
or vet nurse about a weight loss plan.
Some pets will need a combination of these
treatment options to help keep them comfortable.
Recognising symptoms and starting treatment earlier
in the course of the disease process is likely to give
us the best results long term.
YOUTH
WEEK
DARWIN YOUTH WEEK
NTYW is a fantastic opportunity to connect Defence
Youths with Defence Youths. We understand the trials
and tribulations that defence life offers, which is why
we are passionate about ensuring our Youth get to
experience “a little something” from our community
as a way to acknowledge their part in supporting
their defence parent - we know it isn’t always easy.
With thanks to the NT Government’s Youth Week initiative, The
Top Ender Magazine received some funding to create a number
of events, which were well accepted and attended by a fabulous
group of Defence youth. This years Youth Week theme was Break
Free, Unleash Your Story and we had some valuable discussion
around the challenges and benefits of defence life, as well as what
defence youth would like to see and do in the Top End.
The weather was hot and humid, but we had fun watching Super
Mario Bros at the Movies, Barefoot Bowls and a laidback day of
Crazy Sundaes!
Here’s what our families had to say:
“The events aimed at
youth are a nice change;
youth tend to be
overlooked in the Top
End in favour of younger
kids”
“Thank you for
doing this”
“I hope to see more
things targeted at
the teenagers”
“Great activities
for the teens that
they loved”
TINDAL
YOUTH WEEK
During NT Youth Week, a group of young
people from the RAAF Tindal Community
were able to participate in some fun activities
thanks to The Top Ender and Network Tindal,
and proudly supported by the NT
Government Youth Week Grants Initiative.
Our group of young people embraced the
opportunity to enjoy the gorgeous weather on a
guided two-hour boat tour of the Katherine Gorge
with Nitmiluk Tours. After some rain had fallen in the
days prior, we could see waterfalls flowing and the
river a little higher than usual for that time of year.
We learnt about the formation of the unique zig-zag
gorge system, the wildlife that inhabits the area and
the changes it experiences through the seasons - it
was a great morning!
Another group of youth joined in the fun to see
Super Mario Bros during NT Youth Week. With some
buttery popcorn and a drink in hand, we enjoyed the
time out at Katherine Cinema 3.
Thanks to The Top Ender, Network Tindal and the NT
Government for this opportunity!
