Meet Kathleen Cobban, our Defence School
Mentor. Kathleen and her family have been
part of the defence family community for
almost 10 years. She has four children and a
wide understanding of the ups and downs that
come with the lifestyle of moving around the
country, changing schools and being away from
family.
It can be an unsettling and stressful process when making
frequent moves and having to find your feet in a new
location.
Kathleen’s role is to aid in this process and help
students and their families integrate into their new
community as they transition into a new school. She
provides access to support programs; being an advocate
and welcoming ear for those who are living with the
challenges of the lifestyle such as dealing with parental
deployment, training exercises and unaccompanied
postings.
Kathleen’s personal experience with those challenges
meant that choosing the right school for her children was
an important task. She found Good Shepherd Lutheran
College and its community the perfect fit for her family.
She is now able to share information about this vital
service to other defence families in the same situation.

Good Shepherd provides each student with the
opportunity to learn in a safe and caring environment
and provide a program of educational excellence. It is an
International Baccalaureate World School, offering the
Primary and Middle Years’ Programmes. It has an
exemplary Senior Years Program and renowned Year 12
annual success – Northern Territory Certificate of
Education and Training (NTCET).
Good Shepherd equips students with the means to
flourish in their learning and go on to flourish in their life.
It is a Christian school, which appreciates each child’s
individual strengths, and is committed to helping parents
nurture their child’s growth, development and wellbeing.
The College’s three Junior Schools provide strong
academic grounding with a focus on literacy and
numeracy. Through the International Baccalaureate
Primary Years Programme (IBPYP), the students are
prepared for a global and rapidly changing world where
skills such as being critical and creative thinkers, inquirers,
problem solvers and good communicators are necessary.
The learning experience for students from Years 6 – 10
within the International Baccalaureate Middle Years
Programme (IBMYP) can be described as an education of
the heart, head and hands. Good Shepherd provides
rigorous, challenging and inquiry-based classroom
experiences that empower each learner to engage in
responsible service and action within their community.
Year 11 students are offered the choice of selecting the
Career Acceleration Pathway (trade-based) or the Pretertiary
pathway (further study) of the Northern
Territory Certificate of Education and Training (NTCET).
Both pathways are tailored to individual student needs
and aspirations. Both are challenging and rewarding,
preparing students for their future career directions. Year
12 students continue study in their chosen pathway,
supported by caring, quality teaching and learning
approaches.
