We are a little RAAF<br />
family living in the<br />
beautiful Katherine and<br />
Tindal area in the<br />
Northern Territory.<br />
During our first stint here in the NT, we fell in love with<br />
this enduring place…. and each other. Meeting as a<br />
young, single school teacher and young avionics<br />
technician we spent most weekends fishing and camping<br />
and even bought a boat together. Camping under the<br />
endless starry sky at the beautiful Douglas Hot Springs.<br />
Sleeping on the boat in Blackfellas Creek off the winding<br />
Roper river, listening to Barramundi boof the waters<br />
surface all around us in the moonlight. In the wet<br />
season, when the Katherine river reaches a certain<br />
height, exploring the Katherine Gorge in a speedboat<br />
was an incredible experience with waterfalls<br />
everywhere.<br />
After five years away, we were yearning to get back to<br />
the <strong>Top</strong> End and introduce its beauty to our two little<br />
boys (aged three and five).<br />
As a family, we love to get out camping, fishing, exploring<br />
and adventuring as much as we can. From a quick<br />
overnight trip to the stunning Nitmiluk National Park or<br />
a week away, down the rough and dusty Roper Highway,<br />
past Tomato Island camping and fishing at the almost<br />
untouched Port Roper. <strong>The</strong> boys caught their first<br />
barramundi here and love having a bubble bath in a<br />
plastic tub and sleeping in their tent.<br />
Sometimes we enjoy a night or two at Timber Creek<br />
with its stunning escarpments, a swim at Edith Falls or<br />
Mataranka’s Bitter Springs, followed by a yummy lunch<br />
at the Mataranka Homestead. Kakadu, Litchfield, Bynoe<br />
Harbour or a bigger trip to the Kimberley or down<br />
towards the centre! <strong>The</strong>re is so much to see, do and<br />
love about the <strong>Top</strong> End.<br />
<strong>The</strong> local people from Katherine and Tindal we have<br />
met along the way have become a second family and<br />
this remote little town now feels like home... a home<br />
we have come back to.<br />
