EREBUS ARMY MECHANIC I spent six years serving in the Reserves as a driver in the RACT corps, then I transferred to full time Army in 2016 as a vehicle mechanic (RAEME). After Initial Employment Training, I was posted to 1CER Darwin until the end of 2022. In Jan 2023, I was posted to Erebus Motorsport as a mechanic. HAVE YOU ALWAYS LOVED MOTORSPORT? Yes, I have followed the Supercars and Superbikes since I was young, which led me to start racing in Motorkhana as a hobby in 2022 and I won Rookie of the Year. WHAT IS THE PROCESS OF BECOMING AN EREBUS MECHANIC THROUGH ARMY? To get opportunities in the Army you need to work hard and show that you are motivated - if you work hard, there are lots of different opportunities and options available. I received a group email about this opportunity, so I submitted an application through my Chain of Command. Because I had worked hard and shown that I was responsible, my Chain of Command were happy to forward my application. Having some experience in the motorsport industry helped but it was not the main reason for getting this position. WHAT SKILLS HAVE YOU ALREADY LEARNED THAT YOU CAN APPLY TO YOUR MILITARY CAREER? This experience has taught me more about working under pressure, especially on race weekends but also remembering to stay focused and calm in this kind of environment. The skills I am learning will continually develop and help in all aspects of my military career. I have also learned how to work in a different type of team environment, which has similar values to the Army. This has helped to develop my leadership skills and a better understanding of working together as a team to achieve a winning result. The additional skills I have learned for mechanical and fabrication work will help to enhance the ways I work with Army equipment and I will be able to teach other Army mechanics in the future. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT WORKING ALONGSIDE THE EREBUS TEAM? It is great to get involved with the Gen 3 Supercars and working with the Chevrolet Camaro. I have loved seeing the overall management of a great Supercar race team and the amount of product development that goes into getting the cars ready to race. It has been fun to get to know the team members and learning different things from a number of experts in this industry. Although it has been a lot of hard work, it has been rewarding to see the cars succeed on the racetrack, which makes all the hard work worthwhile.
