Update from Defence Families of Australia
One of the things we get very good at as Defence families is adapting to change.
In April, the Defence Families of Australia (DFA) team said farewell to our National Delegate for the NT and Kimberley,
Georgia Usher, who has relocated interstate with her family.
Georgia joined our team in late 2022 and made a strong impact on family advocacy for Territorians. She will be very missed by
the team and stakeholders.
Georgia is in the process of handing over her role to a new appointee.
Please keep an eye out on our social media channels and website for
more information. A handover period does not mean things are standing
still. The DFA team continues to closely monitor issues important to the
NT and Kimberley Defence community.
To help give you some insight into our work, we recently published the
latest version of our Advocacy Map on our website at dfa.org.au/
advocacy-map.
This document outlines our current work and offers the opportunity for
Defence families and other stakeholders to support these advocacy
efforts.
Among some of the advocacy achievements our team has played a key
role in are:
• Obtaining an increase in the Remote Leave Locality Travel (RLLT)
entitlement of one extra trip per year.
• Achieving an increase of the ADF Family Health Program benefit
from $400 to $800 and expansion of eligible services that can be
claimed.
• Supporting the Defence Veterans Family Support Strategy through:
contributing to the development and delivery of the survey, and
providing key information to the Steering Committee and Working
Group to inform the guiding principles of the strategy.
• Engaging regularly with the Royal Commission into Defence and
Veteran Suicide Commissioners and their team to make submissions,
and to identify family engagement opportunities and share
information gathered over the years through DFA’s appointment to
the Stakeholder Reference Group.
• Consulting with the Australian Institute of Family Studies on the
Strengthening and Protecting Veteran Family Relationships Study.
• Obtaining a commitment to the national expansion of the DHA
Flexible Housing Trial.
If you believe there is an issue which has not been identified in the
Advocacy Map, please reach out to our team. You can also get in touch
with us if:
• You would like advice on the best point of contact to resolve an issue
• You have been unsuccessful in resolving an issue through existing
channels
• You identify an existing policy gap which affects your family.
ABOUT DFA
Defence Families of Australia (DFA) is
the official Australian Defence Force
(ADF) families advisory body to the
Minister for Defence Personnel and
Chief of the Defence Force (CDF).
Our organisation sits outside of
Defence systems, allowing DFA
independence and impartiality to act in
the best interests of ADF families.
We are connected to Defence family
communities in our regions, and are
largely veterans or family of Australian
Defence Force members.
