Pensioner who was punched in the 

face by teenager speaks of ordeal

A PENSIONER has spoken 

publicly for the first time after 

being attacked as a group of 

alleged burglars fled his property. 

The 71-year-old was savagely 

punched in the face by one of 

the teenagers, leaving him hospitalised. 

John, who wanted to be 

known only by his first name, 

lives with his wife on a lifestyle 

block on Birchs Rd, Prebbleton. 

He said he was not angry at 

his attacker. 

He told the Selwyn Times: “I 

don’t feel very much anger towards 

them, I don’t know what’s 

put them in that situation, it’s 

more an inconvenience for me, 

but for them it’s not the best 

pathway to enjoy happiness,” he 

said. 

John fell back and hit his 

head on the ground after being 

punched, sustaining a bump 

to his head and scraped elbow. 

But the worst was his eye injury 

from the punch. 

This involved a broken 

facial bone that required 

surgery to rejoin a muscle and 

tendon. His eye remains swollen 

shut. 

The stitches have been 

removed and he is expected to 

make a full recovery.

LILY ALFELD is starting 

to catch the attention of 

football fans across the 

Tasman. 

Lincoln-raised Alfeld is 

playing for Perth Glory in 

the W-League, earning the 

competition’s Save of the 

Round award in the team’s 

first two games (see page 18). 

The 25-year-old represented 

New Zealand extensively 

at youth level through 

World Cups in Trinidad 

and Tobago, Azerbaijan and 

Canada while she also toured 

the United States, Argentina 

and Brazil. 

She has now moved to 

Western Australia, after the 

Wellington Phoenix’s bid 

to join the W-League was 

blocked late last year. 

Goals include making this 

year’s Tokyo Olympics and 

the World Cup in New Zealand 

in two years. 

And it all started way back 

as a four-year-old via her 

father Nick, whose friend was 

a soccer coach.

Petition started against pre-school 


ABOUT 60 homeowners in 

a new subdivision are calling 

for the developer and district 

council to reassess plans for an 

early learning centre. 

A Montessori centre is 

planned for Flemington’s 

O’Reilly Rd, Lincoln. But 

people who live there had 

always believed the area was for 

greenspace. 

Scott Loeffler said he and fellow 

homeowners were sold lots 

on or near Lincoln Reserve with 

the promise that it would not be 

developed in any other way, with 

the exception of a cafe or some 

medium-density housing on the 

south end. 

“In the five years since we have 

bought, no-one has been told of 

any other development,” Loeffler 

said. 

“It was sold both by the agent 

and the developer as a ‘green 

development’.” 

But he and neighbours had 

heard through the grapevine 

about the pre-school plans, to 

take up about half of the greenspace 

at the reserve. Loeffler and 

four of his neighbours THEN 

went door-to-door seeking petition 

signatures. 

About 95 per cent of neighbours, 

totalling about 60 homeowners, 

were concerned about the 

proposal and signed the petition,

which asks the developer Shane 

Kennedy and the district council 

to reassess plans for the centre. 

The neighbours expect traffic 

and noise issues from the centre, 

that will have space for more 

than 100 children. 

Loeffler said there were already 

at least eight pre-schools 

in Lincoln, including two across 

the road from the Flemington 

subdivision. 

He said the district council 

had issued resource consent 

for the project, which was nonnotified 

so neighbours did not 

have the opportunity to submit 

feedback. 

Homeowners were to meet on 

Monday night to discuss what 

sort of action they may take. 

Council resource consent 

team leader Rosie Flynn said a 

resource consent was issued for 

the pre-school in May last year. 

“The properties where the 

pre-school and its car park are 

being built were never vested 

as reserve, but were retained in 

private ownership by the subdivision 

developer,” Flynn said. 

“The council took legal advice 

on whether or not the consent 

should be notified, and the 

advice was that the covenants 

signed by the residents when 

they purchased their properties 

legally amounted to written approval 

for the development.” 

Kennedy did not get back to 

the Selwyn Times for comment 

by deadline.

Sayer said Parsons’ death would 

leave a large hole in the brigade 

and the community. Parsons is

their children and grandchildren. 

NO DECISION ON COWS 

Lincoln University has yet to 

determine how many cows 

it will need to cull following 

Mycoplasma bovis being detected 

on its research farms. The Ashley 

Dene Research and Development 

Station and the Lincoln University 

Research Dairy Farm have herds 

comprising more than 700 cows. 

A spokesperson said research 

under way at the two farms 

would need to run its course 

before a decision was made on 

depopulating. The cows would 

also have to have finished being 

milked for the season. For these 

reasons, the depopulation process 

had not yet begun in earnest.

enjoyed a relaxed evening 

meal before John went 

out to his shed, near the 

house, at dusk, to lock 

it up and put away the 

chickens. 

He noticed a young man 

with a petrol can in his 

shed and told him to put 

it down. The man ran and 

dropped the can, and was 

joined by three or four 

others as they fled. 

They ran down the 

neighbour’s driveway, 

which is behind the shed, 

to get away, leaving their 

car, believed to have been 

stolen, parked behind the 

shed in the driveway as 

they did so. 

John dialled 111 on his 

cellphone and followed 

them down the driveway, 

with the intention of being 

able to tell the operator 

where they were going. 

At the end of the driveway 

the group turned 

right onto Birchs Rd, and 

then to John’s surprise 

they came back around 

the corner “at full speed” 

towards him. 

They ran past him in the 

driveway towards their 

car, and as they did so one 

of them swung a punch, 

hitting John side-on.

He fell backwards and 

hit his head, and then had 

to quickly move his legs 

off the driveway as the offenders’ 

car reversed back 

out to the road as the culprits 

made their getaway. 

By this time John was 

connected to the 111 

operator, and he was able 

to report the burglary and 

that he had been hit, saying 

“and there’s quite a bit 

of blood.” 

Police arrived within 

three minutes, and the 

ambulance within four to 

five minutes. 

“They were very quick,” 

John said. 

He said the whole 

incident, from when he 

first saw the man in his 

shed to being punched 

and lying on the ground, 

was a mere 10 to 12 

seconds. 

John described his attackers 

as being European 

in their late teens. 

“They were the sort of 

kids you see kicking a 

rugby ball down at the 

beach to impress the girls. 

That’s what I think they 

should have been doing,” 

John said. 

“(It is) just sad, that four 

to five young lads aren’t at 

the best place for their age 

at this stage in their lives.”

to pull out of the Selwyn Sounds 

fifth anniversary music festival 

because of Covid-19 restrictions. 

He has been replaced by the 

addition of two New Zealand 

music icons in The Chills and 

Zed for the big music festival at 

Lincoln Domain on March 6.

NEW DARFIELD High School 

principal Andy England is 

looking forward to building 

on work by the school’s acting 

principal and limited statutory 

manager as he takes over the 

reins at the 750-pupil school. 

“I believe schools exist to serve 

their community, and in a rural 

community you have to meet 

everybody’s needs,” England 

said. 

The 47-year-old was previously 

principal at Greymouth High 

School, which has a roll of about 

550. He was principal there from 

2013, following teaching at the 

school since 2001. 

“I was looking for a new challenge,” 

England said of taking up 

his new role on this side of the 

Southern Alps. 

His goal is to build relationships 

within the community,

identified areas of concern at 

the school in 2019 prompting 

the appointment of the limited 

statutory manager. Simpson has

“I think the school has some 

huge strengths and I’m looking 

forward to building on those 

strengths,” he added. 

Among those strengths was the 

school’s “incredible” rural college, 

which trains pupils in farming 

including practical skills such 

as using farm machinery, fencing 

and safe quad bike riding. 

“It seems to be a very successful 

college, giving people the skills 

they need for the booming 

primary industries,” England 

said. 

England is originally from 

the United Kingdom, and was 

born in Sheffield. However, his 

birthplace is very different from 

the village near Darfield of the 

same name. 

England said the UK’s Sheffield 

had been an industrial city all 

those years ago, so there was no 

comparison to the pretty green 

village here in New Zealand. 

England has not lived in Britain 

for about 20 years, and is a New 

Zealand citizen. 

He is a keen kayaker, so will be 

getting out onto the rivers surrounding 

Darfield, while taking 

the odd trip back to the West 

Coast for his favourite pursuit 

of whitewater kayaking. He also 

enjoys mountain-biking and 

hunting. 

“I have always enjoyed the 

foothills and the Southern Alps,” 

he said.

Full steam ahead in Bill’s backyard 


BILL STANLEY, 67, has created a 

model train lovers’ fantasy land in 

his backyard at Lincoln. 

Five years ago he and wife Maggie 

moved to their .2ha block. 

Where most people envisioned 

a flourishing lawn and gardens, 

Stanley saw “a blank canvas, 

just waiting for a garden railway 

layout.” 

He set to work, and today has 

eight model trains which run 

on more than 200m of track, set 

amongst a 27m diorama of buildings, 

settlements, fields and bridges. 

The 1/24 scale trains pass 

through all sorts of activity 

amongst the Playmobil people, 

vehicles and buildings, including 

a wedding outside Lincoln Union 

Church, fields being harvested, 

and a quarry being mined. 

Some of the buildings, including 

the church, Stanley has made 

himself, learning first through 

the Canterbury Garden Railway 

Group of which he is a committee 

member, and then teaching 

himself along the way. 

The track and its impressive 

setting, complete with a pond and 

real goldfish, has been a labour of 

love, and one that has its origins 

in Stanley’s childhood. 

“Trains just fascinated me as a 

child and they still do, we have 

been from LA to New York by 

train,” he said. 

His grandfather William Stanley 

gave him a Hornby double O 

railway set when he was about 

five. 

William had worked on the 

railways, and Stanley has inherited 

the whistle that William used 

in his job, believed to be as an engineer, 

and keeps it on his garden 

railway key ring. 

Stanley kept the passion for 

trains and railways moving 

down the generations; he and 

Maggie bought their 29-year-old 

son Richard his first engine when 

he was a baby. 

They continued to add to the 

collection, and always incorporated 

train travel in their overseas 

trips. These were for professional 

purposes in earlier years 

as Stanley travelled as part of his 

job as a pharmaceutical company 

director. 

The trip through the United 

States was in the 1990s, while 

they also lived in Thailand for 

five years to 1998 and travelled 

extensively through Europe. 

“You can set your clock by the 

trains in Switzerland,” he said. 

While trains in Thailand at 

the time were substandard in 

comparison, they had been just as 

enjoyable to travel on as the country’s 

elephants and longboats. 

Stanley sometimes has groups 

come and view his backyard 

garden railway creation, and it is 

a hobby he enjoys with others in 

the garden railway group, which 

will be hosting the National

due to be open late next week.

Way, who will need to give way. Please 

drive carefully and observe all traffic signs

Driver doing burnouts? Contact police

I HOPE that everyone had an 

enjoyable break over the festive 

period and managed to spend 

some quality time with their 

families. 

With the warmer weather we 

have noticed an increase in antisocial 

road user behaviour (“boy 

racers”) throughout the district 

and there is a significant increase 

in burnout marks left behind at 

numerous intersections and sections 

of the road. 

In worst-case scenarios, this 

can lead to damage to the surface 

of the road, removal or reduced 

visibility of road markings or 

damage to road signs if vehicles 

lose control and hit them. 

All these can result in costly 

and time-consuming repairs and 

inconvenience to ‘regular’ road 

users. 

Police would like to hear from 

anyone who witnesses a vehicle 

doing a burnout. As long as we 

get the registration or a good description 

of the vehicle (unique 

features and/or an address that 

the vehicle is seen returning to) 

so we can find out the registration 

of the vehicle carrying out 

the sustained loss of traction, we 

can act. 

Please don’t put yourself at risk 

or confront these unruly drivers 

in an attempt to stop them 

or identify the drivers or their 

vehicles. 

Police response to these incidents, 

usually involves impounding 

the vehicle for 28 days and 

charging the driver. Offending 

drivers are fined and disqualified 

for a period of at least six months 

if convicted in court. 

Where the driver is unknown, 

police can serve a letter on the 

owner of the vehicle which requires 

them to supply the details 

of the person who was the driver 

of the vehicle at the time of the 

incident. 

Failure by the owner to supply 

UNLAWFUL: A period of six months disqualification, and a fine, may be imposed on a 

driver if convicted of sustained loss of traction.

and a maximum fine of up to 

$20,000. If the original offence 

is related to road safety – such 

as sustained loss of traction – 

a period of up to six months 

disqualification may be imposed 

on the vehicle owner who failed/ 

refused to provide driver details. 

We have had a couple of great 

results lately where the driver 

of these vehicles carrying out 

the burnouts has been ordered 

to pay reparation for repairs to 

the road which has added up to 

thousands of dollars. 

Canterbury Police have a 

dedicated squad of officers on 

the anti-social road user team 

who focus on this kind of activity 

primarily in and around 

Canterbury. 

But where a pattern of behaviour 

starts to appear – locations 

and time frames – police can direct 

resources to target the issue. 

Of course, this relies on the 

members of the community 

letting police know where and 

when it is happening as well as 

any other details of incidents. I 

would encourage you to report 

these (and other) incidents to 

police, no matter how small you 

may believe the issue to be. 

Police can’t act on it if we are 

unaware of it. 

Reporting crime can be done 

in a number of ways. 

• Phone 111 when you need 

immediate help with a lifethreatening 

or time-critical 

emergency 

• Phone 105 when no one 

is injured or in danger, there 

is no serious risk to people or 

property, the crime isn’t still 

happening. 

• By reporting online at 105.

Workshops have partnered together to stage the 1920s 

murder mystery A Bad Day for Benny. 

Children and teenagers attending holiday 

workshops last week threw all their energy into 

bringing the original script to life, which staged at the 

college on Friday night. 

PLAY owner and drama practitioner Nickie 

Hughes said senior students from the college worked 

backstage on the set design, lighting and sound. 

“It’s quite a nice collaborative experience really, it’s 

been awesome,” she said.

Get new work skills, meet people, enjoy the latest movies, travel the world – there’s something for 

everyone at Selwyn Libraries. 

Membership of Selwyn Libraries provides opportunities to enjoy everything from books, movies, 

and magazines, to exploring the latest technology or enjoying groups and classes. 

Library and Service Centre Operations Manager Hayley Browne says Selwyn Libraries offer a huge 

resource for people in Selwyn and the team is happy to help anyone sign up or find what they’re 

looking for. 

“If there’s anything stopping you from visiting or joining the library, or anything you’d like to see, 

come and talk to us, because we can do something for you.” 

The aim of the libraries is to be a space for everyone from – those just looking for a book, to 

programmes and activities for all ages, Hayley says. 

“We’ve got a programme for everyone. If you’re new to the community, or a parent looking to meet 

other parents and kids, our programmes are a great way to meet people and build friendship” 

Selwyn Libraries was one of the first in the country to go fines free – with no fines on its free to 

borrow items. They have a large range of online resources from movie streaming access, ebook 

and eaudio books, magazines and newspapers, along with te reo singalongs, videos and activities 

for kids. 

The libraries have extensive resources to help people upskill professionally, including drop-ins 

with staff from Ministry of Social Development and Workbridge who work with job seekers and 

employers to help people into employment. 

They also host a range of technology in the library including 3D printers and Virtual Reality 

Headsets and the team are always happy to help people with access to these resources. 

“If you’re working from home you can come in and use the printers and scanners. Or if you’re 

missing travel, you can travel the world through our VR headsets. You can go underwater, or even 

play with dinosaurs,” Hayley says.

Major intersection upgrade 

opening 

The new intersection at Rolleston Drive, Dryden Avenue and 

Norman Kirk Drive will be opening next week. 

The upgrade includes the Markham Way extension and a new road 

layout for Norman Kirk Drive and Markham Way. 

The upgrade has seen Norman Kirk Drive realigned with traffic lights 

installed at the new intersection of Norman Kirk Drive with Rolleston 

Drive and Dryden Avenue. 

The intersection will be fully opened when the traffic lights are 

turned on late next week. The extension of Markham Way and the 

new intersection of Markham Way and Norman Kirk Drive will be 

opened at the same time. 

The new intersection will improve traffic flow on Rolleston Drive, 

supporting access to the Christchurch Southern Motorway, along 

with the Selwyn Health Hub on Norman Kirk Drive. It will also 

provide extra safety and ease up crossing for pedestrians including 

Rolleston School pupils. 

The Markham Way extension will also support access to the 

Rolleston Town Centre and the traffic flow on Tennyson Street.

Good management sees top 

financial rating retained

The Council has retained its top credit rating, with international 

ratings agency Fitch confirming the Council’s financial outlook 

remains stable. 

The AA+ rating, confirmed last week, is the same as the New 

Zealand sovereign rating and the Local Government Funding 

Agency for local currency. 

It is equal to the highest credit rating given to any council in 

New Zealand. 

The rating is a measure of the Council’s ability to meet its financial 

commitments and means that the Council is at very low risk of 

defaulting on its loans. 

It also reflected the Council’s sound financial position and good 

management, the agency says. 

Council Chief Executive David Ward says retaining the top rating 

was a strong endorsement of the Council’s financial management. 

“It’s good to have an independent assessment that backs up the 

hard work put in by Council staff to make sure we’re handling our 

finances in the best way for the long-term future of Selwyn.” 

Mayor Sam Broughton say retaining the AA+ rating is also a 

reflection on the positive outlook for the district and the way the 

Council is responding to growth. 

“We’ve seen over the past year that more people than ever are 

moving to Selwyn for the great lifestyle and opportunities we have 

to offer. Our strong economy has also kept us in a good position 

and this and keeping this rating is a good sign that although there 

may be tough times ahead, we’re in a great situation here in Selwyn 

as a growing and exciting district.”

Olympics, World Cup in Alfeld’s sights 

A LINCOLN-raised goalkeeper 

is quickly making her mark in 

Australia’s top women’s football 

league as she strives for a recall 

to the Football Ferns for next 

year’s World Cup on home soil. 

Lily Alfeld has pulled off a 

string of vital saves for Perth 

Glory in the early rounds of the 

W-League, earning the competition’s 

Save of the Round award 

in the team’s first two games. 

The well-travelled Alfeld has 

settled in Western Australia, 

her latest career move after the 

Wellington Phoenix’s bid to join 

the W-League was blocked late 

last year. 

Alfeld represented New Zealand 

extensively at youth level 

through World Cups in Trinidad 

and Tobago, Azerbaijan and 

Canada while she also toured 

the United States, Argentina and 

Brazil. In Canterbury she played 

for Coastal Spirit and Halswell 

United. 

The 25-year-old was called up 

to the Ferns’ senior squad for a 

tournament in Cyprus in 2014, 

the same year she started college 

at Louisiana State University, 

and she is desperate to make the 

2023 World Cup squad. 

“That’s my goal. The Olympics 

(scheduled for Tokyo this year) 

are the first thing I’m shooting 

for, but to play a World Cup 

at home would be just … you 

couldn’t dream of it,” she told

“When I was a kid and we had 

the under-17 World Cup in New 

Zealand . . . just to see the growth 

of women’s football following that

Baughan said that at 50 he’s 

running out of opportunities 

to get his name on an elusive 

Gold Cup as his racing career is 

now “short-term as opposed to 

long-term”, and this weekend at 

Ruapuna is one of his last cracks

would be amazing.” 

Alfeld was introduced to 

football as a four-year-old and 

immediately picked up the ball, 

an early indication her future 

was shaping as a shot-stopper. 

“Dad had a friend who was a 

coach and got me in that way, 

even at that young age that was 

the sport I got into and loved,” 

she said. 

Alfeld took the sport more 

seriously when New Zealand 

hosted the under-17 women’s 

World Cup in 2008. 

“I watched some training sessions 

and a couple of the games, 

that was my big ‘ah-ha’ moment. I 

thought: ‘That’s what I want to do.’ 

“We went and watched the 

German team train and I’d 

never seen a goalkeeping session 

quite like that. That was when I 

thought: ‘I want to play for my 

country.’” 

Alfeld described the 2012 under-17 

World Cup in Azerbaijan 

as a career highlight, the first 

time she saw game time on the 

global stage. 

“I’d been to Trinidad and 

Tobago (2010) but that was more 

of a learning curve. Azerbaijan 

was pretty memorable, getting to 

at winning the event, that is now 

in its 19th year.” 

“I’ve had a great innings and 

picked up a few trophies and titles 

along the way. The Gold Cup and 

Salute to Goodie races are pretty 

special. I’ve been on the podium 

in both but never quite got the job 

done or won either of them.’’ 

Caleb, who won the 2020 Hydraulink 

War of the Wings Series 

is likely to be to the fore this 

weekend (Saturday and Sunday) 

play against another country, listening 

to the anthem and it gets 

me a bit teary (looking back),” 

she said. 

Her performances in Azerbaijan 

piqued the interest of US 

colleges, with Alfeld opting for 

Baton Rouge-based LSU, who 

play in the highly-competitive 

South East Conference. 

“I actually had a teammate 

(Megan Lee) who had committed 

to LSU the year prior and 

she was the one that got me in 

contact with the coach.” 

Alfeld returned to New 

Zealand in 2018 to play in the 

National League for Auckland, 

and he has been in fine form but 

with over 20 cars entered it will 

boil down to having a bit of luck 

to beat one of the strongest fields 

assembled for the 30-lap race. 

Saturday night sees the Salute 

to Goodie event being raced in 

memory of the late Noel Goodwin, 

a two-time national sprintcar 

champion who lived for a time in 

Christchurch, with the Gold Cup 

being contested on Sunday night. 

Meanwhile, Prebbleton racer 

another stepping stone to Glory, 

where head coach Alex Epakis 

signed her as a replacement for 

Eliza Campbell. 

“Tom Sermanni (Football 

Ferns coach) and Alex are good 

friends, and he was the one 

who suggested that there were a 

couple of Kiwis back home who 

would love to play,” said Alfeld, 

who was signed alongside fellow 

internationals Liz Anton and 

Malia Steinmetz. 

Alfeld, who completed quarantine 

formalities in Perth on 

Christmas Eve, has been a fixture 

between the sticks for Glory, 

who are bottom of the nine-club 

competition after three matches. 

That lowly placing took some 

gloss off Alfeld’s Save of the 

Week awards, as Glory prepare 

for the first leg of a doubleheader 

with Melbourne City on Thursday, 

pending new Covid-19 

restrictions. 

“It was nice to get that recognition, 

but it’s my job. I’m there to 

save those goals. I’m happy I’ve 

been able to have a positive start, 

but it’s more about the performance 

of the team as a whole,” 

she said. 

Glory lost their opening game 

to Adelaide United 1-0 when 

Alfeld was unable to save an 

80th-minute penalty, they lost 

the rematch 2-1 and then conceded 

an 87th-minute equaliser 

to share the point with Canberra 

in their latest outing. 

“Going forward we’re pretty 

confident we’ll get a couple of 

results and be able to prove to 

people that we can do it.’’

Blowing away cobwebs on heritage 

A group of Selwyn heritage and 

historical organisations is calling for 

the district council to back its voluntary 

endeavours. 

The Selwyn Heritage Network is mostly 

run by a self-described group of “ageing 

volunteers who are passionate about 

being able to tell the stories of our past 

to the children and general population 

of the whole district”. 

“The council have clearly identified 

that preserving the heritage of the 

district is important, and we applaud 

you for that. However, history isn’t just 

old buildings. It’s the stories about the 

area and the people who lived here, and 

the tools and devices they used in their 

everyday lives,” members of the Selwyn 

Heritage Network told councillors and 

staff. 

Individuals who were voluntarily 

collecting, collating, cataloguing and 

displaying the important i tems, such as 

articles, buildings and machinery were 

the ones who have the knowledge to 

tell and record the correct story behind 

every item. In a few years these people 

would not be here and other younger 

people may struggle to be accurate. 

“These passionate people deserve the 

ability to see this work to complete, or as 

near to, now,” the council heard. 

“While we as a group do not presume 

to advise what options are open to the 

council, thoughts from the meeting 

were suggestions such as, borrowing a 

significant sum of money to assist with 

some of the ‘big ticket’ items needing 

to be completed now rather than later, 

and then use a district wide rate to 

support that loan and leave a reasonable 

contestable amount to fund the annual 

costs for the organisations of the sector.”

been proactive in offering some annual 

grants and contestable funding streams 

to assist in the day to day costs of some 

of our sector, “with the current level of 

commitment there will never be enough 

fiscal resources available to do the 

important large projects that have been 

discussed in these chambers in the past”. 

Fundraising sausage sizzles and raffles 

would not raise the money required to 

fulfil this task and network members 

have needed to make applications to 

outside organisations for funding to 

cover running costs. 

As a group, the network would like to 

see significant funding towards, among 

other things: buildings and display areas 

made fit for purpose to properly house 

the history of the district in museums 

and historical buildings and story 

boards at specific sites throughout the 

district, in townships and rural areas. 

A call also went out for the 

development and promotion (perhaps 

with an app and brochures) of a heritage 

trail that leads visitors from one place to 

the next, from one end of the district to 

the other. This would bring money into 

the district (e.g. service stations, dairies, 

restaurants, local craft shops) and make 

Selwyn a destination. The network also 

called for monetary support of all the 

heritage and historical societies in the 

area, an on-going contestable fund and 

an appointed staff member at council 

to whom all enquiries can be made and 

who could promote the sector, with help 

from these organisations.

Call for end to ad hoc history 

The district deserves better than a 

“ramshackle shed” to display its historical 

gems, the district council has been told. 

Over the past eight years the Selwyn 

Heritage Centre has been developed at the 

old Ellesmere County Council and Sicon 

yard on Leeston Road. 

Over this time, an enthusiastic and 

passionate group of volunteers have 

spent a recorded 7500 hours on the 

property, buildings, items and articles in 

preparation to open a museum. 

That’s not counting an estimated 4300 

hours on meetings and information 

gathering trips on the development of 

a rural and residential museum for the 

district. 

So far the volunteers have collected and 

catalogued about 8,500 articles and items 

ready to be displayed. The Ellesmere 

Historical Society have built a temperature 

and humidity-controlled archival 

storage facility within the heritage centre 

building to store some of their precious 

documents, records and photographs. 

The local Nagti Moki Runanga of 

Taumutu have a representative on the 

trust board and there is expected to be a 

significant area of display of Maori history 

at the beginning of the chronological 

display hall, including whare, pataka and 

waka. 

Group members told Selwyn District 

Council recently that while the council 

had been generous with fiscal assistance, 

the funds were mostly taken up with 

insurance, power, rates, phone, internet 

and the like. This left little to present the 

major displays required. 

A professional museum in the Selwyn 

District, no matter where, would be a 

jewel for the council and public of Selwyn 

and the envy of other districts, the group 

told council. 

Displays could include rural exhibits 

of shearing, hay making, ploughing, a 

display of fire brigade history, an early 

school exhibit and a few historical vehicles 

and implements. “We could knock up 

some shelves and put some labels on 

everything and people could come and 

have a look and be excited, however we 

would not be doing the articles or the 

public of the district justice to have a 

slightly ramshackle looking collection in 

another old shed.” 

The volunteers and friends of the project 

had been very committed in raising funds 

through a car raffle, running catering 

at the annual Albie Anderson day in 

Southbridge and numerous other catering 

and sausage sizzle occasions. 

However the main building was not up 

to code, either too hot or cold and too 

damp or dry in humidity to display the 

precious articles collected. Engineered 

plans costing $20,000 to resolve the 

strengthening and encompassing the 

building with the correct cladding to 

create the atmosphere for a museum were 

ready for consent, but it was very difficult 

to raise the estimated $500,000 - $800,000 

to complete the project. 

Submitting for consent gave the group 

a forced timeline to complete the project, 

which the trust board could not guarantee 

without assured funding. 

“Combined with the Ellesmere Historical 

Society, and Ngai Tahu tangata 

whenua, we have the enthusiasm, 

passion, commitment, and the 

drive to see this completed, 

professional project to fruition; 

we just don’t have sufficient 

funds,” council heard.

a horse that took out two 

Dominion Handicaps 

on his way to winning

retirement from the track in 

2017 as an eight-year-old. At 

the time his trainer-driver

extremely well cared for. He

the track he deserves to be 

looked after off the track.”

FRIENDS: Dan Patterson with Kypros Kotzikas, the breeder 

of retired trotter Master Lavros. 

The aspiring vet did know of 

the Sundon gelding’s exploits and 

has since watched many of the 

replays of his greatest races. And 

there are plenty. 

He was a former NZ record 

holder for the mobile 2600m 

at 3:13.1, and as well as his two 

Group One Dominion triumphs, 

he also won the 2014 Rowe Cup, 

and was NZ Trotter Of The Year 

in 2014. 

Patterson says retirement 

certainly appears to be agreeing 

with him. 

“He’s a completely different 

horse now, he’s very relaxed.” 

Patterson’s had the horse for 

about a year now. 

“He was already broken 

into saddle but we’ve learned 

how to canter and trot and 

we’ve done a few jumps, 

though we are working on that, 

we’re only jumping about 40 

centimetres.” 

Just recently the pair entered a 

Have A Go day run by Oamaru 

A&P. The combo was awarded 

Reserve Champion, with three

first placings, one second and two 

fourths. 

And they clearly impressed 

judge Kirstyn Walker – “There 

was just this most incredible 

bond, you could see that Dan and 

the horse loved each other.” 

Competition is not the be all or 

end all for Patterson, though they 

will continue to support local 

events. 

“It’s just fun, we are just as 

happy hacking and trekking 

around or river riding or 

swimming in the dams.” 

It seems that Patterson and 

“Big Red” are for keeps.

THE RED CLOVER casebearer 

moth (Coleophora deauratella) 

was first reported in Auckland in 

2016, but within a year they were 

found in Canterbury. 

Adult moths have shiny, 

metallic, bronze-green coloured 

forewings with a wingspan of 

11-13 mm. 

This moth species originated 

from Europe and the Middle 

East and was accidently 

introduced into North America 

in 1960s where it has become 

a significant pest of red clover 

crops, causing losses of between 

80 and 100 per cent. 

Moths only live for six days 

and are mostly active in New 

Zealand 

from September to February but 

have been observed as early as 

July. 

Adult moths feed on nectar. 

During the adults’ short life they 

mate and females lay white eggs 

on the calyx of florets. 

Larvae hatch and feed on 

reproductive parts including the 

developing seeds of red clover. 

Larvae develop into a redbrown 

colour and are 2-4mm in 

length. 

Larvae make a cigar-like case 

that resembles a clover floret, to 

live in and they use it overwinter.

Time flies: Autumn is just around the corner 

TIRED AFTER a long 

summer’s labour, many 

gardeners don’t realise that 

an autumn garden can be 

stunningly beautiful. 

It’s not too early to be 

thinking of the autumn 

garden, while we have been 

blessed with a hot, dry 

summer, next month signifies 

the start of autumn, trees 

will once again come into 

prominence, showing off rich 

golds, purples and reds. 

Closer to the ground, skilful 

gardeners keep the colour 

coming with well-selected 

shrubs and perennials. 

While doing autumn cleanup, 

don’t be too quick to cut 

down some of your favourite 

plants. 

Those grasses, for example, 

are covered with a heavy frost, 

and sedum flowers will dry 

right on the stalk. 

Experiment by leaving 

certain flowers up during the 

winter months to appreciate 

their sculptural effect. 

At their best in summer, 

warm-season annuals such 

as coleus continue right up 

to the first frost, adding 

bolts of colour into early 

autumn.

types, such as snapdragons 

and pansies, which keep going

CRV still a force to be reckoned with 

HONDA ISN’T going to be left 

out of the main game. 

The mid-size sport utility 

vehicle market is crowded and 

tempting models just keep getting 

added into the mix, Mazda’s new 

CX-30 has just landed, Toyota’s 

RAV4 is ever present and there’s 

a host of others from most 

mainstream manufacturers. 

But Honda keeps ticking away 

with its CRV, and sales of it are 

healthy, which has a lot to do 

with the upgrades that have 

kept it fresh through the years 

and for 2021 there are further 

enhancements and refinements, 

along with a greater emphasis on 

safety across the range. 

This evaluation focuses on 

the five-seater, range-topping 

Sport Premium that also has 

four-wheel-drive mechanicals. 

Interestingly, all CRV models now 

get the 1.5-litre turbocharged 

engine that was only available 

previously in a few select models. 

The naturally-aspirated 2-litre 

engine has been dropped, but 

that’s not a bad thing the 1498cc 

turbo is a beauty in terms of 

refinement and economy, and it 

has power outputs that match the 

concept of CRV. 

Honda has also made some 

engineering alterations to make 

the CRV more driveable, notably 

steering response and stability, 

the latter contributing to a solid, 

secure feel on the road, the 

CRV feels well-attached and 

communicative. 

More importantly, the majority 

of buyers will be interested 

in the user-friendly elements 

that have been built into the 

newcomer. There’s a increased 

focus on family travel and 

what we carry with us, the 

air conditioning system has 

been improved, the USB ports 

up-front are illuminated and 

relocated for convenience and 

are fast charging, while a wireless 

charging pad is now included. 

You’d expect nothing less from 

Honda, it is a people-friendly 

car builder and the CRV’s 

reputation has made it a class 

leader for many years, today it is 

still commanding sales, keeping 

it near the top end of the leader 

board. 

The Sport Premium model has 

all the kit you’d ever need, and 

at $51,000 it is extending to the 

price of premium models but 

it is part of a value range that 

starts at $39,990 and includes 

four choices. In-between there’s 

a Sport 7 (seven seats) at $47,990 

and AWD Touring at $43,990. 

The Sport Premium wants 

for nothing, it has full leather 

with electric front seats (also 

heated), satellite navigation,

keyless entry and ignition, 

electric sunroof, electric tailgate, 

and 19in wheels, just to name 

some of the features that give you 

an indication of where it sits in 

the market. 

Drive is through a sevenstep 

continuously variable 

transmission, the engine and 

gearbox work seamlessly 

together, there is little to hinder 

engine power, and response to 

accelerator request is instant 

and fluid. There’s no suggestion 

of turbo lag anywhere, and 

movement is lively and 

unyielding. 

In terms of performance the 

CRV is rated at 140kW and 

240Nm, the latter figure available 

all of the way from 2000rpm to 

5000rpm almost meeting the 

point of peak power at 5500rpm, 

they are the key ingredients when 

it comes to the constant supply of 

energy. 

The CRVs is responsive and 

will fulfil all driving styles, it’s 

capable when required, easily 

capable of propelling through 

a highway overtake in 6sec, and 

promising a 8.7sec time to reach 

100km/h from a standstill. 

In Sport Premium form there 

are paddle-shifters which will 

offer the driver some input into 

how the CRV gains momentum, 

or for when speed needs to be

to enhance engine braking when 

slowing for a corner or a long 

descent through the hills. 

The CRV is also a well-handling 

SUV, it feels encouraging from 

behind the wheel. That’s the 

benefit of what all-wheel-drive is 

all about, even though the CRV 

is effectively a front-driver, power 

is directed rearwards if grip is 

threatened or sensors dictate that 

power rearwards is demanded. 

As well as my usual highway 

loop, I took the test car on a 

challenging incline and enjoyed 

its directional accuracy and feel 

in a corner. A lot of that has 

to do with the big wheels and 

new steering settings, it is quite 

noticeable, information is relayed 

back willingly to the steering 

wheel. 

Nothing has been 

compromised in the area where 

Honda excels as a car maker – 

fuel usage. 

The CRV is rated with a 

7.4l/100km combined cycle 

average, that’s one of the benefits 

of having small displacement 

engines, and the turbocharging 

technique doesn’t jeopardise the 

way we look at economy in this 

age where fickle prices could soar 

at any time. 

During my time with the 

test car it was constantly listing 

an 8.1/100km average with 

5l/100km showing on the readout 

at a steady 100km/h, the engine 

largely unstressed working over at 

just 1900rpm. 

Not only has Honda kept the 

CRV fresh mechanically, it has 

specification levels that will 

constantly tempt, there’s also 

a refresh cosmetically just to 

keep up with modern design 

trends. The latter aren’t quite so 

noticeable but they do enhance 

appeal. 

That’s something Honda has 

been doing for 23 years with 

CRV, and it’s a formula that has 

been very successful and serves to 

prove that ideas and technology 

just keep advancing. Today’s CRV 

is state-of the art, and represents 

all that a family car buyer would 

want.
