Festive
season
shoppers
good for
retailers
• By Bea Gooding
A SHOPPING boom in Spreydon
during the festive season made
it one of the suburbs with the
largest retail spending increase
across the city.
A report by economic development
agency, ChristchurchNZ,
revealed spending in December
shot up four per cent city-wide,
and nine per cent in the city
centre, compared to data from the
same month in 2019.
Along with a 10 per cent
increase in Spreydon, Lyttelton
and Papanui also had the largest
growth in spending.
The growth follows a tough
financial year for the city with
the absence of international tourists,
a lockdown, and alert level
changes.
It was a busy month at Anderson
& Hill Sports Power,
Barrington Shopping Centre said
owner Mark Carter.
“December was a lot busier
compared to the year before, so
it’s been great to catch up,” he
said.
Interest in Mexican restaurant rises
• By Bea Gooding
EXCITEMENT IS building in
Linwood as residents anticipate
the opening of the city’s very first
Taco Bell restaurant in the area.
Construction of the $1.3m
Mexican-inspired fast food
restaurant at the Eastgate Mall
site started last month and is set
to open later this year.
Linwood resident Simon Fisher
was walking to Subway with
his son Shane when he shared
his excitement for the suburb’s
newest addition.
He could not wait to start
tucking into their fresh tacos,
salads and desserts.
“It’s great, I’ve always wanted a
Taco Bell in Christchurch. I used
to live in Australia and we had
lots of Taco Bells.”
New Brighton resident Linda
Rowlinson, who was waiting for
a bus outside Eastgate, regularly
visits the area. She likes Mexican
food, so having a new option in
Linwood was something to look
forward to.
“I think it’s great. I’m up here
shopping all the time; I live
in New Brighton and there’s
nothing there so we’ve got to
come up here,” she said.
She believes the area has been
targeted for these types of outlets
but was not concerned because
“people should have a variety.”
Jacob Chatterton, of Linwood,
is looking forward to the
prospect of getting a job
at the restaurant more
than eating its food.
“I’ve never had Taco
Bell. But if I don’t have a
job by then, I’ll definitely
apply to work there.
“I think everyone
around here will like it
more, and it means less
people at McDonald’s and KFC.
The only thing healthy for a
Jacob
Chatterton
takeaway here is the Subway.”
But its proximity to other
outlets has caused some concern.
It joins a group of
restaurants within 200m
of Linwood Avenue
School, including KFC,
McDonald’s, Burger
King and Domino’s
pizza, with other options
inside Eastgate Mall.
Said principal
Gretchen Smith: “For
us as a school, we have
constant temptation at the gate,
fuelled by the power of the
brand, and the aroma of fast
food wafting over the school
on a daily basis, which can be
appetising or nauseating.”
THe school was not consulted
on the matter seeing as the area
is a commercial zone.
Starting this year, the school
will supply lunch every day
as part of the Ministry of
Education’s “lunch in school”
programme, to help pupils meet
their nutritional needs.
“THe big brands that target
this area will, of course, say
that they are just meeting the
demands of the local community
and that they offer healthy
alternatives such as salad and
water, or that they give back to
the community.”
THe Linwood location will
be the third restaurant in the
country, with the other two
outlets opening in Auckland last
year.
It is best known for its tacos,
burritos, quesadillas and frozen
margaritas.
THe outlet is owned by
Restaurant Brands, which has
rights to brands in New Zealand
such as KFC, Pizza Hut, Carl’s Jr
and Starbucks.
It is not the first time concerns
regarding the proliferation of fast
food restaurants in Linwood has
been raised.
In 2016, a petition was
presented to the city council to
ban fast food restaurants within
800m of schools.
But residents have yet to see
action as the city council said
it was not able to change the
district plan to regulate fast food
until this year.
your view on another fast
food outlet in the area?
Cancer Society shuttle service gets boost
THE CANCER Society’s
Canterbury West Coast division
shuttle service received a boost
recently with a combined
donation of almost $13,000 from
23 South Island-based Lions
clubs.
THe free shuttle service
transports patients staying
in the Cancer Society’s
accommodation, Daffodil
House in Merivale and Daffodil
Lodge in Riccarton, to and from
radiation and chemotherapy
appointments at Christchurch
Hospital.
Janice Porter-Hoare,
fundraising and events manager
for the Cancer Society’s CWC
division, said that the Lions
Clubs’ significant donation was
a huge help towards funding the
$65,000 required to operate the
shuttle each year.
“The shuttle currently operates
from 7.30am until 9pm Monday
to Friday, which translates to
approximately 16,000 individual
patient trips. Given that the
patients we are providing our
service for, come from all over
the South Island it is fabulous
to see local Lions Clubs from a
variety of regions supporting
this Christchurch-based service,”
Porter-Hoare said.
Porter-Hoare acknowledged
that this was the fourth
consecutive year that the Lions
Clubs had donated to the shuttle
service.
“The late John Cramond from
Motueka organised the first
donation in 2017 after having
used the shuttle service himself
while having cancer treatment
in Christchurch,” Porter-Hoare
said.
“Sadly John passed away last
year, but his legacy lives on in
this donation, which is extremely
important to us given that we
anticipate the demand for the
shuttle service to grow even
further during 2021.”
Lions Club representative
Christine Stewart, 1st Vice
District Governor for District
202J, visited Daffodil House to
see the shuttle service in action
and accepted a certificate of
thanks from the Cancer Society
on behalf of the contributing
Lions Clubs.
In addition to providing
accommodation and transport
services, the Cancer Society
provides education and support
services for cancer patients and
their families, as well as coordinating
and funding cancer
research.
As the society receives no
direct government or health
the society to help
fund the free shuttle
service.
Yacht club celebrates 100 years
PLEASANT POINT Yacht
Club celebrates its centennial
this weekend.
The club, now based in South
New Brighton Park, began in
1921 on the shores of the estuary
just behind where the South
New Brighton School is today.
The area was then known as
Pleasant Point Domain.
In 1929 the club moved across
to the western shore to an area
of mud flats at the mouth of the
Avon River that would become
known as Rat Island.
Over the years, the club built
up and improved the land
together with the club facilities
and held summer sailing and
racing programmes, teaching
hundreds of children and
adults how to sail. That was
until the first of the Canterbury
earthquakes on September 4,
2010 damaged the buildings
and land beyond repair.
In the 10 years since, it
found a new site and has built
a new yacht club (opened in
September 2019) in South New
Brighton Park – just a stone’s
throw from where it all began
in 1921.
The centennial celebrations
will provide a great opportunity
to relive the highs and lows of
the club’s 100 years, especially
the last 10 years of the rebuild.
The celebrations kick off with
a noggin ‘n natter on Friday
night, on Saturday, the Sullivan
Cup, which is the club’s main
open event, will be sailed, coupled
with another major trophy,
the Arch Lamb trophy for the
Sunburst class.
The races will feature multihulls,
trailer yachts and senior
and junior racing dingy classes
and are open to other yacht club
members.
Saturday’s sailing will be followed
by a celebration dinner.
On Sunday, the club will
run its Classic Yacht Race,
first sailed at the club’s 75th
celebrations. This will be
coupled with a display of classic
boats of all types owned by
members of the Classic Boat
Group of Canterbury. There will
be plenty for the public to see
on Saturday and Sunday.
For more information, phone
Ian Douglas on 027 4719 208.
Business owner
confident for
the year ahead
• From page 1
Carter said his business did not
suffer greatly during the pandemic,
aside from reduced sales during
the level 4 lockdown.
But following the lockdown,
demand had been picking up again
to the point where they were able
to catch up in sales.
Carter was feeling confident
for the year ahead in spite of the
difficulties many businesses will
face this year as a result of the
pandemic.
“A lot of people in Christchurch
haven’t been travelling and spending
their money so we’ve been a lot
busier,” Carter said.
The report said popular items on
the shopping list included apparel,
home and recreational goods,
personal items, groceries, and
alcohol.
However, fuel and automotive
spending decreased by five per cent
– a trend in recent years following
a push for residents to use alternative
transport.
Spending on clothing and personal
items saw the greatest growth
in December.
“Across the city, retail spending
was robust in December 2020
as consumers prepared for
Christmas,” the ChristchurchNZ
report said.

Perfect job for an interest in nature
Dean Pendrigh is the
collections curator for
the water garden, azalea
garden and the pinetum in
the Botanic Gardens and
has been working there for
the past 35 years. He talks
to Ella Somers
A PASSION for nature led Dean
Pendrigh to pursue a botanical
career immediately after high
school and he started his
four-year apprenticeship at the
Botanic Gardens in 1986.
His apprenticeship included a
brief scholarship to Melbourne,
on his return he continued working
at the gardens.
Pendrigh said he has “always
had an interest in nature” but it
wasn’t until high school when his
uncle introduced him to orchids
that “really got me interested in
plants and native plants as well.”
He enjoys botanical work because
every season is different and
“something will be far better one
year and not the other,” he said.
“I like the biogeography and
learning about where plants
come from and how plants react
to other plants and in different
countries.”
As well as maintaining the
collections and keeping careful
DID YOU know that the three
small Islands in McCormacks Bay
Reserve (inland of the causeway
and at the base of Mt Pleasant)
have official names?
In 1993 plans by the city council
were implemented to improve
the habitat for wildlife. Native
trees and shrubs were planted,
and three islands constructed
to provide safe areas for birds to
roost.
The city council agreed to allow
the then Sumner-based environment
group Friends of the Estuary
to organise a name the islands
competition.
As a result the islands are now
plant records, a large part of Pendrigh’s
job includes tasks such as
weeding, pruning, and cutting
hedges.
Watering takes up a lot of time
as well because “a lot of my areas
don’t have any actual automated
irrigation so we do it by hand,”
he said.
Due to the names of plants
changing frequently, updating
and labelling records is a
continual project and can be
frustrating.
“You get to know the name of
a plant and then a botanist will
change it,” Pendrigh said.
“Sometimes you’ll change a
label and then they’ll change it
back to the original name.”
Pendrigh said that while he
gets a lot of good comments
from people who come through
the garden, “a lot of people
don’t realise how much work is
involved,” he said.
ESTUARY MATTERS
The Avon-Heathcote Estuary Ihutai Trust is a
non-profit organisation formed to protect one of
New Zealand’s most important coastal wetlands.
Each week, board members will discuss matters
regarding the estuary, its rich history and what
makes it unique. This week Tanya Jenkins writes
about the islands in McCormacks Bay
called Torea Island, which is the
Maori name for a commonly
found estuary bird the oystercatchers;
Rescue Island, for the
role it plays in preventing bird
decline by providing a safe area
for birds to roost; and Geoffrey de
Thier Island, to pay tribute to the
late de Thier who was a founding
member of the now defunct
Combined Estuary Association.
He was a major player in saving
McCormacks Bay from being
filled in which was being considered
in the 80s.
Six years ago, the Avon-Heathcote
Estuary Ihutai Trust collaborated
with city council park
SKILLED:
Dean
Pendrigh
tends to
the plants
in the
Botanic
Gardens.
He has
always had
an interest
in nature.
In comparison to other trades
as well, it’s not recognised as
much as it should be.
“There is a lot of knowledge
that you need to know, and it
takes a long time to build up that
knowledge, especially that plant
knowledge,” he said.
“The names of plants you have
to learn as well, it’s like learning
another language.”
Pendrigh’s passion for
“everything botanical” has
ranger Andrew Crossland and
as a result developed a plan to
further improve the bay, providing
birds with sedges planted in
the mud to safely hide amongst
while feeding.
A group of local residents,
Ferrymead Rotary and trust
members under the supervision
inspired him to travel to
places across the world where
interesting flora lives, including
Africa.
“They’ve got a very diverse
flora,” he said.
“It increased my interest in
plants even more seeing them in
their natural habitat.”
He doesn’t have a favourite
plant but if he had to name his
favourite plant group, it would be
plants from the southern hemisphere,
New Zealand, Australia,
and South Africa in particular.
“There’s some interesting links
between the floras of those countries,”
Pendrigh said.
“And because I’ve seen them in
the wild, you appreciate them a
lot more.”
One of the most interesting
visitors that the Botanic Gardens
has had in Pendrigh’s time was
a visit from the Dalai Lama in
1992.
“He planted a himalayan pine
tree in my area,” Pendrigh said.
Unfortunately, the tree was
stolen a week after it was planted
and neither the thief nor the
Dalai Lama’s tree were ever
found.
The tree that now grows where
the Dalai Lama’s one used to be
“is one that I actually planted,”
Pendrigh said.
Work continues to improve habitat for wildlife
of park ranger Matt Rose meet
every third Sunday afternoon of
each month between 2-4pm.
The groups weed, plant, mulch,
prune, water plants and collect
litter receive updates from Matt
and share afternoon tea.
As a reward for these working
sessions more birds can be spotted
in and around McCormacks
Bay than ever before.
Spoonbills are seen regularly on
the islands, increased numbers
of white-faced herons, pied stilts
and kingfishers have shown the
success when city council and
communities work together.
Quake exhibition a chance to reflect
• By Samantha Mythen
TEN YEARS after the February
22, 2011, earthquake devastated
Mt Pleasant, the community is
curating an exhibition to reflect
and remember.
Made up of their own stories,
photographs and artwork, the
exhibition
will reflect
Mt Pleasant
locals’ experience
of the
earthquake.
Linda
Rutland, a
resident of
Linda Rutland
27 years,
was president
of the Mt Pleasant Memorial
Community Centre & Residents
Association in 2011. Rutland was
in charge of their earthquake
recovery co-ordination and is
helping organise the exhibition.
“We are hosting the exhibition
to help the community take
stock of what happened at the
time and reflect on the recovery
over the years. It’s also important
to remember the residents in our
local area who died,’’ she said.
“It will bring all of our individual
stories together to present the
whole picture of how important
community is.”
The exhibition will be held
at the Mt Pleasant Community
Centre during the weekend of
February 20 and 21.
Tony Aldridge is one exhibitor.
He has walked around the area,
mapping what houses were
demolished, then rebuilt and
who has moved back over the
years.
He was inspired to start the
survey, firstly by the inconsistencies
between reports from the
Government saying there would
be a quick recovery and the reality
on the ground.
He also saw a statement made
by Rutland in the media that one
third of houses would have to be
rebuilt in Mt Pleasant. Disbelieving
it would be that high, he
then decided to set forth into the
streets of Mt Pleasant to find out
for himself.
DISASTER: The original Mt Pleasant Memorial Community Centre after February 22,
2011, earthquake. It was significantly damaged and has since been replaced with a new
building.
PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN
After surveying the 1700
residences, he realised Rutland’s
estimate was about right.
“After 10 years, Linda was
only a couple of percentages out.
She was far more accurate than
anything reported by the Government,”
Aldridge said.
Aldridge hopes that the exhibition
will become an archive of
lessons for the future.
“We lacked knowledge of how
to cope in a disaster such as the
earthquake and the recovery
afterwards. I’m hoping we have
learned something for the future
when a big disaster occurs
again.”
Mt Pleasant was located
close to the epicentre and
situated directly along the fault
line which meant the quake
caused extensive damage to the
area.
Rock fall, landslides and
tension cracks along Mt
Pleasant’s tussock covered cliffs
SIGNIFICANT:
Damage on
Main Rd after
the February
22, 2011,
earthquake.
meant many houses in the area
had to be evacuated.
Sewer pipes were broken,
the area saw large amounts of
liquefaction, and residences were
without electricity and water
services for a week.
In spite of the ongoing
dangers to residents, there was
a significant
increase in
community
spirit. The
community
centre was
destroyed
and as it was
Tony Aldridge
owned by
the resident
association,
they had to fundraise for its
rebuild themselves.
Said Rutland: “The earthquake
was absolutely dreadful and it
woke our community up making
us realise that we depend on
each other.”
She senses this community
has begun to weaken and is hoping
the exhibition will remind
people how important a strong
community is for resilience,
especially to cope with potential
future disasters.
They are hoping at least 100
people will submit their story
ensuring the exhibition can be
a rich and full account of what
happened.
Marty Henderson, who
was chairman of the Mt
Pleasant School board of trustees
during the earthquake and
recovery, is helping to involve
the school and its students in the
exhibition.
The residents’ association
is currently calling for more
submissions from local
residents. You can submit
photos of house or street/area
damage, personal stories, poetry
or artwork related to your
earthquake experience.
