GARDENING
Today’s winning question came from
Rachel Pharazyn. Congratulations!
Q
Each year we dismantle our frame
pool and are left with a big circular,
smelly patch where there was once
a luscious lawn! What would you
recommend we do to nurse our
lawn back to full health as soon as possible?
A
It would be worth considering shifting
the pool to a different part of the
garden each year. This would allow
the grass to recover over a longer
period of time.
March is an excellent month for renovating existing lawns as it is getting
cooler and rainfall is more reliable. To repair your lawn, it is necessary to
remove all the old rotting grass. Apply some quality, weed-free topsoil
like Daltons Premium Lawn Soil, and cover the entire area to a
depth of 50 millimetres. Compact the soil and then sow with fresh
grass seed. Use a mixture of grass species as this will create a
more durable, all-year-round lawn.
After germination, over-sow areas where the seed has not taken,
using the same lawn seed. Continue to irrigate the new lawn if
rainfall, is insuffi cient.
When the newly emerged grass has reached 80mm high the fi rst cut
can be made. With successive cuts, you can lower the mowers setting
to eventually reach the grass height you desire. We highly recommend
reading our free How to Grow Lawns Guide which includes more advice on
growing lawns from our experts: www.daltons.co.nz/how-to-guides.
