WELCOME<br />
I would like to welcome you to Warrington & Vale Royal College’s <strong>Winsford</strong> campus; we are all<br />
really excited that you are considering studying with us.<br />
These past months have been testing for all of us everywhere in the event of the Coronavirus.<br />
I want to take this opportunity to assure you that we have put everything in place to provide<br />
you all with as smooth and safe a time as possible with us so that your studies will continue<br />
with the minimum of disruption and the maximum of support. We want each and every one of<br />
you to enjoy the huge number of opportunities that we have here at the college so that you<br />
can thrive, progress and realise your potential.<br />
I am immensely proud of what the college has achieved in the five years I have served as<br />
principal. In October 2019, we secured a ‘Good’ rating in our Ofsted inspection; a testament<br />
to the hard work our dedicated staff put into the learning and care of every single student in<br />
the college.<br />
Our new Advanced Manufacturing & Engineering Training (AMET) Centre at <strong>Winsford</strong><br />
campus has recently received an investment of £656,000 from the Cheshire and Warrington<br />
Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), and contains industry-standard engineering equipment<br />
including CNC machines, plasma cutting tables, VR welding machines and programmable<br />
robotic equipment. The quality of equipment and teaching offered at the AMET Centre will<br />
ensure that our engineering and electrical students are immersed in a first-rate learning<br />
environment and leave us ready to embark upon a successful career in the industry.<br />
We have the teaching talent and the best learning resources to deliver a challenging,<br />
diverse and stimulating study programme to suit every students’ individual needs<br />
and interests.<br />

Our friendly <strong>Winsford</strong> campus is located within walking distance of <strong>Winsford</strong> town centre and<br />
offers a welcoming and supportive environment similar to that of a sixth form college.<br />
As a student at <strong>Winsford</strong> campus, you can study in our fully-equipped Learning Resource<br />
Centre, which houses over 50 PCs, including Apple Macs. You can also take out a laptop on<br />
day loan and access thousands of e-resources.<br />
The campus features specialist workshops containing industry equipment of the highest<br />
standard, allowing our students to learn in a real working environment.<br />
AMET CENTRE<br />
We are excited to announce the launch of our new AMET Centre which houses<br />
industry-standard engineering equipment including hydraulics, robotics, pneumatics, PLCs<br />
(programmable logic controllers) and metallurgy fault finding equipment.<br />
The facilities and curriculum have been developed in close collaboration with local employers<br />
from the manufacturing and engineering sectors.<br />
Our AMET centres will house state-of-the-art equipment to support the skills required for<br />
smarter manufacturing techniques. They will become a specialist hub for the manufacturing<br />
and engineering industries using Industrial Digital Technologies such as robotics, industrial<br />
control and digital intelligence. They will serve the region as specialist centres for materials<br />
measurement, testing and analysis and enhance the provision of digital and manufacturing<br />
skills training across Cheshire and Warrington.<br />

Pastoral support<br />
At Warrington & Vale Royal College student support comes<br />
first. Every student is allocated a Progress Coach and a<br />
Senior Tutor who will continuously monitor your progress<br />
and offer advice and guidance. This might be through oneto-one<br />
sessions, group tutorials, monitoring attendance and<br />
performance, and helping to prepare you for your next steps<br />
in education or employment.<br />
All of our students will also take part in the ‘You’ tutorial<br />
programme, which aims to support your personal and<br />
social development. Guest speakers from universities and<br />
companies such as Cheshire Police and the National Health<br />
Service (NHS) will come into college to deliver talks on a<br />
whole host of topics including mental health, careers, UCAS,<br />
drive safe, volunteering and British Values.<br />
Bursary support<br />
You may be eligible to access financial support from our<br />
Learner Support Fund, which is available to eligible students<br />
to support with associated costs of their course. This fund<br />
is means tested and will be calculated depending on your<br />
annual household income.<br />

Welfare Team<br />
Your well-being at college is very important to us. That is<br />
why we have a dedicated Welfare Team of highly-trained and<br />
experienced Welfare Advisers.<br />
The Welfare Team work closely with the Progress Coaches<br />
and the Senior Tutors to help you overcome any issues<br />
affecting your well-being. They can provide support and<br />
advice on a huge range of issues including health, welfare,<br />
financial worries, personal issues, and mental well-being.<br />
Safeguarding<br />
We are committed to ensuring all of our students are able to<br />
attend activities in college in a safe and secure environment.<br />
As well as dedicated Safeguarding Officers, all the college<br />
staff are trained in safeguarding practices, ensuring we follow<br />
strict policies and procedures designed to protect you.<br />
If you are concerned about your own safety or the safety<br />
of another student, please speak to your Progress Coach,<br />
Tutor, a Welfare Adviser in Learner Services or a college<br />
Safeguarding Officer.

sought-after skills, then a vocational course is an ideal choice.<br />
If you do not achieve a grade 4 or above in your GCSE English<br />
and/or Maths at school, we can help you achieve it at college<br />
with the help of our specialist tutors.<br />
You will be allocated slots in your weekly timetable to study<br />
for your GCSE English and/or Maths alongside your<br />
vocational studies.<br />

If you would love to work with children and make a real difference<br />
to their lives, Childcare could be the ideal course for you. Our<br />
Childcare courses will equip you with all the skills you need to<br />
begin a career in this rewarding sector.<br />
Level 2 Childcare<br />
A one-year course which is highly practical and focuses on<br />
building experience through work placements. Modules include:<br />
the roles and responsibilities of the Early Years Practitioner,<br />
safeguarding, health & safety, and promoting play.<br />
Level 3 Childcare<br />
A two-year course which will strengthen your skills and give<br />
you a real insight into the working practices and expectations<br />
of a childcare practitioner. You will cover a range of modules<br />

Pennie Barrow<br />
Childcare and Health & Social Care<br />
tutor Pennie Barrow has an impressive<br />
background of teaching and industry<br />

Pennie began her career working in a pre-school before<br />
moving on to become Supervisor in a family centre and<br />
Manager in a day nursery. Pennie has been teaching for 16<br />
years and enjoys sharing her knowledge with her students.
CREATIVE & DIGITAL MEDIA<br />
Our dynamic Creative & Digital Media courses are ideal for<br />
students aiming to pursue a career within the fast-paced digital<br />
media industry. Students will develop specific practical skills as<br />
well as learning all about the industry and professional practice.<br />
Level 2 Graphics & Media<br />
A one-year course which will develop your technical skills and<br />
introduce you to this ever-changing industry. As part of your<br />
learning experience you will participate in a range of exciting<br />

If you are a practical learner aiming to work with the latest technology<br />

perfect for you. These hands-on courses are designed to equip you<br />

Level 1 Electrical Installation<br />
A one-year course designed to teach you the basic practical<br />
elements and theoretical elements of Electrical Installation.<br />
Modules include: fundamental safe working practices, site<br />

Nick Anderson<br />
Electrical Installation tutor Nick<br />
Anderson has a wealth of knowledge<br />
to share with his students, having<br />
worked as an electrician all over the<br />
world in countries such as Germany and America. Nick<br />
has been teaching for almost 20 years and allows his vast<br />
international industry experience to enhance his teaching.<br />
Nick has also recently been appointed as the new <strong>Campus</strong><br />
Manager for the <strong>Winsford</strong> campus, and was delighted<br />
to see the introduction of the new AMET Centre. He is<br />
incredibly proud of the high-quality learning environment<br />
that the campus offers, and is greatly looking forward to<br />
welcoming the next wave of new students this September.
ENGINEERING<br />
If you aim to develop your practical and theoretical knowledge in<br />
preparation for a career as an Engineer, our high-tech courses<br />
could be ideal for you. Working in our state-of-the-art workshops,<br />
you will learn from our skilled tutors and have access to the latest<br />
engineering equipment.<br />
Level 2 Mechanical<br />
Engineering (PEO)<br />
A one-year course which is highly practical and designed for<br />
students wanting to start working as electrical/mechanical<br />
engineers. Modules include: electrical wiring and testing, hand<br />
fitting techniques, milling and turning, using technical information,<br />
and fixing machinery.<br />
VOCATIONAL COURSES - ENGINEERING<br />
Level 3 General Engineering<br />
A two-year course which is more theory based, covering subjects<br />
such as: reading engineering drawings, mechanical technology,<br />
science for engineering, computer aided design (CAD),<br />
mathematics, further mathematics and engineering projects.<br />
This course is for those who would like to focus on the major<br />
engineering disciplines, giving you the knowledge and practical<br />
skills to develop as an engineer.<br />
Note: To study Level 3 General Engineering you must have<br />
achieved a grade 4 in GCSE Science.<br />

a wealth of industry experience, having<br />
worked as a design and project engineer<br />

This unique study programme is ideal if you feel you need time and<br />

Sarah teaches students of all ages and delivers a wide<br />

& Social Development and Vocational Studies. She also<br />
teaches catering and customer service in the Atrium<br />
Kitchen at our <strong>Winsford</strong> campus. Sarah thoroughly enjoys<br />

GRAPHIC DESIGN<br />
Do you like the sound of combining your creative skills with your<br />
tech knowledge? Then this course is ideal for you! Our Graphic<br />
Design courses will develop your creativity and knowledge of<br />
specialist design software, allowing you to flourish in this<br />
vibrant industry.<br />
Level 2 Graphics & Media<br />
A one-year course focused on delivering the core knowledge<br />
and skills that every graphic designer will need to work in the<br />
creative industries. Students will be taught how to generate<br />
and develop ideas, as well as learning how to use Adobe<br />

VOCATIONAL COURSES - GRAPHIC DESIGN<br />
A two-year course ideal for students who have previously<br />
studied Art & Design, IT, Design Technology, and Media, and<br />

subject area. The course is for anyone who is creatively<br />
minded and is interested in digital design and marketing.<br />
The course allows students to cover a wide range of areas<br />
within graphic design with projects that cover packaging<br />

Ellie Strowger, our subject leader for<br />
graphics and media, has been teaching<br />
on the Graphic Design courses at the<br />
college for the past five years. Ellie<br />
has experience working on a wide range of commercial<br />
graphic design projects for various clients across the UK,<br />
from branding and corporate identity to packaging design.<br />
Ellie loves teaching at the college and sharing her passion<br />
for graphic design. With her industry knowledge and<br />
experience, Ellie guides her students through the design<br />
process and shares the fundamental skills needed within<br />
the creative industries.<br />

years, following her career in nursing<br />

for those who don’t, the matching service is here to help.<br />
We will help you develop your CV, ready to send to<br />
employers when suitable positions become available. Our<br />
talented team have a huge range of employers they are in<br />
communication with, giving you the best chance to find your<br />

Entry Requirements<br />
Entry requirements vary depending on your apprenticeship<br />
level. It is certainly advantageous to have a minimum of<br />
grade 4 in English and Maths, although in most cases this<br />
is not essential.<br />
If you have not already achieved a grade 4 in English<br />
and Maths, you will need to study these as part of your<br />
apprenticeship. Please speak to the Apprenticeship<br />

APPRENTICESHIPS AT WINSFORD CAMPUS:<br />
Level 3 Business Administration<br />
As an apprentice, you will gain a highly transferable set of knowledge, skills and behaviours which can be applied to a huge<br />
variety of job roles. You could work in a range of organisations in the public, private or charitable sectors. As a Business<br />
Administration Apprentice, your duties will include: supporting senior employees, maintaining records, arranging meetings,<br />
typing up documents and liaising with internal and external stakeholders.<br />
Level 2 Customer Service Practitioner<br />
As a Customer Service Apprentice you may work in any sector or organisation and will develop a strong product knowledge<br />
as well as high-quality customer service skills. Modules include: communication, conflict and challenge, teamwork, customer<br />
experience and personal organisation.<br />
Level 3 Electrical Installation<br />
During this apprenticeship you will gain valuable practical experience by undertaking varied tasks and working with a range of<br />
equipment. You will develop skills in diagnosis and fault-finding, communication, problem solving, and quality assurance.<br />
Level 2 Engineering Operative<br />
As an Engineering Operative Apprentice you will gain a range of sought-after skills which can be applied to various manufacturing<br />
engineering sectors. You will cover a range of modules including fitting and assembly techniques, quality checking, electrical and<br />
electronic assembly and testing, and mechanical manufacturing techniques.<br />
Level 3 Engineering Operative (Machinist)<br />
This apprenticeship involves highly skilled, complex and precision work. You will learn how to set up, operate and adjust a range<br />
of equipment settings. Modules include: preparing and using CNC machines and milling machines, advanced turning techniques,<br />
and properties and applications of engineering materials.<br />

Level 3 Engineering Technician (Technical Support Technician)<br />
Throughout this apprenticeship you will learn how to provide technical support and expertise for a range of areas within<br />
engineering and manufacturing. The apprenticeship involves various modules such as reading engineering data, practical<br />
problem solving, diagnostics and testing, and complying with regulations.<br />
Level 3 Maintenance & Operations Engineering Technician (MOET)<br />
Throughout this apprenticeship you will learn to maintain plant and equipment in industries that are part of the national<br />
infrastructure engineering sector, such as electricity generating, oil and gas refining, and pharmaceuticals. You will also develop<br />
skills in communication, inspection and maintenance, fault rectification, and assessing and testing equipment.<br />

Getting to our <strong>Winsford</strong> campus couldn’t be easier!<br />
If you live more than one mile away from <strong>Winsford</strong> campus you are entitled to a FREE Arriva<br />
bus pass.* As well as travelling to college you can also use your bus pass in the evenings and at<br />
weekends! Many of our students even use their bus pass to travel to their part-time jobs or work<br />
experience placements in the local area.<br />
For students who will be cycling or driving we have plenty of bike racks and parking spaces<br />
available. If you are coming to us by train our <strong>Winsford</strong> campus is a 20-minute walk away from<br />
<strong>Winsford</strong> Station on the West Coast Main Line.<br />

We also offer a FREE shuttle from <strong>Winsford</strong> to Warrington campus. Our bus service arrives at college in time for students to<br />
