WELCOME
I would like to welcome you to Warrington & Vale Royal College’s Winsford campus; we are all
really excited that you are considering studying with us.
These past months have been testing for all of us everywhere in the event of the Coronavirus.
I want to take this opportunity to assure you that we have put everything in place to provide
you all with as smooth and safe a time as possible with us so that your studies will continue
with the minimum of disruption and the maximum of support. We want each and every one of
you to enjoy the huge number of opportunities that we have here at the college so that you
can thrive, progress and realise your potential.
I am immensely proud of what the college has achieved in the five years I have served as
principal. In October 2019, we secured a ‘Good’ rating in our Ofsted inspection; a testament
to the hard work our dedicated staff put into the learning and care of every single student in
the college.
Our new Advanced Manufacturing & Engineering Training (AMET) Centre at Winsford
campus has recently received an investment of £656,000 from the Cheshire and Warrington
Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), and contains industry-standard engineering equipment
including CNC machines, plasma cutting tables, VR welding machines and programmable
robotic equipment. The quality of equipment and teaching offered at the AMET Centre will
ensure that our engineering and electrical students are immersed in a first-rate learning
environment and leave us ready to embark upon a successful career in the industry.
We have the teaching talent and the best learning resources to deliver a challenging,
diverse and stimulating study programme to suit every students’ individual needs
and interests.

AMET CENTRE - WINSFORD CAMPUS
WINSFORD CAMPUS
Our friendly Winsford campus is located within walking distance of Winsford town centre and
offers a welcoming and supportive environment similar to that of a sixth form college.
As a student at Winsford campus, you can study in our fully-equipped Learning Resource
Centre, which houses over 50 PCs, including Apple Macs. You can also take out a laptop on
day loan and access thousands of e-resources.
The campus features specialist workshops containing industry equipment of the highest
standard, allowing our students to learn in a real working environment.
AMET CENTRE
We are excited to announce the launch of our new AMET Centre which houses
industry-standard engineering equipment including hydraulics, robotics, pneumatics, PLCs
(programmable logic controllers) and metallurgy fault finding equipment.
The facilities and curriculum have been developed in close collaboration with local employers
from the manufacturing and engineering sectors.
Our AMET centres will house state-of-the-art equipment to support the skills required for
smarter manufacturing techniques. They will become a specialist hub for the manufacturing
and engineering industries using Industrial Digital Technologies such as robotics, industrial
control and digital intelligence. They will serve the region as specialist centres for materials
measurement, testing and analysis and enhance the provision of digital and manufacturing
skills training across Cheshire and Warrington.

Pastoral support
At Warrington & Vale Royal College student support comes
first. Every student is allocated a Progress Coach and a
Senior Tutor who will continuously monitor your progress
and offer advice and guidance. This might be through oneto-one
sessions, group tutorials, monitoring attendance and
performance, and helping to prepare you for your next steps
in education or employment.
All of our students will also take part in the ‘You’ tutorial
programme, which aims to support your personal and
social development. Guest speakers from universities and
companies such as Cheshire Police and the National Health
Service (NHS) will come into college to deliver talks on a
whole host of topics including mental health, careers, UCAS,
drive safe, volunteering and British Values.
Bursary support
You may be eligible to access financial support from our
Learner Support Fund, which is available to eligible students
to support with associated costs of their course. This fund
is means tested and will be calculated depending on your
annual household income.

into Learner Services.
Welfare Team
Your well-being at college is very important to us. That is
why we have a dedicated Welfare Team of highly-trained and
experienced Welfare Advisers.
The Welfare Team work closely with the Progress Coaches
and the Senior Tutors to help you overcome any issues
affecting your well-being. They can provide support and
advice on a huge range of issues including health, welfare,
financial worries, personal issues, and mental well-being.
Safeguarding
We are committed to ensuring all of our students are able to
attend activities in college in a safe and secure environment.
As well as dedicated Safeguarding Officers, all the college
staff are trained in safeguarding practices, ensuring we follow
strict policies and procedures designed to protect you.
If you are concerned about your own safety or the safety
of another student, please speak to your Progress Coach,
Tutor, a Welfare Adviser in Learner Services or a college
Safeguarding Officer.

full-time courses designed to lead you

FULL-TIME COURSES
If you enjoy learning in a practical way and want to gain
sought-after skills, then a vocational course is an ideal choice.
If you do not achieve a grade 4 or above in your GCSE English
and/or Maths at school, we can help you achieve it at college
with the help of our specialist tutors.
You will be allocated slots in your weekly timetable to study
for your GCSE English and/or Maths alongside your
vocational studies.

CHILDCARE
If you would love to work with children and make a real difference
to their lives, Childcare could be the ideal course for you. Our
Childcare courses will equip you with all the skills you need to
begin a career in this rewarding sector.
Level 2 Childcare
A one-year course which is highly practical and focuses on
building experience through work placements. Modules include:
the roles and responsibilities of the Early Years Practitioner,
safeguarding, health & safety, and promoting play.
Level 3 Childcare
A two-year course which will strengthen your skills and give
you a real insight into the working practices and expectations
of a childcare practitioner. You will cover a range of modules
including observation, planning and assessment, child health
and development, and international perspectives in education.

Pennie Barrow
Childcare and Health & Social Care
tutor Pennie Barrow has an impressive
background of teaching and industry
experience.
Pennie began her career working in a pre-school before
moving on to become Supervisor in a family centre and
Manager in a day nursery. Pennie has been teaching for 16
years and enjoys sharing her knowledge with her students.

CREATIVE & DIGITAL MEDIA
Our dynamic Creative & Digital Media courses are ideal for
students aiming to pursue a career within the fast-paced digital
media industry. Students will develop specific practical skills as
well as learning all about the industry and professional practice.
Level 2 Graphics & Media
A one-year course which will develop your technical skills and
introduce you to this ever-changing industry. As part of your
learning experience you will participate in a range of exciting
live projects such as editing footage for local businesses.
Modules include: multimedia design, website development,
animation, and interactive media production.
Level 3 Creative Media Production
A two-year course which is highly practical and will broaden
your knowledge of the digital media industry. You will take
part in a range of project briefs, allowing you to explore a
range of fascinating roles and explore various production
techniques. A wide range of modules will be covered,
including storyboarding, editing techniques, camera
techniques, and commercial production.

Creative Media tutor Phil MacDonald is
excited to share his extensive industry
experience with his students and
encourage them to develop their creative skills.
Phil has a wealth of production and TV experience, having
worked on a huge range of projects including BBC One’s
Ambulance, Channel 4’s The Secret Life of the Zoo, ITV’s
The Voice, and most recently for BBC Natural History Unit
on Springwatch 2020.

ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION - VOCATIONAL COURSES
ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION
If you are a practical learner aiming to work with the latest technology
and progress in a thriving industry, Electrical Installation could be
perfect for you. These hands-on courses are designed to equip you
with the necessary skills to begin a successful career in this field.
Level 1 Electrical Installation
A one-year course designed to teach you the basic practical
elements and theoretical elements of Electrical Installation.
Modules include: fundamental safe working practices, site
preparation, and electrical installation wiring and termination.
Level 2 Electrical Installation
A one-year course furthering your theoretical and practical
knowledge. You will cover working safely and effectively,
principles of electro-technology, electrical principles and
installation. As well as developing practical skills you will be
introduced to scientific and mathematical concepts.

A one-year course covering a range of high-level modules
including principles of electrical science, fault diagnosis and
rectification, inspection, testing and commissioning and

Careers not Courses
There is a demand for newly trained electricians and
an abundance of job opportunities available. As you
progress through your career, you could move into design
engineering, project management, consultancy work or
training. You could even start up your own business!

Nick Anderson
Electrical Installation tutor Nick
Anderson has a wealth of knowledge
to share with his students, having
worked as an electrician all over the
world in countries such as Germany and America. Nick
has been teaching for almost 20 years and allows his vast
international industry experience to enhance his teaching.
Nick has also recently been appointed as the new Campus
Manager for the Winsford campus, and was delighted
to see the introduction of the new AMET Centre. He is
incredibly proud of the high-quality learning environment
that the campus offers, and is greatly looking forward to
welcoming the next wave of new students this September.

ENGINEERING
If you aim to develop your practical and theoretical knowledge in
preparation for a career as an Engineer, our high-tech courses
could be ideal for you. Working in our state-of-the-art workshops,
you will learn from our skilled tutors and have access to the latest
engineering equipment.
Level 2 Mechanical
Engineering (PEO)
A one-year course which is highly practical and designed for
students wanting to start working as electrical/mechanical
engineers. Modules include: electrical wiring and testing, hand
fitting techniques, milling and turning, using technical information,
and fixing machinery.
VOCATIONAL COURSES - ENGINEERING
Level 3 General Engineering
A two-year course which is more theory based, covering subjects
such as: reading engineering drawings, mechanical technology,
science for engineering, computer aided design (CAD),
mathematics, further mathematics and engineering projects.
This course is for those who would like to focus on the major
engineering disciplines, giving you the knowledge and practical
skills to develop as an engineer.
Note: To study Level 3 General Engineering you must have
achieved a grade 4 in GCSE Science.
Careers not Courses
Currently in the UK, Engineering skills are in short supply,
with almost half of engineering employers reporting
recruitment difficulties. The shortfall is estimated at 59,000
annually*, meaning there has never been a better time to
enter the industry as a young skilled professional.

Mechanical Engineering tutor Steve has
a wealth of industry experience, having
worked as a design and project engineer
in the automotive and materials handling
industries prior to his teaching career.
He has now been teaching for almost 25 years and
specialises in CAD and design, ensuring that his students
are exposed to the latest innovations in engineering design.

Vocational Studies
This unique study programme is ideal if you feel you need time and
support to develop the skills required for college, an apprenticeship,
or employment. After completing a vocational pathway, you will have
the skills to progress onto another college course. The vocational
pathway offers valuable work experience opportunities and allows
you to undertake taster sessions in a range of subject areas. You
will also work towards qualifications in English and Maths.
Personal & Social Development
Our supported learning provision is tailored to meet the needs of
each student, regardless of their ability, skillset and qualification
level. On this course you will follow an individualised learning
plan that is designed to meet your specific needs and to support
you to become more independent. You will develop your skills in
English and Maths, gain practical work experience, and have the
opportunity to sample a range of vocational areas.

Sarah Potts
Foundation Tutor Sarah Potts has been
teaching at Warrington & Vale Royal
College for the past 5 years.
Sarah teaches students of all ages and delivers a wide
range of curriculum including employability skills, Personal
& Social Development and Vocational Studies. She also
teaches catering and customer service in the Atrium
Kitchen at our Winsford campus. Sarah thoroughly enjoys
working at the college, saying: “I absolutely love my job
and the variety and great challenges it brings.”

GRAPHIC DESIGN
Do you like the sound of combining your creative skills with your
tech knowledge? Then this course is ideal for you! Our Graphic
Design courses will develop your creativity and knowledge of
specialist design software, allowing you to flourish in this
vibrant industry.
Level 2 Graphics & Media
A one-year course focused on delivering the core knowledge
and skills that every graphic designer will need to work in the
creative industries. Students will be taught how to generate
and develop ideas, as well as learning how to use Adobe
software.
Level 3 Graphic Design
VOCATIONAL COURSES - GRAPHIC DESIGN
A two-year course ideal for students who have previously
studied Art & Design, IT, Design Technology, and Media, and
want to further their skills and knowledge in the graphic design
subject area. The course is for anyone who is creatively
minded and is interested in digital design and marketing.
The course allows students to cover a wide range of areas
within graphic design with projects that cover packaging
design, corporate identity, digital illustration, digital
manipulation, advertising, and general print and digital
design briefs. Final products include: vinyl sleeves, posters,
magazines, interface designs, and logos.

Ellie Strowger
Ellie Strowger, our subject leader for
graphics and media, has been teaching
on the Graphic Design courses at the
college for the past five years. Ellie
has experience working on a wide range of commercial
graphic design projects for various clients across the UK,
from branding and corporate identity to packaging design.
Ellie loves teaching at the college and sharing her passion
for graphic design. With her industry knowledge and
experience, Ellie guides her students through the design
process and shares the fundamental skills needed within
the creative industries.

Alison Hetherington
Health & Social Care tutor Alison has

An apprenticeship allows you to work and study at the same
time; gaining practical experience with an employer while
attending college to achieve a qualification.
We like to call it ‘the best of both worlds!’
Apprenticeship Matching Service
At Warrington & Vale Royal College, we have a dedicated
Apprenticeship Team who provide a matching service, helping
you to find an ideal position with a fantastic employer. Some
students come to us with an employer already secured, but
for those who don’t, the matching service is here to help.
We will help you develop your CV, ready to send to
employers when suitable positions become available. Our
talented team have a huge range of employers they are in
communication with, giving you the best chance to find your
dream apprenticeship.
We also invite employers into college who are actively
recruiting. We introduce them to our students, giving you a
great opportunity to impress them!

Entry Requirements
Entry requirements vary depending on your apprenticeship
level. It is certainly advantageous to have a minimum of
grade 4 in English and Maths, although in most cases this
is not essential.
If you have not already achieved a grade 4 in English
and Maths, you will need to study these as part of your
apprenticeship. Please speak to the Apprenticeship
Team to find out more.

APPRENTICESHIPS
APPRENTICESHIPS AT WINSFORD CAMPUS:
Level 3 Business Administration
As an apprentice, you will gain a highly transferable set of knowledge, skills and behaviours which can be applied to a huge
variety of job roles. You could work in a range of organisations in the public, private or charitable sectors. As a Business
Administration Apprentice, your duties will include: supporting senior employees, maintaining records, arranging meetings,
typing up documents and liaising with internal and external stakeholders.
Level 2 Customer Service Practitioner
As a Customer Service Apprentice you may work in any sector or organisation and will develop a strong product knowledge
as well as high-quality customer service skills. Modules include: communication, conflict and challenge, teamwork, customer
experience and personal organisation.
Level 3 Electrical Installation
During this apprenticeship you will gain valuable practical experience by undertaking varied tasks and working with a range of
equipment. You will develop skills in diagnosis and fault-finding, communication, problem solving, and quality assurance.
Level 2 Engineering Operative
As an Engineering Operative Apprentice you will gain a range of sought-after skills which can be applied to various manufacturing
engineering sectors. You will cover a range of modules including fitting and assembly techniques, quality checking, electrical and
electronic assembly and testing, and mechanical manufacturing techniques.
Level 3 Engineering Operative (Machinist)
This apprenticeship involves highly skilled, complex and precision work. You will learn how to set up, operate and adjust a range
of equipment settings. Modules include: preparing and using CNC machines and milling machines, advanced turning techniques,
and properties and applications of engineering materials.

Level 3 Engineering Technician (Technical Support Technician)
Throughout this apprenticeship you will learn how to provide technical support and expertise for a range of areas within
engineering and manufacturing. The apprenticeship involves various modules such as reading engineering data, practical
problem solving, diagnostics and testing, and complying with regulations.
Level 3 Maintenance & Operations Engineering Technician (MOET)
Throughout this apprenticeship you will learn to maintain plant and equipment in industries that are part of the national
infrastructure engineering sector, such as electricity generating, oil and gas refining, and pharmaceuticals. You will also develop
skills in communication, inspection and maintenance, fault rectification, and assessing and testing equipment.

GETTING TO COLLEGE
Getting to our Winsford campus couldn’t be easier!
If you live more than one mile away from Winsford campus you are entitled to a FREE Arriva
bus pass.* As well as travelling to college you can also use your bus pass in the evenings and at
weekends! Many of our students even use their bus pass to travel to their part-time jobs or work
experience placements in the local area.
For students who will be cycling or driving we have plenty of bike racks and parking spaces
available. If you are coming to us by train our Winsford campus is a 20-minute walk away from
Winsford Station on the West Coast Main Line.

We also offer a FREE shuttle from Winsford to Warrington campus. Our bus service arrives at college in time for students to
have their FREE breakfast before lessons begin and leaves at 4.50pm after classes finish.
