PRINCIPAL’S
WELCOME
Welcome to Warrington & Vale Royal college and our latest 16-18 prospectus, I am delighted you are
considering your next steps in education with us in mind.
This is a really exciting year for the college as we anticipate the launch of our Health & Social Care
Academy and Advanced Creative & Digital Skills Centre, building on recent, planned investment in
resources and facilities in Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering and Advanced Construction
Trades. The college has an ambitious investment plan for the future too, so there has never been a
more exciting time to join us!
I feel immensely proud and privileged to write this foreword to you, once again, as the principal and
CEO of this fine, highly inclusive institution, an Ofsted rated ‘Good’ college and a tremendously
committed and caring college community that really is going from strength to strength. We put our
students at the heart of all we do, developing their talent, helping them to fulfil their potential and
seeing them on their way into successful careers and/or higher education.
We have worked very hard to ensure that the vast array of courses and learning opportunities
available to you will prepare you to be technically excellent in your chosen field and, therefore, highly
employable. It matters to all of us at the college that our students are happy, flourish during their time
with us and are inspired by our tutor experts, all of whom use the very best, industry-standard learning
resources to deliver a challenging, diverse and stimulating programme of learning to suit student’s
individual needs and interests.

ADVANCED CONSTRUCTION
& CIVIL ENGINEERING CENTRE
New for 2023-2024, our Advanced Construction & Civil Engineering (ACCE) Centre based
at Warrington campus will provide students with high-quality training and access to specialist
equipment and digital technology used in the construction and civil engineering industries. It is
envisaged that the ACCE Centre will be of national significance, a renowned centre of excellence, in
the heart of Warrington.
The centre will drive collaboration between the college, employers and the local authority to develop,
commercialise and promote digital technologies for the construction and civil engineering sectors
and the in-parallel skills training that supports it. In so doing, the ACCE Centre will assist the sectors
to build high quality, smart, green and efficient homes and building infrastructures, faster, cheaper
and more sustainably than ever before. It is envisaged that the ACCE Centre will be of national
significance, a renowned centre of excellence, in the heart of Warrington.
Studying in our ACEE Centre will increase your employability and open up a range of progression
opportunities that will allow you to climb higher up the ladder in the construction and engineering
industries.
ADVANCED CONSTRUCTION TRAINING (ACT)
The ACCE Centre will also be home to Advanced Construction Training
(ACT), a project funded by the Cheshire & Warrington Local Enterprise
Partnership (LEP) and run in partnership with Cheshire College South &
West, Reaseheath College, the UTC Warrington and Macclesfield College.

ADVANCED MANUFACTURING &
ENGINEERING TRAINING CENTRES
Our centres of excellence for advanced manufacturing and engineering at our Warrington and
Winsford campuses focus on teaching digital and advanced manufacturing and engineering.
The AMET Centres will work in close collaboration with local employers who have voiced a need
to digitalise their manufacturing processes and are keen to upskill their current workforce and
recruit skilled employees. With many high-profile employers based locally, including AstraZeneca in
Macclesfield, ThermoFisher Scientific in Warrington and Roberts Bakery in Northwich, there is no
shortage of employment opportunities within the Warrington and Cheshire region.
There has never been a better time to pursue a career in engineering. As technology rapidly develops,
the demand for skilled workers is growing.
Studying in our AMET Centres will provide you with the necessary skills and knowledge to kickstart
your career in this broad and rewarding industry.
CUTTING-EDGE FACILITIES
Our AMET Centres are equipped with cutting-edge facilities to support
students to develop in-demand industry skills such as robotics, industrial
control and digital intelligence, and serve the region as specialist hubs for
materials measurement, testing and analysis.

& DIGITAL SKILLS CENTRE
We are excited to announce the launch of our new Advanced Creative & Digital Skills (ACDS) Centre
at our Warrington campus, one of the first of its kind in the country to offer industry specific courses,
resources and skills training through the use of innovative technology and facilities.
Established with the help of a £1.3m investment from the Department for Education, our ACDS Centre
boasts state-of-the-art facilities and equipment. Students will have full access to innovative technology
such as virtual reality, robotics and visual effects (VFX).
Our centre will work closely with industry-leading employers to provide students with numerous
opportunities to enhance their knowledge and develop their skills. Studying in our ACDS Centre will
provide you with real-world experience and opportunities that will enable you to become an expert in
your field.
EXCITING EMPLOYER PARTNERSHIPS
Our ACDS Centre will be working in collaboration with employers to provide students with
exciting opportunities and experiences. Games design students can look forward to working with
developer 10:10 Games, performing arts students can expect to be busy with the Liverpool Empire
Theatre, and art & design students can anticipate live briefs and travel opportunities as they benefit
from our partnership with Tate Liverpool. These are the first of many more partnerships to follow!

HEALTH & SOCIAL CARE ACADEMY
We are delighted to announce the launch of our brand new Health & Social Care Academy at our
Warrington campus, a regional centre of excellence providing an immersive learning environment for
students seeking to pursue a career in this rewarding field.
Established with a £1million investment from Warrington’s Town Deal and support from Warrington &
Halton NHS Trust, Warrington Local Authority and many other stakeholders from the voluntary and
private sectors, our innovative academy features a range of fantastic facilities, including a hospital
ward, dementia training resources and an independent living flat.
Working in partnership with the health & social care sector and it’s key employers, the Academy
seeks to address the skills gap in the local area by training the next generation of health and social
care professionals. Students will have the opportunity to undertake valuable industry placements,
benefitting from working with established professionals.
We are incredibly excited about this new development and are looking forward to welcoming to
students to this bespoke facility.
VALUABLE INDUSTRY TRAINING
Our Health & Social Care Academy will be working closely with local
employers, care providers and health and social care settings across the
region to provide sector-specific, specialised training including manual
handling, personal assistance, first aid and clinical skills such as venepuncture.

Student support is central to everything we do at Warrington & Vale Royal College. We pride
ourselves in our ability to support each and every student throughout their college experience. We
always go the extra mile to make sure our students have the resources, people and care they need
to thrive at college.
Pastoral support
You will be allocated a Progress Coach who will meet you on
a 1-1 basis, monitor your attendance and performance, offer
advice and guidance and help you to prepare for your next
step after college.
You will also take part in our ASPIRE tutorial programme,
which supports your personal and social development with
a series of talks from guest speakers such as Cheshire
Police and the NHS. A host of topics are covered, including:
mental health, careers, UCAS, drive safe, volunteering and
British Values.

Your wellbeing is important to us
We are committed to ensuring all of our students attend
college in a safe and secure environment. All staff are
trained in safeguarding practices, ensuring strict policies
and procedures are in place to protect you.
Our Safeguarding Team of dedicated, highly-trained and
experienced advisors work closely with Progress Coaches
to help students overcome any issues affecting their
wellbeing. They provide support and advice on a range
of issues, including: physical and mental health, welfare,
financial worries and personal issues.
Looked after children and care leavers
A wide-ranging and inclusive system is in place to support
looked after children and care leavers. This includes
pre-enrolment visits, vulnerable bursary support and
specialist designated tutors.
We are proud to be members of the Care Leaver Covenant.

At Warrington & Vale Royal College, we recognise that high quality support is an essential part of
student success. We have a dedicated Additional Learning Support Team committed to developing
the skills, behaviours and attitudes required to enable our students to realise their full potential and
prepare for their next steps.
When applying for a course you are encouraged to disclose any disability or learning difficulty on the
application form so that we can ensure the appropriate support is in place for when you start college.
You may be referred to learning support by your school, tutor, Progress Coach or you may self-refer.
Support needs
We are keen to support students who have a range of
additional learning support needs, including:

Transition and Education & Health
Care Plans
If you have an Education & Health Care Plan (EHCP), we
will produce a bespoke support plan outlining the support
that you need at college. We also take part in annual
reviews at your school and offer various transition visits and
opportunities to help you adjust to college life.
Study support
We have a study support area in our Learning Resource
Centre. It offers you quiet study spaces in a supportive
environment, and you can drop in to chat about support or
to book study sessions.

& BURSARIES
Our Welfare Team, based in Learner Services, will always do what we can to support you through
financial hardship.
16-19 FUND
This could help you with travel costs to college (if you live over one mile away from the campus
you study at), uniform, educational visits and trips, course materials, DBS costs, UCAS
applications and travel to university interviews.
16-19 VULNERABLE FUND
If you are a looked-after child, a care-leaver or receiving universal credit in your own name, you
may be eligible for up to £1,200 in support of education related costs.
FREE COLLEGE MEALS
If you or your family receive certain benefits, you may be entitled to free college meals funding.
Please ask so we can check this for you.
All of our students are entitled to a free college breakfast, regardless of whether you are eligible
for free college meals.

HOW CAN I APPLY FOR FINANCIAL SUPPORT?
Once you have enrolled on your course, you will be able to apply for the bursary. You will need
to complete an application form, available from our Welfare Team. You will also need to provide
evidence of any benefits you or your family receive and proof of household income.
Please note that payments will only be made into the student’s bank account. Assessments will be
made on a first come, first served basis.

Sue Wilby
Bursary & Student Support Administrator
Sue Wilby has worked at Warrington & Vale Royal college for seventeen years
and is the college’s Bursary & Student Support Administrator. Sue processes
approximately 800 bursary applications each year, from both 16-18-year-old
and adult students.
The college bursary is in place to support students with course-related costs
such as kit and uniform, course trips, free college meals and bus passes.
Sue also deals with queries about the college’s dedicated bus services, with
around 300 students registering for a college bus pass each year.

Supporting and advising your child through the decision making process as they prepare to leave school
can be difficult, especially if you do not feel knowledgeable about the courses and levels yourself.
We can help in several ways:

Come and have a chat with our School Engagement Team
at your school’s parents’ evening. We also attend school
events every week, deliver assemblies, lunchtime drop-ins
and attend careers fairs. Encourage your child to talk to us
and discuss the options available to them.
Attend a careers session
with your child
If you feel your child needs additional careers advice, a
member of our experienced Careers Team will sit down with
you and your child and delve deeper into their interests and
career ambitions.
Ask your child to apply to study
with us
Applying doesn’t commit your child to studying with us. In
fact, they do not have to make a decision to study with us
until GCSE results day in August. The pre-college course
discussion with a member of our team will also help your
child with their decision making. You are encouraged to join
them at the course discussion.
Once your child is offered a place at college, they will
be invited to a college sample session where they can
experience the course they have applied for. You too will be
invited in on the same evening to meet our Principal and ask
any questions you may have.
Transport to college
We offer dedicated bus services to our Warrington campus
and a free bus pass for students at our Winsford campus.

FAQS
What is the difference between vocational qualifications, A Levels and T Levels?
A Levels are assessed mainly through exams, while vocational courses are assessed mainly by coursework. In terms of
UCAS points, level 3 diploma vocational qualifications are often equivalent to three A Levels. T Levels have been co-created

Levels and are assessed by both exams and coursework.
Do you need to study A Levels to get into university?
No. Students studying level 3 vocational qualifications, such as the BTEC (Extended) Diploma, can gain up to 168 UCAS
points (depending on their grades) which is equivalent to 3 A* at A Level. Apprentices can also progress to university-level
study or higher level apprenticeships (level 4).
What is the application deadline?
We do not have a deadline for applications, in fact, our applications stay open until late September 2023. However, if your
child knows what they want to do, it is best to get their application in quickly as some courses are very popular.
Even if your child begins a course but finds it is not right for them, our transfer window in September means they can switch
to another course.

T Levels are a brand-new level 3 qualification designed to give you a head start towards the future you
want. They follow GCSEs and have been co-created by the industry you want to be part of, so you can
gain the knowledge and skills you need to leap ahead of the crowd and into your desired career.

T Levels are an alternative to A Levels, apprenticeships and other level 3 courses. Equivalent to 3

our own artist-in-residence. You will complete an industry
placement to broaden your skills and experience. Industry

such as Blakemere Craft Centre and Warrington Museum &

Throughout your course you will also participate in guest
lecture workshops with inspiring artists such as Julie Fewster,
a ceramicist designer who has travelled the world, and Carlo

Our students have taken on live briefs from Mind, the
mental health charity - an organisation we closely
collaborate with, as well as selling their own artwork at the
Warrington Artisan Market.

Following the completion of your level 3 course or T Level,
you will have gained a license to practice which enables
you to move on to employment in a nursery, school or other
childcare settings. Alternatively, you could take your studies

Many of our students have gone on to further study,

Charlotte Marshall is Curriculum Manager for Childcare and Health & Social Care, and has
been teaching at the college for six years.
Charlotte has an abundance of industry experience to share with her students, having
previously worked as a Nursery Manager and achieving a BA (Hons) Early Childhood Studies
and an MA Education from the University of Chester. Charlotte absolutely loves teaching at
the college and helping her students to reach their career goals and become successful early

A one-year entry level course that introduces you to three
construction trades - brickwork, carpentry & joinery and plumbing.

Level 2 Site Carpentry & Joinery Apprentice Matt Nash decided to enrol onto
an apprenticeship after deciding university was not the right pathway for him.
He has always been very hands-on and practical, so was looking for a career
to suit this. Matt, a former pupil of King’s Leadership Academy, is employed
by Emerald Bay and is enjoying his apprenticeship so much that he is
looking forward to progressing onto the level 3 apprenticeship.

Electrical Installation Tutor Ryan Steele served eight years in the Royal Navy before retraining

A one-year entry level course that introduces you to three

Meet our expert tutors: Mark Evans
IT Tutor Mark Evans has twenty five years of experience in manufacturing, including fifteen
years within the IT industry. After gaining his degree, he became an IT Manager for a large
company. This role involved PC and laptop installations, support for servers and networking,
as well as mobile and landline telephony and many other software systems needed to run a
manufacturing site.
After gaining his PGCE he became an ICT Teacher in a secondary school, teaching up to A
Level. Within further education, he has taught various levels and units from hardware through
to software, and brings his wealth of industry experience to his teaching.

Every pathway has its own fantastic industry links. For
instance, our construction department has great relationships

Wilson Homes. Our hairdressing and beauty department also

Some of our foundation students run the Novel Bite Café in
Winsford library and you may get the chance to experience
this real-life working environment.
Progression opportunities & alumni
The majority of our students go on to study on level 1
courses, however, just because this is an entry level course
it does not mean that you have to do level 1, some students
skip this stage and are accepted on to level 2.
We have students who have progressed to supported
internships, apprenticeships, and university. One of our
students impressed the college so much during his industry
placement he is now employed as a plumber at the college!

Beauty Therapy Tutor Camelia Nicolaou brings over twenty years of industry experience to the
classroom, having previously taught in various colleges and for private academies, as well as
owning her own salon for 10 years.

You will get the chance to work on live briefs, using your
make-up artistry skills at all kinds of events. You will also
get the chance to work with local companies to create
spooky looks for their Halloween events and learn about the
industry from guest speakers representing leading hair and
beauty suppliers, and from previous students who now run
their own make-up businesses.
Industry placements are an important part of your learning
too, and you will get to showcase your skills at charity and
special events - past students have created make-up looks
for models at a fashion show for Vintage Viola.
Trips & visits
You will attend leading trade shows such as IMATs London
and Professional Beauty North, where you can meet
experts in the industry and be the first to learn about
new and emerging products. Our students also take part
in various competitions such as Cheshire & Warrington
Skills Competition and the Association of Hairdressers &
Therapists held in Winter Gardens in Blackpool.
Facilities
You will undergo your training in The Academy, our
fully-equipped commercial hair and beauty salon which
allows students to work in a real salon environment and
practise their skills on real, paying clients. The Academy
houses media make-up workshops kitted with studio lighting
and industry-standard equipment.
Progression opportunities & alumni
After completing the course, you could progress on to
university courses in advanced theatrical media make-up.
Many students move on to working as a freelance
make-up artist, or boost their employability skills with the
short courses and masterclasses offered by the college.
Many students are now working in TV, film, theatre and
editorial roles.

Media Make-Up Tutor Rayner Cunniffe enjoys sharing her vast experience with her
students. Rayner was a student herself on our Level 2 Hair & Media Make-Up course before
progressing onto Level 4 Advanced Theatrical Media Make-Up, seting up her own business,
teaching and securing fourth place in the UK Hair & Beauty Awards 2022.
Being a former student at the college means Rayner understands her students’ needs and
helps them to succeed on the course: “I absolutely love teaching. I strive to create career
paths for my students and ensure they have the support they need.”

make-up, applying make-up, shaping and colouring brows and health

dynamic, and a great place to be if you
would love to be part of TV, film or theatre
production. With so much opportunity
available, a career in make-up can be
really rewarding.
Did you know?
• Some media make-up artists go on to
specialise in medical aesthetics, using
make-up techniques to hide scars and
skin conditions to improve a client’s
psychological wellbeing and confidence.
• As a media make-up artist, you will
work on a variety of exciting briefs. You
will interpret the make-up requirements
of clients to produce both a creative
and technically accurate visual
representation. This may involve basic
make-up for a TV presenter through
to more complex period make-up or
special effects.
• A head make-up artist can earn £170 to
£320 for a ten-hour day of editorial work
on a magazine, catalogue or campaign.

Trips & visits

Our brand-new Health & Social Care Academy features a
range of outstanding industry-standard facilities designed
to completely immerse students in a health & social care
environment and prepare them for the workplace. The
Academy is a regional centre of excellence, training students
to meet local employment needs and houses a simulation
hospital ward, an assisted living flat, a wide range of medical
equipment and dementia training facilities.
Progression opportunities & alumni
After completing your level 3 qualification you can go on
to our HNC Health Care Practice, which will allow you to
progress into the second year of a nursing degree when you
have completed the correct number of placement hours.

Health & Social Care Tutor Tanya Emmerson has a wealth of industry experience, having

industry, offering you a unique opportunity to meet and
learn from renowned chefs who own some of the best
restaurants in the North West. These include Gary Usher
from Elite Bistros, and Michelin-star chef Aiden Byrne,
owner of The Church Green gastropub.
As well as hosting weekly live services at our award-winning
restaurant, Buckley’s, you will also complete a minimum of
60 hours industry placement. Students have undertaken
industry placements at Manchester Kitchen, Australasia,
Dorado Lounge, Park Royal Hotel, Village Hotel, Kirkfield
Hotel and Dine Catering.
Trips & visits
You will have the opportunity to visit local and national
hospitality businesses, learning from industry experts and
renowned chefs. You will also be able to visit fresh produce
suppliers such as butchers, fishmongers and vegetable
suppliers.
Each year, students also have the chance to put their skills
to the test by entering the Welsh International Culinary
Championships, as well as a number of other competitions
such as the International Wine & Food Society’s Black
Pudding Competition.

You will study in our award-winning restaurant, Buckley’s,
making use of industry-standard kitchens equipped with
the latest high-tech equipment such as rational ovens. You
will work with exciting ingredients from around the world,
supplied by top quality local artisan providers.
Buckley’s is a fully-operational restaurant where you will
develop your practical experience, not only in the kitchen
but also front-of-house, serving the guests, which gives
you a well-rounded understanding of how the hospitality
industry operates.

After completing your level 3 course, you have the
qualification and skills to go straight into employment.
Alternatively, you can choose to carry on studying at a
higher level, and complete a HND, foundation degree, or

around the country. One notable student, Liam Rogers,
made it to the final of Masterchef: The Professionals 2021
and works in a two Michelin starred restaurant at The

A one-year course designed to build up your basic knowledge
and understanding of the principles of food preparation. You will
focus on knife skills, kitchen equipment, food safety and cookery

A one-year course focusing on employability skills, catering

previously been home-schooled, however she says she quickly settled

spaces in our brand-new Advanced Creative & Digital Skills

specialist lighting and sound equipment, where you will learn
to operate sound and lighting boards. Our purpose-built
dance and acting studios are also equipped with sprung
floors and floor-to-ceiling mirrors.

After successfully completing your course, you can choose
to go straight to work in the performing arts sector, or
continue your education with us on our HNC or HND
Professional Theatre or Dance Practices. Alternatively, you
could progress on to university or a specialist performing
arts programme.
Former students have found success in theatre, TV work
and setting up their own dance or drama workshops.
One notable example is former student Ariane Sallis,
who starred in productions in London’s West End before
securing a coveted role at Disneyland Hong Kong, where
she performs to thousands of people every day. Many
students go on to prestigious drama and dance schools and
universities, such as Edge Hill, Shockout Dance Academy
and East 15 Acting School.

Performing Arts Tutor Rosie Rigby has taught at the college for three years and specialises in
acting and singing.
Rosie graduated from East 15 Acting School with honours before going on to work with many
prominent London theatre companies, including The National Theatre and Solomon Theatre
Company, as well as local theatre companies in the North West. Rosie loves sharing her
experience with her students and encouraging them to explore their passion for performing arts.

Trips to leisure attractions are part of the skills for
independence, life & work course. Previous students have
visited the zoo, bowling alleys, theme parks, participated
in organised walks, crazy golf and even attended outdoor
activity centres.

The Novel Bite Café at Winsford Library is a fantastic facility
run by our students, where you can learn to produce and
serve a range of hot and cold meals and snacks. Working
in this real-life café will also build up your skills in customer
service, teamwork and communication.
Meet our expert tutors: Sara Shaw
Foundation Tutor Sara Shaw joined the college having previously worked in the hospitality
sector. Sara loves delivering the theory in the classroom and seeing it put into practice in the
workplace, particularly in our Novel Bite Café in Winsford.
Sara says: “It’s wonderful to see the students engage with members of the community when
they’re running events. They’re also involved with promoting the café through our social media
and enjoy showing off their skills and achievements. It’s a very rewarding role, I love it!”

Preparation for Employment
& Supported Internship
If you have an Education & Health Care Plan (EHCP) or a
learning disability/learning difficulty, our preparation for supported
employment and supported internships could be ideal for you.
Preferably, you will have been studying at college for at least one
year, be aged 17-24 and have a real ambition to progress into paid
or voluntary employment in the future. It is also very important that
you have a positive attitude towards work and are keen to develop
new skills.
Preparation for Employment
This course introduces you to the world of work through a range of
industry placement tasters, community visits and classroom-based
employability sessions, alongside developing your English and maths
and the chance to gain qualifications.

On this course you will spend up to four days a week at an
employer’s premises, which helps you develop your independence,

sessions at the college will boost your employability skills even
more, while letting you discuss your week and meet up with fellow
interns. You will be supported by a Job Coach throughout all these
experiences and in the workplace.

Sean Bruce has always been passionate about sports, particularly football,
and knew he wanted to pursue a career in this field. The former Hope
Academy pupil is thoroughly enjoying his course.
After completing his course next year, Sean intends to head to university to
study physiotherapy and believes the skills and knowledge he is learning on

We work closely with LiveWire, Warrington Wolves
Foundation and Warrington Schools Sports Partnership to
deliver a programme of sporting events for primary schools
in the local area, helping you to develop your coaching and
leadership skills, as well as sport session development and
delivery.
You will have the opportunity to gain industry experience
in areas such as sport coaching, sport leadership
and fitness testing. You can also complete a range of
nationally-recognised courses, such as the FA Level 1 in
Officiating Football, as well as also completing additional
modules in areas such as UK anti-doping regulations.
Trips & visits
Your course includes plenty of exciting trips and visits,
many of them based around sporting and outdoor pursuits
such as Old Trafford, Manchester Velodrome and the
English Institute of Sport in Sheffield. There will also be
visits to various sports specialist universities such as
Edge Hill, Liverpool John Moores and UCLAN to help you
prepare for your next steps.
Facilities
You will study in our newly-refurbished Sport, Military &
Emergency Services Academy equipped with modern
classrooms and a specialist fitness suite, which contains
industry-standard equipment such as strength and
conditioning machines, a free weights area and a range of
cardiovascular and resistance equipment.
Progression opportunities & alumni
You may gain a job in industry, progress to our HNC Sports
& Exercise Sciences or apply to university. We also offer
fitness instructor, personal trainer and sports massage
courses in addition to our higher education courses.
Students have gone on to successful careers in the sports
industry, ranging from coaching and fitness training to
competing as professional athletes. Two of our students -
Harvey Livett and Patrick Moran - started their rugby league
career playing for Warrington Wolves.

Matt Bold is Curriculum Manager for Sport, Military & Emergency Services and has over
twenty five years experience in the industry. Matt has worked as Head of Faculty, Head of
Sixth Form and Assistant Principal in secondary schools across the North West.
Matt says: “It is an immense pleasure to watch our students progress from studying with us
and going onto rewarding careers. It is great seeing the students become more inspired to
make a positive impact.”

Level 2 Sport
This one-year course is an ideal starting point towards a career in the
sport, health and fitness industries. Modules covered include: fitness
induction and testing, assisting in the delivery of exercise and fitness
sessions and leading sports and physical activities sessions.
Level 3 Sport & Physical Activity
This two-year course further develops your understanding of sport
and physical activity.
Modules covered include: sports coaching, performance analysis,
sports injuries and rehabilitation, nutrition and diet, biomechanics and
sport and exercise psychology. You will gain experience in leading

Trips & visits
Trips and visits are an integral part of your study
programme and we arrange a wide range of physical and
outdoor pursuits to test your limits. Previous students have
visited Low Mill Outdoor Centre in the Yorkshire Dales
and completed their Duke of Edinburgh Award. We also
take students on educational trips to places such as The
Imperial War Museum, Lea Green (conflict management
training with the police), Whitegate Way and even to an
Army Reserves unit where students can take on challenges
similar to the Army selection process.
Facilities
You will be based in our newly refurbished, state-of-theart
Sport, Military & Emergency Services Academy which
houses our modern classrooms. This is where you will also

The majority of students successfully secure roles in
the military and public services sector. This is achieved
through a variety of routes including: joining entry-level
schemes straight from college, progressing onto a higher
apprenticeship for a specific role, taking the college’s HNC
Public Services, or via a higher education route.
Students have successfully progressed into careers with
the police, military & emergency services. A high number of
students go on to study at university, with students enrolling
on courses such as international politics and criminology.

Military & Emergency Services Tutor Andy Bramhall holds a Bachelor of Arts in Sports
Development and a Certificate in Education. He has worked at the college for over seven
years and is passionate about providing a range of opportunities for his students.

Level 2 Military & Emergency Services
A one-year course which will teach you about the impact of war,
conflict and terrorism, and the role of uniformed services within
today’s society. You will also study health and fitness, sport and
recreation, land navigation and volunteering. The course is designed
to help you develop the skills and qualities that prepare you for
military & emergency services.
Level 3 Military & Emergency Services
A two-year course which covers government policies, citizenship
and diversity, discipline in the uniformed public services, physical
preparation, health and lifestyle, outdoor and adventurous expedition
and volunteering.
The first year involves testing your skills and engaging with the
military & emergency services. The second year involves looking
at legal aspects of a public service and developing a clear
understanding of what it takes to enlist onto a public service.

You will be told if you have successfully been offered a place to study with us.
4. REGISTER FOR THE BUS AND BURSARIES
Once you have your offer, you can register for a place on the free college bus.

There are different ways to progress. You can start on a related course and then move on to the next level the following year.

What is the difference between applying and enrolling?
Applying refers to the process of choosing a course and submitting an application. You will then be invited for a course
discussion with the tutor and if this is successful, you will be invited back to the college on GCSE results day, which is when
you ‘enrol’ on the course.
HELP! I did not get the grades I wanted. What do I do?
Do not worry if you did not get the grades you hoped for, there are other options available. Maybe you need to start a level
below, or on an alternative course. Speak to our friendly tutors who will advise which course is best for you.
Can we discuss my course in school?
Yes, absolutely. We can visit you in school, either during lunch break or immediately after school. We can even discuss the
course over the telephone.
