The story is centred around
two families. Wednesday
has brought her boyfriend
and his parents home to meet
the family.
‘‘He’s verypassionate. You
can tellwhen he likes
something. He getsabig smile
on his face.’’
Ruby says playing Morticia
is quitedifferent from playing
one of the lads in Guysand
Dolls two years ago.
‘‘I like that she is avery
strong character. She loves
her husband and can run her
own house, and she is also
Paid roles will strengthen ambulance service
From Page 1
Asecond paramedic will be employed in
Culverden, andanotherparamedic and
two emergencymedicalassistants will
jointhe Kaikourateam.
Mr Gillman said he hadlooked at the
workload of all centres and found doublecrewing
of ambulances at peaktimes,
particularlyatweekends when people
wereplaying sport and doing adventurous
activities, wasdifficult.
He saysthe paramedics at Culverden
and Kaikoura work9am to 5pm on
weekdays, whileAmberley crews areall
volunteers.
Volunteers had providedgreat service,
but having extra, paid staff in Amberley
would easethe workload on them.
Mr Gillman says thereisastrong
volunteer teaminCulverden,whichhas
the capacity to crew an ambulance. The
extra paramedicwillallowfor the
provisionofasecond crew, andhelpboost
paramedic coverage to seven days aweek.
Kaikourawas slightly differentasithad
amore transient populationand, until
Covid19, abig visitorindustry. A
paramedic was availablefrom 9am to
5pm, Monday to Friday, and outside of
thosehours,itrelied heavily on
volunteers.
‘‘That will change, and it is really
exciting—but we still needour
volunteers,’’ Mr Gillman says.
Recruitmentfor the newpositionshad
already startedand it washopedtohave
newrostersand delivery of the new
services in placebyJune1.
Mr Gillmansaysthe paramedics will
alsobevaluable mentors, andhelp the
development of new volunteers.
He says thereisstill moreworktobe
doneinthe Hurunuidistrict.
Meanwhile,inthe Waimakariri district,
which wasclosertoChristchurch City,
morevolunteerswereavailablebecause
of the population base.
In Rangiora, aparamedic, supported by
the CanterburyDistrict Health Board,
was available. If apersoncalled their
local medicalcentre afterhours and
spoke with atriage nurse, theycouldbe
assisted by the paramedic, who would
visit their home.
‘‘Itisapretty cool initiative,’’ Mr
Gillmansays.
