« parra news Tuesday, March 30, 2021 LOCAL NEWS Tackling youth crime Early intervention among the key strategies to get children back on track NICOLA BARTON Officers say early intervention is the key to tackling youth-related crime around the region, as recent reports show children as young as nine getting caught up in serious offences. Both Cumberland and Parramatta have similar youth crime statistics, with offences such as stalk, intimidation and harassment, robbery, malicious damage and theft being the most common. Just recently, three children under 15-years-old were arrested after commiting a string of serious offences. On Saturday, February 27, a 12-year-old boy in the company of a nine and 11-yearold allegedly stole keys to a Holden Barina in North Parramatta before driving erratically, narrowly missing three people watching the sunrise in the car park of a reserve at Carlingford. The children committed a number of offences on the day, including the theft of a mobility scooter which was being ridden by a man, theft from retail stores, and two fail-to-stop crashes, before dumping the Senior Sergeant Mark Kneipp, Detective Inspector Simon Glasser, Constable Hayriye Kizildag and Senior Constable Shane Summersford. While running from the scene of an alleged attempted stealing at a convenience store, the nine-year-old boy was struck by a vehicle on Victoria Road, West Ryde and the others fled the scene. He was taken to The Children’s Hospital in Westmead for treatment. On Monday, March 1, a 15-year-old boy stole keys to a Hyundai Accent during an aggravated break and enter at a home on Ancona Avenue, Toongabbie before engaging in a short pursuit with police. The vehicle was seen driving erratically and at high-speed throughout the surrounding suburbs of Toongabbie. On the same day the same 11 and 12-yearold, allegedly threatened a 29-year-old pregnant woman with a knife and stole her Mazda 3 that was parked in a car park at Pendle Hill. Eventually all three were arrested and charged with an array of offences. Cumberland Police Area Command Crime Manager, Detective Inspector Simon Glasser said the issue of youth crime is common across both Cumberland and Parramatta regions but is not one of their major crime categories. “A lot of these kids haven’t had the best upbringing, some do and they’ve mixed in with the wrong crowd, but the aim for us is early intervention and that’s why going into schools and being a part of programs is really important,” he said. “We refer a lot of kids at risk of entering the criminal justice system to PCYC, our closest one being Parramatta and they have a number of fantastic programs aimed at targeting those teenage kids. We also work closely with both Councils.” Detective Inspector Glasser said Telopea and Pemulwuy are the most recent places experiencing a number of youth related crime incidents. 12 PN44180
