Bridging language gap
Cumberland City Council partners with TAFE to deliver English classes

Local Cumberland residents and
newly arrived migrants will have
access to free English classes, as
part of a new Council-led initiative.
Cumberland City Council has partnered
with the Career Pathways and Employability
Skills section at TAFE NSW Liverpool,
to provide free English classes at the
Auburn Centre for Community.
According to Census data, 52.2 per cent
of the Cumberland City population were
born overseas and 65.6 per cent of the
population speak a language other an
English at home.
Cumberland Mayor, Steve Christou
said the program was critical, due to the
diverse nature of the local community.
“We see diversity as our strength and we
celebrate that,” he said.
“From our food offerings to the language
we speak, our residents are enthusiastic
about opportunities that increase their
sense of community and their connections.
“These classes are designed to help
people improve their English language

“Students have a great opportunity to
build their skills in speaking, writing,
reading and listening.
“Besides making life in Australia a little
easier, the course provides a pathway to
future training and employment opportunities
in TAFE NSW.”
Michelle Morrison, Head Teacher Career
Pathways and Employability Skills, said
the course even helps families at home.
“Students often say that learning English
has helped them understand their children’s
homework and read books, which
means they can help them learn,” she said.
Classes are offered at the Auburn Centre
for Community and are being held in
accordance with applicable COVID-19
safe protocols.
12 participants registered for the nineweek
course, which commenced in early
February.
Classes will continue for a second term
and Council will monitor interest from
the community to see if the program can
expand on a regular basis.
