Long-awaited upgrade for busy
Cashmere intersection starts soon
LONG-AWAITED work to
improve safety for all road users
at a busy intersection along
Cashmere Rd will start this
month.
City council planning and
delivery manager Lynette
Ellis said construction on the
Cashmere, Hoon Hay and
Worsleys Rds intersection will
take four months.
“We’re realigning the
intersection so vehicles can
cross directly from Hoon
Hay Rd to Worsleys Rd, and
installing traffic lights and
pedestrian signals,” said Ellis.
“This is a busy intersection
with a high number of cyclists
and motorists. This area is also
the entrance to the Christchurch
Adventure Park and the new
Cashmere Estate subdivision.’’
The city council has contracted
HEB Construction
to carry out the intersection
improvements.
Upgrades at the intersection
will include re-aligning the intersection
to accommodate traffic
lights, constructing speed humps
in the surrounding streets as a
traffic calming measure, planting
native trees and new road
landscape gardens.

“As expected with a project of
this scale, there will be disruption
to traffic while we reconstruct
the intersection, but we’ll

Work under way on Hornets’ building
• By Chris Barclay
IT’S FINALLY game on at the
site of the new Halswell Hornets
rugby league club headquarters,
thanks to a vital funding
injection for the $2 million
project.
Work has recently got under
way on a former car park at
Halswell Domain, more than
a decade after the original
clubrooms were
damaged by the
earthquakes.
Protracted discussions
with the
club’s insurance
company delayed
Jeff
Whittaker
the start of the
multi-purpose
building, while
the eventual payout
still left a $400,000 shortfall.
Hornets vice-president Jeff
Whittaker said assistance from
the Lottery Grants Board, the
Rata Foundation and Canterbury
West Coast Air Rescue
Trust over the last three months
got the rebuild over the line.
“If they hadn’t come on board
to help we basically couldn’t
have got a loan or refinance to
pay the loan back to build the
clubrooms,” Whittaker said.
He hoped the new clubrooms,
which will also be utilised by
softball, touch rugby and possibly
netball, should be completed
by Christmas or the New Year.
When the new building is
ready the original must be demolished.
In the interim the Hornets
also had to build a storage room/
gym and changing sheds at the
Domain, costs that diminished
the insurance payout.
“It’s been quite sad in one
way,” Whittaker said.
“We were totally freehold,
we were insured. Then it was
costing $20,000 (a year) to
insure the clubrooms, storage
and changing sheds. We were
basically nearly going broke as a
voluntary organisation that was
pretty much only open Saturday
afternoon’s after footy.”
He credited devoted club
members for raising the funds to
cover those costs.
“The old brigade, our life
members have worked their
butts off to raise funds to get the
clubrooms up and running,” he
said.
BUILDING
BUZZ: The
Halswell
Hornets
rugby league
club’s new
rooms are
finally under
construction
at Halswell
Domain
thanks to
a funding
boost.
“They were running raffles on
a Thursday, Friday and Saturday
nights at the (Craythornes)
Halswell Tavern (Craythornes)
and doing barbecues just to raise
enough money to pay the insurance.”
Whittaker hoped the new
clubrooms would be used
throughout the week by sporting
and community organisations.
“We want the community to
be part of it. It’ll be a big project
once it’s up and running to see
what we can do that way.”
Library to close
temporarily,
service desk
running
LINWOOD LIBRARY will close
and the customer service desk will
relocate for three weeks from this
Sunday so that improvements can
be made to the facility.
“When Linwood Library and
customer service centre reopens
on April 27, visitors will be able to
enjoy new furnishing, décor and
a modified layout that will better
suit their needs,” said city council
head of libraries and information
Carolyn Robertson.
Customer services will continue
to operate while the library is
closed.
The desk will relocate to a spot
directly opposite the Linwood
Library entrance inside Eastgate
Mall. It will keep its usual hours
from Monday to Friday, 9am-
5pm.
“During the library’s temporary
three-week closure, people can
return borrowed items to any
library in our network. Reserved
items will be made available at
the nearby Shirley Library, unless
customers request otherwise,’’
Robertson said
The closest libraries for
Linwood residents are the Aranui
Library, Shirley Library and
Tūranga. All are open seven days
a week.

Air Force vet sponsors student for solo flight
WHEN AIR Force veteran
Derrick Hubbard flew solo
on his 90th birthday with the
Canterbury Recreational
Aircraft Club, he and his now
late wife, Vera, decided to pay it
forward.
Now 94, the Summerset at
Wigram retirement village
resident and his wife of 70 years
wanted to sponsor a young
person to experience the same
opportunity.
Derrick, originally from
England, joined the Royal Air
Force as an aircraft apprentice at
RAF Halton in 1943.
After serving as an engineer
alongside some Kiwis in No 24
Squadron during World War 2,
it cemented his desire to move to
New Zealand, which happened
in 1958.
He later joined the RNZAF
where he served for 24 years.
Amid the height of Covid-19
and following his wife’s death
last year, Derrick approached
CRAC flying instructor, Dave
Mitchell, and Air Force Museum
of New Zealand education
officer, Chris Davey, to seek out a
deserving young trainee pilot.
After a rigorous application
process, 16-year-old Rangiora
High School student Armani
Hansen received funding from
Derrick and Vera for lessons on
how to achieve a solo flight.
Armani has had a passion
for flight from a young age and
was already working part-time
at the Rangiora New World
supermarket to save for his longterm
goal to become a pilot.
He was also selected for a
Gateway Aviation programme at
high school to enhance his flight
theory knowledge.
OPPORTUNITY:
Air Force veteran
Derrick Hubbard,
94, and his
late wife, Vera,
sponsored
Armani Hansen,
16, to achieve his
first solo flight.
Flight instructor Mitchell put
Armani through his paces in
weekly flying lessons. At the
Rangiora Airfield last week
Armani was scheduled for a
further flying lesson.
As with most trainee pilots,
he had no prior warning of his
solo flight, as it is only when
the student is deemed ready by
the instructor who gives the goahead
to take off on their own.
With Armani’s family
secretly escorted into the CRAC
clubrooms, the group watched
as Mitchell instructed Armani
through “touch and go”
circuits, before taxiing to the
clubrooms.
“I told him we were taxiing
back to the threshold for another
take-off, and when near the
clubhouse I added – ‘but this
time you are doing it on your
own. I am getting out now’,”
Mitchell said.
With Derrick watching from
his home at Summerset via video
call, Armani took off and did a
circuit of the airfield, with an
empty seat next to him.
As he executed “a textbook
landing,” he finally spotted his
family next to the clubhouse.
Said Armani: “It was a very
exciting and exhilarating
experience that I will never
forget. When Dave got off the
plane and said I was going to
go up solo, I couldn’t keep the
grin off my face, even though it
was nerve-racking; the thought
of knowing that I would be at
1200ft all alone.
“Thank you so much to
Derrick for giving me the
Hubbard flying opportunity
– I will be forever grateful.
Thanks to Chris for all of your
organising and for choosing me,
and to Dave for getting me ready
to go solo.”
Said Armani’s mother Serena:
“I was nervous and scared but,
above all, just so excited for him.
He’s worked so hard and been so
determined to make his dream
of being a pilot come true and
this is an amazing step towards
that goal.”

Contractor soon sought for
Bromley redevelopment
THE CITY council is on track
to have a contract awarded for
the redevelopment of an odorous
organics processing plant in
Bromley by the middle of the
year.
Late last year the city council
decided to spend $21.5 million
redeveloping the plant to remove
the possibility of offensive and
objectionable dust and odour
travelling beyond the facility’s
boundary.
It comes after the city council
was served an abatement notice
from Environment Canterbury in
February requiring that it must
stop discharging the offensive
odour by January next year.
This week the procurement
plan for the project was approved
by the city council’s finance and
performance committee, clearing
the way for a request for proposal
to be released in the coming
weeks to selected contractors.
“We expect to be in a position
to select a preferred contractor
for the redevelopment in June
and to have the contract finalised
in July,’’ said city council resource
recovery manager Ross Trotter.
“We will then be in a position
to give the community firm timelines
for when work will begin
and how long it is likely to take
to complete the redevelopment
work.
“It is our expectation that work
will begin on site this year.’’
The redevelopment will involve
upgrading 18 aerated tunnels
where organic waste is turned
into compost, building a new,
fully-ventilated structure to
enclose the outside area where
compost is matured and screened
and upgrading the biofilter.
A community meeting where
Bromley residents can ask questions
about the redevelopment of
the organics processing plant will
be held at ECan’s Tuam St offices
on April 6, 6.30-8pm.
ECan staff, the city council
and Living Earth will be at the
meeting to answer residents’
questions.
New Linwood pool on track
for end of year opening
LINWOOD’S NEW pool
complex is starting to take shape.
The walls and roof of Te Pou
Toetoe: Linwood Pool have
gone up and contractors, Apollo
Projects Ltd, are now focusing
on constructing the inside of the
$22 million complex.
All the pools are in place and
the rooms are now being built.
There will be a multi-use 25m
lane pool, a deep-water manu/
splash pool, a family spa pool,
learn-to-swim pool, and a pool
for toddlers and water deck. It
will also have community meeting
rooms and a kitchen.
“Work on the facility is progressing
really well and we’re on
track to have it open later this
year,’’ city council head of recreation,
sports and events Nigel
Cox said.
“We’ve started recruiting for
team leaders for the facility and
will advertise for frontline workers
– lifeguards, fitness instructors
and customer service people
– in May and June.
“We’re taking bookings now.
RESOURCE: Construction of the new Linwood swimming
pool is progressing.
Any groups that we haven’t
already spoken to who are
interested in booking space at Te
Pou Toetoe when it opens should
email the team to register their
interest. This will help us plan
how Te Pou Toetoe operates.
“Later this year, we will also
start taking bookings for

ESTUARY MATTERS
Fussy plant that has links to Captain Cook
The Avon-Heathcote Estuary Ihutai Trust
is a non-profit organisation formed to
protect one of New Zealand’s most
important coastal wetlands. Each week,
board members will discuss matters
regarding the estuary, its rich history
and what makes it unique. This week
manager Tanya Jenkins writes about a
trial to save native grass from extinction
THE ESTUARY trust is not
just encouraging estuary and
wetland restoration projects
for the protection of the
many bird species we can
find there.
Healthy and thriving
native plants are equally
important, for example.
Let’s look at a historically
famous plant – the Cook’s
Scurvy Grass, or known by
its Maori name “Nau.”
One of the famous stories
of Captain James Cook was
his ability to keep his crew
relatively healthy by feeding
them “greens” to ward off
scurvy that killed so many
sailors at the time.
Captain Cook was
renowned for his leadership
skills, and in particular for
sailing around the world
without losing a single
man to scurvy, for which he
won the Copley Medal in
1776.
He understood that fresh
food, and in particular fresh
greens, acted as an antiscorbutic
in keeping away
the scurvy disease.
Captain Cook and many
other earlier sailors used to
harvest huge amounts of
this plant from New Zealand
coastal areas.
But due to coastal
development, introduced
plants and animals, this
endemic (only found in
NZ) plant is now classed as
“threatened” and found only
sporadically throughout the
country.
In fact, now such a
concern for the threat of
its extinction, that the
Department of Conservation
prepared a Threatened Plant
Recovery Plan in 1998.
By trialling the
reintroduction of this plant
in a number of potentially
suitable areas it is hoped
that it will re-establish
itself.
Now, why is the estuary
trust so keen to share this
information?
Because we are so proud
to be able to share that this
plant has been introduced in
the Charlesworth Wetland
Reserve by DOC as a trial,
hoping it will survive and
thrive here.
And guess what? It’s
working. The few introduced
plants are doing well and is
spreading.
This fussy plant needs
gravelled, open coastal
areas, no competition from
introduced weeds, and
it needs to be occupied
regularly by seabirds who
leave the plant lots of guana,
or bird poo, to feed on.
The restored Charlesworth
Wetland islands are now
able to provide all this.
The grass Captain Cook used to gather to help prevent scurvy on his
ship.

HOME & HEATING
Ground moisture barrier
under low sub-floor
Now with the colder and wetter weather on
its way, home owners are focusing on ways
to make their homes comfortable, warm
and healthy for their families throughout
winter. Rising damp is an issue that affects
many of our older properties which suffer
from poor, or no, ground moisture barrier.
In Canterbury especially, post-quake, many
people have relocated to homes that suffer
from rising damp which can be associated
with health problems. Independent tests have
shown that up to 40 litres of water can rise
from the ground and enter a house every day,
leading to mildew, mould, condensation and
musty smells. Moulds can produce various
allergic reactions and the frail, elderly and
very young are especially vulnerable.
Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd is a
locally owned and operated firm. The team
understands the problems caused by rising
damp and are there to help. They will come
to your damp home and pump a lightweight,
flowable foam concrete under your timber
floored home.
While insulation is important, it has been
recognised that it is dampness that is the real
villain in the house. The new Healthy Homes
Standards introduced by the government
effective from the 1st July 2019 now has
a requirement to install ground moisture
barriers, a key element in the armory to fight
moisture in the home.
Dr Larry Bellamy BE (hons) PhD in a
report dated 1988: Foam Concrete Under
Timber Floors: An Energy Analysis assessed
the effects of placing Foam Concrete over
damp soil and had this to say: Condensation
on the underside of a timber floor can occur
where the floor is suspended over damp
ground and the inside air temperature falls
close to the crawl space air temperature.
Much energy is required to vaporize moisture
that penetrates the structure. By avoiding
underfloor condensation, foam concrete can
reduce floor heat losses by up to 90%.
• Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd can in most
cases, install a Ground Moisture Barrier
under the suspended wooden floor of your
home, even when there is no crawl space.
• BRANZ Appraised; Appraisal Number 961
• Members of the Insulation Association of
New Zealand.
• We offer a free measure and quote in the
Canterbury region with no obligations.
• Assessments can be made in all other
regions by arrangement.
Contact Canterbury Foam Concrete
Ltd now for your free, no obligation quote
and complimentary appraisal of your
underfloor ground moisture barrier needs.
Phone 03 376 4608, 0508FOAMCO or www.

Bathroom ventilation
The extraction of air from the bathroom
should be a priority for all houses and
commercial buildings.
Bathrooms can generate a large quantity
of steam and odours. It is important
this compromised air does not circulate
around the house.
Bathroom odours can be unpleasant,
especially when near living, sleeping or
working areas.
The moisture generated by showers and
baths can be damaging to your home and
furnishings and be a major contribution
to condensation. Damp houses are not a
healthy environment for anyone to live in,
especially for children or other vulnerable
people.
By extracting air from the bathroom to
outside, warmer air from inside the house
will move in to the bathroom. Whereas
opening a window can draw cold air
into the bathroom and blow the smelly,
moisture laden
bathroom air into
the house.
Modern houses
are built to be
very airtight and
require mechanical
ventilation such
as extraction fans
or heat exchanger
systems. Although
older houses can
be draughty, the air
often flows in the
wrong direction.
Therefore, they also
usually require mechanical ventilation to
keep the air quality higher.
The quality of the air we breathe affects
our health and ability to perform. We
breathe in and out approximately 20,000
litres of air every day. It is therefore very
important to ensure good air quality
indoors through adequate ventilation.
To ensure the quality of your air, contact
the experts. Smooth-Air Products can
calculate the required extraction for your
bathrooms, and look into air exchange for
your whole building. Smooth-Air offers a
wide range of ventilation equipment, from
air vents to ducting for fans, for both the
commercial and domestic markets.
They have an extensive range of
fans and ventilation components
in-store but they can also provide
innovative solutions tailored to differing
requirements. You can contact Smooth-
Air on 0800 SMOOTH (0800 766684).
