Half-price entry at Quake City during school holidays
Can you believe it’s been more than
a decade since we were rocked by the
Canterbury earthquakes?
Quake City, Canterbury Museum’s
special exhibition about the earthquakes,
located at 299 Durham Street North, is a
great spot to reflect on how life changed
in the wake of the quakes.
During the school holidays the Museum
is running a half-price special on entry to
Quake City. With accompanied children
under 15 free, Quake City is a fascinating
and affordable outing for all the family.
If your children are too young to
remember the earthquakes, Quake City
is a great place to teach them about the
earthquakes that have shaped their city.
See treasures rescued from the rubble
including the spire of ChristChurch
Cathedral and the Great Bell from the
Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament.
Learn about the science behind
earthquakes, play with the liquefaction
simulator and understand how streets
were buried and buildings sunk. Use
LEGO to design new buildings for
Christchurch.
Try to solve the puzzles on the activity
of courage and hope, and the science behind the quakes
299 DURHAM STREET NORTH
sheet and expend some energy jumping
on the spot to create a mini-quake for
the seismograph to read.
A portaloo door and a water container,
donated to a Sumner resident by a
farmer from West Melton, are reminders
of some of the everyday difficulties
many Canterbury residents faced in the
aftermath of 22 February 2011.
A recreation of Gap Filler’s bicyclepowered
cinema shows the many
imaginative projects that brought life
back into Christchurch’s empty spaces in
the early days after the quakes.
10.00 AM TO 5.00 PM DAILY
Fantastic school holiday event in Methven
Every year in the April school holidays the rural mid-
Canterbury town and ski village of Methven runs the
Methven Scarecrow Trail where participants hunt for the
scarecrows, try to guess the characters they represent
and vote for their favourite scarecrow creation. There are
sponsored prizes for most correct entries and best scarecrow.
Last year this popular event had to be postponed due
to Covid Level 4 lockdown and was held in the October
holidays instead. The organizers wanted to return the 2021
Scarecrow Trail to the April holidays slot but were concerned
that the scarecrow makers may be reluctant to launch into
creative mode again so soon.
The request for expressions of interest was sent out and
the organisers decided that if there were 20 entries, half of
the usual number of 40, then it would go ahead. There was
an immediate response indicating renewed support from the
sponsors, Four Square Supermarket, Brinkley Resort, Jackson
Holmes, Philip Wareing and the Methven Community Board.
This was quickly followed by a flurry of entries from many
previous scarecrow creators and a number of enthusiastic
entries from newcomers.
Did entries reach the required 20 entries? They surely did
and entries were oversubscribed within days. The organizers
have had to limit the entries to 40 scarecrow locations to
make the Trail manageable for participants.
So it is all on for the April school holidays:
