for hospice group<br />

Awhirlwindeightmonthswill<br />

be celebratedonSundaywhen<br />

Hospice Mid Canterbury<br />

officially opensits <strong>Ashburton</strong><br />

home.<br />

Theformer medical centre on<br />

Havelock Streetwas bought by<br />

hospice last September,with<br />

the group thenspeedfundraising<br />

$500,000 to cover<br />

the cost.<br />

Hospice manager Debbie<br />

Macklesaid the new homehad<br />

allowed it to grow andthe<br />

facility offeredarange of<br />

services forthose suffering<br />

from life­limiting illness.<br />

The home’s officialopening<br />

will be on Sunday, and the<br />

communityisinvited. Then<br />

nextweekisHospice<br />

Awareness Weekand more<br />

events are planned.<br />

MrsMackle said the home<br />

would be open to the public on<br />

Tuesday<strong>May</strong> 18, from10am<br />

until 3pm. People were<br />

encouraged to dropin,look<br />

around, chat to service<br />

providers and ask questions.<br />

On the Thursday, Barry<br />

Haymanwill speak at 10am<br />

about hisown cancer journey.<br />

On other days, hospice will hold<br />

its regular exercise,arts and<br />

crafts sessions.<br />

She saidithad beenabusy<br />

past six months and hospice<br />

staff had beenhumbled by<br />

support fromthe community.<br />

Theyare recruitingmore<br />

volunteers to be on reception<br />

dutiesasvisitornumbers were<br />

risingas more people accessed<br />

serviceslike massage and<br />

biography­writing.<br />

MrsMackle saidpeopleand<br />

familiesdealing with the endof<br />

alife were oftensocaught up in<br />

the journey theydidn’t know<br />

howtoreachout.<br />

‘‘We are educating the<br />

community that weare here to<br />

help, from the point of<br />

diagnosis.’’<br />

The officialopeningwill be at<br />

2.45pm on Sunday and special<br />

guests include <strong>Ashburton</strong><br />

districtmayor NeilBrownand<br />

hospice ambassador Jo Seagar.<br />

Acakecuttingceremony will<br />

follow,with timetosharea<br />

cuppa.<br />

Hospice does not receive<br />

governmentfunding, so the Mid<br />

Canterburygroup’s next event<br />

is Bubbles and BlingatTrott’s<br />

Gardens on <strong>May</strong> 29.<br />
