Flystrike in Rabbits<br />
Rabbits are particularly susceptible to flystrike if they are unable to keep themselves clean of urine<br />
and faeces. However, even healthy, active rabbits can get dirty bottoms from time to time.<br />
Obesity can make it very difficult for a rabbit to clean urine or faeces from its fur, and so can<br />
arthritis, which is made even more problematic by obesity. Painful dental problems can make a<br />
rabbit reluctant or unable to clean itself properly.<br />
Flystrike occurs when flies lay their eggs on an animal. The eggs hatch into maggots, which eat<br />
the flesh of the animal they are on. During hot weather maggots are more active and develop<br />
more rapidly. When the maggots begin to feast on the flesh of that animal, the results can be<br />
catastrophic. It only takes a few hours from flies laying eggs, to maggots hatching and eating into<br />
a rabbit's flesh. Once they are established, huge damage can be done and many rabbits don't<br />
recover.<br />
How to prevent flystrike:<br />
‣ In the summer months especially, rabbits must be checked at least twice per day. If their<br />
bottom is dirty, wash with warm water and a shampoo for small pets. Rinse thoroughly and<br />
dry as the smell of damp fur can attract flies too!<br />
‣ Soiled bedding and litter must be removed regularly, preferably daily. Left in the rabbit's<br />
home, it will attract flies and will itself soil fur.<br />
‣ Apply a preparation to your rabbit's fur that will prevent fly eggs from hatching.<br />

If your rabbit gets flystrike this is an emergency. You need to get your rabbit to your vet<br />
immediately. Its life is in danger and it will be in great pain.<br />
