LandscapePARCO ROMANAA disused railway yard in Milan sets to become a park and an Olympic VillageMilan’s industrial Porta Romana Districtwill see a major transformation withan urban-scale green redevelopmentproject ‘Parco Romana.’ The project isthe winning competition entry designedby an international team that includesOUTCOMIST, Diller Scofidio + Renfro, PLPArchitecture, Carlo Ratti Associati (CRA) and Arup.In celebration of the industrial legacy of the site, theproposal reanimates disused infrastructure with contemporary,ecologically-minded programming. Most notably, the scheme willreclaim a large railway yard that has divided the area for morethan a century, introducing a new green park and connectivetissue linking the area to the city centre.Public RealmMilan’s Parco Romana itself will form a unique topographicfeature extending over the active railway that currently bisectsthe site, creating an accessible and multi-functional green spacefor the neighbourhood. The suspended forest – a linear elevatedgreenway that helps to contain, rather than erase, existingrailway infrastructure – includes hundreds of trees providingdedicated walking routes with unexpected views overlooking thesurrounding area. A biodiverse woodland and wetland eco-zoneinterspersed with community gardens runs alongside the tracksat grade, offering a range of communal activities focused onhealth and well-being while dovetailing with Milan’s Rotaie Verdienvironmental network.Framing these open spaces, a series of urban blocks with36 May-June 2021 | www.b-i.biz
