Dear Reader
Time is just racing along
at such a speed lately
that I am wondering
where days, weeks and
months have gone? It is now
June and cannot believe it.
However, it is said that when you
are enjoying life time speeds along at a
quicker pace ha!
Why is the Sixth Month Called June?
The first is that the month is named after
the Roman goddess Juno, the goddess
of marriage. The second is that the name
comes from the Latin word iuniores,
meaning “younger ones”. It also may
have been called “sere-month, meaning
“dry and withered,” though this term may
have meant June, July or August.
Wimbledon tennis. Let’s hope that
Wimbledon will be back this summer,
with the best tennis players in the world
competing on the grass courts, in front of
passionate spectators. Limited seating no
doubt due to the restrictions.
The weather is often a topic of
conversation and this is of no exception
now as summer is here. It is the most
excellent time of the year when dining
“al fresco” is at its best. The cool evenings
and the eagerness, which comes with the
holiday passion of the tourists, family and
friends and more people arriving, creates an
exciting atmosphere. Spain offers so much
with its sandy beaches, lively markets,
several golf courses and great restaurants.
A fiesta is a party, a celebration, a thanks
giving. To a Spaniard, it symbolises the
town in which they were born: its Patron
Saint; its culture. Therefore fiestas are
important places, to individuals and to
DEAR READER
families. There are so many
wonderful fiestas celebrated in the
Costa Blanca that you are bound
to see one whatever time of year,
hopefully if restrictions are lifted.
Rose is the flower of this month.
Though roses are available in many
colours from red to pink to white to yellow,
all with their own special meanings, the
underlying message the flowers convey is
that of Love and Devoted Affection.
June birthdays claim two birthstones;
pearl and Alexandrite. Pearls have been
wildly popular in jewellery for centuries
because of their natural beauty. Alexandrite
gemstones are extremely rare and desirable
since they change colour based on the
lighting.
The two zodiac signs associated with
the month of June are the Gemini and
Cancer. For those born from June 1st
to June 20th, they are members of the
Gemini zodiac sign. Social, talkative and
familiar with trends, and is one of the most
outgoing zodiac signs. While these traits
of the Gemini sign can make them a lot
to handle, their charisma and intelligence
is also refreshing, and their magnetism is
irresistible.
Have a great and enjoyable “Summer
Time”.
Remember you are never alone with
a copy of Out & About Costa Blanca
magazine. Keep cool and happy. Until next
time.
Moraira, Benissa, Benitache
Yes, you read that correctly, despite
the current health situation, we’re
back to selling properties just like
yours and we have a growing list of
enquiries from people to buy right
here in the Northern Costa Blanca. In
fact, its even been recently reported
in the British Press that overseas
enquiries are 30% up compared to
last year with people wanting to get
out of the UK before Brexit.
Of course it’s been tough for
businesses since March, but we’re
taking this opportunity to look
inwards and see how we can
improve to meet our simple goal:
to sell your property as quickly as
possible whilst achieving the highest
price.
When it comes to Javea, we have
decided to move offices and will
soon be re-opening in an even
better location to be able to serve
buyers and sellers even better. So,
yes, the port office is closed, but
keep your eyes out for a new office
opening soon!
You might be wondering about
pricing, and rightly so. We’re
pleased to note that whilst we’re

We’re back to doing what we do
best which is selling property.
We’ve got the staff, we’ve got the
JUNE
Please note that all events in 2021
may be subject to change due to
Covid-19 restrictions.
Spain offers so much especially in June.
Everything is on your door step, as such,
or travel a short enjoyable distance. Here
are a few “food for Thought” ideas to soak
up some happy times visiting local events.
The 2021 International Music festival
Moraira is being held next to Moraira
Castle in June. The event starts at 6pm
and features 7 different live acts for you
to enjoy. If you are visiting the Moors &
Christians Fiesta in Moraira this year,
come and enjoy this fantastic evening of
live music.
The “Fogueres San Juan de la Cometa” is
a Fiesta in Calpe, which is held normally
towards the end of on June and has been
printed 23rd June 2021. The Night of San
Juan is celebrated in Calpe as the shortest
night of the year and summer solstice.
Many associated cultural rituals make this
Amazing Events
in June
fiesta one of the highlights of the Calpe
fiesta experience. This is the night of the
summer solstice ritual. The next night, the
24th of June, is the eve of San Juan Bautista,
the patron saint of La Cometa. Bonfires are
built up out of old wooden furniture and
are lit during the night in celebration of
the forthcoming summer. Again subject to
confirmation.
Moraira/Teulada. Corpus Christi, Moors
& Christians Fiesta - Main Gala Parade
San Juan Bonfires again it is scheduled
for June subject to confirmation.
Why not spend your time in the port in
Alicante exploring the delights of Villena,
tours might be available. Explore Atalaya
Castle — widely considered to be Villena’s
most important attraction — also normally
there is available a private guide and you
can gain insight into the region’s rich
history. Head onward to a local winery and
olive grove, and tour the bottling rooms,
cellars and vineyards as a guide sheds
light on the grape varietals thriving in the
region’s fertile soils. Sample delicious local
wines accompanied by Iberian ham during
a tasting session then return in comfort to
Alicante.
Campello and Villajoyosa Villages Trip
from Benidorm with Visit to a Chocolate
Factory. Campello and Villajoyosa tempt
visitors to explore their resort-worthy
beaches, Roman ruins, and Mediterranean
scenery. A private guided tour of these
towns from Benidorm lets you learn
about the towns’ attractions with ultimate
comfort and ease. However,,..check as
again subject to confirmation.
Or drive to the city of Campello. Learn
about the town’s history as a Roman

JUNE 2021 | 9
settlement wanted by pirates and Christian
pioneers alike. Excursions usually are
available.
Next, continue to the village of Villajoyosa.
Tour a chocolate factory and museum and
then see the spots where Barbary pirates
once attacked the coast. All these are ideas
to help you think of a day exploring.
Benidorm on our door step. Lovely place to
visit. Traditional area of Benidorm situated
near church and local bars. Wonderful
place to take scenic photos because of high
location overlooking both beaches and it’s
always nice to chill out in some of the bars
there. Then there is the old town to visit
and enjoy the great views across the bay
and the old town has some excellent Tapas
bars.
Visit the vibrant Mediterranean port city
of Valencia, a must-see city. Or travel from
Costa Blanca in air-conditioned comfort
without the stress of navigation. This way
you can enjoy plenty of free time to explore
at your leisure.
Just a short journey from the Costa Blanca,
Valencia is a must-see Spanish city known
for its architecture and dining scene. You
could arrange to go on this tour, you’ll
travel by coach from Benidorm or Albir to
Torres de Serranos, located in the centre
of Valencia, in air-conditioned comfort,
without the hassle of advance planning.
From here, spend the day independently
exploring the city at your own pace and
prioritize the sights you want to see.
However, should you decide to go by train
or your own transport still will make a
good day exploring.
June is an excellent month for festivals,
both Andalucia and Catalonia have a lot
going on and Madrid and Barcelona offer
city backdrops for lots of festival fun.
Some of the June festivals in Spain include
the Grec Performance Arts, Barcelona’s
Sonar festival as well as the strange ham
and water festival in Granada. However
for beach lovers the night of Saint John
(Noche de San Juan) is a special night
spent on the beach with friends enjoying
bonfires, music and fun, however again
check that this event will take place as this
could be subject to restrictions.
Usually celebrated the last weekend in June
each year up and down the coastal areas
of Spain most notably in Andalucia this
ancient pagan festival is now legendary
however hopefully these festivals will
be able to take place. The Grec festival
in Barcelona. The festival is one of the
highlights of the summer attractions in
Barcelona as well as the annual calendar
of the European performing arts. All
the shows are well organised largely by
private sector theatre promoters. The
festival’s name is derived from the venue
Greek theatre which was built to host the
Mount Montjuïc Universal Exhibition in
1929.
Some 80,000 visitors each year make it
to this prestigious festival to take in the
splendour of multimedia arts and live
music concerts. The main celebrations of
the Sonar Music Festival are held around
the Raval District where you will also
find the Museum of Modern Art and
the Contemporary Culture Centre. All
electronic music lovers should not miss this
because apart from the big international
acts, experimental artists also get a chance
to share the concert.
In June there is a platform on local events as
well as travelling through Spain. Perhaps
just sit back on the terrace, or relax near
a swimming pool, or on one of the many
splendid beaches and read a copy of Out &
About magazine. Enjoy your June.
My Husband has made a decision that we
should return to the UK and proposes to uproot
my son and daughter, who have only attended
school in Spain, and who are virtually Spanish.
He has a notion that we are returning back for a
better future, but for whom? He is able to work
online anywhere so where we are doesn’t matter
to him, but my life is very much here on the
Costa Blanca.
June: Alcalali
Hi June,
June, such an upheaval as changing home
and returning to a Country you and your
family hardly know anymore should
surely be up for discussion. You are not
your husband’s goods and chattels but
a part of a family that has lived here in
Spain for many years by the sounds of it.
There has to be dialogue, organisation and
very sensitive planning to bring about
any changes that only he appears to want,
anyway. Whether you are blamed for
digging your heels into the sand or not, it is
a question of a joint decision that embraces
the well being of all four of you and which
surely merits examining things more
closely than relocating on a whim.
My father has taken a girlfriend as a final
defiant gesture of trying to find his youth,
at the grand age of 80 years old. This
woman seems to have taken him over and
she is now making decisions that will affect
my future and that of my sister. We are very
happy that he has found someone special
to share his golden years with, but we will
not be manipulated, neither should our
relationship with our dear Father have to
change in any way.
Georgi: Relleu
If your Father has decided to take the
step of marrying his girlfriend then
there could be changes in the family
pecking order and you should be very
focussed on what these mean to you
as the two family members closest to
him currently by ties of inheritance.
Presumably you should be having
a meeting with your Father face to
face to discuss what the implications
are for the future. If you want that
this girlfriend makes your father
happy and genuinely cares for him
then she has the potential to become
financially rewarded by him on his
passing on, if she becomes his wife. The
silence and the not knowing could be
devastating to a situation that should
not be allowed to go out of control, but
which means, simply, that four adults
should meet up to talk freely and raise
any issues now, whilst you are all on
speaking terms. There is work to be
done here to keep a peace that embraces
the true wishes of your Father, and he
will adequately respond so that you
know best your future stances.

AGONY UNCLE JUNE 2021 | 11
I have uncontrollable pain as a byproduct
of my diabetes and I am not a good sleeper
anyway. I just dread another hot Summer
of pain and never enough rest.
Sonia: Benitachell
Sonia, I am sorry to hear that you
have referred pain as a result of your
diabetes. However you do need to
urgently discuss medications that
would help you to get the good night’s
rest that you so deserve. You may get
some help by looking at alternative
medicines too, and then applying them
into your life with a view to relieving
pain and getting a full night’s sleep
each night. This does not mean that
you become a zombie, or look towards
your medication as anything more
than assisting your immediate medical
needs and restoring natural sleep,
so that you can live a better quality
of life; and remove pain from the
agenda as a natural right. Schedule an
appointment with your Doctor, who
has pledged to keep you both alive and
well and who can discuss with you the
alternatives of successful pain relief
and the many options open to you right
now. Considerable research examines
pain control and there are many new
medications out there that will surely
help to steer you without pain through
the long hot summer ahead.
Different types of low vision devices also can
help in different circumstances:
• A student might need a camera-like telescopic
device attached to a portable video camera
magnifier to capture an image at the front
of the classroom. That image then can be
enlarged on a monitor on the student’s
desktop.
• A mechanic might benefit from
a magnifier mounted on
prescription eyeglasses, so
that hands remain free to
work.
• A handheld magnifier
is portable and easy to
use when needs are
simple. As an example,
handheld magnifiers
are ideal for checking
product labels at the
grocery store or quickly
looking over the mail.
“There is a lot of confusion
about the size of devices and
the power they have,” says Lylas
G. Mogk, MD, founding director of the
Visual Rehabilitation and Research Center of
the Henry Ford Health System in Detroit.
“Often people will say, ‘Well, this one is a 3x
and that one is a 6x. So I want the one that’s a
6x.’ But the disadvantage of magnifiers with
higher power is that you then see a much
smaller area,” she says. “As a general rule,
you want the magnifier with the least power
you can get away with, in exchange for the
largest area you are able to see.”
If you are an avid reader, you will find that
simple magnifiers are inadequate to help
you sustain the concentration needed for an
extended time period.
Guide to magnifiers
for low vision
patients - Part II
DR. M. ISABEL SIGNES-SOLER
Which magnifiers work best in different circumstances?
A small, handheld magnifier greatly enlarges a
few words or sentences on a page. But reading
something like a novel requires an expanded
field of view and the ability to scan ahead in
order to see and process information quickly.
Another limitation of handheld magnifiers
is that they can’t be used for task-specific
activities such as knitting, which requires
both hands to be free. In this case, you
would need a magnifier on a stand
that can be easily positioned
where you need it.
If you are buying a handheld
magnifier or a magnifier
on a stand, you might be
interested in extra features
such as:
• Built-in lighting
that can help you see
better.
• “Gooseneck”
attachments in stand
magnifiers that can be easily
moved and adjusted to whatever
position you need.
• Various lenses and powers in the same device,
so you achieve just the right magnification at
the precise distance you need.
Also, you may think high-powered reading
glasses are the best solution for all your needs.
But these types of low vision glasses limit you
to seeing objects at a fixed distance that could
be less than a foot from your nose.
Dr. Mogk says the best reading tool for virtually
anyone with vision loss is a video camera
magnifier. These devices use video cameras that
focus on items of your choice and then magnify
them on a screen or monitor.
Some features to look for in video camera
magnifiers include:

DR. M. ISABEL SIGNES-SOLER JUNE 2021 | 15
• Autofocus
• Color and black-and-white displays
• Ergonomics allowing ease of use
• Glare and contrast control
• Compatibility with computers and computer
screens
• Screen size that best meets needs
• Portability
• Memory settings
With video camera magnifier technology, people
may benefit from glasses that focus at this
intermediate distance.
Bioptic telescopes require considerable
concentration and quick reaction times
This month
discounts on
frames and
sunglasses
up to
70%
for driving, which means they aren’t for
everyone. Each state specifies whether such
devices can be used and — if so — what level
of vision is required to be a candidate for this
device.
“Some of these high-end telescopes that are
commonly prescribed may be ideal for
students and young people.
Dr. Jackson said telescopes clearly are an
advantage for magnifying objects that are far
away, in the same way that bird watchers and
opera fans use binoculars.
“But all telescopes decrease the area you
see, and they all decrease the light,” says
Dr. Jackson. “So if you have poor contrast
sensitivity to begin with, you could have a lot
of trouble looking through a telescope.”
Television viewing is the most common use for
telescopes, when people prefer not to move
closer to the screen for a better view.
JOHN CURTIS
Hello again and a warm welcome
to this month´s All Time Greats
which is the continuation and
completion of my review on the late and
infamous Phil Spector. We left off last
month in 1966 and him taking a break
from production following the failure of
his work with Ike and Tina Turner notably
the lack of recognition in the US for the
epic “River Deep Mountain High.” Phil
lay low for four years during which he
got married to Veronica Bennett the lead
singer of The Ronettes and he did show
up on the set of the film Easy Rider in 1969
and played a cameo role as a drug dealer.
A dabble back in the studio in late 1969
lead to the next spell of working behind
a mixing desk. American Alan Klein who
had taken over managing The Beatles at
PHIL SPECTOR - PART II
the very troubled end of their era thought
that Phil could add something to John
Lennon´s solo song “Instant Karma” and
invited him over to the UK. Produced by
Phil Spector the song was a number 3 hit
in early 1970 and a working relationship
was forged with both John Lennon and
George Harrison. The recent success of
the Abbey Road LP made The Beatles
wonder if their earlier and disharmonious
Let It Be recordings, shelved a year earlier,
might yet yield some fruit and it was John
& George who invited Phil to remix and
overdub these tracks very much against
the wishes of Paul McCartney who, on
this occasion, was outvoted. The Let It Be
album, released as The Beatles swansong
in the spring of 1970, had the Spector
hallmark “Wall Of Sound” all over it to

JOHN CURTIS
JUNE 2021 | 17
John & George´s satisfaction
but not to Paul who
particularly hated the
huge orchestral and
vocal overdubs to his
song “The Long &
Winding Road.” Phil´s
good relationship
with John & George
continued for a few years
and he produced their
early solo albums which
included the mega hits “Imagine”
and “My Sweet Lord.” This apparent
crest of a wave was soon undermined
by an increasing use of drugs and
Phil´s growing reputation for unstable
behaviour and unreliability. First George
sacked him and then after a wild rant
during a recording session with John in
which a gun was drawn and fired into
the ceiling their relationship ended too.
The seeds for the murder of actress Lana
Clarkson in 2003 and a life sentence were
very apparent some 30 years earlier!
Another hiatus followed punctuated
by working on a Dion album to mixed
reviews in 1975 and finally working with
Leonard Cohen and The Ramones in
1979. In both cases the results were not
acclaimed and rumours have abounded
about Phil´s growing instability and
fondness for toting a gun in the recording
studio. Perhaps his last chance of a
healthy mind was lost in 1974 when he
went through the windscreen of his car
in an accident and nearly lost his life. Ex
wife Ronnie´s account of her life with him
also makes harrowing reading. After The
Ramones very few people wished to work
with him so he lived off his royalties in
increasing seclusion until the tragic
event of 2003 reminded people
he was still alive. The rest is
history as they say and Phil´s
legacy , despite his obvious
considerable talents, is one
of public revulsion for the
monster he became.
Before closing may I tell you
my own news?
Magic Travel
Moments
Highlight those (many) travel moments in
my life when things have ‘sparkled’.
by John
DAVID MOORHOUSE.
Up at Zekia
In the uplands of Southern
Greece there lies an empty
field surrounded on three
sides by thick woodlands and
edged by a narrow country
road.
The feeling of empty
landscape is underlined by the
skeletal ruins of a roofless, twostorey
house set well back from
the road with gaps in its walls
where doors and windows
once looked onto the field.
A single, large tree stands
guard close by while southfacing
mountains gaze upon
the silent scene.
An old friend, a senior
member of the family who once
lived in the house, and who still
own it and the surrounding
land, leads me into what was
once the downstairs of the
house.
I sense that my friend’s
family, going back generations,
are still here, downstairs,
upstairs, living, eating,
sleeping, working the land.
They have not gone away....
and neither can I.... never!

TARRAGONA - THE ROMAN AQUEDUCT
Radiating Power and Stability (two highly
relevant concepts in today’s world), built
almost 2,000 years ago, the Aqueduct is
both massive and dream-like, solid and
surreal, a symbol of life and death.
As a monument to Ancient Roman
engineering it speaks eloquently and
exhibits a multi-dimensional creativity.
In total contrast we enter a nearby,
dingy Bar, some dirty glasses lying
around on two small tables, and sit
down on rickety chairs. There is no
ventilation to relieve the oppressive
heat of mid-summer.
Drinking cheap wine and munching
on oily crisps I feel a strong link to the
Ancient Roman-ized population of this
part of Spain as it too must have sought to
forget the heat of mid-summer.
The Aqueduct and the Bar remain in my
heart.
Non-Communication
by John David Moorhouse.
They travel the same road,
one going east, the other west,
but neither knows which view’s best.
All comes into focus when they collide
on a stretch of road un-straight, not wide.
Communication now takes place, face to face....
neither showing respect or grace.
Words are fierce and few,
each ignoring the other’s view.
“This was your fault, not mine!”
“Don’t talk rubbish, you ignored the line!
Now I’m late for a big date!”
“It’ll just have to wait!”
“Yea - great!”
Was this all that was said?
Yes.... each shot the other dead!

LOS VILEROS WIN THE RC L´HOSPITALET AT THE
BEGINNING OF THE SECOND RETURN
June 1st Birthday - Marilyn Monroe
(1926-1962) was born in Los Angeles
(as Norma Jean Mortensen). Following
an unstable childhood spent in foster
homes and orphanages, she landed
a job as a photographer’s model
which led to a movie career. She later
married baseball legend Joe DiMaggio.
Beneath her glamorous movie star
looks she was fragile and insecure and
eventually succumbed to the pressures
of Hollywood life. She died in Los
Angeles from an overdose of sleeping
pills on August 5, 1962. Best known
for Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953),
The Seven Year Itch (1955), Bus Stop
(1956), Some Like It Hot (1959), and
The Misfits (1961).
June 3, 1937 - The Duke of Windsor
married Wallis Warfield Simpson in
Monts, France. As King Edward VIII,
he had abdicated the British throne in
December of 1936 amid tremendous
controversy to marry Simpson, an
American who had been divorced.
Following the wedding, the couple
lived in France and had minimal
contact with the British Royal family.
The Duke died in Paris on May 28,
1972, and was buried near Windsor
Castle in England.
June 4, Birthday - King George
III (1738-1820) was born. He ruled
England for 60 years from 1760 to 1820
and was the British King against whom
the American Revolution was directed.
June 5, 1783 - The first sustained
flight occurred as a hot-air balloon
was launched at Annonay, France,
by brothers Joseph and Jacques
Montgolfier. Their 33-foot-diameter
globe aerostatique ascended about
6,000 feet. In September, they repeated
the experiment for King Louis XVI,
using a sheep, rooster and duck as the
balloon’s passengers.
June 5, 1968 - Robert F. Kennedy was
shot and mortally wounded while
leaving the Hotel Ambassador in Los
Angeles. The shooting occurred after
a celebration of Kennedy’s victory in
the California presidential primary.
He died at 1:44 a.m., June 6, at age
42, leaving behind his wife Ethel and
eleven children, the last one born after
his death.
June 6, 1944 - D-Day, the largest
amphibious landing in history, began
in the early-morning hours as Allied
forces landed in Normandy on the
northern coast of France. Operation
Overlord took months of planning
and involved 1,527,000 soldiers in 47
Allied divisions along with 4,400 ships
and landing craft, and 11,000 aircraft.
The Germans had about 60 divisions
spread along France and the Low
Countries. American forces landed
on two western beaches, Utah and
Omaha, while British and Canadian
troops landed farther east on Gold,
Juno and Sword beaches. By the end
of the day 150,000 Allied soldiers
and their accompanying vehicles
had landed with 15,000 killed and
wounded.
June 9, 1898 - The British signed a 99-
year lease for Hong Kong, located on
the southeastern coast of China. Hong
Kong, consisting of an area measuring
400 square miles, was administered as
a British Crown Colony until July 1,
1997, when its sovereignty reverted to
the People’s Republic of China.
Birthday - Composer and lyricist Cole
Porter (1893-1964) was born in Peru,
Indiana. He published his first song
The Bobolink Waltz at the age of ten.
His Broadway career was launched
in 1928 when five of his songs were
used in the musical play Let’s Do It.
Among his many contributions to
the Broadway stage; Fifty Million
Frenchmen, The Gay Divorcee,
Anything Goes, Leave It to Me, Du
Barry Was a Lady, Something for the
Boys, Kiss Me Kate, Can Can and Silk
Stockings.
June 10, 1942 - In one of the most
infamous single acts of World War II
in Europe, all 172 men and boys over
age 16 in the Czech village of Lidice
were shot by Nazis in reprisal for the
assassination of SS leader Reinhard
Heydrich. The women were deported
to Ravensbrück concentration camp
where most died. Ninety young
children were sent to the concentration
camp at Gneisenau, with some later
taken to Nazi orphanages if they were
German looking. The village was then
completely leveled until not a trace
remained.
June 10 Birthday - Judy Garland
Minnesota (as Frances Gumm). She
is best remembered for her portrayal
of Dorothy Gale in The Wizard of
Oz (1939) and other films including
Meet Me in St. Louis (1944) and Easter
Parade (1948). She became one of the
most popular concert performers of
records in New York City and London.
She was found dead of an overdose
of sleeping pills in London on June
MEMORY LANE
June 12 Birthday - George Bush, the
41st U.S. President, was born in Milton,
Massachusetts, June 12, 1924. During
World War II, he became the youngest
pilot in the U.S. Navy. Following
the war, he co-founded a Texas oil
equipment manufacturing company.
He then entered politics, serving in a
variety of roles including in the U.S.
Congress, the United Nations, as
U.S. liaison to China, C.I.A. director,
and two terms as vice-president
under Ronald Reagan. Elected to
the presidency in 1988, President
Bush is best remembered for forging
a successful multinational military
alliance following the invasion of
Kuwait on August 2, 1990, by Saddam
Hussein’s Iraqi army. However,
following the defeat of Iraq, Bush was
beset by domestic problems in the U.S.
which resulted in a significant drop
in popularity and his loss in the 1992
election to Bill Clinton.
June 12 Birthday - Anne Frank
(1929-1945) was born in Frankfurt,
Germany. She is perhaps the best
known victim of the Nazi Holocaust.
Anne and her family moved from
Germany to Amsterdam to flee Nazi
persecution, then went into hiding in a
small attic after Holland was invaded
by Nazis. Anne, a girl on the verge of
womanhood, was unable to go outside
for any reason. In 1942, she began
a diary to cope with the boredom,
fear, annoyances, and loneliness of
captivity. Her family’s hiding place
was eventually discovered and Anne
and her family were deported to Nazi
concentration camps. She contracted
typhus and died at Bergen-Belsen
in 1945. After the war, her father
published her diary, which inspired
the world, revealing a young woman
who had managed to remain hopeful,
despite it all.
June 14. Birthday - German
psychiatrist and pathologist Alois
Alzheimer (1864-1915) was born
in Markbreit am Mainz, Germany.
In 1907, he published an article
first describing ‘Alzheimers,’ a
degenerative disease, usually
beginning at age 40-60, affecting nerve
cells of the brain and leading to severe
memory impairment and progressive
loss of mental faculties.
June 16, 1963 - Valentina Tereshkova,
26, became the first woman in space
as her Soviet spacecraft, Vostok 6, took
off from the Tyuratam launch site. She
manually controlled the spacecraft
completing 48 orbits in 71 hours before
landing safely.
June 17, 1972 - Following a seemingly
routine burglary, five men were
arrested at the National Democratic
Headquarters in the Watergate
complex in Washington, D.C. However,
subsequent investigations revealed the
burglars were actually agents hired
by the Committee for the Re-election
of President Richard Nixon. A long
chain of events then followed in which
the president and top aides became
involved in an extensive cover-up of
this and other White House sanctioned
illegal activities, eventually leading to
the resignation of President Nixon on
August 9, 1974.
June 18, 1983 - Dr. Sally Ride, a
32-year-old physicist and pilot, became
the first American woman in space,
beginning a six-day mission aboard
the space shuttle Challenger, launched
from Cape Canaveral, Florida.
MAY 2021 | 23
June 20. Birthday - American military
hero and actor Audie Murphy (1924-
1971) was born in Kingston, Texas.
He was the most decorated American
soldier of World War II, awarded 37
medals and decorations, including
the Medal of Honor for singlehandedly
turning back a German
infantry company by climbing on a
burning U.S. tank destroyer and firing
its .50-cal. machine gun, killing 50
Germans. He later became an actor in
western and war movies and made
45 films including; The Red Badge of
Courage (1951), Destry (1954), and
To Hell and Back (1955), based on
his autobiography. He died May 28,
1971, in a plane crash near Roanoke,
Virginia.
June 25, 1876 - General George A.
Custer, leading 250 men, attacked an
encampment of Sioux Indians near
Little Bighorn River in Montana.
Custer and his men were then
attacked by 2000-4000 Indian braves.
Only one scout and a single horse
survived ‘Custer’s Last Stand’ on
the Little Bighorn Battlefield. News
of the humiliating defeat infuriated
Americans and led to all out war.
Within a year, the Sioux Indians were a
broken and defeated nation.
June 30, 1971 - The 26th Amendment
to the U.S. Constitution was enacted,
granting the right to vote in all federal,
state and local elections to American
citizens 18 years or older. The U.S. thus
gained an additional 11 million voters.
The minimum voting age in most
states had been 21.
June 30, 1997 - In Hong Kong, the
flag of the British Crown Colony was
officially lowered at midnight and
replaced by a new flag representing
China’s sovereignty and the official
transfer of power.

28 | OUT AND ABOUT COSTA BLANCA DEE’S TRAVELS
DEE’S TRAVELS
LIVING ABROAD –
GETTING THERE
I
started my globetrotting life in 1974,
yes, I’m really that old, just as I began
my writing career using a manual
typewriter – and I still can’t type without
looking at the keyboard. On social media
I’m known as the queen of typos. But
back to the travel, even in those mists of
time we left one country and arrived in
another by air.
I know some people are scared of
flying, but I love it. In fact, I can be very
badly behaved on aircraft, reacting like a
kid in a candy store.
My first experience was a trip from
London to Dublin for my grandfather’s
funeral. I’m sure, if there had been
enough time, we would have floated
over the Irish Sea by boat as before, but
time was not on our side.
My mother was absolutely terrified, I
think it must have been her first flight,
but I loved it and remember feeling very
superior as I sat calmly holding her hand
as I described everything I could see out
of the window. For some strange reason
she didn’t appear to be enjoying my
travel commentary, and my hand was
sore and bruised for days after.
My next airborne trip was to France,
where I was wedged into a tiny seat on a
Dan Air prop plane, next to a generously
proportioned lady holding an equally
large cactus on her lap. I arrived covered
in tiny pin pricks all over my hands and
wrists. It was my turn to sit rigid as the
plant life attacked me with every lurch in
the turbulent air pockets.
Flying to African of course, they
provided much larger aircraft, with dogeared
magazines to read, as much to eat
and drink as you could consume and
delightful packages of goodies. They
gave you socks, an eye shade, mouth
freshener, eye mist spray, ear plugs
and an assortment of creams and nice
smelly stuff to plaster all over yourself.
And too, they thoughtfully provided
a tiny toothbrush and paste and moist
refreshing wipes.
Before you even took off, they offered
a range of free newspapers, baskets of
boiled sweets, a steaming hot towel
proffered in tongs and, in those days
they hurried back to collect them, they
didn’t leave you immersed in a pile of
rubbish until the end of the flight. These
days, if you miss that black, plastic bag
as it speeds down the aisle, you’re out of
luck. On a bad day it’s like sitting in the
local rubbish dump.
I remember having the ability to open
the dinky food containers and eat before
https://lucindaeclarkeauthor.com

DEE’S TRAVELS
MAY 2021 | 29
we land. Nowadays the little foil pots
have been hermetically sealed by some
demented food workers out to ensure
you starve between London and Tokyo.
Should you be lucky enough to have
your favourite Stanley knife secreted
on your body that escaped the customs
search, you may be able to access your
lunch or dinner, but it’s more likely you
spread it all over the passenger in front
of you, the cabin roof and any passing
cabin crew. They get quite cross with
you, I should know.
I love airports too. All those wide-open
spaces, nearly always clean, with bright
twinkly lights and people rushing to and
fro. Being sensitive, I can almost taste the
vibrations of ecstasy and despair left by
departing and arriving travellers, but for
the most part they exude happiness – for
those of us who love to travel.
Should you be planning to sleep over,
I would recommend Gatwick, because
they have rows of seats without armrests
and it’s possible to lie out, clutching the
handle of the carry on in one hand while
using your handbag as a pillow.
Next time, more airport lay-overs and
the flight from hell.
ULTRASOUND IMAGING
IN PHYSIOTHERAPY
Ultrasound imaging has
technologically improved
over the last 20 years, in
a big way. The equipment that is
available today allows for a great
imaging exploration of several
areas of the body with minimal
costs in comparison with
an MRI for example.
So why is this
relevant in the world
of physiotherapy?
The answer
is simple, it is
an extra bit of
equipment
that can
help figure
out what
the problem
is when
combined
with our always
valuable physical
exploration. It also
allows us to rule out
other issues that may
need evaluating or treating by
a doctor, which can be crucial in a
speedy recovery.
There are three aspects of ultrasound
imaging to be applied in physiotherapy:
1. Improvement of clinical diagnosis (
which is what we mentioned above).
2. Injury management: This would mean
that we can explore the area during
each session and record how the tissue
is reacting and recovering with our
treatment.
3. Ultrasound-guided therapy: there
are several techniques that require
ultrasound guidance to allow
for a correct application. I
myself apply a treatment
called percutanous
electrolisis,this
allows soft tissue
injuries to recover
by applying
electrotherapy
through an
acupuncture
needle. I
then use the
ultrasound
image to guide
the needle to
the injured area
to then apply the
therapy. This would
be impossible to do
without live imaging of
the structure, the accuracy
of this technique is key and would
be a mistake to use it without image
guidance.
So in what areas or situations would we
use ultrasound imaging?
• Shoulder pain. It is very useful
Walsh’s Wisdom
Popeye the Sailor
Man really existed
Popeye the Sailor Man really existed
and his real name was Frank Rocky
Fiegel. Rocky was born in Poland in
1868. A retired sailor he was contracted by
Wiebusch’s tavern in the city of Chester,
Illinois, to clean the town’s lawlessness
and maintain order. Rocky Fiegel was
notorious for his belligerent attitude and
firmly believed that everything could be
sorted out with his fists.
Rocky Fiegel’s eye was deformed but
it is not certain if this was a birth defect
or consequence of a hard-won fight and
this facial feature earned the former
seaman the ‘Popeye’ sobriquet. Another
distinguishing characteristic was his pipesmoking
manner which meant that when
he was smoking his pipe he spoke through
the corner of his mouth.
Like many rough men, Rocky was at his
most comfortable when in the company of
children. However, there is no accounting
of his imaginary adventures which boasts
about the exploits of his physical strength,
ensuring he never lost a fight.
The author of Popeye, Elzie Crisler
Segar, who was born in Chester,
met his friend Frank when he was
a youngster and he loved to listen
to the old sailor’s yarns. The years
passed by and the once avid listener who
Walsh’s Wisdom
Is this Germany
or Austria or Italy
When last June the state of emergency
was relaxed in Spain my wife and
I decided to tour Europe. Covid-19
mania still gripped the 27 nations making up
the European Union but undeterred we loaded
our car and set off.
Approaching the French border was a white
knuckle ride. We were prepared for border
controls, questioning and perhaps Covid tests.
In truth, there was nothing of the kind. There
was no visible frontier save a small bland road
sign that disclosed our having arrived in France.
So far so good as we blithe spirits carried on
to Perpignan and then our first overnight stay
in Avignon in France. There, everything was
perfectly normal with not a hearse to be seen.
There was a pause for reflection as nearing
France’s border with Switzerland I spotted a
liveried Duane patrol car. Woohoo, the Customs
officers had spotted our Spanish registered car.
My fears were realised when after tailing us
for 20km the blue lights went on and we went
off – directed off the motorway into a service
area police checkpoint.
Even when you are ‘innocent of all charges’,
being pulled in and checked out by heavily
armed French cops causes unease. The outcome
was that our right to roam being clarified we
sailed on with the cops best wishes still making
a grand impression.
Our route took us into Switzerland through
which frontier we crossed unmolested; we
weren’t even stopped. But, we were pulled up
WALSH’S WISDOM
short when on making an intended overnight
hotel stop we were quoted €200 no haggling.
‘It is Switzerland,’ the receptionist smiled.
‘No, it is Germany,’ I grinned and off we
sallied and two hours of road works later we
wanderers were warmly welcomed in a small
German border town and we saved €130 for our
pleasing overnighter.
Although the German-Austrian Anschluss
(reunification) was 82-years behind us there
are no border controls between Germany
and Austria. Each time we crossed from one
country to another my wife and I asked: ‘is this
Germany or Austria?’
‘Austria,’ the bartender smiled as he pointed
down the road and the bridge crossing the River
Inn. ‘In Germany, they still wear masks.’
Ausfart! We happy pair gaily motored on
our way and discovered the most charming
of hotels just a short bus ride from Salzburg.
Unlike the great Mozart who was born in the
lovely Austrian city, we two got on fine with the
authorities.
Several days later we turned off the sound of
music and after swooping over the Brenner Pass
we arrived in Italy, again without indication
that we had crossed yet another national border.
What a pizza experience that was as we toured
and photographed ourselves in Verona and the
following day in Genoa.
It was whilst driving through Italy’s ancient
port that we did confront the full force of the
law. Exiting a fuel fill-up station I failed to see
a roadwork’s traffic light. Such is a minor sin
usually merits an understanding wave from
the driver of the temporary inconvenienced
oncoming motorist. Unless that is, the
approaching car is a police car.
Dull-witted and unrelenting, the local cops
waited whilst we visited a cash point. After
relieving us of €100 we kissed the land of
Sophia Loren, whispered arivederci and headed
for our Spanish home situated 1,120 km distant.
By the time we reached finally home we had
crisscrossed about 12 national borders and we
had not been stopped at a single crossing and
all perfectly within the law.

ANNE RODGER
TEACHING
BY
ANNE RODGER
It was a stimulating time to be a
teacher in the Sixties. The buzz word
was “Comprehensive”.
How different the world would be
if our children in school were treated
equally. It was a big challenge to be
teachers, to not introduce any element of
competition into their lessons. No longer
was there a “top of the class” - which also
meant that no-one was bottom.
I was lucky enough to get a job in one
of the first purpose-built comprehensives
in England. We had an 8 stream
entry. Theoretically, there could be no
streaming. Practically (for those in the
know) the Latin word ‘certamus’ (we
strive) was used. This meant that the top
class was C. It did not go un-noticed that
the bottom 2 streams were U.S..
As the youngest of 8 in the Science
Department (and the only female) I got
mostly the lower streams to teach.
How I dreaded Wednesday afternoon
when I had a double period of 4 M U S.
these were non-examination classes who
were simply passing away their time at
school until they could leave on their
Sixteenth birthday. Difficult.

ANNE RODGER JUNE 2021 | 39
A different situation in my next job - as
Biology mistress at a Grammar School in
Lincolnshire. The school was only 12 years
old and the Heads of Department had
all been hand-picked by the Headmaster
when the school began. There was only
one Staffroom so we all knew each other
very well.
After only 2 years there, everything
changed. All Secondary Schools in the
County had to become Comprehensive.
Education Authorities were required to
submit plans to the Government as to how
they would effect this change within 18
months.
2 terms later, our Headmaster, together
with most Department Heads, had
left. No money was made available for
new school buildings, which meant
that in order to fulfil the Government
requirements, our school had to combine
with a Secondary Modern Girls School
which was on the other side of the town
centre and over a mile away.
Practically speaking, the obvious way
to operate would be in name only, but
with the constant threat of Government
Inspectors descending on us The true
spirit of Comprehensive Education¨¨ had
to be upheld.
The Secondary School had no
laboratories which meant that all
Science lessons had to be held in our
school building. The mile walk across
town somehow had to be timetabled for
the dinner-hour where possible, but as
this also applied to Home Economics,
Gymnastics, etc. there was a constant
stream of pupils walking in both
directions - as an equivalent number had
to go from our school to have lessons
which did not require special facilities in
the other school buildings.
Chaos ensued. Teachers had to work out
their own ways of how to conduct lessons.
Did you start on time with only a handful
of pupils, or wait until most of the class
had arrived probably half was through the
lesson time.
Morale suffered.
I used to approach lessons with such
enthusiasm, particularly when I could
call in at the Abbatoir on my way in to
school in the morning, to pick up a fresh
pair of lungs which the pupils would
compete to inflate. Or take a class for
some “field study” at a local pond or
natural hedgerow. No point in planning
such lessons for only 1/2 a class in 1/2 the
lesson time.
I don’t know how these situation
eventually righted themselves, as I left
teaching at the age of 29 when I was
pregnant. I expected to be away from it for
a number of years as I was hoping to have
2 or 3 children and intended to be a full
time mum until they started school.
None of these plans turned out as I
had hoped. My roller-coaster life took
different turns and I was never to go back
to teaching.

42 | OUT AND ABOUT COSTA BLANCA A MEDIUM RARE
And so we rise up. A new generation that
needs desperately to awaken if it is to have
any effect on an ever changing burgeoning
World. Consciousness is a state of our living rights
and we have to cram so much into the workings of
our body and mind anyway, so have we got time to
take on all that is happening around us right now?
Those who do will benefit from the experience.
Our anxiety levels have reached a new hiAt the
moment there is a tremendous shift occurring in
the Spiritual World; and it is acting as an influence
and a strength, depending on whatever level of
needs the individual needs. We all need some
input and we can control so much of our lives by
our manners, our demeanour, our belief and our
faith. However, if you are not in a position to feel
that you can ask for what you need, then things
will never be balanced, and fear can set in. After a
period of grim restrictions to our lives, most of us
stepped up, and are now looking back to a warm
feeling of pride that when things got tough we
became tough and got going. Many would say that
we didn’t have much of an option. I would add
that restrictions of contact with people made things
more difficult, as it wasn’t the same not to hug, kiss
and not to have contact.
Slowly we see a cessation of the restrictions that
were supposedly engineered for our own safety,
but which made us prisoners at the very same time.
Spirit too is stepping up big time to enable us to
make those subtle changes that we all need to make
sometimes. What were dreams can soon be a reality
if we embrace what is coming next for us. There has
never been a more poignant time to connect with
Spirit and to know better that inner you that dwells
within. Indeed I never forget that we are Spirit
living in a body. Yes the body gets old and finally
dies, but the soul is our blueprint to the Spirit
World and whatever comes next in the scheme of
things, that wraps all around our perennial lives.
How do I become more spiritual? It’s the number
one question I am asked in my mailbags. It comes
daily as a message of true need from someone who
needs that support, and who needs to know more.
These days when we meet someone new, we
depart from them with their phone number, or
email, or connect on What’s App. The point of
the communicative process is that it opens doors
and so it could snowball to start a fabulous new
direction to follow. Could. If nothing happens and
no invitation, or update, or message ever comes...
another button is used..DELETE!
As with Spirit, find a quiet area of your home
and wait until light changes to darkness and start
talking. Light a few candles dedicated to your new
connection with Spirit. Tell them what you want to
say and not what you think that they want to hear
from you. Be honest. Introduce yourself, identify
yourself and ask for whatever you need right now.
Don’t beg! Be brief…..many messages are coming
in as well as yours. If you burn a little incense and
close your eyes then concentrate on breathing
deeply to achieve a point of meditation, which is
right for you.
If you have truly created a sacred space in your
home and you are feeling that your Spiritual
connection needs to strengthen, then that’s possible
too. Finding your way into a better connection with
Spirit is a great reward. It takes only a strong desire
to turn anything into magic, but believe me we are
capable of so much more. Believe in yourself and a
stronger connection can be made. Magic happens
when you let it in, but if you want to win the
Lottery you first have to buy a ticket.
48 | OUT AND ABOUT COSTA BLANCA CHANGE YOUR LIFE
Try the 3 AAAs!!!............
Nothing in life is perfect...that is what
keeps us trying to sort things out!
What will help however, is
learning how to cope when
things are not the way we
want them to be, and when they don’t
look like changing!
You may find that applying the 3As
might help!
Acknowlege.... Accept....
Adjust....
It can be simple...it just may take a little
concentration to apply it at first.
Acknowledge that the problem exists,
don’t spend your life in denial and
refusing to admit that you can see what
is wrong, and that it bothers you.

CHANGE YOUR LIFE
JUNE 2021 | 49
Accept that some situations are here to
stay, and that this may be one of those
situations.
Adjust to it and be determined to look
for ways to prove that life is still very
much worthwhile, and find the things in
life that we can feel positive about and
that we can build on.
I originally started to write this article
in Bangkok. It was my second trip, and
when you read this I will probably be
back there again, due to the incredible
kindness of a friend of mine who has
treated me to the trip this year to go and
visit her. I don’t really go to visit the
country itself...travel films, books and
photos can show me everything I need
to know about Thailand. My personal
reason for continuing to go back there
is that I have been completely knocked
sideways by the experiences I have had
with the Thai people out there. I have
decided that they, above all people,
must have learned to apply the 3As
better than any of us, to the best of my
knowledge..... it really shows!!
Their happiness shines through, not
only in the way they project themselves,
but in the way they treat others, with
a kindness and grace that I have never
witnessed anywhere else. They have
very little, and yet they are wonderfully
happy...appreciating everything they
have in their lives. They admire us
tremendously, but I feel we have lost
the plot in comparison. It could be said
that perhaps we have totally lost our
appreciation for the important things
in life and we are materially led...which
does not make for happiness. Having
things just makes you want more, and
we can so easily take things for granted.
Coming into contact with as many
people as I have done, through
counselling and other related work,
I have never come across a set of
circumstances that could not be resolved
or improved by just having the right
attitude. I cannot impress upon you
strongly enough that it is lifechanging
to realise that. There is nothing we
can do about things that have already
happened, and with the best will in the
world we cannot prevent every disaster
in our lives, but remember that the way
we deal with it is what will affect the
rest of our lives, and the lives of others
we love, and those we come into contact
with.
Take care!….Till the next time
The Danger of
Delayed Diagnosis
Due to the tremendous strain
that the Codid-19 pandemic
has put on health services
around the world, there has been a delay
in specialist appointments and in most
countries there is now a real backlog of
overdue appointments.
Whist this is very understandable
in these extreme circumstances, it
nevertheless undoubtedly will put some
patients at risk.
Most concerning are delayed
appointments for:
▪ Radiology tests (TAC, MRI and CT
Scans)
▪ Oncology (cancer specialist)
▪ Cardiology
▪ Gynaecology
Obviously this is not an exclusive list!
It stands to reason that a delay in
clinical diagnosis will mean a delay in
subsequent treatment. In some cases
this means prolonged suffering and
unfortunately a delay in treatment may
mean a poorer prognosis and shorter life
expectancy.
Leading medical journals are all in
agreement that delayed diagnosis will
without doubt lead to an increase in
cancer deaths. The British Medical
Journal estimates that ‘Cancer mortality
could rise at least 20% as a consequence
of the Covid-19 pandemic’.

DAWN BLYTHE
JUNE 2021 | 51
There are some patients who have
symptoms of illness who are either
‘frightened’ to enter a medical clinic or
feel that they don’t want to bother their
doctor at such a time. It is important
that we encourage patients to still
seek help if they have a medical
problem. All clinics will have
stringent measures in place to protect
patients and of course staff!
As there is a delay in specialist
appointments, many patients are now
opting to see specialists privately. This
may not be as expensive as you may
think (in many cases less than 100€).
Understandably this option may not
be affordable for some but in these
unusual times many patients are taking
this option. Many laughingly quote
what they saved on social expenses
throughout lockdown!!
What some patients do not realise is
that just because they have one private
appointment it doesn’t mean that they
have to ‘stay private’. Many patients
‘dip in and out’ of the private health
care system. Sometimes people choose
to have a private consultation to avoid
waiting for a social appointment, and
some because of the language barrier,
especially if their problem is of a
private nature and they do not wish to
involve an interpreter.
It is always good to be aware of your
choices!
Hi Folks
Here’s a belated Happy Birthday to Bentley
8 years old 8th April. Due to some months
of shutdown could not say Happy Birthday
so announcing it now woof woof.
How the years roll by? I
can remember him when
he was a few weeks
old arriving into the
home. He is the
smallest and he is
the “boss”, even
today.
Yes I am again
putting my paw to
paper and enjoying
every minute of it.
“Tyson’s Fan Club”
is still acceptable and my
friends have given me the “Paws
Up”. I am hoping my articles helps my
furry friends to find a “Forever Home”.
We are lucky to be so loved and spoilt. I
often giggle to myself as when I take a brief
walk into the garden and on my return, a
few minutes later, the welcome I receive
from Bentley and Alfie, as if I had been on a
two week holiday. They jump up and down
with excitement. Go to the toy box and rush
back to show me what they have selected.
Alfie has to be with me all the time so when
I have my many “naps” the snores vibrate
but it doesn’t bother him he lays with his
head on me and constantly licking my face.
With all these birthdays mine first, now
Bentley then Alfie’s later life is not yet
back to normal as us boys have great fun
enjoying our birthday treats, we all share
have
not been
affected
too much
with the shut
it was difficult
for dog walking to
shame.
I have to say I am very lucky to be writing
this article as I came in contact with a
now, we are having the garden sprayed with
CELEBRITY PROFILE
DAVID JASON
Sir David John White OBE (born 2 February
1940), known professionally by his stage name
David Jason, is an English actor, comedian,
screenwriter, television presenter and producer.
He is best known for his roles as Derek “Del Boy”
Trotter in the BBC comedy series sitcom Only
Fools and Horses, Detective Inspector Jack Frost
in A Touch of Frost, Granville in Open All Hours
and Still Open All Hours, and Pop Larkin in The
Darling Buds of May, as well as voicing Mr. Toad
in The Wind in the Willows and the title characters
of Danger Mouse and Count Duckula. His last
original appearance as Del Boy was in 2014, while
Jason retired his role as Frost in 2010.
In September 2006 Jason topped the poll to
find TV’s 50 Greatest Stars, as part of ITV’s 50th
anniversary celebrations. He was knighted
in 2005 for services to drama. Jason
has won four British Academy
Television Awards (BAFTAs),
(1988, 1991, 1997, 2003), four
British Comedy Awards (1990,
1992, 1997, 2001) and seven
National Television Awards
(1996 twice, 1997, 2001 twice,
2002 and 2011).
Jason’s father, Arthur
R White, was a porter at
Billingsgate Fish Market, and his
Welsh mother, Olwen Jones, worked
as a charwoman. She gave birth to twin
boys at North Middlesex Hospital in Edmonton,
Middlesex, in February 1940, but Jason’s twin
brother died during childbirth. In 1984, during an
interview on TV-am, David Jason admitted that
the name David Jason was taken from his like of
Jason and the Argonauts, as the stage name “David
White” was already taken.
Upon leaving school, Jason wanted to follow in
his brother’s footsteps as an actor, but their father
insisted that he first got a trade. So, for six years,
he trained as an electrician, before giving up his
girlfriend at the time, and becoming a jobbing actor.
Jason’s elder brother is the actor Arthur White,
born in 1933. The two appeared together in the
crime drama A Touch of Frost, with Arthur playing
police archivist Ernie Trigg; and again in 2008, in the
comic fantasy The Colour of Magic, where Arthur
starred as a character called “Rerpf”
He also appeared briefly with his brother in two
episodes of The Darling Buds of May.
Jason started his television career in 1964 playing
the part of Bert Bradshaw in Crossroads. In 1967, he
played spoof super-hero Captain Fantastic, among
other roles, in the children’s comedy series Do Not
Adjust Your Se. The programme ended in 1969,
and the character then appeared for a time in the
Thames Television children’s programme Magpie.
Jason was going to be cast in the role of Lance
Corporal Jones in the Jimmy Perry and David
Croft BBC comedy Dad’s Army. Croft had
been very impressed with the actor
and knew that he had the ability to
play a man much older than his
real age. However, Bill Cotton
overruled him, casting Clive
Dunn. Jason appeared in the
BBC comedy series Hugh
and I, which starred Hugh
Lloyd and Terry Scott as two
friends who lived together in
south London. He appeared in
Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased)
(“That’s How Murder Snowballs”,
1969) as Abel, a framed performer in a
major London theatre.
Jason appeared in variety shows in support of
stars such as Dick Emery and his performances
caught the attention of Ronnie Barker. Jason was
recruited to appear in Hark at Barker (LWT, 1969),
starring opposite Barker’s Lord Rustless, as Dithers,
the hundred-year old gardener. There was also a
sequel, His Lordship Entertains (1972) for the BBC.
Jason played junior employee Granville in the first
programme of the comedy anthology Seven of One
(1973), called Open All Hours (BBC) and starring
Barker as the miserly proprietor of a corner shop.
Four series of Open All Hours were made from

CELEBRITY PROFILE
1976–85. He featured in Barker’s Porridge (BBC),
a prison comedy, as the elderly Blanco in three
episodes
Jason starred in London Weekend Television’s
Lucky Feller (1975–76). About two brothers in
South-East London, the series was in many ways
a forerunner to Only Fools And Horses, only Jason
was in the more dopey ‘Rodney’ role with Peter
Armitage playing the cleverer of the two. The
brothers drove around in a comical bubble car, a
precursor to the famous Trotters’ van; and there was
even the joke where, just as he was trying to impress
the girl (Cheryl Hall), Jason casually leaned back
against the bar, without his knowing that barman
had just lifted it behind his back, and fell through.
This situation was re-enacted in Only Fools And
Horses. He played the lead role of Peter Barnes in
the ATV sitcom A Sharp Intake of Breath (1977–81).
In 1981, Jason found his most popular role, Del
Boy Trotter in the BBC situation comedy Only
Fools and Horses, created by John Sullivan. Del-
Boy is a wide-boy who makes a dubious living
in Peckham, south London, trading in shoddy,
stolen, and counterfeit goods. He is assisted by his
brother Rodney (played by Nicholas Lyndhurst)
and Grandad (played by Lennard Pearce) and,
in later episodes, Uncle Albert (played by Buster
Merryfield).
In 1989 Jason starred as Ted Simcock in the ITV
drama series A Bit of a Do, aired from January to
December.
In 1999, Jason starred as Captain Frank Beck in
BBC’s feature-length drama All the King’s Men
about the Sandringham regiment lost in World War
I. He earned acclaim for a string of straight roles.
In 1992, he signed a golden handcuffs deal at
ITV to star as Detective Inspector Jack Frost in the
long-running TV series A Touch of Frost (Yorkshire
Television/ITV). In September 2006, he was voted
by the general public as No. 1 in ITV’s poll of TV’s
Greatest Stars
Jason was made an Officer of the Order of the
British Empire (OBE), and twelve years later, in
the Queen’s Birthday Honours List of 2005, he was
knighted for services to acting and comedy. On the
day it was announced, many British newspapers
used the headline “Arise Sir Del Boy” or similar, in
reference to his most famous role. Upon receiving
the knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II at
Buckingham Palace on 1 December 2005, he said he
was “humbled” by the “fantastic tribute”.
Jason lived with his long-term girlfriend, Welsh
actress Myfanwy Talog, for eighteen years and
nursed her through breast cancer until she died
in 1995. This experience inspired him to create his
own charity, The David Jason Trust for terminally ill
children. It also mirrored the situation in A Touch
of Frost, in which the character’s wife died after a
long illness.
On 26 February 2001, Jason became a father for
the first time at the age of 61 when his girlfriend,
41-year-old Gill Hinchcliffe, gave birth to a baby
girl, born in Stoke Mandeville Hospital, Aylesbury.
Jason and Hinchcliffe married in 2005.
Jason is a patron of the Shark Trust, a United
Kingdom registered charity working to advance the
worldwide conservation of sharks through science,
education, influence and action. He has also been
Honorary Vice Patron of the Royal International Air
Tattoo since 1999, and on 29 May 2014, presented
a cheque on behalf of the Fairford-based RAF
Charitable Trust for £125,000 to the British RAF Air
Cadet Organisation, to fund flight simulators for
Air Cadets.
In October 2013, he released his autobiography
called David Jason: My Life. It was shortlisted for
the 2013 Specsavers National Book Awards “Best
Book of the Year”. A second volume, Only Fools and
Stories: From Del Boy to Granville, Pop Larkin to
Frost was published in October 2017.
In September 2017, it was reported that a
“credible threat was made to his life”, although it is
not known why Jason had been targeted.
62 | OUT AND ABOUT COSTA BLANCA HOROSCOPE
ARIES MARCH 21 - APRIL 20:
Mars enters Leo, bringing a fiery,
long overdue confrontation over
a trivial matter that will be both
revealing, entertaining and in
some ways inspiring too.
TAURUS APRIL 22 - MAY 21:
The mid month Trine between
Venus in Cancer and Neptune in
Pisces is the right time to work
around a surprise event you need to plan
carefully for.
GEMINI MAY 22 - JUNE 22:
You will be able to finally think
more clearly after the Mercury
Direct on the 22nd of the month.
This means that the absolute
truth has to be told, now.
CANCER JUNE 23 - JULY 23:
Venus enters and takes you
back to basics. Nurturing and
accepting, a new contract is
required, and only then can harmony and
peace can be restored at last.
LEO JULY 24 - AUG 23:
Right at the end of a busy month
Venus enters in to reward you
for a job done very well. Whilst
it is fun to splash out, watch
finances but do have the fun you deserve.
VIRGO AUG 24 - SEPT 23:
Awarded the maximum 5 star rating in the most recent poll by
the American Federation of Certified Psychics and Mediums.
With Saturn in Aquarius
squaring up with Uranus in
Taurus, there is bound to be
frustration over unavoidable and highly
necessary changes to schedule.
LIBRA SEPT 24 - OCT 23:
Balance your inspiration with
your intuition and you could
come up trumps this month.
If you play your cards close to
your chest then you are playing to win!
SCORPIO OCT 24 - NOV 22:
After the New Moon Solar
Eclipse in Gemini, doors open
for you. Keep a clear head and
realise that what you want finally seems
to want you too.
SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 - DEC 21:
Just after mid month Jupiter
goes into retrograde in Pisces.
You’ll get by by the very skin
of your teeth if you keep a clear
head and carry on carrying on!
CAPRICORN DEC 22 - JAN 20:
The Full Moon on the 24th
brings with it a stark warning to
finish any unfinished business
and clear the decks. Be ruthless,
because you have to be.
AQUARIUS JAN 21 - FEB 19:
Saturn in Aquarius transmutes
with a square on Uranus in
Taurus. Take time to see things
the way that you want them to
be and this will be your reality check.
PISCES FEB 20 - MAR 20:
Neptune retrogrades in Pisces.
This is a great time to look
within yourself and face up to a
reality check. There’s room for
improvement, and you can do it.
