Jellie Park
pool to
close for
six weeks
PART OF Jellie Park Recreation
and Sport Centre will close for six
weeks so essential work can be
carried out.
The 25m concrete tiled recreation
pool at the Ilam Rd, Burnside,
centre is scheduled to close from
Monday, June 14, to Monday, July
26, to allow for relining work to be
completed, improving the safety of
the pool.
City council head of recreation,
sports and events Nigel Cox said
the pool is showing significant wear
and tear, with loose and broken
tiles potentially causing significant
cuts to customers and staff.
“The work will improve the
pool functionality, aesthetics
and water tightness, through
the installation of a reinforced
1.5mm-thick PVC membrane and
perimeter tiling. The relining is
necessary due to a large number of
tiles failing, the cost of continuing
to temporarily remediate the tiles,
and to avoid injuries for staff and
customers.”
Swimsmart lessons normally
held in the recreation pool from
Monday to Friday will be offered at
their usual time, but instead take
place in the sports pool.
Burnside, Northcote primary schools
involved in new literacy initiative
A NEW approach to how
five-year-olds are taught to read
is helping raise the literacy skills
of Canterbury children, and it
has already made its way into
Burnside and Northcote primary
schools.
More than 450 teachers and
literacy specialists nationwide
are taking part in the better start
literacy approach, developed by
the Child Well-Being Research
Institute at Canterbury University.
Pene Balk-Jarvis, a teacher
with more than 30 years’ experience,
is training as a BSLA
facilitator and is supporting four
teachers at Northcote.
The programme is now being
rolled out in classes across the
country, reaching more than
4500 children in their first year
of school.
Northcote principal Justin Perriam
said the school got involved
after noticing a steady decrease
in 6-year net scores - a measure
of a student’s grasp of basic reading
and writing concepts and
skills after a year at school.
“We knew that our current
practice was not working so we
RESOURCE: Five-year-olds are being taught to read using a new approach.
started to look around for different
options,” he said.
“BSLA is giving us the
opportunity to try a different
approach to support our ākonga
with their literacy learning. It’s
not a case of throwing out our
current practice, but of enhancing
the good practice we do with a
different lens.”
Perriam is now seeing high
levels of engagement from the
pupils who are keen to share
their knowledge and clearly see
themselves as learners.
“They have found both the
whole class and smaller group
activities to be achievable and
of high interest. The lessons are
fast-paced, meaning the students
are not getting bored.”
The BSLA is based on research
evidence of the most effective
methods to teach children lettersound
knowledge, phonological
awareness, vocabulary, oral
narrative, word reading and
spelling.
The approach uses quality
children’s storybooks and fun,
game-based phoneme awareness
activities to build these critical
foundational skills.
The research trials, which have
been published internationally,
demonstrated that the approach
significantly improves children’s
early reading spelling and
vocabulary development to
a greater extent than typical
classroom practice.
It is particularly helpful for
children who enter school with
lower levels of oral language
skills and helps them catch up to
their peers.
Across the city, facilitator
Trudi Browne is supporting four
teachers at Burnside Primary
School.
She said the school got
involved as they were keen to
give tamariki the best possible
start in their learning.
“Our tamariki have embraced
the approach as much as we, as
kaiako, have. They are bringing
along their reading folders, keen
to find out what their next learning
is.”
Browne said the children are
engaged and are reading at a
higher level than before.
Macfarlane’s education theories
have also proven to be effective
for Pacific, disabled and gifted
learners.
He developed his first
education theory, the Hikairo
Rationale, now known as the
Hikairo Schema, which is a
bicultural approach to positive
behaviour, while he was head
teacher of the Awhina special
education school in the 1980s
and early 1990s.
He has contributed to national
projects, such as Resource
Teachers for Learning and
Behaviour and Hui Whakatika,
a Māori-developed restorative
justice programme in schools.
His bicultural research model
He Ara Whiria has been widely
used by Superu (the Families
Commission), Ministry of
Social Development, Ministry of
Education, Ministry of Defence
and the New Zealand Council for
Educational Research.
Macfarlane is professor of
Māori research and was founding
director of Te Rū Rangahau (The
Māori Research Laboratory) at
Canterbury University.
Professors, principal, counsellor
•Professor Paula Jameson,
Fendalton, Officer of the
New Zealand Order of
Merit
Jameson is a leading plant
scientist working at Canterbury
University. Jameson’s work has
been notable in combining
internationally recognised
research on the regulation of
plant growth with leadership
across the wider biological
sciences.
She was chairwoman of the
Royal Society of New Zealand’s
Marsden Ecology, Evolution and
Behaviour Panel, a ministerial
appointee to the Independent
Biotechnology Council, and
principal moderator for the
Tertiary Education Commission’s
PBRF 2018. In 2004, she was
appointed inaugural head of the
School of Biological Sciences at
Canterbury University.
Through her direct leadership
and mentorship, the School of
Biological Sciences became one
of New Zealand’s highest ranked
groupings of biologists. She has
been noted for her research
expertise in physiological and
molecular plant biology, her
extensive list of publications,
and her support supervising
postgraduate students.
Paula Jameson
Her key contributions
include elucidating the myriad
roles that the plant hormone
group, the cytokinins, play in
plant development. She has
undertaken major collaborations
with the applied sector in areas
of forage, seed production and
fruit development, as well as
researching the regulation of
flowering of New Zealand’s
indigenous flora.
Her achievements have
been recognised with life
fellowships from the agricultural,
John Simpson
horticultural, and plant
biology communities. Jameson
received the 2019 Marsden
Medal, recognising a lifetime
of outstanding service to the
science profession.
•Professor John Simpson,
Fendalton, Officer of the
New Zealand Order of
Merit
Simpson was head of
the School of Fine Arts at
Canterbury University for
more than 30 years, driving
a modernisation of the art
education on offer.
Simpson adopted the ideals
of Bauhaus and introduced an
‘intermediate’ year during which
students worked in all media,
specialising in fields of their
choice in subsequent years.
He introduced further
specialisations into the school,
including film, photography, and
graphic design. Art History was
established as a department of
the school, offering courses for
BA and BFA degrees and later
at doctoral levels. He was vice
IN ASSOCIATION WITH
ESSENTIAL WORK: A pool at the Jellie Park Recreation and Sport Centre will be
closed from June 14 to July 26.
Repairs needed to
improve safety at pool
•From page 1
The only exception will
be the Sharks lessons, which
will be moved to the teach
pool. Lessons normally held
in the recreation pool on
Saturdays will be transferred
to Graham Condon Recreation
and Sport Centre for the
closure period.
“We are aware that this
work disrupts people’s
routines but the safety
benefits will make the
pool much better for users,
and save money in the longterm
by avoiding the need
for reactive tile repairs,” Cox
said.
The city council has a regular
maintenance schedule for
its recreation facilities across
the city. The Pioneer Recreation
and Sport Centre pools
reopened at Queen’s Birthday
weekend after a six-month
maintenance closure.
“It is important to give
these well-used facilities the
repairs they require to keep
them running efficiently and
safely for customers and staff
to enjoy,” Cox said.
During the Jellie Park
closure the community
is encouraged to use the
recreational pools at Taiora
Condon.
AUTOMOTIVE PROFESSIONALS
Customers pleased with honest,
reliable vehicle servicing
Having your vehicle regularly serviced is
key to getting the best out of it in terms of
fuel efficiency and reduced wear and tear
on expensive parts.
Kevin, who owns and operates Parker
Automotive in Birmingham Drive,
provides full vehicle servicing to keep your
vehicle running smoothly, as well as WOFs,
batteries and tyres.
He also carries out all mechanical repairs,
including cam belt replacement, suspension
work, clutch and gearbox repairs, only
repairing what’s necessary, and without
charging the earth.
He has owned the business since 2007,
and over that time has established a loyal
customer base – people that rely on him
to give them sound advice and provide
professional care and servicing for their
vehicles.
Customers come from across the city,
Spreydon, Hillmorton, Riccarton, Halswell
and Middleton areas, and the business has
received many positive Google reviews
from customers. Below are some examples:
I have been going to Parker Automotive
for the last eight years and I cannot fault the
service. The mechanical work has been top
notch! If you want top service and value for
money I recommend Parker Automotive. –
major work like clutches, replacement
honest guy who gets the job done in a very
timely manor and he has outstanding
communication. The overall service I’ve
received is excellent. – Lachlan Poole
I know it’s not always about price but
sometimes, when it comes to vehicle repairs,
you just want a perceived good deal and work
carried out by someone who seems to care.
Kevin came recommended by a friend, and
what a great recommendation. His work was
clean, efficient, fast and came in under what
I thought it was going to cost. So we took my
partner’s car there two days later and that
too was completed faster than we expected
and at an almost unbelievable cost.
Give Parker Automotive a shot next
time you need something done. Kevin
is a nice fella too, win win. – Mark
Lewis
Earlier this year, Parker Automotive
moved from premises on the Lincoln
and Torrens roads corner to a new site
at 23B Birmingham Drive, Middleton.
Opening hours are Monday to
Friday 7.30am-4pm, Saturday 8am-
12pm. So give Kevin a call on 982
