WESTERN NEWS Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz Thursday June 10 2021 3 Burnside, Northcote primary schools involved in new literacy initiative A NEW approach to how five-year-olds are taught to read is helping raise the literacy skills of Canterbury children, and it has already made its way into Burnside and Northcote primary schools. More than 450 teachers and literacy specialists nationwide are taking part in the better start literacy approach, developed by the Child Well-Being Research Institute at Canterbury University. Pene Balk-Jarvis, a teacher with more than 30 years’ experience, is training as a BSLA facilitator and is supporting four teachers at Northcote. The programme is now being rolled out in classes across the country, reaching more than 4500 children in their first year of school. Northcote principal Justin Perriam said the school got involved after noticing a steady decrease in 6-year net scores - a measure of a student’s grasp of basic reading and writing concepts and skills after a year at school. “We knew that our current practice was not working so we RESOURCE: Five-year-olds are being taught to read using a new approach. started to look around for different options,” he said. “BSLA is giving us the opportunity to try a different approach to support our ākonga with their literacy learning. It’s not a case of throwing out our current practice, but of enhancing the good practice we do with a different lens.” Perriam is now seeing high levels of engagement from the pupils who are keen to share their knowledge and clearly see themselves as learners. “They have found both the whole class and smaller group activities to be achievable and of high interest. The lessons are fast-paced, meaning the students are not getting bored.” The BSLA is based on research evidence of the most effective methods to teach children lettersound knowledge, phonological awareness, vocabulary, oral narrative, word reading and spelling. The approach uses quality children’s storybooks and fun, game-based phoneme awareness activities to build these critical foundational skills. The research trials, which have been published internationally, demonstrated that the approach significantly improves children’s early reading spelling and vocabulary development to a greater extent than typical classroom practice. It is particularly helpful for children who enter school with lower levels of oral language skills and helps them catch up to their peers. Across the city, facilitator Trudi Browne is supporting four teachers at Burnside Primary School. She said the school got involved as they were keen to give tamariki the best possible start in their learning. “Our tamariki have embraced the approach as much as we, as kaiako, have. They are bringing along their reading folders, keen to find out what their next learning is.” Browne said the children are engaged and are reading at a higher level than before.
