HS2 Risk Registers

Keeping with the consortium's goal of
providing a simple, structure and
connected solution, it was tackled in
three phases:
Phase 1: Extract data and develop the
interface.
Phase 2: Integrate opensource cloud
system.
3D Repo SafetiBase - Excavation and TC Interface
Phase 3: Develop a dashboard platform
and automation.
HS2 is set to become a key piece of
infrastructure connecting towns
and cities across the UK for
decades to come. And with the
government's plan to achieve net zero by
2050, replacing the number of longdistance
domestic journeys made by both
aeroplane and car with high-speed rail will
go some way to reaching those goals.
Rail infrastructure, like most infrastructure
projects, is complex and challenging due
to the vast scale and duration of the
projects and the number of parties
involved. Time, cost and communications
are all pain points for any rail project team.
And health and safety is a critical aspect
interwoven through all stages of the
project, from design through to
construction, operation and maintenance.
SAFETIBASE
This was the driver for the creation of
SafetiBase. In 2018, a venture involving
BIM and digital twin specialist, 3D Repo,
and an industry-wide consortium
including Atkins, Mott McDonald, Laing
O'Rourke, Costain, Bentley, Tideway and
HS2 Ltd, was born, with funding from
the Infrastructure Industry Innovation
Partnership (i3P).
The consortium behind SafetiBase came
together because there were already best
practice examples available, they just
needed pulling together. The aim of
SafetiBase was to create an online
platform that tracks and then analyses
project risks and health and safety issues.
The construction industry needed a better
way to manage health and safety
information, something that was more
structured and better connected than just
using a risk register.
For those who don't know, a risk register
is exactly as it sounds: a register that
documents all the known risks on a
project. It's critical for any construction
project but risk registers vary between
person to person, project to project and
even within an organisation. A better,
automated solution was needed to
recognise risks earlier on in a project and
to minimise time taken to identify risks.
To ensure SafetiBase was a solution that
could be used across the construction
industry, it adheres to industry standard
PAS 1192-6. This standard encourages
the sharing of health and safety
information across the industry. It sets out
3D Repo's digital construction platform
was chosen due to it being a web-based
platform with an open API, allowing users
to view information in their native Revit
modelling system too. To enable further
analysis, users can connect Microsoft
Power BI to create custom dashboards
and thus gain better insights.
In November 2018, the SafetiBase team's
work was recognised at the Construction
Computing Awards winning the 'Health
and Safety Software Award.'
KEEPING H&S ON TRACK
At the backend of 2020, HS2 announced
its partnership with joint venture Balfour
Beatty VINCI (BBV) and 3D Repo to
harness the power of SafetiBase using
4D to invigorate its training to boost
worksite safety. Health and safety has
always been serious business for HS2,
which has its 'Safe at heart' initiative,
focusing on all aspects of health and
safety. Through the work HS2 was already
doing with 3D Repo, embracing 4D
learning technology was the next step in
making constant improvements.
The first initiative involves using
Mission Room, which provides 360°
