VTA history book updated,<br />

jubilee to take centre stage<br />

The historyofVariety Theatre<br />

<strong>Ashburton</strong>(VTA) has been updated<br />

and thespotlight is on thejubilee<br />

celebrations on July 3.<br />

VTA will celebrate 60 years with a<br />

mixandmingle event in its rehearsal<br />

rooms followed by dinneratthe<br />

<strong>Ashburton</strong>Trust Event Centre.<br />

Those attending will be able to<br />

relivethe last 10 years of shows,<br />

snippets andphotoswith an updated<br />

book compiled bythe husband and<br />

wife team of Glenn andElaine<br />

Vallender.<br />

The pair worked longand hard to<br />

produce In theSpotlight­celebrating<br />

50 years, which came out in 2009 and<br />

documents the first five decades of<br />

VTA.<br />

The historyupdate,called In the<br />

Spotlight II, was completedduring<br />

lockdownand had beenfar lesswork<br />

than its predecessor,’’ MrsVallender<br />

said.<br />

Mrs Vallender was first involved<br />

with VTA in 1976 with theshow South<br />

Pacific and has held many roles<br />

including musical director.<br />

Backthen the theatre group was<br />

called <strong>Ashburton</strong> Operatic.<br />

HusbandGlenn was firstinvolved<br />

backstage in 1989, when he lent a<br />

hand with Oliver.<br />

VTAjubilee committee chair<br />

Yvonne Harrison said there were<br />

around 60 confirmations so far for<br />

next month’s celebration.<br />

Registrations have nowbeen<br />

extended until <strong>June</strong>21, she said.<br />

Mrs HarrisonsaidVTA showshad<br />

entertainedand touched the lives of<br />

so many people.<br />

Thousands of talented people had<br />

performed on stageand average<br />

audiences had typically been 3500<br />

pershow.<br />

‘‘For every person on stagethere<br />

areatleast three peopleoff­stage<br />

involved withtechnical support,<br />

wardrobe, make­up,music, front of<br />

houseand many other roles.’’<br />

She had thoroughly her<br />

involvementand roles in wardrobe<br />

andfront of house overalmost four<br />

decades.<br />
