Cooking up community connection<br />

Food is bringingthe community<br />

together in the Hawarden /Waikari<br />

area.<br />

The Hawarden Waikari Community<br />

Care Group, whichwas only formed a<br />

monthago, has been runningcooking<br />

classes to bringpeople together.<br />

Organiser Brona Youngman says<br />

two cooking classes have been held so<br />

far, with the third and final one being<br />

held in the Waikari HallonMonday<br />

evening.<br />

‘‘We’vebeen getting 12 or 13 people<br />

each time, whichispretty good and<br />

it’s different people turning up each<br />

time.<br />

‘‘We’vehad five different<br />

nationalities coming alongsofar, so<br />

it’s quite nicetoget them out and to<br />

talk about whatwehave in common.<br />

‘‘We’veset up acommunity care<br />

groupinthe Hawarden /Waikari area<br />

and it’s about how do we get people<br />

out and about. It’s really about<br />

connection.’’<br />

The first cooking class washeld in<br />

the WaikariHall on June8where<br />

YoshimiDonnelly gave alesson on<br />

making sushi.<br />

Mrs Youngman led the second class<br />

in the Hawarden HallonJune 23,<br />

whichalesson on making sauerkraut.<br />

On Monday participants will get a<br />

lesson on making breadbyUrsula<br />

Fricker.<br />

‘‘We’rekeen to encourage more<br />

events like this so people on the<br />

ground can motivate othersand it can<br />

be fun and quite encouraging,’’ Mrs<br />

Youngman says.<br />

‘‘We’vebeen encouraged by Mayor<br />

MarieBlack and trying to encourage<br />

everyonetoget involved.<br />

Aqua park<br />

consultation<br />

Community consultationonthe<br />

proposed aqua play park in Kaiapoi<br />

is open until<strong>July</strong> 14.<br />

The Waimakariri District Council<br />

has received aproposal from the<br />

WHoW CharitableTrust to install a<br />

temporary aquaplay park within<br />

NCF Reserve in Kaiapoi.<br />

The playpark would be primarily<br />

made up of floating bouncycastles<br />

and inflatable pontoons on<br />

Courtenay Lake, with supporting<br />

features including apoint of sale<br />

container, coffeeand small food, a<br />

storage shed,picnic tables, a<br />

spectator area,lifeguardstand and<br />

toiletfacilities.<br />

Around1554 square metres of the<br />

lake would be used for the park,<br />

which would operatefor up to six<br />

monthsofthe year duringthe peak<br />

summermonths and school<br />

holidays.<br />

Duringthe off­season, the<br />

inflatables and all other temporary<br />

buildings would be removed.<br />

The trust wouldneed to meetall<br />

resource consentrequirements for<br />

the activity to go ahead.<br />

Water qualitytesting is being<br />

undertakenbyWHoW, following<br />

Environment <strong>Canterbury</strong><br />

guidelinesand the Trust is also<br />

working with ECantolook at any<br />

potential impacts the projectmay<br />

have on wildlife in the reserve.<br />

The council says this type of<br />

facility couldenhancethe<br />

community and bringalarge<br />

amountofnew visitors to the area.<br />
