Volunteers recognised<br />

National Volunteer week started early in<br />
Kaiapoi last month with 16 stallholders<br />
at the Ruataniwha Kaiapoi Library and<br />
Civic Centre, promoting and recognising<br />
the valuable work of volunteers.<br />
Held on Saturday, June 19, it was the<br />
first day of the Waimakariri District<br />
Council’s threeday Volunteer Expo held<br />
in conjunction with National Volunteer<br />
week, which ran from June 20 to 26.<br />
The Rangiora and Kaiapoi Library’s<br />
reading dog Hazel and her human<br />
volunteers took part in the Kaiapoi expo<br />
to showcase the work they do to help<br />
children learn to read.<br />
Stallholders included the Kaiapoi<br />
District Historical Society, which runs<br />
the Kaiapoi Museum, Rangiora's Cancer<br />
Society <strong>North</strong> <strong>Canterbury</strong> Centre, the<br />
Ashley Rakahuri Rivercare Group,<br />
Dementia <strong>Canterbury</strong> and <strong>North</strong><br />
<strong>Canterbury</strong> Pride.<br />
Council safe community project<br />
organiser Wendy Howe said volunteering<br />
in the community was good for<br />
volunteers and those they helped.<br />
It also provided volunteers with the<br />
opportunity to gain new skills, share<br />
knowledge and experience, make new<br />
friends, improve the lives of others and<br />
in some cases, improve the environment.<br />
Twentyfive stallholders took part in<br />
the threeday Waimakariri Volunteer<br />
Expo.<br />

Amberley’s NEST ArtsCollective is<br />
celebrating its first anniversary with an<br />
exhibition of member’s work.<br />
The Showcase Art Exhibition will<br />
open this Saturday (<strong>July</strong>3)and end on<br />
Saturday, <strong>July</strong> 17.<br />
The exhibitionwill be held at the<br />
NEST headquartersat88Carters Road<br />
in Amberley andwill be open to the<br />
publicdaily from 10am to 4pm.<br />
The collective hosted its first art<br />
exhibition and workshopevent at 16<br />
Markham Street in Amberley in <strong>July</strong><br />
last year, shortly afterthe nationwide<br />
Covid19 pandemic lockdown.<br />
The event was ahuge successand<br />
introduced the collective’s concept,<br />
ambitions and artists to the wider<br />
community.<br />
The collectivehas now establisheda<br />
permanent homeatCarters Road.<br />
Since moving into this spacein<br />
October, and officially openingits<br />
doors in January, the team has<br />
developed acreative education space<br />
and held avariety of workshops and<br />
classes.<br />
Agallery and retail spacefor selling<br />
avarietyofwork by <strong>North</strong> <strong>Canterbury</strong><br />
artists andcraftershas also been<br />
established plus aresident artists'<br />
studio.<br />
Creative community projects,<br />
including alarge wall muralin<br />
Rangiora’s Blake Street car park and<br />
contributionstothe Pop Up Penguins<br />
ArtTrail have also beencompleted by<br />
the collective’sartists.<br />

ALioness Club has been reborn in<br />
Rangiora.<br />
The Lions Club of Rangiora<br />
Lionesses held its inaugural charter<br />
meeting recently and is now looking for<br />
new members to join the other 12<br />
members of the group.<br />
The club is keentocarry on the work<br />
of the originalclub, which was formed<br />
in Rangiora in 1986.<br />
The original club, which was a<br />
branchofthe Lions International<br />
organisation, raised funds through<br />
book fairs, fashion parades,selling<br />
cheese rolls and running quiz evenings,<br />
enabling it to support many local<br />
charities, including the Rangiora<br />
Cancer Supportgroup and St John.<br />
The new club is looking at similar<br />
fundraising ventures and is keenfor<br />
anyone interested in joining, to join the<br />
local clubfor fun, friendship and the<br />
opportunity to help support their<br />
community.<br />
The club meets in the Rangiora RSA<br />
on the first and third Monday of the<br />
