Highland Celts Band
Mad Stringers
Highland Celts Band is Highlands County’s only band solely dedicated to
traditional Celtic music originating in Ireland and Scotland. Charter member
Chris Noel plays the Irish tin, or penny whistle, and flute. Matt Coltharp is featured
playing fiddle and guitar. Bill Williams adds depth and flare on guitar. Michael
Noel backs them up with the Irish drum, the bodhran. All of them have a turn
at singing a variety of tunes including ballads, sea shanties and pub songs. They
encourage crowd participation and often provide chorus lyrics for sing-alongs.
As a special treat, the Irish step dance class from Attitudes Dance Studio will join
them dancing to popular jigs and reels. Class instructor Alyxandra Maxwell might
bring some special dancers from south Florida to join in the show.
The Highland Celts will be performing on Friday, July 23 from 3-5 p.m. in The Yard at the Journal
Plaza and Saturday, July 24 at 12:15 p.m. at the festival pavilion.
The Mad
Stringers are a
local favorite
three-piece band
that came out
of Wauchula,
Florida. Alexis
Garay is the
singer and
guitarist, Chris
Garay (her father)
is the bassist and
Jason Harabarugh
is on drums. They
all combine a
lifelong passion
for music that
crosses genres.
At any given
show, tunes from
folk to rock to
instrumentals
are jamming.
Inspired from
her time living
on a sailboat in
the Keys, Alexis
brings a serene,
soulful sound
to her melodies,
while Chris and
Jason provide the
rhythm. Going
on close to three
years strong
making their way
across counties
captivating hearts
and ears.
