Round two of<br />
fund to support<br />
tourist events<br />
People organising Mid Canterbury events attracting<br />
visitors fromoutside the districtare being encouraged<br />
to applyfor up to $10,000 fromaregional event fundset<br />
up by the Ministry of Business, Innovationand<br />
Employment.<br />
MidCanterbury has $230,000 to spendoverfouryears<br />
to helpthe district attract domestic tourists. Nine<br />
eventswere allocated about $50,000 in the firstround<br />
earlier this year and now the second round is openfor<br />
applications, with $36,000 to distribute.<br />
TheSouth Island Secondary Schoolsmountain bike<br />
championships werehosted at the Mt Hutt bikepark<br />
this year by Bike Methven and organisers were<br />
allocated $3,764 fromthe regional fund to help run the<br />
event.<br />
Thechamps attractedseveral hundred riders, and<br />
theirsupport crews, whostayed in the district for<br />
several days.<br />
Theorganisers of athreedaynationalpickleball<br />
tournament heldinthe EA Networks Centre earlier this<br />
month werealso among those ninefirstround events<br />
andwere allocated $5,000 for their sportingevent.<br />
<strong>Ashburton</strong>District Mayor NeilBrownsaid anyone<br />
with agreat event ideaand aplan to makeithappen<br />
should applyfor funding,especially if it wouldattract<br />
visitors to the districtfor an overnight stay.<br />
‘‘Thisisanopportunity forour community to put our<br />
district on the mapwith events thatwill be areal<br />
drawcard for visitors and drive spending in our local<br />
economy.’’<br />
To be eligible forfunding,events need to havea<br />
duration of between two andfouryears andmust<br />
demonstrate how theywill attract outofregionvisitors.<br />
Applications for the secondround of the regional<br />
event fundopen on September 1and closeon<br />
September20.<br />
Eventorganisers can applyfor up to $10,000per event<br />
to be heldbetween 1February and 30 June2022.<br />

Bantam wins<br />
for George<br />
<strong>Ashburton</strong> man George Whyte has<br />
taken out top prizes at multiple<br />
events with his young bird Molly<br />
in his first season of showing<br />
bantams.<br />
Molly impressed judges at the<br />
<strong>Ashburton</strong> Fanciers Society<br />
annual show in June, and won the<br />
best mottle pekin female award.<br />
At the South Island Poultry<br />
Pigeon and Caged Bird<br />
Association Championships in<br />
Christchurch the same month, the<br />
bird was awinner again.<br />
The trifecta of wins continued<br />
with success again at ashow in<br />
Oamaru earlier this month.<br />
The novice showman has<br />
trophies and certificates to<br />
remember his memorable first<br />
year of bantam showing.<br />
George bought Molly and three<br />
other birds from Mosgiel breeder<br />
Kaye Sangster earlier this year.<br />
He plans to allow her to breed<br />
soon and is hoping her shape and<br />
markings will be passed on to her<br />
offspring<br />
George said he had enjoyed his<br />
first season on the show circuit.<br />
