‘’Evie,’’ she says, still looking at him in slight shock.
He takes his phone from his pocket.
‘’Five past, I think they stood me up,’’ he sighs. ‘’I got a bunch of weird texts yesterday,
was told to be here for 12pm.’’
Evie takes out her own phone and shows the screen to Liam.
‘’Anything like this?’’
He looks puzzled.
‘’I’ve- I’ve got the same messages,’’ he shows her his screen, the messages identical
apart from the use of ‘’Mr Blanchet’’
‘’What the hell?’’ Evie starts to pace. Liam sits down on one of the benches.
After muttering to herself in disbelief for a few minutes, Evie sits down next to him.
She reads a couple missed texts from her friends, but barely processes what they say.
When it gets to half, she gets up.
‘’I should probably get going.’’ she half smiles at Liam, again stating how creepy it was
that they received the same messages and that the sender didn’t show up.
Liam gets up, too.
They part, knowing they’ll probably never see each other again. Maybe sometime in
the middle of the night, Evie will think about the time she met a young man with the same
last name as her behind the Louvre Museum. Maybe she won’t.
But the future is always unpredictable.
2003, SOMEWHERE ABOVE THE ALTANTIC OCEAN
Evie’s flight is normal, just like the one she took to France. The two girls sitting next to
her talk in hushed tones, because they dot want to be heard, or because they don’t want to
disturb her. Though Evie thinks it naïve of herself, she likes to think the latter is true.
