And now here she is on her way to New York, spending what little time and money she
has to meet someone who is almost a stranger.
A perfect trip for the summer.
She tries calling Liam back, the first few times leading to his voicemail, the times after
telling her his number isn’t in service.
She texts him, looks for his social media, but Liam Blanchet is a popular name. thousands
of results.
The only thing she can do is wait.
2003, NEW YORK CITY
Liam waits for her at the station. He looks as if he hasn’t slept since she saw him last.
Without saying anything, he leads her back to an apartment block not unlike her own. She
asks what happened, why she has to be in New York, but he doesn’t reply. He just opens the
apartment door for her as a way of explanation.
Evie just stares at the place in shock.
Everything is in ruins. The couch is torn, the fridge hanging open, spilled water on the
rug, dirt, ripped wallpaper, objects turned over, drawers looted.
On the kitchen island sits Liam’s phone, the screen shattered beyond repair. There are
two barely readable texts on the screen.
Games are played to win, Mr Blanchet
And underneath:
We thought Theodore had taught you better
The moment Evie reads the messages, her own phone buzzes.
Ready for round two, Miss Blanchet?
